Fighting insurgents: Zulum releases 70 surveillance vehicles to army, others

Borno Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum on Friday released 70 new surveillance vehicles to support the Nigerian Army, police and volunteers in the civilian JTF and hunters involved in fighting boko haram.

The vehicles were released at the launch of a rapid response squad which held at the Shehu's palace in Maiduguri. Top officers of the military, police and volunteers were at the venue.

The Governor had released 160 surveillance vehicles between June and September, 2019 also handed to security agencies and volunteers fighting the insurgents.

Of the latest Hilux vehicles released, Governor Zulum directed that a number be used by hunters and civilian JTF to patrol Maiduguri - Damboa road. Vehicles painted in military colours were received by the theatre command of operation lafiya dole. Police and other security agencies were also part of the allocation.

The Governor assured citizens of his administration's commitment to security of lives and property.

"I have said a number of times that this administration will not hesitate to take any measure or make any sacrifice in order to ensure peace and security returns to our state. As the chief security officer of Borno state, it is my constitutional and moral responsibility to do whatever I possibly can in trying to secure the lives of citizens and doing that is the whole essence of government in the first place” Zulum said.

The Governor called on traditional and community leaders to re-dedicate themselves to mobilizing participation in vigilance and generating local intelligence. He warned that under no condition must any citizen harbour insurgents and those perpetrating criminal activities.

"We cannot succeed in winning a lasting peace if we do not give maximum support to our security operatives by giving them information about the identities of culprits and their hideouts. On no account should we protect or hide anybody with the evil intention of destroying our state. The consequence of conspiracy is gracious”.

Zulum praised the military, other security establishments and volunteers for their sacrifices in battling boko haram in Borno.

Theatre commander of operation lafiya, represented by the deputy, Major General M.G. Ali thanked Zulum for being consistently in support of the military through far reaching interventions.

Before remarks by the commander and the Governor, Commissioner of Justice and Attorney General of the state, Bar. Kaka Shehu Lawan, whose ministry deals with public rights to security protection, said the launch was part of multiple approaches being deployed in trying to contain the boko haram.

Alleged kidnap kingpin, Chukwudimeme Onwuamadike, alias Evans has said he could estimate the financial value of his victims from a short distance.

Evans said this in a video played during his trial in an Ikeja High Court on Friday during the cross-examination of the Investigating Police Officer (IPO) Insp. Idowu Haruna by Mr Emmanuel Ochai, the defence counsel to Victor Aduba, one of Evans’ co-defendants.

The alleged kidnap kingpin, in the video, was sitting on a sofa and confessing to Haruna about various kidnappings he masterminded.

Evans gave the details of his alleged victims who mostly paid ransoms in six-figure foreign currencies with the exception of two alleged victims who paid ransoms of $1million and $2.3million each.

In the video, Haruna who is also a member of the Inspector General of Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT) asked Evans how he mapped out strategies to kidnap his alleged victims, Evans while smiling, replied simply “when you see someone that has money you will know”.

The alleged kidnapper, in the video, told the IPO that he knew that the individuals he and his alleged gang members kidnapped will pay the ransoms even if it involving selling their property to raise the funds.

He noted that through a contact who was in prison, he was able to procure arms for his kidnap operations.

He said in the video that a pharmaceutical boss, Mr Donatius Dunu who had already paid a ransom of 223,000 Euros had not finished paying the ransom in full before escaping and alerting the police.

A cargo ship that was seized last month with nearly 20 tons of cocaine on board — with an estimated street value of $1.3 billion — belongs to JP Morgan Chase, a source familiar with the situation confirmed to CBS News. U.S. Customs and Border Protection said this was the largest vessel ever seized in the agency's 230-year history.

The ship, the MSC Gayane, is owned by JP Morgan Asset Management clients through a transportation fund managed by the bank, a source said. JP Morgan leased the ship to Mediterranean Shipping Co., a Switzerland-based shipping company, which is solely responsible for the vessel's crews and operations.

