I was listening to a radio station this morning... I caller called...and said, "Buhari cannot do anything in Nigeria, that he doesn't have the capacity to transform Nigeria.." the presenter cut him off...that they don't tolerate hate speech... I was like, so, to criticize a govt now means hate speech?

Besides, to love a person or group is a choice.
the govt can not force me or anyone else to love or hate another...
it's my choice...
what the govt can do is to appeal to Nigerians to love themselves....
if I hate you, I hate you... even if I didn't say it, it won't change anything.

It won't be possible in Nigeria though because there is a mental shift on how we view speeches. There's a little upward spiritual(not religion) movement that wouldn't permit any avenue for fascism or absolute despotism.

Osinbajo simply uttered words with neither wings nor direction. His words won't fly. He'd have to sign laws to that effect for it to have effect. Besides that, he is simply chasing the wind like other leaders.

One would have expected that the method recommended by the current Nigerian government in combating the increasing level of hate speeches was preventive and constitutional. Last week, Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbanjo, said that hate speeches now amount to treason. That anyone found guilty of making utterances capable of inciting the public will be given the treason treatment.

One would have expected something more like a bill signed into law after proper examination by the National Assembly. It didn’t happen. He simply made a statement that is neither founded nor different from what all the other leaders who governed this country ever said. He expected this reactionary method to be implemented immediately. He forgot about laws.

If a person incites the people with a speech laced with hatred and treason, what exact laws would be used in prosecuting such a person? The mere words of the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, or the laws created to tackle such statement? Personally, I find it hard to believe that our leaders, both past and present, have no clue on how to solve hate speeches. They simply have no balls or will to fight the menace.

Those groups at Wuse are accusing CB of what's he's accusing them of - that he was there to disrupt businesses and cause trouble, to cause the maiming and death of innocent people. They are right to have pursued him out of that precinct.

I witnessed an accident one early morning where a woman ran into one of dangote truck carelessly parked idly on a busy motorway at Abule Egba, Lagos and died instantly.

Heard a Road safety officials on ground saying they would have loved to impound the truck but unfortunately whoever does that would have himself to blame and job at stake. I witnessed all this myself I was not told. This is a first hand information.

Dangote is not all he says he is.

People don't know the man. It is similar to what happens when Mark Zuckerberg is called humble and good. An idea thief who sells our information to the highest bidder. Any officer that attempts to impound a Dangote truck is finished.

Why are they complaining? Are they complaining because of the competition that will arise or because they are against prostitution? Obviously the former.

Buhari's ability for truthfulness and philosophic mien has been his only asset with the masses. You won't catch him giving out inducements for him to be elected. He was despised by those who don't look beyond their nose even in the first outing, but the people who seek the truth always come to the realization that he has their interests as paramount. For that reason, his leadership is principled, enduring and not like the one of situational ethicists, the ones Socrates condemned as Athenian 'democrats.' Just ask yourself why Buhari's support base is always with him, unlike GEJ, wh complained of being abandoned and on the other hand his group are complaining of being abandoned by him.

Lol. You mention Buhari and Philosophy and Truthfulness? What is Philosophy? Smh. I won't be tempted to shift the direction of this post. The question you have refused to answer, are the men who tried lynching Charly Boy right in their agitation? Simple. Is it wrong to do that in a democracy? Don't hinge all your hopes on democracy or it becomes your god. In The Republic, Plato outlined those who are qualified for leadership. They are what he called philosopher kings or aspiring philosophers. A leader must PHILOSOPHIZE. So, the first and most important prerequisite is wisdom, to be wise, and that does not include playing to the gallery or being overdramatic. It is foolishness, a facade, a simulation with a motive to deceive. It is unbecoming of a leader, whose main accessory is thinking. What we're having as a democracy these days is a caricature of the real. It is bestial, pedestrian and emotional. It is poverty of philosophy (wisdom) when you have unprincipled vagabond misleading the people in the name of democracy. How can the cross dressing, punk looking CB be an advocate of democracy as Plato defined it. Mind you, you were lacing your arguments with morality. I'll never be an advocate of leadership of waywards - gays, drug addicts, kidnappers, and the criminally minded, as is happening in America, where you have a male governor married to a male partner.

Plato? The Republic? Are you sure you are not misrepresenting what that book talked about? The Republic was hundred percent against Democracy. Let me shock you. What Socrates proposed in the Republic was wrong–Monarchical Fascism. That's off this discussion.

