Zamfara State Governor, Mohammed Bello Matawalle, on Sunday, said northern leaders are responsible for the insecurity ravaging the region. Matawalle made the observation while delivering a paper titled “The Fight Against Banditry in Northwest Nigeria: Challenges and Solutions” at the inauguration of the new executives of the Arewa Media Writers Association in Kaduna. Kannywood: ‘I’m not the first divorcee’, Ex-Sani Danja’s wife replies critics Kano road accident claimed 18 lives – FRSC He said the northern leaders were responsible for the plight of their region, which includes horrible crimes like rape, killings of women and children, kidnapping, highway robbery and other gruesome atrocities in the northern region. According to him, the north lacked responsible leadership to steer it through the uncharted waters, adding that the ruling elites have no vision for the region beyond gaining political power. The governor said when he took over as governor on May 29th, 2019, the State had already been mired in a serious security crisis for over a decade, marked by banditry, livestock rustling, kidnapping among other crimes. He said the State was in the news for bloodletting, fire, pillage, and significant displacement of people, particularly those living in rural areas, on daily basis. Matawalle, represented by the State’s Commissioner for Information, Alhaji Ibrahim Magaji, said the historic, economic, social and cultural ties between the dominant communities of Fulani and Hausa were ruptured; farming activities across the State halted, and commercial activities crippled. He said: “With poverty on the increase and food security seriously affected by the crisis, the State was on the verge of a catastrophic social eruption capable of destabilizing our communities and the northwest sub-region. “Shinkafi and Zurmi LGAs are the hot spots of banditry even though there are no mining activities going there. “Rural banditry in Zamfara and other parts of the north, in my opinion, is a result of the progressive degradation of our moral standards and a culture of greed fed by an unfettered need for material goods. “As shown in this presentation, the culture of cattle raiding by pastoralist groups is not something new. It was practised in the days gone by to demonstrate courage and bravery, and no violence was used.” He said the major challenges to peace efforts in the region included reluctance by the affected states to embrace peace dialogue, which would have deprived the recalcitrant bandits currently tormenting the people of safe corridors across the region. Lack of support He lamented that there was a lack of support from a section of politicians who wish to take advantage of the situation to achieve political gains, noting that there was a need for the federal government to key into the peace initiative so that appropriate resources can be allocated to achieve that. He added, “We have all seen how the elites in the South-East and Southwest responded in unison to all matters concerning their regions’ development. “We have seen how they have a defined agenda and are relentless in their pursuit of regional development.” According to him, the war against banditry in the North West would remain a significant security challenge that has the potential to swallow the region and the country. He appealed to leaders of the region to wake up from their lethargy and unite in combating the grave challenge, saying there was the need to stop politicising the situation https://dailytrust.com/northern-leaders-responsible-for-insecurity-in-north-matawalle |