JP Morgan Chase declined to comment on the record. Mediterranean Shipping Co. said in a statement, "Unfortunately, shipping and logistics companies are from time to time affected by trafficking problems." The shipping company said it is cooperating with U.S. law enforcement on the investigation. Neither JP Morgan Chase nor MSC are targets of the criminal investigation.

The U.S. Justice Department said agents boarded the ship on June 17 after it arrived at the Packer Marine Terminal in Philadelphia, and seized 19.76 tons of cocaine. On the Fourth on July, CBP seized the ship itself for possible forfeiture to the U.S.

"A seizure of a vessel this massive is complicated and unprecedented — but it is appropriate because the circumstances here are also unprecedented," U.S. Attorney William M. McSwain said in a statement.

The ship, which was built in 2018 and flew under the flag of Liberia, had traveled through South America and the Bahamas before arriving in Philadelphia, according to Marine Traffic.

Several crew members on the ship have been charged with knowingly and intentionally conspiring with each other and others to possess cocaine, the Justice Department said. A federal criminal investigation is ongoing

Tracked for years...wiped out by a drone: How Qassem Soleimani was targeted by 230mph laser guided Hellfire missile fired from near-silent US MQ-9 Reaper drone after years of intelligence tracking his whereabouts

Hunter-killer drone struck at 230mph

Local militia commander Abu Muntather al-Hussaini said two missiles hit the car carrying Soleimani, 62, and al-Muhandis, 66. The second car was struck by a single missile. They were said to have been launched by an unmanned MQ-9 ‘hunter-killer’ drone sent from the US Central Command headquarters in Qatar.

Piloted by a two-man crew hundreds of miles away, the 230mph drone can carry out precision strikes and relay images of the attack to commanders anywhere in the world. The $64million (£49million) Reaper carries four laser-guided Hellfire missiles with 38lb warheads capable of destroying a tank, along with Paveway bombs.

Aviation experts said its flight was ‘nearly silent’, meaning its intended victims would have had little or no warning of its approach.

Fresh trouble is brewing for a former President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, as the Kwara State Government has set up a panel to retrieve no fewer than 90 properties from him and others.
The State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, said the properties were owned by the state but converted to personal use by Saraki and others.
AbdulRazaq said the 90 properties, built with public funds, were allegedly unlawfully appropriated by some officials of the past administration.
He said the development underpins the impunity with which the state was almost run aground.
The properties were those uncovered by a committee AbdulRazaq set up to probe the handling of public assets since 1999.
The outcome of the work of the committee, headed by Senator Sulaiman Ajadi, is to be implemented by another committee to be chaired by a former Chief Judge of the State, Raliat Elelu-Habeeb.
The Administration of Saraki, while he held sway as Governor, sacked Elelu-Habeeb in 2009.
The Supreme Court reinstated her on February 18, 2012.
AbdulRazaq said: “The (Senator Ajadi) committee did a very good job.
“They submitted two reports and we’re waiting for the final report.
“It is unfortunate that from my little reading of it so far, people just shared government property as if it was their fiefdom.
“They did not even think for one second that it was government property.
“For example, you give property to Harmony Holdings to invest on behalf of the state as trust and those in Harmony Holdings just shared the properties among themselves, even selling below the valuation prices.
“Even those in government did the same thing.
“There is a new layout called New GRA.
“None of them went there to build new houses because it was cheaper to pick government houses for next to nothing rather than build their own houses.
“We will look at the recommendations.
“In fact, some of them just live in those houses without paying anything, while most of them only started paying after the election was won and lost to the extent that the state government does not have enough accommodation to accommodate dignitaries and traditional rulers from other states to host them rather than putting them in the hotel.
“That’s how they shared the property and we are looking at more than 90 properties which they carved out for themselves.
“We’ll go back to the report of the panel and make sure the proper thing is done.”
The Kwara State Government had last week demolished the structures on the land Saraki’s father and former Senate Leader, late Dr. Abubakar Olusola Saraki, allegedly illegally acquired years back.
Saraki had taken over the running of the property, known as Ile Arugbo, after the demise of his father.
