What if my motivations are business and investment purposes and peaceful settlement of my family. I want both. The kinda of industry I work in is here in Lagos. And I also want a nice settlement for my family. What would you advise in this case sir?
Then u need somewhere not too far from Lagos.. If it's Ogun state not more than 5mins from a major road... Eg Mowe / Ibafo axis if your site is not more than 5mins drive from Lagos Ibadan express...

Thank you for your submission.

Seems your dad and I have something in common. I hate to pay rent ehn...espcially in a state like Lagos.

I don't really care about the transportation cost but the stress I'd have to sustain everyday. The traffic on that Lagos-Abeokuta expressway can be something else. Going to work might not be in problem if one wakes up early, but coming back is really hectic. One could spend up to 3 hours on that road.

It won't be easy coming from ogun to lag everyday. Your dad shuttles between VI and Ota? Are you kidding me? How's your dad able to do this? The stress, the traffic et al.
I'd love to know cos this has been my greatest fear.
one can never go wrong with building his own apartment - I always advice my frineds to eliminate paying rent first and you've solved a lot of problem.

for now @ColonelDrake get a good, easily accessible land and start building..... I'm an architect and with the present hike in material etc the earlier the better.

You wont be completing your house in 1year, would take a while maybe 2 - so u have enough time to re-strategise.

Op nice as your writeup is I think it doesn't get the necessary contribution & reaction its meant to get. This is so because your writeup did not accomodate young graduates out there who just came out from school and other low & mid income earners who need such good advice too. Your writing in staged more like its for those well to do folks out there or those that consider themselves so, and considering that there are many young people on nairaland who are just early starters a writeup of this nature ought to have been written with all class of people in view if you are going to truly help them with your post. My humble opinion though.
You spoke well, would research on one for those struggling to build or save money for building.. Thanks. I like your opinion.

@ saydfact,

In terms of location, I'm looking at building a house in Ogun state. Although, I work in Lagos, but I believe I'll get more value for my money in Ogun state compared to Lagos. A plot of land in a typical Lagos mainland is hovering around 20 million. With this same amount, I can build a super structure in Ogun state.

Must the location where one choose to build a house have to be in proximity to where one works?

Please advise. Thanks
Building a house is planning for the future, pick a location easily accessible in Ogun state.. Remember, Ogun cld be as close as 1km to Lagos.

By the time your house is completed, u cld be working with ease or more flexible with time.

Don't go too remote, pick a location pple are already building too.

Thanks

I expect anybody that build house in Ogun state to have alternative plan for future o.

u can't be working for a company for the rest of your life

We moved to our house in Ogun state last year May. me and my hubby spend just 5% more in our transport compare to when we were living in a rented apartment in Lagos now.

I worked in Isolo while my hubby works in Ikeja

We paid #250k for apartment in Abule egba area, house maintainance is not added o. no freedom of speech as the house is not belongs to us o. we have to wait till 12pm if we r to take our car out the following morning because their is no parking space and u have to wait for the last person in the night so u can park at his back for your convienncy cos he won't answer u if u call him to come and shift his car while u r going out around 5 am.
It's not advisable to go rent apartment far away, if it's ur house better and part of a comfortable house is making sure u can park at ease before paying. U shd have considered all.

I was just wondering if it makes sense building a house in Ogun while still paying rent in the tune of #700k here in Lagos.
700k is high, but depending on your income level thou. However if u can pay that high then u can afford a decent accommodation built somewhere decent too..

True Life Story:

Bayo has been married to Tope for 3 years now and together they have a little girl. While they were dating Bayo started having stomach problem, the doctors later detected that he had a sickness and had to remove one of his 'balls'. Tope all along was there for him and stood by him. They married 6 months later.

They had a wonderful relationship and family until last week Friday; November 4th Bayo came home late and Tope in an angry tune shorted on him and asked him why he came back late (this was unusual of Tope) so Bayo calmed calmly apologized, ate his meal and went to sleep.

They next morning while he was in a hurry to get to work (Bayo works on Saturdays too), Tope suddenly started acting up and asked him to explain why he came back home the previous day. All effort to calm her down failed, she held him on the tie and said he won't leave the house to anywhere. Out of frustration Bayo forcefully removed her hands and pushed her to the bed. That was it, she shouted more that, that was what she was waiting for. she picked up the phone and called Bayo's dad and suddenly pretended to be crying - shouting that Bayo has beaten her and that was how he has been beating her.

Bayo was shocked, he stayed calm in surprise and watched as she called his mum and sisters, then proceeded to call her family too.

What would you do if you are Bayo?

The next episode would be posted next week, so watch out....

Crime › Is The Police 'my' Friend? My Top 5 Reasons Why They're Not by saydfact(op):
While preparing to write this article I decided to check on-line to see if anybody had written such about the police force; I was in-fact motivated to write on when I discovered that 'The Tribune' in its publication on 30th August, 2016 writing under the title "The Police is Your Friend" wrote "a phrase that was created with the aim of dissipating the fears and misconceptions of the general public about the police force has more or less diminished into a hilarious irony". That was Tribune.

So, is the police MY friend? here are my Top 5 reasons why they are not.

