Until 2013, Farouk Lawan was a Northern politician to fear by Nigerian leaders. As at that time, he was in the House of Representatives, on behalf of a Kano constituency for the fourth term. And by then, he was like the Northern mole in the government against the then president, Goodluck Jonathan. However, the moment Jonathan realised this, Farouk was allegedly fed with his favourite meal – bribery, which put him in a corner he has never recovered from. Until now, he is still locked in the legal cage. Aside from billionaire, Femi Otedola testifying against Lawan that he demanded $620,000 as a bribe, a clip of video evidence was also all over the internet. Despite being in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), he could not escape Jonathan’s wrath. Since the Court of Appeal ordered a re-run of the election of Kogi West senatorial district, the polity has remained agog. The ruling dealt a blow to the once-formidable Dino Melaye, and the discussion has been about whether he would be able to return to the Senate or not. His major contender, Smart Adeyemi, who is a two-term former senator of Kogi West, is not a small player in the state’s politics. He’s also an ally of the governor, Yahaya Bello. On his part, Melaye is perceived to be a stronghold in the state. But the outcome of the last governorship primaries that left Melaye battered put this to question. As expected, the duo has already started the war of words. Adeyemi accused Melaye of manipulating his way into office using political thuggery and rigging. It appears the feud between Adams Oshiomhole, national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and Godwin Obaseki, governor of Edo state, is nowhere near ending. The two were, a few weeks ago, reported visiting each other, and working on reconciling. But as it is now, it is no longer an in-house fight. They now bruise each other publicly, with Oshiomhole accusing Obaseki of planning to dumping the APC. It is very possible that 95% of those who represent Nigeria in various international sports competition started their career outside of the country. That’s not because of any other reason, but that the local environment makes it extremely difficult to grow in any kind of field. If you don’t know people in politics or the ‘powers that be,’ then, it becomes really hard to find your way to stardom. Two athletes of Nigerian descent, Abass Abubakar and Musa Isah, who now runs for Bahrain explained how this hurdle almost crippled their career. The duo represented Bahrain in the mixed 4x400m at the ongoing World Championships in Doha, Qatar. The challenge of child marriage has been around for a while now. But unfortunately, despite the outcry against it by elite Nigerians, it has continued to grow. The fact that some politicians are even involved, made it even worse. Muhammad Sanusi II, the emir of Kano, has said the education of the girl child would be the perfect solution for this challenge. He said it’s no use to dissuade a man who wants to marry a second or a third wife, if the child is illiterate. “If I were to advise governors in the northwest and the northeast, which goal should they focus on? It’s one, and it’s a subset of one; just educate the girlchild,” Sanusi said. Biodun Fatoyinbo, the senior pastor of the Commonwealth of Zion Assembly (COZA), has been battling a rape scandal for the past three months. In every occasion, he would feign ignorance, as he is doing again now. However, Emmanuel Oset, a former spiritual father to the pastor, has allegedly revealed that the COZA pastor is an unrepentant pervert. Oset, who is the presiding pastor of Champions’ Church, Ilorin, while speaking during an interview on Arise TV, likened Biodun Fatoyinbo to the biblical Judas who despite being loved betrayed Jesus. He said there was nothing the church could do for someone who is not ready to be helped. Read full story here: https://qwenu.com/2019/09/27/biodun-fatoyinbos-well-kept-secret-is-now-exposed/ |

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, on Wednesday, said he would discard his immunity to fight a legal battle against people accusing him of corruption. The allegations, which stemmed from the rumoured strained relationship between him and President Buhari, is now a subject of discussion everywhere. However, the claim from Osinbajo has drawn discussions from legal corners on whether it would just be a political talk. Osinbajo had, in a tweet, said, “In the past few days, a spate of reckless and malicious falsehoods have been peddled in the media against me by a group of malicious individuals. “The defamatory and misleading assertions invented by this clique had mostly been making the social media rounds anonymously. I have today instructed the commencement of legal action against two individuals, one Timi Frank, and another Katch Ononuju, who have put their names to these odious falsehoods. “I will waive my constitutional immunity to enable the most robust adjudication of these claims of libel and malicious falsehood.” But speaking on the vice president’s position, the chairman, Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption, Prof. Itse Sagay, described the resolution as a serious and intricate question because it is a constitutional matter. He said the vice president does not have the capacity as an individual to waive his immunity. “However, this shows Nigerians that Osinbajo is clean from all the allegations against him. He has no skeleton in his cupboard. I can personally swear on his behalf that he will not tamper with the public fund but will rather use his personal money for the good of Nigeria if the need arises.” Continue reading here: https://qwenu.com/2019/09/26/legal-perspectives-can-yemi-osinbajo-waive-his-immunity/ |
