Health / Trump Wears Mask In Public For First Time During Visit To Walter Reed by sandraade(f): 2:02am On Jul 12, 2020
Finally, Trump donned.

During a visit to Walter Reed National Medical Center on Saturday, President Donald Trump wore a face mask in front of assembled media for the first time.

Though the move was expected and had been trailed in a series of media appearances this week, it was still a noteworthy evolution for the president, who has balked at wearing protective face coverings as a deadly pandemic surged across portions of the U.S.

The navy blue mask with a gold presidential seal emblazoned on the side could be seen as Trump entered the hospital to visit wounded service members and health care workers who have been on the front lines of the coronavirus outbreak.

Military personnel, Secret Service agents and White House staff surrounding the president, including White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, all wore facial coverings.

In the hospital, Trump continued to wear his mask while speaking with wounded veterans, according to White House Deputy Press Secretary Judd Deere.

However, Trump did not wear a mask while speaking with reporters outside the White House before departing for Walter Reed, where he further explained his rationale behind wearing a covering after telling Fox News host Sean Hannity on Thursday he expected to wear one during the visit.

“I think when you're in a hospital, especially in that particular setting, where you're talking to a lot of soldiers and people that, in some cases, just got off the operating tables, I think it's a great thing to wear a mask,” Trump told reporters. “I've never been against masks, but I do believe they have a time and a place.”

The president stressed this week he didn't believe masks were necessary in areas where frequent testing was available and social distancing practices followed.

Trump's decision to wear a face covering comes after repeated calls from public health experts and lawmakers urging the president to set an example as infection rates rise in many Sunbelt states, many of which remain crucial to his reelection.

Arizona, Florida and Texas set record numbers of hospitalizations on Friday, while the U.S. set a new single-day record of nearly 64,000 coronavirus cases, according to Johns Hopkins University.

Health officials have criticized the Southern states’ Republican governors for following the White House’s lead and re-opening too early, an action they believe is largely to blame for the rise in infections.

Texas Gov. Gregg Abbott, who recently instituted a new statewide mask order after previously being opposed to one, warned the state could lock down again if its residents didn’t adhere to the mandate.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has recommended that “people wear cloth face coverings in public settings” to help prevent the spread of Covid-19, saying that masks serve as a barrier to stop droplets that contain the virus.

An ABC News/Ipsos poll released Friday found that a record 67 percent of Americans disapproved of Trump’s response to the pandemic, while 79 percent support wearing a face mask in an enclosed public space, according to a Fairleigh Dickinson University Poll.

Trump’s marks for his management of the crisis has also steadily dropped among Republicans and independents, constituencies key to his reelection in November, the ABC poll found.

Nairaland / General / A Nigerian American Black Live Matter Protester Found Dead After Going Missing by sandraade(f): 5:36pm On Jun 15, 2020
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Oluwatoyin Salau, a 19-year-old protester who begged for justice in the wake of Black lives lost, has died.

Her family confirmed the death Monday morning.

Salau was found dead Saturday night after she went missing more than a week ago, on June 6, family members told the Tallahassee Democrat of the USA TODAY Network.
Salau was one of two homicide victims discovered Saturday night in southeast Tallahassee. Police identified the suspect as Aaron Glee Jr, 49.

Victoria "Vicki" Sims, 75, who also had been reported missing, is the second victim. She was a retired state worker and grandmother well-known for her volunteerism and work in local Democratic politics.

Glee was arrested May 30 on a charge of aggravated battery causing bodily harm or disability, according to court records. On June 9, he was arrested on a charge of battery.

Salau went missing three days prior — on June 6. She was found dead Saturday night, a family member told the Democrat.

The last time Danaya Hemphill saw her friend was the day before she went missing.

In the hours before Salau went missing, she tweeted she had just been sexually assaulted.

"I had a feeling that we were not going to find Toyin alive," said Hemphill, 22.

At each demonstration, Salau had been reciting the names of Black people killed, such as Tony McDade of Tallahassee and George Floyd of Minneapolis.

“I don’t want their names gone in vain," Salau said during one protest in front of the Tallahassee Police Department last month.

Hemphill didn't think her friend's name would join that list.

"Toyin was very passionate," said Hemphill. "She was very vocal she was very loving, very spiritual, very caring.

"She was like a light in a dark room. That was Toyin."

Nairaland / General / Entire Police Unit Resigns After 2 Cops Suspended by sandraade(f): 2:53am On Jun 06, 2020
ALBANY, N.Y. – An entire unit of the Buffalo Police Department resigned from their assignments Friday after two officers were suspended amid outcry over video showing officers shoving a 75-year-old man to the ground, according to the Buffalo News and other media outlets.

All 57 of the members of the department's Emergency Response Team resigned from the unit, which responds to riots and other crowd control situations, according to the outlets. The Emergency Response Team members have not quit the police department, but have stepped down from the tactical unit, the Buffalo News reported.

Attorney Kelly V. Zarcone issued a statement from Martin Gugino, the man who was pushed to the ground, saying Gugino is "a longtime peaceful protester, human rights advocate, and overall fan of the US Constitution."

