Human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Femi Falana, has accused the Federal Government of undermining its credibility in prosecuting cases of unruly behaviour at the nation’s airports. Falana faulted the government’s decision to accept the apology of Fuji musician Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, popularly known as KWAM 1, over his recent conduct at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, without allowing police investigations to run their course. The senior lawyer alleged that KWAM 1, who is being investigated for allegedly pouring the contents of a flask on a pilot, a security officer, and passengers, was hastily pardoned and is now being considered for appointment as an ambassador for airport security protocol. He argued that such preferential treatment prompted the withdrawal of charges against Comfort Emmanson, an Ibom Air passenger earlier accused of unruly behaviour, thereby setting a precedent that could erode equal application of the law. https://voicenews.com.ng/fg-has-lost-moral-right-to-prosecute-unruly-air-passengers-falana/

The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed receipt of a petition from the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) over an alleged incident involving renowned musician Mr. Wasiu Ayinde Marshal (popularly known as KWAM 1). The petition alleges that on August 5, 2025, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, Mr. Marshal engaged in unruly conduct that obstructed the safe operation of an aircraft, contravening the Nigerian Civil Aviation Regulations, 2023. In response, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, has directed the Commissioner of Police, Airport Command, to immediately commence a thorough investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure appropriate action is taken. https://voicenews.com.ng/kwam-1-igp-receives-ncaa-petition-orders-probe/

Former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, has said former President Goodluck Jonathan remains the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) best hope for reclaiming power in the 2027 presidential election, urging the party to make deliberate efforts to bring him back into its fold. Speaking on Friday, Lamido said Jonathan’s leadership experience, governance record, and collaborative approach make him unmatched within the party’s southern ranks. “I think for PDP now, they should try and woo him; he is their best bet. Anybody put forth by the PDP, Nigerians will support him,” Lamido said. He added, “If we are giving the presidency to the South, who is there in the PDP now that can challenge Jonathan in terms of being in office, being full-headed, being willing to listen, and being a key player who believes in partnership?” Lamido’s comments come amid persistent speculation over Jonathan’s possible return to the PDP to seek the presidency in 2027. Although the party has publicly denied offering him its ticket or actively wooing him, political insiders say behind-the-scenes moves are underway to position the former president as a strong challenger to President Bola Tinubu. https://voicenews.com.ng/jonathan-is-pdps-strongest-2027-option-sule-lamido/

Protesters on Friday stormed the Force Headquarters in Abuja, demanding the immediate release of human rights activist and publisher, Omoyele Sowore, from police custody. Dressed in black and waving the Nigerian flag, the demonstrators sang anti-government songs and accused the police of intimidation. They denied reports that they barricaded any roads during the protest. “We are exercising our fundamental constitutional rights,” one protester told journalists. “We did not block any road. An Assistant Commissioner of Police came here with a dog to intimidate us. We are here within the ambit of the law — let it be on record.” Sowore, accompanied by supporters, had gone to the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday to honour a police invitation. The Nigeria Police Force, through the Inspector General of Police Monitoring Unit, is investigating him over alleged forgery and inciting disturbance. However, he was detained on Thursday and has yet to regain his freedom. Reports also allege that officers broke his hand while attempting to forcibly move him from custody to court early Thursday morning. Amnesty International condemned the development, describing it as a violation of human rights and due process. https://voicenews.com.ng/protesters-storm-force-headquarters-demand-sowores-release/

Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has directed the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to place renowned Fuji musician, Wasiu Ayinde, popularly known as K1 De Ultimate, on a no-fly list following a serious safety breach at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja. Announcing the decision via his official X handle (@fkeyamo) on Thursday, the minister also instructed the NCAA to immediately notify both domestic and international airlines of the directive. Keyamo warned that any operator that disregards the order risks withdrawal of their operating licence. VoiceNews reports that the directive stems from an altercation on Tuesday, August 7, involving Ayinde and two ValueJet pilots, Captain Oluranti Ogoyi and First Officer Ivan Oloba, which led to the suspension of the pilots’ licences. Keyamo condemned the conduct of both the artist and the flight crew, stating that his preliminary assessment of the incident suggests a “temporary loss of sanity and control” by all parties involved—one that could have resulted in a major aviation tragedy. “I have received reports from all the relevant aviation agencies regarding the altercation between the staff and crew of ValueJet and K1 at Abuja airport,” Keyamo said. “Contrary to claims by his aides, KWAM 1 repeatedly changed his position on the tarmac to physically block the aircraft from taxiing toward the runway. This is totally unacceptable behaviour and amounts to a hostage situation.” The minister added that while there was speculation about whether the artist was carrying water or alcohol, “the issue at hand is the physical obstruction of a commercial aircraft, which is a grave violation of aviation safety protocols.” He further criticized the pilots’ response to the situation, noting that no aircraft should begin taxiing while an unruly individual remains in its path and without clearance from airport security. https://voicenews.com.ng/keyamo-orders-no-fly-listing-of-fuji-star-k1-over-airport-incident/

Nigeria’s former President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, is poised to contest the 2027 presidential election, a close political ally within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has confirmed. This development, if finalised, could significantly reshape the political landscape ahead of the next general election. The PDP stalwart, who spoke on condition of anonymity, revealed that advanced consultations are ongoing to position the Bayelsa-born former leader as the party’s presidential flagbearer. The move, he said, is being championed by key political elders and stakeholders across Nigeria who view Jonathan’s return as a necessary step to address Nigeria’s worsening economic and social conditions. “Dr. Jonathan has accepted in principle,” the source said. “He is concerned about the level of poverty, insecurity, and hopelessness across the country, and believes he still has something to offer. This campaign is being driven by national leaders who believe in his ability to stabilise the country and restore economic sanity.” According to the source, Jonathan has held private meetings with influential figures in the north, including former military president General Ibrahim Babangida, whom he reportedly met in Minna last weekend. He has also begun consultations in the South-South region, seeking the support of political allies and stakeholders. PDP Moves to Draft Jonathan Within the PDP, moves to draft Jonathan are intensifying. Top party officials, including governors and members of the National Working Committee, have reportedly reached out to him both locally and abroad, including a recent visit to The Gambia, where Jonathan has been active in international mediation roles. Speaking to journalists, PDP Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Ibrahim Abdullahi, confirmed the party's interest in the former president, citing a groundswell of public sentiment in his favour. “Many Nigerians have come to realise the mistake they made in 2015,” Abdullahi said. “There is now a strong call for Jonathan’s return, and as a listening party, the PDP is acting on that mandate.” https://voicenews.com.ng/2027-jonathan-set-to-run-again-close-ally-confirms/

Opposition leader and former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has lambasted President Bola Tinubu's administration over its decision to allocate a staggering ₦712.3 billion for the renovation of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, calling it a gross misplacement of priorities amid widespread hunger and hardship across the country. Mr. Obi, who is seeking to unseat President Tinubu in the 2027 general elections, issued a strongly worded statement on Wednesday, denouncing the expenditure as "profoundly troubling" and tone-deaf to the current suffering of ordinary Nigerians. “It is profoundly troubling that at a time when millions of Nigerians are facing the crushing burden of hunger, the Federal Government has chosen to approve a staggering ₦712.3 billion—not to feed its people, not to lift them out of hardship, and not to invest in their well-being, but to renovate an airport,” Obi stated. “This raises a fundamental and urgent question: Where are our national priorities?” The criticism comes days after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) approved the airport renovation plan as part of broader efforts to modernise aviation infrastructure and enhance passenger experience. Obi referenced a July 2025 United Nations report which warned that 34 million Nigerians were at risk of hunger by August — a figure he described not as mere statistics but as “real people — our parents, children, neighbours, and friends – who are going to bed hungry and waking up without hope of a meal.” He also recalled Nigeria’s earlier investment in airport infrastructure, pointing out that in 2013, the country secured a $500 million loan from the China Exim Bank, supported by counterpart funding, to upgrade five international airports in Lagos, Abuja, Kano, Port Harcourt, and Enugu. “If that massive investment was made barely a decade ago, what justifies an even larger sum today for just one airport—especially at a time when Nigerians are starving, internally displaced, and desperate?” Obi queried. The 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate accused the Tinubu administration of prioritising "grandiose infrastructure projects" over critical human development indicators like food security, healthcare, education, and internal security. https://voicenews.com.ng/peter-obi-slams-tinubu-over-%e2%82%a6712bn-lagos-airport-renovation-amid-worsening-hunger-crisis/