We all know that the third term bid of a former president, Olusegun Obasanjo, ended amidst a heated political fight. It was widely rejected, and that led to a heavy polarisation within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) back in 2006. But now again, a former governor of Oyo State, Chief Rashidi Ladoja, has revealed how he was badly beaten for opposing Obasanjo’s third term agenda. That was what actually led to his impeachment in 2006. Speaking with journalists in Ibadan on Monday, Ladoja narrated how Obasanjo rejected plea from prominent Nigerians to forgive him. Unlike popular belief that late Lamidi Adedibu sent him off from office, he said Obasanjo was the brain behind it. It appears that the search for the politician that will succeed President Buhari in 2023 has already begun. Each region and different political parties are already vying for their own turn. Also, from the look of things, every other political bigwig seems to be interested in the race, except the immediate past president, Goodluck Jonathan. Without any doubt, he has a big role to play during that period, considering the fact that Nigeria has remained on the same spot since he left the office. It will be a scary turn of events if he decides to reclaim power come 2023. To confirm that he remains in a significant place in that election, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party, Senator Walid Jibrin, said the PDP BoT will embark on strategic talks and engagements with former President Goodluck Jonathan. We won’t be too surprised if, in a few days, Nigerian start comparing Omoyele Sowore to the late hero, MKO Abiola, and others like late Gani Fawehinmi. Thanks to President Buhari’s hatred for dissent, Sowore has now earned a special badge for being the people’s voice. After spending 52 days in the detention of the Department of State Services (DSS), a federal high court in Abuja has granted Sowore, the convener of #RevolutionNow protest, bail. He is to be released to Femi Falana, his counsel. Justice Taiwo Taiwo, who made the pronouncement on Tuesday, said there was no longer a subsisting order holding the SaharaReporters publisher in detention. For the past few weeks, insinuations have been flying around that the cabals within the Presidency are executing plans to strip the vice president, Yemi Osinbajo of his political powers. It became so tough in recent days that such ‘hush’ politics is now the discussion everywhere in Nigeria. To begin with, Osinbajo was relieved of some of his statutory duties in federal agencies such as the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA). Again, the social projects he is handling are being snatched from his hands. It shouldn’t be a surprise, as we have already seen this coming long before now. It’s just that no one could have thought that such politics would start this early in the new tenure. Back then when the presidency would be out on medical trips, Osinbajo had always been at battle with President Buhari’s associates, also called the “cabal.” Continue reading here: https://qwenu.com/2019/09/24/why-the-cabal-is-after-yemi-osinbajo/ |
In Nigeria, our approach to most things has always been reactionary. That’s especially true of the current federal government. It repeats itself again in the legal battle against Process and Industrial Development Limited (P$ID) case. News reported earlier on Monday that Abubakar Malami, the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), and Godwin Emefiele, governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), have led a federal government delegation to the United Kingdom to seek legal solution to the case. But why does such a step has to wait until then? The case has been lingering for a while, and Malami accepted that. So, why did we refuse to take necessary action to stop it, before it brought this national embarrassment? We can’t simply forget May 29, 1999. Not only because the day was when the fourth republic began, but also because it brought what we thought would be our final transition to democracy. Unfortunately, 19 years down the line, it seems Nigeria and its leaders have not learnt any lessons from the military period. It appears we’ve not felt the need for democracy in its real sense. If that’s not the case, how would you explain the recent clampdown on media and political opponents by the current administration? It’s already been more than three months that the current House of Representatives was inaugurated. But the event brought discord into the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which has refused to disappear since then. It was the issue of the Minority Leader, Ndudi Elumelu and six other lawmakers, who were suspended for standing against the lawmaker nominated by the PDP for the role, Kingsley Chinda. The PDP is moving to further punish other lawmakers who supported Gbajabiamila, and others, against the party’s wishes. Because of this move, both members of the PDP and other minority parties in the house are noq at war with the party’s leadership. The question is, can the PDP survive if all these people disappear? Some have suggested that President Buhari doesn’t like the opposition – to him, his political ambition or policies. In the case of Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, though he had his own errors, the president’s intolerance for people like him was a huge factor. But if the President was afraid of El-Zakzaky because of his religious beliefs, he should be more afraid of Kaduna-based Islamic scholar and preacher, Sheikh Ahmed Gunmi. Gunni is unperturbed to speak the truth, and rebuke Buhari for his poor performance. Speaking on Thursday during a meeting with a Christian colleague, Gunmi said the last general elections in which President Muhammadu Buhari was declared winner, remained the worst in Nigeria’s history. According to the Islamic cleric, video evidence made available to him showed that few people generated millions of votes in the last polls. Many Nigerians will still vividly remember how, in 2015, President Buhari assured Nigerians that he has long abandoned his dictatorial tendencies. Back then, we were scared that he may become like the military ruler we used to know. He threaded softly in his first term. Perhaps that was a trick to get Nigerians to re-elect him into office for a second term. Now that he’s back, it seems that the General Buhari we were scared of had resurfaced. Had Winifred Oyo-Ita, the