Gugino is in "serious but stable condition. He is alert and oriented," Zarcone said in the emailed statement. He requests privacy and that future protests remain peaceful.

Graphic video from WBFO shows the two officers pushing Gugino down as he approached them in a public square around an 8 p.m. curfew Thursday. Gugino stumbles back and falls, and the video shows him motionless and bleeding from his head.

"Our position is these officers were simply following orders from Deputy Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia to clear the square," said Buffalo Police Benevolent Association President John Evans. "It doesn't specify clear the square of men, 50 and under or 15 to 40. They were simply doing their job. I don't know how much contact was made. He did slip in my estimation. He fell backwards."

Asked about the resigning officers at a press conference that afternoon, Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz he would be "disappointed" if they had in fact resigned.

"If they resigned, I'm exceptionally disappointed by it because it indicates to me that they did not see anything wrong with the actions last night," Poloncarz said.

The Erie County District Attorney's Office tweeted Friday that it was continuing its investigation of the incident and that the man was unable to provide a statement to investigators Thursday night.

The officer's actions quickly drew condemnation from around the state, including Gov. Andrew Cuomo who said the "incident is wholly unjustified and utterly disgraceful."

During a press briefing Friday, Cuomo played video of the incident, watching it wide-eyed before questioning the officers’ actions.

"You see that video and it disturbs your basic sense of decency and humanity," Cuomo said.

"Why? Why? Why was that necessary? Where was the threat? It was an older gentleman. Where was the threat? And then you just walk by the person when you see blood coming from his head," he said, describing the scene.

Cuomo also urged the mayor and district attorney in Buffalo to investigate the incident and move expeditiously towards potentially bringing criminal charges against and firing the officers involved.

Cuomo highlighted the incidents before pushing a police reform agenda being considered in the state legislature.

U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer called for an investigation, according to a statement reported by WIVB-TV.

"The casual cruelty demonstrated by Buffalo police officers tonight is gut-wrenching and unacceptable," John Curr, the Buffalo chapter director for the New York Civil Liberties Union, said in a statement, adding that it should be a "wake-up call" for city leaders to address police violence.

In its initial statement on the incident, the Buffalo Police Department said a person "was injured when he tripped & fell," WIVB-TV reported. A later statement posted on the department's Facebook page said two officers had been suspended without pay and an internal affairs investigation was underway.

Mayor Byron Brown said in a statement that he and the city's police commissioner were "deeply disturbed by the video." Brown also confirmed the officers' suspension and internal affairs investigation.

"After days of peaceful protests and several meetings between myself, police leadership and members of the community, tonight's event is disheartening," Brown said.

Brown released a statement Friday saying that the city was aware of "developments related to the work assignments of certain members of the Buffalo police force."

Contingency plans were in place to ensure public safety, Brown said.

Five protesters were arrested for disorderly conduct, according to NBC affiliate WGRZ-TV. None of the police officers seen in the video has been criminally charged.

The Buffalo Police Department and the New York State Police did not immediately respond to USA TODAY's requests for comment on Thursday.

“I can assure you, Martin is a peaceable person,” said Vicki Ross, executive director of Western New York Peace Center and Latin American Solidarity Committee, an organization Gugino was involved with.

“There is no way that he was doing anything to accost or hurt. He made a judgment to stay out after the curfew because he feels that our civil liberties are so in danger, which they most certainly are.”

Ross said Gugino has been undergoing chemotherapy for cancer.

The incident comes after more than a week of protests against police brutality following George Floyd's death in Minneapolis. Floyd, who is black, died after now-fired police officer, who is white, pressed his knee into Floyd's neck for nearly nine minutes as other officers stood by.

Since Floyd's death, which has been ruled a homicide, protesters nationwide have decried police brutality and racial inequality. Some protests have been marred by violence and looting, and police have been caught on camera multiple times using force against protesters – including peaceful ones.

In Buffalo, protesters gathered Friday morning outside City Hall, where Gugino was pushed, to call for change. The crowd grew throughout the day and made its way across the street.

"I hope to continue to build on the progress we have achieved as we work together to address racial injustice and inequity in the City of Buffalo," Brown said. "My thoughts are with the victim tonight."

Religion / Pastor Who Claimed To Cure Coronavirus With Faith Dies Of Coronavirus by sandraade(f): 1:44am On May 22, 2020
A pastor and former presidential candidate in Cameroon who claimed he had cured coronavirus via laying hands has reportedly died of the infection.

Frankline Ndifor died on Saturday at the age of 39, Voice of America reported.

The authorities had to use force to enter Ndifor’s residence because his followers, who believed he was a prophet, had blocked entry as they prayed for his resurrection.

This is a pastor that has been laying hands [on
the sick] and claiming that he cures COVID-19,” one of his followers, Rigobert Che, told VOA.
0“If you, the person that claims that you are curing COVID-19, you are dead, what about the fellow people that were affected by the COVID-19? Now that he is dead, I do not know how the people that he was laying hands on will be healed.”
Dr. Gaelle Nnanga told VOA Ndifor’s followers called him to the scene. Upon arrival, Nnanga found the pastor in “agony.” Ndifor died less than 10 minutes later.