President Muhammadu Buhari Friday in Daura, Katsina State, urged businessmen, contractors and other privileged Nigerians who are beneficiaries of government patronage to always engage in Corporate Social Responsibility, instead of seeking to favor individuals with gifts. President Buhari, who visited the Emir of Daura, Dr Umar Faruk Umar, at his Palace, said pointedly, "I don't want tour cheque. Go and assist our communities" instead of trying to return kickbacks to public officers, including his office. "We don't want cheques from anyone or organisation as returns or influence of any kind. Let them remember their Corporate Social Responsibilities," he said. The President noted that he would love to visit Daura more frequently, but for the high cost of presidential movements and exposing security personnel to the weather, assuring that his heart remains with the people. "We are known for farming and I have my farm here. I could come every two weeks and no one can stop me. But the cost to the movement is high. I would rather that it be used to better our schools, clinics and hospitals," said the President. The President said the grace of God had kept Nigeria together as a country in spite of differences that led to a 30 months civil war "We want to thank God always for keeping us together as a country. From January 15, 1966, the country was thrown into political crisis. We had a 30 months civil war that resulted in the loss of about a million lives. "We still thank God for keeping us together. We remain grateful to all those who showed interest in our unity and progress. May God continue to bless them," he added. The President, who recalled fond memories of visiting the Palace as a military Head of State, expressed happiness that the warmth and hospitality of the traditional institution had been sustained over the years. In his remarks, the Emir of Daura, thanked the President for always creating time to visit his hometown and the palace despite the tight schedule. "Your visit to Daura reflects your good character which we are very proud of. I can assure you that men, women, children, marketers and artisans are always pleased to receive you and they will be praying for you. "Today is not for speeches but for appreciation. We have been blessed so much as a community because you are the leader of the country. You have brought honour to our domain. ''As a community, we have benefited a lot with increased traffic of people and organisations coming to help us here. We know it’s because of you. "May the good Lord always go before you and behind you, and remove all obstacles from your path," he added. The Emir said the President must remain focused in getting results particularly in securing the country. "Nigeria is lucky to have you at this time. I am not saying it to please you, but if you had not been in power it would have been very difficult. I doubt if we will be here today," he added. At the meeting, the Emir publicly announced conferment of the title of Talban Daura on Yusuf Buhari, son of President Buhari. He said a date would be announced for the turbaning ceremony of the President's son, which might likely be before his marriage. The Emir also announced creation of a District in the community of the President, with headquarters in Dimurkol. He said the turbaning of young Buhari and creation of the District was to further extend and deepen the long relationship between the Palace and the family. He said the decision was in agreement with the kingmakers in Daura Emirate Council. During the visit, the Palace used the opportunity to clarify the difference between two titles, Talban Hausa, given to Alpha Conde, the President of Guinea and Talban Daura designated for Yusuf, the President’s son. The Palace explained that Daura, as the linchpin of the Hausa society had conferred titles that have bearing on the Hausa Kingdom and those that are specific to the Emirate https://www.newsproofs.com/2021/07/contractors-stun-as-buhari-rejects.html?m=1 |

PRESIDENT BUHARI DEMANDS CRUSHING RESPONSE AGAINST BANDITS President Muhammadu Buhari Saturday condemned repeated bandit killings in Zamfara and Kaduna States, urging the nation’s military to respond to the worrying situation in a language that the bandits understand. The President notes that the military and other security agencies are now working on new methods and policies that are yielding good results in many of the troubled parts of the country and calls for a crushing response to the killing of innocent citizens in the rural communities. He also avers that the nation, its military and the entire population needs to summon the courage required to defeat the bandits and terrorists. President Buhari condemns some politicians making utterances on security, merely seeking applause, advising them to join the ongoing genuine efforts aimed at finding lasting solutions to the challenges confronting the nation. He expresses the nation’s sorrow over the loss of lives, urging security agencies to do everything possible to prevent the recurrence of attacks with impunity. A rare picture of a pair of shoes worn by bandits. The shoes are made with cow hooves for soles so that when security agents are trying to trace them, they will think it's a herd of cattle that passed. Bandit shoes designed like cow footprints to confuse trackers trailing them.

Abuja Court passes judgment on Kemi Adeosun’s NYSC certificate A Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday said that the former Finance Minister, Mrs Kemi Adeosun did not need the National Youth Service Scheme (NYSC) discharge certificate to take up any ministerial appointment or before standing for any elective office in the country. The court held that Adeosun who graduated in a London University in 1989 was already 36 years of age, therefore, exempted from participating in the NYSC scheme. Delivering judgment in a suit, Justice Taiwo Oladipupo Taiwo, held that Adeosun from available facts was a United Kingdom citizen having been born in the UK in 1967 and remained there till 2003 when she came back to Nigeria. Justice Taiwo held that Adeosun became a Nigerian citizen by virtue of the 1999 Constitution which came into force on May 29 of the year, therefore, the NYSC Act will have no effect on her. The judge said that Adeosun would have committed a grave crime against Nigeria if she had participated in the NYSC having attained the exemption age of 36 years. |
