The idiot is not Okun. He is trying to plant a seed of discord among the Okun Yoruba and their brothers in the Southwest That's why i ignored him.
He and the OP are typical examples of "da bi mo se da". They are trying to spread the confusion and disunity in their climes to other ethnic nationality. It is their type you will see shouting. "Fulani has enslaved Hausa!", "Fulani has hijacked Hausaland", "The Ilorin hates Yoruba" Ilorin belongs to the Fulani" "Yoruba Muslims hate Yoruba Christians!", "Yoruba Christians will not allow Yoruba Muslims to sell them" and all those kind of rubbish divisive comments and phrases. The best way to knock their empty cranium is to ignore them.

No Okun person, dead or alive will disclaim being Yoruba.

The general Yoruba language is a modification of the dialect of Oyo which because of the legacy of the Oyo Empire was the most widely spoken when the Yoruba orthography were formulated.

It however should be noted that Oyo Empire included non-Yoruba peoples and had close interactions with highest number of other peoples like Nupe, Hausa, Songhai, Malians, Fulani, Ewe and Fon.
In the process , their languages was influenced by all these peoples e.g The now accepted Yoruba name for

The guy has serious inferiority complex. He doesn't speak for majority of Kogi west people who Yorubas.

I was born in the north and being from Ondo state (though mother from Ilorin) but since I stay and more used to my Ikare side, I tends to speak Ikare dialect more.

You may not know though if I switched to the general Yoruba because I grew up among people from Oyo and Osun state but these groups still find a way to ridicule my Ikare dialect when Is speak it to family men.
I'm not really ashamed to speak the Ikare dialect and I make it a point to explain to them that Ondo,Ekiti,Ijebu and Okun dialects are closer to proto Yoruba language than Oyo dialect that has shown my innovation due to their closeness with Nupes, Borugu etc.

I understand u bro but let's give him the benefit of doubt. He may be genuinely hurt about those experiences hence his decision.

I am Ijebu and I have had my fair share of discrimination too. It's even much worste for the Ijebus with all the stereotypes coined for them by other Yoruba subgroups yet we embrace our Yorubanness like kilode.

His decision may be too harsh and irrational but we should make him realize it by good logic and explanation.

I wanted to fire him before too but i noticed the tone of his comments does not give him away as those impostors hence my diplomatic approach towards him.

Btw, I hear you Ondos do not like us, why? grin
Sorry jare.
@bolded Ondo and Ijebu have wars in the past.

Any Okun person that claims Yoruba has not met with a Yoruba person from South West before.
Maybe such Okun person lives in the north or lives in Okun region or lives where yoruba people are not present.
Yoruba people will be the first to tell you you aren't part of them. But call you agatu, tapa, Ebira or abokiii. It is due to ignorance because majority of Yoruba people don't travel. And they are very tribalistic. Even their fellow people IN South West, they show tribalism, how much more you that is outside their region.
Nonsense.
Only the educated and INFORMED SW person will agree to Okun being called Yoruba.
I spent 17years in my little town here in Kogi West, and I always call myself Yoruba.
When I gained admission into a university in SW, I stopped.
I was made to feel inferior. My Yoruba accent and some mispronounced Yoruba words( imagine an Ijebu or Ilaje speaking Yoruba with their own accent) always make me stand out and I was laughed at. So why should I still claim to be who I was told I wasn't?
Although, I blended after a semester but that experience is enough to deny.
Yoruba people need history and geography lessons, too bad and poor!
Imagine someone living in face me and face you having guts to look down on you living well all because he's "proper Oyo".
Thunder faya them. Nonsense

Nonsense, bear whatever you want to bear.

AkalaJ:
@yunqdady: I've always held the view that anyone is free to be whoever he chooses to be. Your case is rather unfortunate because your obvious anger stems from firsthand experiences you had during several encounters with SW-based Yorubas. You're only human, therefore I cannot fault your reaction to these unwarranted/unpleasant experiences from your supposed kinsmen.

Their attitude towards you was borne out of sheer ignorance. Let's just say Nigeria happened to all of us; we're all victims of the geographical fraud that previous administrations perpetrated on our race to balkanize, divide, and engender this exact attitudes towards one another.

However, in spite of all of that, I would still urge you to sheathe your sword out of maturity. You have more to gain as a component of the larger yoruba family than as an ethnic minority (there's power in numbers). There may well come a time when the geographical aberration/anomaly that birthed this problem would be redressed once and for all. All the best.
He's stupid who force am?

Mtcheeew. So because some just downgrade him it means anything?

He probably never heard that in the past Ondo and Ijebu don't marry. If not things that have changed.

Mtcheeew. He should interpret their names in Okun dialect and not Oyo Yoruba

Or never listen to Yoruba music, Culture, food and studies

Nonsense.
Even the Ijebu or Egba that should be doing this no do am.

You don't have deep knowledge about what you are discussing.

* There is no language called Okun. Okun is the way ways Yorubas salute each other while working and it literally mean 'strength'

The word Okun was adopted based on the suggestions of the ace Historian, Prof Ade Obayemi and other elites from the old Kabba province as a name to identify certain Yoruba speaking people of the province that share close relationships.

There are other people that also speak Yoruba language in addition to thier distinct languages in Kogi but have assimilated substantial Nupe and Ebira population and thus consider themselves non-okun e.g Oworo and the Ogori-mangogo people respectively.

However, the most important issue is , do Okun people consider themselves as Yoruba?

The answer is an overwhelming YES.
No mind those clowns.

I dare them to interpret their senator name Adeyemi in Okun dialect.