According to the BBC, Ndifor’s family and followers had planned to contest the death ruling and keep the body for his resurrection. Police needed teargas to disperse the crowd, then forcefully removed the corpse for a quick burial in line with local procedures for COVID-19 infection, The Cameroon Tribune reported.

To date, war-torn Cameroon has had 3,733 confirmed COVID-19 infections and 146 deaths, according to data collected by the Center for Systems Science and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University.

Health / Coronavirus: Leicester City Isolate Three Players Showing Coronavirus Symptoms by sandraade(f): 4:21pm On Mar 12, 2020
Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers has confirmed three of his players have shown symptoms of coronavirus and have been isolated from their team-mates.

Speaking at a news conference ahead of this weekend's scheduled Premier League match against Watford, Rodgers explained the club had acted as a precaution against the potential spread of COVID-19.

"We've had a few players that have shown symptoms and signs [of the coronavirus]," Rodgers told the media on Thursday.

"We've followed procedures and [as a precaution] they have been kept away from the squad.

"Working in football, it's about having that agility to move with what’s happening in football. We're guided by football and federations. We have to press on with our work and prepare as normal."

Stats Perform understands all players put into isolation have only displayed mild symptoms, meaning they have not met the threshold to be tested for the virus.

Rodgers is hopeful Saturday's trip to Vicarage Road goes ahead as planned but is not a fan of matches being staged behind closed doors.

"It would be a shame [if the Watford game were to be postponed], but the public's health is the most important in all of this," he said.

"The game is all about the players and the fans and if you have one of those not there, it's obviously not the same."

Rodgers also confirmed right-back Ricardo Pereira will face around six months on the sidelines with an anterior cruciate ligament injury, while playmaker James Maddison is also out with a calf problem.

Leicester lie third in the Premier League with nine games of the season remaining.

Crime / Nigerian Pastor And His Wife Jailed In UK After He Raped Children by sandraade(f): 6:36am On Mar 07, 2020
A “feared” pastor who raped children in a bogus religious ceremony over a 20-year period has been jailed.

Self-styled prophet Michael Oluronbi was found guilty in January of offences against six women and a man. Five of those attended his church.

He carried out his attacks by convincing his victims to take part in a “spiritual bathing” ritual, which he told them would “cleanse” them of evil spirits.

Judge Sarah Buckingham, sentencing him to 34 years behind bars, said his case was “one of the worst cases of sexual abuse of multiple children to come before the courts” and described him as an “arrogant, selfish and vain man”.

She said the “spiritual baths” were actually designed to “fulfil (his) insatiable sexual appetite”.

“The children feared you and this enabled you to continue your grip,” she said, sentencing Oluronbi on Friday.

“Your offending has had an extreme and severe impact on all of your complainants.

“Any attempt to suggest otherwise would be without foundation.

“You abused your position of trust – they trusted you like God.”

In statements read to the court by the prosecution, one of the victims said Oluronbi’s actions made her “question if my life was worth living”.

Oluronbi, who had blamed the devil for his actions, was convicted of 15 counts of rape, seven counts of indecent assault and two counts of sexual assault, at Birmingham Crown Court.

Oluronbi’s wife Juliana was also convicted of three counts of aiding and abetting rape and helping arrange some of the abortions of his victims, with some becoming pregnant multiple times. She was jailed for 11 years.

As a pharmacist, he would take them to clinics to end the pregnancies.

During the trial, the jury was told how Oluronbi was linked to a Christian church in Birmingham, where he formed a splinter group for about 40 adults and children, separate to the church and in another location.

In that group, he had the victims take part in “spiritual bathing”.

During the trial, Phil Bradley QC, prosecuting, told the jury: “The main tactic he employed was to claim that God had instructed him to administer ‘holy baths’ to some of his congregation in order to ‘cleanse’ them and protect them from evil influences.

“That activity began when his victims were children.

“There can be no doubt that its real purpose was to serve his sexual gratification.”

Some of the victims were raped repeatedly, leading to “unwanted pregnancies and terminations”, he told the court, and he was “revered and feared by his victims, kept a vice-like grip on many of them and continued to abuse them well into adulthood.”

More
West Midlands Police said he convinced children he could benefit them religiously, health-wise or educationally.

The force’s detective superintendent Nick Walton said: “They’d be taken upstairs to the bathroom, stripped naked, sometimes wearing a red girdle – like a sash – and he would wash them down.

“On occasion he would sexually assault them, but also take them to an adjacent bedroom and subject them to sexual assaults and rape.”

Offences took place in Birmingham and London over 20 years, dating back to the 1980s.

“Some of his victims described it as a cult,” added DS Walton.

“He has been confronted on occasions by relatives and parents. He never made admissions, and even blamed the devil for it on some occasions.”

Oluronbi would sometimes laugh in court while giving evidence, DS Walton said. He worked as a pastor until his arrest.

He was arrested at Birmingham Airport while trying to leave for Nigeria – where he comes from – with ceremonial belongings and a sum of cash.

He had recently been confronted by one of his victims. Police became aware of his crimes after a victim came forward to them.

Police believe there may be more victims and urged them to get in touch.