You are missing the point. Ours is a democracy and as along as it is, what is legally binding is what is sound. If we are to go by those morals about Philosopher-King you are trying to switch to, the first question will be if your current President with all his poor utterances and actions qualifies as one. Then even your moral prism is called to question.

As for what you call jungle justice - I can't condemn the state. It has the right to disrupt, arrest and even prosecute those it sees as breaching the peace. I am not condemning CB either. It's his motive that's not clear to me. You say Return r Resign: Return against medical advice and if it's Resigning on what basis? On what authority are you and CB basing your arguments. Is it legal (constitutional), medical or on sentiments?

How is situational ethics wrong in a democracy? Isn't Democracy about the legal correctness of issues?

I am by that statement supporting common sense. But still it's a matter of believe. If by all means CB believes that Buhari is not good for Nigeria, he has every reason to protest. I don't share his views, so I won't see it his way. And again, as I pointed out, there are cases like Buhari's and none of you or CB was seen demanding those should resign.

Your statement is off. The question is about the morality of Jungle Justice. Pointing at other cases of stupidity by elected officials is a different matter. Condemn jungle justice when you see it. That's the matter here. Anyone can choose whenever they deem fit to protest against evil, timing doesn't justify evil.

He didn't bend to the culture. He only said what he could under the circumstance by charging people to be tolerant of one another's religions. It is like saying "this can be avoided. Let us work hand in hand to ensure that it does not repeat itself". When the killing of blacks by American police became rampant, Obama charged all Americans to be concerned about it. It is the least he could do while promising justice for the affected family.

That's not what it is like. It is like saying "if she had tolerated their religion she wouldn't have died". That's true but it was a very poor thing to say. It gives support rather than condemn the madness.

The President, just like others before him, showed that desire to maintain the status quo. He showed that people's emotions supersede whatever rationale found in any democratic and human society.

Obama didn't respond to the killings by insinuating that blacks should respect the feelings of the whites. His statement was attuned to the dictates of any rational democracy. Ours was different.

I don't know what you all expected the president to say. He, just like every other Nigerian, knows that we don't yet have a very efficient police (except he wants to lie to himself to feel good). Our police is far from good. The least the president could do in the meantime is to ask people to promote tolerance. If there is tolerance, there would be peace. If you expected more from him, then you should endeavour to read his full speech. Because he said more than the words in bold.

If there is a culture of recklessness should the president bend to this culture or rise above them so that others will follow his example? If all presidents keep making statements like that who then will inspire the right thinking?

My point is don't go to a market in SE and protest or be misperceived as abusing Ojukwu or the lesser god like Nnamdi. Even the girlish look of Charley is enough to draw a crowd to him and be mistaken as a homo in that environment; and you know what that means. Just use a little sense in whatever you're doing unless your name is Mr. Sorry.

There's a difference between opposing a government and being a good man and having capacity to run this country. That's not even the point. The point is, the creation of a culture of respect for the rule of law and commonsense. If we had not institutionalized evil the thought of lynching Charly Boy wouldn't have come up.

Bros, this nation belongs to us all. In what is clearly a scramble for the soul of this nation, I and millions of other well-meaning Nigerians that staged a bloodless revolution in 2015 to take back our nation, have taken our stand. We stand with Buhari! We stand with better Nigeria! We stand with change!

Months to the 2015 presidential election, Doyin Okupe could not help but acknowledge that Nigerians had rallied round Buhari with "Sai Baba" renting the air. Today, that same crowd is still there.

Charly Boy can go on to build a house in Fountain square, but until he beams his mirror on our self-serving NASS and money-for-judgement judiciary, Charles Oputa is completely on his own.

You have a point but did you read the article to understand the point it is trying to convey? When did it become unconstitutional and warrant jungle justice for a person to protest against whatever thing, no matter how silly, he feels is worth protesting for? Try to read the op.

You think the men who organised and partook in the attempted lynching of Late Justice Oputa’s Son, Charles Oputa, also known as Charly Boy, are the few men you saw that day? Do you really think that those ordinary men tried to put him to death because they cared so much about truth and justice and patriotic to the country they were trying to kill for? You think they did it simply because they were supporters of the President, Muhammadu Buhari?

You think they tried it because they are the most backward of this country’s backward citizens? All Charly Boy wanted was to give the country a face lift. He, like so many others, are tired of having a visiting President. The weak cord binding the fibres of this country’s soul has been weakened further in the man’s absence. Charly was, in his words, trying to wipe out our generational dumbness as a people. And that was what it seemed like.