Human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, has strongly criticised President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms, describing them as “harsh neoliberal policies” that have devastated Nigeria’s middle class and worsened the living conditions of millions. Speaking on the worsening economic situation, Falana noted that even though the President recently acknowledged the hardship faced by citizens, his policies have only served to intensify poverty across the country. “I have seen the President ask APC governors to ‘wet the ground’ more, but as far as the masses of our people are concerned, things are getting tougher by the day,” Falana said. “Because of the religious implementation of neoliberal policies by the government, poverty is on the ascendancy. That will require a review of these policies.” He condemned the administration’s aggressive privatisation drive, warning that it runs counter to efforts to reduce income inequality. “You cannot be addressing income inequality in a country while handing over the nation’s resources to a few people in the name of privatisation,” he said. “Most Nigerians cannot afford three square meals a day. The middle class has been wiped out by the neoliberal policies of the government.” Falana urged the federal government to urgently reconsider the economic policies being promoted by international financial institutions like the IMF and World Bank and prioritize the needs of ordinary Nigerians, particularly vulnerable populations in rural areas. “The government must go back to the drawing board and review each of these policies in the interest of Nigerians. It is in the interest of the government to review its policies as soon as possible,” he stated. He further emphasized the urgent need for the full implementation and legal backing of social welfare programmes such as the National Social Investment Programme (NSIP), which was formalised under the Social Investment Programme Agency Act in 2023. https://voicenews.com.ng/tinubus-harsh-economic-reforms-have-erased-nigerias-middle-class-deepened-poverty-falana/

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has issued a fiery rebuke to former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, accusing him of hypocrisy and failed leadership following his sharp criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s administration. In a statement signed by APC National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka, the party described El-Rufai as a “clownish figure” and “political has-been,” alleging that his outbursts stem from his failed ministerial bid and frustrated presidential ambitions. El-Rufai had, during a meeting in Sokoto, branded the Tinubu government as “incompetent and clannish,” warning it does not deserve a second term. The APC hit back, accusing him of presiding over a deeply divisive and debt-ridden Kaduna State administration, and slammed his alliance with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as “rudderless.” The party also warned of an alleged plan by El-Rufai and ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar to hijack the ADC for Atiku’s 2027 bid, calling it a threat to national unity. https://voicenews.com.ng/apc-slams-el-rufai-over-criticism-of-tinubu-labels-him-poster-child-of-failed-leadership/

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MFn2_F2I5U4 Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo (SAN), has ridiculed the rising confidence of the opposition coalition to unseat the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing their political manoeuvres as outdated ‘419 formats’ that no longer fool Nigerians. Speaking during a televised interview, Keyamo said Nigerians have become more politically discerning and are aware of the opposition’s gimmicks, which he claimed are nothing more than recycled strategies dressed up for public appeal. “I know them very well, and they know us very well. These tactics they are employing are expired. They are 419 formats that have been used over the years. I was an EFCC prosecutor. I know those formats. Nigerians know them too. You cannot deceive Nigerians with these expired formats again,” he said. ''The format the ADC coalition is using is expired. Nigerians know them and won't fall for that...Peter Obi can't penetrate the North because we have all our structures.'' -Festus Keyamo

