Human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Femi Falana, has accused the Federal Government of undermining its credibility in prosecuting cases of unruly behaviour at the nation’s airports.

Falana faulted the government’s decision to accept the apology of Fuji musician Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, popularly known as KWAM 1, over his recent conduct at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, without allowing police investigations to run their course.

The senior lawyer alleged that KWAM 1, who is being investigated for allegedly pouring the contents of a flask on a pilot, a security officer, and passengers, was hastily pardoned and is now being considered for appointment as an ambassador for airport security protocol.

He argued that such preferential treatment prompted the withdrawal of charges against Comfort Emmanson, an Ibom Air passenger earlier accused of unruly behaviour, thereby setting a precedent that could erode equal application of the law.

The petition alleges that on August 5, 2025, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, Mr. Marshal engaged in unruly conduct that obstructed the safe operation of an aircraft, contravening the Nigerian Civil Aviation Regulations, 2023.

In response, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, has directed the Commissioner of Police, Airport Command, to immediately commence a thorough investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure appropriate action is taken.

Former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, has said former President Goodluck Jonathan remains the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) best hope for reclaiming power in the 2027 presidential election, urging the party to make deliberate efforts to bring him back into its fold.

Speaking on Friday, Lamido said Jonathan’s leadership experience, governance record, and collaborative approach make him unmatched within the party’s southern ranks.

Protesters on Friday stormed the Force Headquarters in Abuja, demanding the immediate release of human rights activist and publisher, Omoyele Sowore, from police custody.

Dressed in black and waving the Nigerian flag, the demonstrators sang anti-government songs and accused the police of intimidation. They denied reports that they barricaded any roads during the protest.

“We are exercising our fundamental constitutional rights,” one protester told journalists. “We did not block any road. An Assistant Commissioner of Police came here with a dog to intimidate us. We are here within the ambit of the law — let it be on record.”

Sowore, accompanied by supporters, had gone to the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday to honour a police invitation. The Nigeria Police Force, through the Inspector General of Police Monitoring Unit, is investigating him over alleged forgery and inciting disturbance.

However, he was detained on Thursday and has yet to regain his freedom. Reports also allege that officers broke his hand while attempting to forcibly move him from custody to court early Thursday morning.

Amnesty International condemned the development, describing it as a violation of human rights and due process.

This is totally unacceptable behaviour and amounts to a hostage situation.”

“I have seen the President ask APC governors to ‘wet the ground’ more, but as far as the masses of our people are concerned, things are getting tougher by the day,” Falana said. “Because of the religious implementation of neoliberal policies by the government, poverty is on the ascendancy. That will require a review of these policies.”

He condemned the administration’s aggressive privatisation drive, warning that it runs counter to efforts to reduce income inequality. “You cannot be addressing income inequality in a country while handing over the nation’s resources to a few people in the name of privatisation,” he said. “Most Nigerians cannot afford three square meals a day. The middle class has been wiped out by the neoliberal policies of the government.”

Falana urged the federal government to urgently reconsider the economic policies being promoted by international financial institutions like the IMF and World Bank and prioritize the needs of ordinary Nigerians, particularly vulnerable populations in rural areas.

“The government must go back to the drawing board and review each of these policies in the interest of Nigerians. It is in the interest of the government to review its policies as soon as possible,” he stated.

He further emphasized the urgent need for the full implementation and legal backing of social welfare programmes such as the National Social Investment Programme (NSIP), which was formalised under the Social Investment Programme Agency Act in 2023.

The National Youth Leader of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Balarabe Rufai, has declared that the 2027 general elections will be a battle between Nigerians guided by conscience and those driven by personal or political gain.

Speaking on Saturday at the ADC National Secretariat in Abuja, Rufai made the remarks while receiving a delegation from the Coalition for Nigerian Youths in Politics (CONYIP). He stressed that Nigerian youths are the backbone of the party and expressed confidence that with their support, President Bola Tinubu would be unseated in the next election.

“This is no longer about tribes or geopolitical zones,” Rufai stated. “It is now between those who have a conscience and those who do not. And that is what the 2027 election will be about.”

The Court of Appeal sitting in Akure has upheld the election of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa as the duly elected Governor of Ondo State, reaffirming his victory in the November 16, 2024 gubernatorial election.

Aiyedatiwa, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), was declared winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) after polling 366,781 votes and securing victory across all 18 local government areas of the state. His closest rival, Agboola Ajayi of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), trailed behind.

The appellate court’s verdict follows a series of earlier legal wins for Aiyedatiwa.

On June 4, 2025, the Ondo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal dismissed multiple petitions challenging the legitimacy of the election, including one filed by Ajayi alleging widespread irregularities.

The tribunal, led by Justice Benson Ogubu, also struck out similar challenges from candidates of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), African Democratic Congress (ADC), Allied Peoples’ Movement (APM), and African Alliance (AA) — all affirming Aiyedatiwa’s electoral mandate.

The Special Adviser to the President on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, has stated that President Bola Tinubu’s administration has made significant progress in fulfilling its core mandate of providing security and improving national welfare.

Speaking during a media engagement, Bwala said:

“The number one promise of any government is the security of lives and the welfare of the people. If you look at the progress made, especially in terms of national security, the results speak for themselves.”

Citing improvements in security conditions across previously volatile regions, Bwala noted:

“Look at the situation in Benue and Plateau States—it has calmed down significantly. The IPOB crisis and incidents involving unknown gunmen have also reduced, compared to the widespread violence and kidnappings in 2022 and 2023.”

According to Bwala, while isolated criminal incidents persist, they are not unique to Nigeria and should not be directly linked to governance failure.

“What we’re witnessing now are criminal tendencies that exist globally and are not necessarily indicative of poor leadership,” he added.

On economic recovery, Bwala asserted that Nigeria is on the right trajectory.

Former Jigawa federal lawmaker, Muhammad Gudaji Kazaure, has said that President Bola Tinubu will lose the 2027 presidential election before 12 p.m. on election day.

Kazaure made the remarks at a public event where he strongly criticized the current administration over poor governance and the state of the nation.

He accused President Tinubu of mismanaging the country and confidently predicted that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) would be defeated before noon on election day.
