However, given the long wait times for visa appointment times now, it is not improbable that one buys a receipt with an old passport and shows up for their interview months later with an updated passport number.

Continue trying to call them and speak to a representative. Just let them know that you paid with an old passport number and you have an updated passport now and if this will be an issue. This is about the only thing that you can do now. 333k for a visa application is a lot of money.

You have to apply to their embassy here in Nigeria as soon as possible. Book an appointment date and submit all requirement including bank statement showing funds. It should take max 14 working days. You won't be able to board from Nigeria without transit visa.
If your flight date it close, I suggest you reschedule to allow for visa application.

The 1.2mn is charging you as his fee is outrageous. If you must use an agent there are other legit ones that charge way less than that. You can submit this application yourself or try someone. Just don't be desperate so he doesn't feed on you.

I received a text message that my passport is ready for collection. However, the pick up date on the enrollment form stated 26th January 2022. Should I go ahead to the passport office or wait till the stated pickup date?
It's DIY, 32 pages (renewal). Captured on the 29th of November, message received 16th December.

Collection date will be stated on your enrollment ID paper. It won't take long if it's for 64 pages. I renewed for 32 pages on Monday. Collection date is stated for Jan 26 if there are no hindrances.

I didn't apply for it, as there is no separate application to that effect. It's by departmental nomination. Each departments have their own criteria for nomination which I am not privy to. All I know was I received an email stating I have been nominated for it, then later I received confirmation email saying the GPS has approved it. I hope my answer is helpful.