The National Youth Leader of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Balarabe Rufai, has declared that the 2027 general elections will be a battle between Nigerians guided by conscience and those driven by personal or political gain. Speaking on Saturday at the ADC National Secretariat in Abuja, Rufai made the remarks while receiving a delegation from the Coalition for Nigerian Youths in Politics (CONYIP). He stressed that Nigerian youths are the backbone of the party and expressed confidence that with their support, President Bola Tinubu would be unseated in the next election. “This is no longer about tribes or geopolitical zones,” Rufai stated. “It is now between those who have a conscience and those who do not. And that is what the 2027 election will be about.” He revealed that several leaders within the ADC coalition had resisted attempts by the current administration to co-opt them through offers of contracts and political appointments. “Some of our leaders have been approached by the current administration with offers of contracts and appointments, but they rejected them. They said ‘Enough is enough.’ That’s why we trust them,” Rufai said. “But even with that trust, let me be clear—we will not idolise them. Democracy is about participation and accountability. We will correct them. We will speak up if they go astray.” https://voicenews.com.ng/2027-elections-will-be-between-nigerians-of-conscience-and-the-rest-adc-youth-leader/

The Federal Government has declared that the establishment of Agribusiness Industrial Hubs across the country will drastically reduce post-harvest losses currently plaguing Nigerian farmers. Vice President Kashim Shettima made this known on Saturday during the groundbreaking ceremony of the Agribusiness Industrial Hub in Atan-Ijaiye, located in Akinyele Local Government Area of Oyo State. Shettima, who was represented by the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to revitalizing the agricultural sector through strategic investments and partnerships. According to Shettima, “This project is a testament to our unwavering commitment to a future where hope is renewed through concrete action, strategic partnerships, and inclusive growth. It is a bold declaration that Nigeria’s future lies in transforming our abundant agricultural resources into value-added products that fuel industries, generate employment, and uplift our farmers.” He further noted that the initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and is driven by a strategic partnership between the Federal Government, State Governments, and international development partners, including the African Development Bank (AfDB), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), and the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB). “This collaborative effort underscores our shared belief that sustainable development in agriculture is achievable only through unity, innovation, and shared responsibility,” he said. https://voicenews.com.ng/establishing-agribusiness-industrial-hubs-across-nigeria-will-curb-post-harvest-losses/

The Court of Appeal sitting in Akure has upheld the election of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa as the duly elected Governor of Ondo State, reaffirming his victory in the November 16, 2024 gubernatorial election. Aiyedatiwa, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), was declared winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) after polling 366,781 votes and securing victory across all 18 local government areas of the state. His closest rival, Agboola Ajayi of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), trailed behind. The appellate court’s verdict follows a series of earlier legal wins for Aiyedatiwa. On June 4, 2025, the Ondo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal dismissed multiple petitions challenging the legitimacy of the election, including one filed by Ajayi alleging widespread irregularities. The tribunal, led by Justice Benson Ogubu, also struck out similar challenges from candidates of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), African Democratic Congress (ADC), Allied Peoples’ Movement (APM), and African Alliance (AA) — all affirming Aiyedatiwa’s electoral mandate. https://voicenews.com.ng/appeal-court-upholds-aiyedatiwas-victory-in-ondo-governorship-election/

The Special Adviser to the President on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, has stated that President Bola Tinubu’s administration has made significant progress in fulfilling its core mandate of providing security and improving national welfare. Speaking during a media engagement, Bwala said: “The number one promise of any government is the security of lives and the welfare of the people. If you look at the progress made, especially in terms of national security, the results speak for themselves.” Citing improvements in security conditions across previously volatile regions, Bwala noted: “Look at the situation in Benue and Plateau States—it has calmed down significantly. The IPOB crisis and incidents involving unknown gunmen have also reduced, compared to the widespread violence and kidnappings in 2022 and 2023.” According to Bwala, while isolated criminal incidents persist, they are not unique to Nigeria and should not be directly linked to governance failure. “What we’re witnessing now are criminal tendencies that exist globally and are not necessarily indicative of poor leadership,” he added. On economic recovery, Bwala asserted that Nigeria is on the right trajectory. https://voicenews.com.ng/tinubu-has-delivered-on-security-economy-on-path-to-recovery-presidential-aide-bwala/
