PoliticsEnd Border Closure In National Interest, Falana Advises Buhari by sarrki(op): 5:29pm On Oct 24, 2019
Human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mr Femi Falana, has advised the Federal Government to end the closure of the land borders into the country.

He said it would be in the national interest for the government to call off the border closure.

Rather than continue to close the land borders, Falana advised the Federal Government to “urgently dialogue with Nigeria’s neighbouring countries to jointly fight the menace of smuggling, which necessitated the border closure by Nigeria.”

The lawyer gave the advice in a statement on Thursday while delivering a paper on “Rule of Law, Good Governance and Economic Development” at the annual conference of the ECOWAS Court of Justice in Accra, Ghana.

He urged the Federal Government to reject the endorsement of its border closure policy by the International Monetary Fund.

He described IMF’s endorsement of the border closure policy as “a deliberate design to weaken ECOWAS regional integration agenda.”

Falana said, “Border closure is inconsistent with the letter and spirit of ECOWAS Protocol on Free Movement of Persons, Residence and Establishment and the African Continental Free Trade Agreement. The endorsement of the IMF is a deliberate design to weaken the ECOWAS regional integration agenda.

“The borders should be reopened without any further delay as it cannot be sustained for too long without serious repercussions for the Nigerian economy.

“The neighbouring countries may retaliate by imposing a ban on goods being exported from Nigeria by air. They may also close down Nigerian banks and other businesses operating in other member states of the ECOWAS.

“Instead of resorting to the unilateral closure of borders the Federal Government should drag the Republics of Benin and Niger to the Court of Justice of the ECOWAS for breaching the ECOWAS Protocol by allegedly encouraging the smuggling of petrol, rice and other products. In the alternative, smuggling should be addressed like terrorism which is being jointly combated by Nigeria and her neighbours.”

Falana argued that border closure was tantamount to imposing undue punishment on law-abiding corporate bodies and community citizens “because of the criminal activities of a few trans-border smugglers.”

He added, “The Federal Government should expose the smugglers by arresting and prosecuting them. The smugglers in Nigeria and the neighbouring countries are well-known by the security agencies. Without official connivance, the crime of smuggling cannot thrive in the region.”

He also advised the Federal Government to deploy technology in border monitoring as a way of checking and tracking smugglers.

He said, “Apart from monitoring the borders with technology, the Federal Government should take advantage of the ECOWAS Protocol Relating to the re-exportation within ECOWAS of goods imported from third countries. Under the Protocol Benin, Togo and Ghana are only entitled to charge administrative fees in respect of goods whose destination is Nigeria

Jonathan kinsmen, others dump PDP for APC in Bayelsa

By Mike Odiegwu, Yenagoa

Grassroots politicians and kinsmen of former President Goodluck Jonathan, Chief Robert Enogha and Chief Claudius Enegesi have dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the November 16 governorship election in Bayelsa State.

Prior to his defection, Enogha was the Chairman, Bayelsa Environmental Sanitation Authority and former two-time member of the Bayelsa House of Assembly.

Enogha, who was until his defection one of the restoration leaders in Ogbia, was also a former Commissioner for Environment.

Enegesi, one of the political associates of Jonathan, was a Speaker in the old Rivers State when Ada George was the governor.

The party stalwart, who was the pioneer Chairman of the PDP in Bayelsa when the party was formed in 1998, was a former national executive member of the party and a former caucus chairman of PDP, Ogbia chapter.

Also In Nembe, Chief Bright Erewari-Igbeta, a former House of Assembly member and presently Special Adviser to the Governor on Environment resigned his appointment from the government and also from the party.

In the same council, Chief James Jephthah, aka Octopus after series of meeting with leaders and supporters of PDP under the Octopus Umbrella said he and his political associates had decided to withdraw their membership of the PDP.

But Enigha, while joining the APC, cited dictatorial tendencies in PDP as a reason for his decision to leave the party.

He said: “I write to formally inform you of my withdrawal of membership from the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP). I am doing this with so much pain as a founding member of the party which was truly democratic as at then.

“I must acknowledge the immense benefit and experience I have gathered over the years through service as a loyal and faithful member. However I have lost confidence in the party’s ability to accept where the opinion of majority counts, hence my resignation”.

Also in Brass, Chief Beimo Spiff the coordinator of the PDP governorship campaign council in Brass Local Government Area and brother to Senator Inatimi Rufus Spiff, Chairman of the PDP reconciliation committee, dumped the party for the APC.

Spiff and his supporters were received by the Secretary of the party, Alabo Martins.

Beimo- Spiff in his letter of resignation addressed to the Chairman of the party said he was resigning from the party due to some “despicable injustices in the party

Indomie is its most popular product, that's why it is mentioned, but the company is also into real estate.

Its real estate arm is a huge investor in the Lekki Deep Sea Port project and that's the port that they are referring to. The Lekki Port is part of the Lekki Free Trade Zone and the Lagos State Government has been working on the project since the early 2000s (it's been planned on paper long before that).

Meanwhile, Dangote has already built a massive jetty in the area because the Apapa Port could not handle the equipment that he needs for his refinery.
Thanks for the heads up

President Muhammadu Buhari has commended the Nigeria Police Force for the discovery of a child-theft racket in Kano State and fake correctional centers in Kaduna and Katsina states.

DAILY POST recalls that the Police last Monday discovered another torture centre meant to be a reformation place for children with character deformation in Daura, Katsina State.

The Police raided the centre following a riot by the inmates over excessive abuses.

Reacting to the discovery, Buhari in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, on Saturday, urged the police to sustain these good efforts across the country.
He noted that such arrests were in line with his commitment to human rights and dignity of the citizens regardless of their age, religion and ethnicity.

Buhari said he would not support criminality under any guise, including the abduction of children and selling them off illegally.

I know one of you will try to link Awolowo to all of this to absolve the coup plotter of the blame and change the narrative of an Igbo coup.

Firstly, can you tell me the link and friendship that existed between Awolowo and the barrack boys you mentioned up there that will make them massacre other tribe leaders for Awolowo to become president.

Secondly, how could Awolowo a civilian who was in prison at that time suddenly become president after the barrack boys massacre other tribe leaders. Will Awolowo a civilian be suddenly made the commander in chief as a soldier or what? If it’s gonna be a democratic settings, have you ever heard where someone assumed presidency position in a democracy without being voted in?

Why did the Igbo man pre-1966 suddenly become Awolowo sympathizer after they already aligned with the north to deny Awo of forming the government?

Even if your conspiracy theory were to be true, why didn’t Ojukwu release Awo from prison? Why was it that Gowon was the one that later released Awo?

The coup is an Igbo coup, this is a self evident truth that will linger over the history of Nigeria for centuries.