embattled Head of Service of the Federation, known that her past would hunt her this bad, she would have left government since 2015. But she maintained a self-righteous stance, which has now backfired on her. It was gathered that President has sent Oyo-Ita on an indefinite suspension. That’s the same as sacking someone. What an ignoble way to end her career in the public service. She had begged the President to allow her to go on retirement, but her request was rejected. She had to suffer the consequences of her sins. For her kind of case, you can only be easily reachable to receive the maximum punishment. And as at the time when Oyo-Ita was indicted, she was in office. According to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), she is allegedly involved in some N3 billion contract scam. The rage that greeted the attack on Senator Ike Ekweremadu by members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) during a visit to Germany, has almost faded out. Of course, many Igbo politicians still harbour the fear of being attacked outside Nigeria, but the discussions have subsided. Chris Ngige, the Minister of Labour and Employment, has boasted that IPOB members can’t do anything to him. But looking at the situation, if anyone will get beaten really bad, Ngige will come first, even before Ekweremadu. Allen Onyeama, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Air Peace Airlines, has demonstrated what it means to be responsible as a privileged Nigerian. Without taking a dime, he helped hundreds of Nigerians return from South Africa amidst xenophobic attacks. He was invited by the House of Representatives on Wednesday, who applauded him for this plausible thing he did. Going forward, Air Peace would also be the main carrier of the lawmakers. It’s no longer news that kidnappers have now found their space in Abuja. From one to two, now we’re counting more than six victims. But instead of finding an immediate solution to this, the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, has chosen to play politics with these lives. In a reaction to the recent events, he said the Federal Capital Territory was safe, secure and not under any form of siege. That came despite the rise in abductions and rise in theft of vehicles across the city. One of the victims, Miss Aisha Ardo, reportedly paid $15,000 to secure her release on Sunday night. She was abducted at a popular supermarket in, Asokoro, on Saturday. That’s within the city. Also, two teenagers returning from an Islamic school at Wuse Zone 6, around 6 pm on Saturday were also said to have been abducted. The presidential villa, popularly known as Aso Rock, has this dented reputation for influencing people’s character for the worse. It seems Femi Adesina, the Special Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity, will be the latest to substantiate that claim. On Monday, he was alleged to have abused and threatened a journalist, Mr John Ameh, who works with The Punch at the Presidential Villa. Adesina used to be a media mogul before his appointment in 2015. He was known to be a publisher that was vocal against the system. What has suddenly changed? Journalists were at the Villa to cover events. But Adesina walked in and, without exchanging courtesies, began to scream and gesticulate aggressively at Ameh in the full glare of his colleagues. Leader of the Yoruba World Congress, emeritus Professor Banji Akintoye, has said that the priority of the Yoruba nation is to have its interest consistently upheld. Without this, he believes there’s no reason for being a part of Nigeria anymore. Speaking to The Punch over the weekend, Akintoye said, “restructuring is absolutely necessary for the survival of Nigeria. If Nigeria does not restructure itself, it will have to accept the dissolution of itself. If we delay restructuring any much longer, then there may be no Nigeria to talk about.” Commenting on the controversial Ruga settlements, Akintoye said "Yorubaland is not for a thing like that. What Ruga is Fulani settlement and when they settle there they will begin to oppress those living or farming close to their settlements. Nigerians were shocked last year when Aisha Alhassan, the former minister of women affairs, resigned from office in 2018. He also left the All Progressives Congress (APC), and joined the United Democratic Party (PDP). All these were because he was denied the governorship ticket of the APC in Taraba state. The party felt he was not loyal enough to represent the party. The election came, and after her shameful defeat, she’s now looking to where to save her political career. She said that she has completed arrangements to return to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). Contesting under APC in 2019, she garnered 275,966 votes to come second in the governorship polls. She didn’t even get a fifth of that in this year’s election. Continue reading: https://qwenu.com/2019/09/16/is-this-the-end-of-the-road-for-former-women-affairs-minister-mama-taraba/

It’s no longer news that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, lost their chance to upturn the victory of President Buhari and the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the tribunal. The mockery game has already begun. It even began in the courtroom where the judges compared the evidence provided by Atiku to “a drop in the ocean.” Atiku had vowed to take the case to the Supreme Court, but even at that, there’s only one way for him to win. During last Christmas, Arsenal star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang bought himself a Lamborghini worth £270,000 as a Christmas gift. That’s a lot of money, ₦97,875,000, and it left many mouths opened. But with this latest release from this Italian automobile firm, that amount is just a small percentage. Called Lamborghini Sián, the car is a hybrid, which operates on both fuel and electricity. That’s still an idea with many vehicle manufacturers. It goes for a whopping $2million, which is ₦720, 000, 000 when converted. The Sian was officially launched at the 2019 Frankfurt Auto Show a few days ago.
