Governor Adegboyega Oyetola of Osun State and some members of his cabinet were hurriedly ferried out of the crossover party to herald year 2020 organised by the state government when suspected thugs disrupted the event in the early hours of Wednesday. The event, which was held at the Nelson Mandela Freedom Park, Osogbo, ended abruptly some minutes to 1am, when some hoodlums started throwing stones towards the direction of dignitaries including the governor, his wife, Kafayat Oyetola, and Chief of Staff to the Governor, Dr Charles Akinola. One person, whose name could not be ascertained as of the time of filing this report, was said to have been arrested by security agents in connection with the attack. Other dignitaries at the event were the state chairman of the APC, Gboyega Famoodun; Secretary to the State Government, Wole Oyebamiji, and the Commissioner for Special Duties and Regional Integration, Lekan Badmus. Before the event was disrupted, there were musical performances by various artistes and presentation of gifts. But the programme was disrupted when some people, suspected to be political thugs, suddenly started hurling stones in the direction of Oyetola and other dignitaries. An eyewitness simply identified as Kazeem, told our correspondent that some men bearing weapons were seen entering the venue of the party some minutes to 1am. He said, “Governor Oyetola had already addressed the gathering and performers had come on stage to entertain the people. But few minutes to 1am, some men bearing weapons were seen entering the venue. Before long, they started throwing stones at the direction where dignitaries that attended the event were sitting. “When the stoning became intense, operatives of the Department of State Services had to fire several shots into the air to disperse the crowd and move the governor and other dignitaries out of the venue. I had to run towards Olaiya Junction before I eventually saw a commercial motorcyclist that took me out of the area.” More in Home We’re not worried by troop withdrawal – Rivers police Nigerian Air Force redeploys 76 senior officers in shake-up Nigeria’s oldest World War II veteran, Pa Aduku, dies at 101 Thugs disrupt Osun crossover party, gov ferried to safety We’re not worried by troop withdrawal – Rivers police It was also learnt that a suspect was arrested by the DSS operatives at the scene in connection with the attack as security agencies in the state were said to have launched probe into the matter. When contacted, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Ismail Omipidan, said the governor was not attacked. He said what was being regarded as an attack on Oyetola, was actually a clash between two rival groups outside the venue of the event. The CPS stated, “It was not an attack on the governor and members of his cabinet. During festivities, there is always exuberance by the youth. Two groups were fighting outside where we were holding our programme. “If it were to be an attack on the governor, I am sure by now, we would have heard that the governor’s security men shot two or three people in an attempt to rescue their principal. “So, it was just some miscreants who were fighting outside where we were holding our crossover party. Immediately after we left the venue yesterday (Wednesday), we still went to the Ansarudeen Mosque, Sabo, where a prayer was being held to usher in the New Year.” An Assistant Director of Operations, DSS, Osun Command, in an interview with our correspondent, said all enquiries into the matter should be directed to the Chief Security Officer to the governor. https://punchng.com/thugs-disrupt-osun-crossover-party-gov-ferried-to-safety/ |

There is a standoff currently going on in Mpape in Abuja between a gang of armed robbers, the police and Nigerian Army after the hoodlums invaded a first generation bank. The armed robbers were said to have stormed the bank, shooting sporadically into the air to scare people away. They were said to have succeeded in gaining entry into the banking hall. Shortly after gaining access, the police and army arrived the scene but the robbers had refused to come out of the bank. It was gathered that one of the robbers, attempted to force his way out was shot but remained indoor with gunshot injury. As at time of filling this story, the security agents were making efforts to break into the bank and end the siege. http://saharareporters.com/2019/12/28/breaking-police-army-prevent-armed-robbers-escaping-abuja-bank |

Leader of a leading Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to, without further delay, break the country into its original units if he does not want to restructure. Adebanjo told the Sun that anarchy looms in the country. He emphasized that the constitution foisted on the people had been the cause of the nation’s problems. The elder statesman said that Nigeria should be broken so that each group goes to its place and enjoy peace. According to him, there has been disobedience to rule and illegal detention of persons who speak out against the government of the day. “When a court gives an instruction, and you don’t obey; when you ask people to be detained without trial, you obstruct the rule of law? That is unfortunate,” Adebanjo said. “We are moving towards anarchy, except we want to deceive ourselves. The court that is supposed to be the sanctuary of the common man has been desecrated, and yet the people who should protest keep quiet. We are already in anarchy. “Have I not been vindicated? I have not changed from that position at all. Anarchy has taken over in this country. “We must return the country to true federalism, where the regions should be autonomous, and let everybody be ruled according to the dictate of his place, then, this culture of autocracy and authority over everybody would be stopped. “It is because of this culture of autocracy that the president doesn’t want to do anything to change the constitution. “Since the president doesn’t want to go back to a constitution we agreed on at independence, it is better everybody goes to his area and enjoy peace. “I have said it and I have challenged him and he has not denied, and I said why should he hesitate to go back to the constitution we had at independence, which was approved by Azikiwe, Awolowo and Sardauna, and I said, he can never be more intelligent, more educated than Sardauna, and he has not told us why he would not go back to that constitution. “So, what is the problem, if he is serious about keeping this country together in unity, in peace? Let’s restructure and go back to true federalism and every other thing is just going round the clock. “That is where I am; that since it has turned this way, let this country break and let everybody go to his place and have peace. “I have told the president to go back to the interview I had with Vanguard before he was elected and I have been vindicated in all that I said in the interview.” https://dailypost.ng/2019/12/28/president-buhari-told-to-divide-nigeria-into-its-original-units-immediately/

