On increasing salary, how many people are government workers? What's the ratio between people working for the government and those not working for them? I don't think age impacts your chance of student visa. One of the downside, however, is that you will not qualify for the temporary graduate visa (visa 485) after graduation, if you studied a Masters by coursework, due to age. If your study is a Masters by Research or PhD, you will be eligible for visa 485 so far you are not above 50.

Also, at that age (35), you may have a study gap (i.e., the time you completed your BSc may be long ago). You have to be able to justify any study gap (eg, show evidence of work, etc., during this period). So, at that age, MSc by coursework is not recommended. You can opt for a MSc by Research, to qualify for the visa 485 after graduation.
