The Canadian economy lost 2,200 jobs in June and the unemployment rate ticked up slightly to 5.5 per cent as more people sought work, the government statistical agency reported on Friday.

The jobless rate was up 0.1 percentage points from May, as an additional 30,000 people began looking for work, Statistics Canada said. The number of unemployed rose to 1.1 million people.

Yet Canada’s jobless rate remained near its lowest level in more than 40 years.

The number of full-time employees rose, while the number of self-employed or independent workers declined by more than 41,000 from May, the government agency said.

Job losses in June were highest in the manufacturing, construction, natural resources, and wholesale and retail trade sectors.

Employment increased in the health care and social assistance, education, transportation, information, leisure and warehousing sectors.

More people aged 55 and above — particularly men — were working in June, while males aged 25 to 54 were less likely to have jobs.

There was little change among women or males in other age groups.

senior Iranian official has threatened that his country will wipe out Israel in 30 minutes,

Iran’s Mehr News Agency reports that Mojtaba Zolnour, the chairman of the Iranian parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, threatened Israel with retaliation that would entirely destroy the country.


“If the U.S. attacks us, only half an hour will remain of Israel’s lifespan,” Zolnour said on Monday, according to Mehr.

However, this is not the first time Zolnour has threatened Israel.

He gives Israel slightly more leeway this time than he did in his previous threats.


Two years ago, un 2017, Zolour threatened the U.S. and then expanded his threat to include Israel.

The US army’s fifth fleet is “all within the range of Iran’s missile systems and they will be razed to the ground if the enemy makes a mistake,” Zonour had said.

Doubling down on Karimpour’s threat, he added, “And only 7 minutes are needed for the Iranian missile to hit Tel Aviv.”

My column on the back page of today’s Nigerian Tribune. Snippet: On the surface, it sounds counterintuitive, even ridiculously counterfactual, to suggest that an unreflective Fulani supremacist like Muhammadu Buhari is the single greatest threat to members of his ethnic group. But it’s true. Here is why.
Although I had always been aware of this fact, it was actually a Fulani person who caused me to develop a heightened consciousness of it. In a lengthy phone conversation last weekend, a cosmopolitan Nigerian of Fulani ethnicity shared with me his deep worries about the deepening animus toward the Fulani all over Nigeria.

In his 1983 pamphlet titled The Trouble with Nigeria, Chinua Achebe talked of “the national resentment of the Igbo.” If Achebe were alive, he would probably agree that the Fulani have displaced the Igbo from this position. In most parts of Nigeria today, the Fulani are feared, resented, reviled, and avoided like never before.

To be sure, inter-ethnic relations have always been intensely conflictual right from Nigeria’s founding, and fear of “Fulani domination” is an enduring anxiety in both the South and in the Christian North. But the sort of mass resentment of the Fulani that has enveloped the country in the last few years since Buhari has been “president” has no precedent.

My Fulani interlocutor attributed this to Buhari’s unprecedentedly explicit favoritism toward the Fulani even when, as he said, “the favoritism does nothing to advance the living conditions of the average Fulani person.” Bloody farmer/herder clashes aren’t new, but they took a different dimension when Buhari appointed himself as the chief defender of and spokesperson for Fulani herders where studied neutrality from him would have been helpful. Justice Nicholas Oweibo of the Federal High Court in Lagos has ordered the forfeiture of 2,149 pieces of jewellery and a customized gold iPhone, valued at $40m, belonging to a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke.

The judge ordered that the items should be temporarily forfeited to the Federal Government.

The forfeiture order followed an ex parte application moved on Friday morning by a lawyer for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mr. Rotimi Oyedepo.

The application, titled action in rem, had Diezani as the only defendant and it was filed pursuant to Section 17 of the Advance Fee Fraud and other related Offences Act No. 14, 2006.

The EFCC said in the application that it found and recovered the jewellery and the customized gold iPhone "on the premises of the respondent," adding that it reasonably suspected that the former minister acquired them with "proceeds of unlawful activities."

According to the schedule attached to the application, the jewellery, categorized into 33 sets, include "419 expensive bangles; 315 expensive rings; 304 expensive earrings; 267 expensive necklaces; 189 expensive wristwatches; 174 expensive necklaces and earrings; 78 expensive bracelets; 77 expensive brooches; and 74 expensive pendants."

The EFCC said, "The respondent's known and provable lawful income is far less than the properties sought to be forfeited to the Federal Government of Nigeria."

Following submission by the EFCC lawyer, Oyedepo, Justice Oweibo ordered that the 2,149 pieces of jewellery and the customized gold iPhone should be temporarily forfeited to the Federal Government.

The judge ordered the anti-graft agency to publish the forfeiture order in a national newspaper "for the respondent or anyone who is interested in the property sought to be forfeited to appear before this honourable court to show cause within 14 days why a final forfeiture order of the said properties should not be made in favour of the Federal Government of Nigeria."

The judge adjourned until August 23, 2019, for further proceedings.

The FCT Police Command has detained Senator Elisha Abbo for allegedly assaulting a nursing mother at an adult toy shop in Abuja.

In a telephone interview, the FCT Police Commissioner, Mr Bala Ciroma, confirmed to Channels Television that the Senator is being detained to enable detectives complete investigation on the alleged assault.

Abbo who represents Adamawa North Senatorial District was spotted in an adult toy shop in a video exclusively released by Premium Times on Monday.

He was seen hitting a woman after she pleaded with him not to physically assault the shop owner whom he accused of insulting him.

The viral video immediately sparked outrage with many Nigerians calling for his prosecution and urging the Senate to also discipline him