FLASHBACK: THE SPEECH DELIVERED BY BRIGADIER JOSHUA NIMYEL DOGONYARO AFTER BUHARI'S DETHRONEMENT ON AUGUST 27, 1985 I, Brigadier Joshua Nimyel Dogonyaro, of the Nigerian Army, hereby make the following declaration on behalf of my colleagues and members of the Nigerian Armed Forces. Fellow country men, the intervention of the military at the end of 1983 was welcomed by the nation with unprecedented enthusiasm. Nigerians were unified in accepting the intervention and looked forward hopefully to progressive changes for the better. Almost two years later, it has become clear that the fulfillment of expectations is not forthcoming. Because this generation of Nigerians and indeed future generations have no other country but Nigeria, we could not stay passive and watch a small group of individuals misuse power to the detriment of our national aspirations and interest. No nation can ever achieve meaningful strides in its development where there is an absence of cohesion in the hierarchy of government; where it has become clear that positive action by the policy makers is hindered because as a body it lacks a unity of purpose. It is evident that the nation would be endangered with the risk of continuous misdirection. We are presently confronted with that danger. In such a situation, if action can be taken to arrest further damage, it should and must be taken. This is precisely what we have done. The Nigerian public has been made to believe that the slow pace of action of the Federal Government headed by Major-General Muhammadu Buhari was due to the enormity of the problems left by the last civilian administration. Although it is true that a lot of problems were left behind by the last civilian government, the real reason, however, for the very slow pace of action is due to lack of unanimity of purpose among the ruling body; subsequently, the business of governance has gradually been subjected to ill-motivated power play considerations. The ruling body, the Supreme Military Council, has, therefore, progressively been made redundant by the actions of a select few members charged with the day-to-day implementation of the SMC’s policies and decision. The concept of collective leadership has been substituted by stubborn and ill advised unilateral actions, thereby destroying the principles upon which the government came to power. Any effort made to advise the leadership, met with stubborn resistance and was viewed as a challenge to authority or disloyalty. Thus, the scene was being set for systematic elimination of what, was termed oppositions. All the energies of the rulership were directed at this imaginary opposition rather than to effective leadership. The result of this misdirected effort is now very evident in the country as a whole. The government has started to drift. The economy does not seem to be getting any better as we witness daily increased inflation. The nation’s meager resources are once again being wasted on unproductive ventures. Government has distanced itself from the people and the yearnings and aspirations of the people as constantly reflected in the media have been ignored. This is because a few people have arrogated to themselves the right to make the decisions for the larger part of the ruling body. All these events have shown that the present composition of our country’s leadership cannot, therefore, justify its continued occupation of that position. Furthermore, the initial objectives and programmes of action which were meant to have been implemented since the ascension to power of the Buhari Administration in January 1984 have been betrayed and discarded. The present state of uncertainty and stagnation cannot be permitted to degenerate into suppression and retrogression. We feel duty bound to use the resources and means at our disposal to restore hope in the minds of Nigerians and renew aspirations for a better future. We are no prophets of doom for our beloved country, Nigeria. We, therefore, count on everyone’s cooperation and assistance. I appeal to you, fellow countrymen, particularly my colleagues in arms to refrain from any act that will lead to unnecessary violence and bloodshed among us. Rest assured that our action is in the interest of the nation and the armed forces. In order to enable a new order to be introduced, the following bodies are dissolved forthwith pending further announcements: (a) The Supreme Military Council (b) The Federal Executive Council (c) The National Council of States. All seaports and airports are closed, all borders remain closed. Finally, a dusk to dawn curfew is hereby imposed in Lagos and all state capitals until further notice. All military commanders will ensure effective maintenance of law and order. Further announcements will be made in due course. God bless Nigeria. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.thecable.ng/flashback-coup-speech-overthrew-buhari-august-27-1985/amp