No 5:- My Experience as a Young Boy.
As a young boy leaving with a then public figure and having police escorts allocated to him, I grew up playing with police men - it was fun until this fateful day when one of the sergeants noticed that someone had scripted some jargons on their duty rooster and hand over note; na there wahala come ooh. I was his suspect but well, I didn't commit the 'crime'.
While all attempt to get me to 'confess' and mine attempt to get him to believe I didn't deface their note failed he looked at me and pointed to the NPF logo on his uniform and asked - do u know what this means, off-course; Nigerian Police Force. He said no! It means 'No Police Friend'.

I weak, infact as the little boy wey I be then; I fear.

No 4:- My Experience Back in Bariga.
Hmmmm; this Bariga police worry sha, it was common practice to see police van come into the neighborhood in-fact it was a welcomed development, but how do we explain when police men arrest two friends sitting in front of their parents house at about 8-9pm, because according to them they were opposite sex (a male and female) - is there a law that stops neighbors sitting together in from of their house to kill the heat as a result of PHCN's failure to provide light.

Well, just in-case you're wondering - NO!, it wasn't me but my neighbors.

No 3: My Experience in Okitipupa.
As an Architect and Site Supervisor, I remember once I had to work on a project in Okitikuta, Ondo State. It was one of those small new generation bank branch, we had no choice but stack materials on a portion of the road. On this fateful day, the men of the Nigeria Police Force drove to site, parked in a hurry and started chasing people who suddenly tried to run from the shock. I remained calm thou, they eventually got a number of us to follow them to the station. We were asked to write a statement, and we made it simple. I put a call through to my boss and using his connection with a higher officer, he got us released but not without locking one of my boys in their cell.

The good news is Oga settled boys in cash, saying he preferred to pay us for the uncomfortable state they put us through than settle them. He didn't pay any kobo. Na just one call do am.

No 2:- My Experience as a learner driver.
As a learner driver, I had just got a fairly used BMW from my then boss, and I started learning around my neighborhood - back at Bariga those days, on this fateful day a police van was behind me and as a learner driving a manual gear meant the car with off on you occasionally - The police van suddenly pulled me over and alas I was happy to see a police friend (supposed friend to my senior brother) - on seeing me he said ooh na you, greeted and allowed me drive off..... WAIT FOR IT; some minutes later they drove pass me again and pulled up beside me, accused me of tracking them, and queried why my car was always switching off in front of them, I looked at 'My Friend' face; he just 'throwey' eye - NA SO I LAND FOR POLICE STATION OOH; I called my brother that his friend had arrested me but once case don reach that level - You Know Now "NPF" - No Police Friend.

A few thousands were paid to bail me and my car; even when I had a learners permit.

No 1:- SAS comes Visiting.
A day I'll love to forget. This happened in Ado-Ekiti, we were building another branch of a new generation bank and unfortunately our agent had rented a house belonging to a former Motor Park Chairman for us. On this fateful day, we were awoken in the middle of the night by gun and cutlass carrying men (we would later find out they were men of the special anti-robbery squad (SAS)). The story was they came looking for the former park chairman who had threatened the new park chairman, on getting to his flat and he not being around, they checked his tenants apartment (our apartment) and finding so much guys in the house, we became suspects.
This one is a long story, a story for another day but as the leader of the team, I and our company driver were taken away. I was released early the next morning to discover that I have to walk bare foot back home because they didn't allow me wear any footwear the previous night and it was too early for shops to open so I could buy any.

So let me ask you again, IS THE POLICE MY FRIEND?

In recent years, the office of the first lady has not been without some comedy, drama and jaw breaking events / revelation; in this article we look at Five (5) times events took a ugly turn. On such occasion however, Nigerians didn't 'carry last' as we were quick to jump on the situation and make a good laugh out of them. Afterall; we cannot come and go and kill myself.

Sit-back, relax and enjoy our list starting from the least to the most embarrassing.

No 5:- Aisha Buhari (People are dictating to my husband)

Well, while the statement above is not the actual words of Mrs Aisha Buhari, in an interview with BBC Hausa when asked 'Do you think there are some people that are dictating to the President (Buhari) things to do...' she replied with 'That is what I'm saying' - the issues were further complicated when press men in Germany seized the opportunity to ask the President what his comments are on the interview granted by his wife, the rest like they say is history.
While public opinion varies on if and if not it is a national embarrassment, the fact that things were not handled properly still remains.

No 4:- Stella Obasanjo (Corrupt dealings)

The late first lady known for her colourful and expensive lifestyle, a lifestyle which would later see her die during a tummy tuck and was accused during her time at Aso-Rock to have been involved in corrupt dealings in the contract for the African Games, illegal sale of luxurious government properties among others. RIP

No 3:- Patience Jonathan (Weeps on National TV)

While it is not an embarrasement to have public officers cry on national TV, especially when so many innocent life are involved - the drama surrounding this particular one, makes it an issue to consider and it makes our top3. The first lady while drilling principals of the Chibok school were 234 girls had been abducted by Boko Haram fighters repeated said “There is God o… There is God oo,” and weeped. The video would later go viral on you-tube and top video channels.

No 2:- Patience Jonathan (Buhari is Brain-dead)

This particular statement form Mrs Jonathan got everyone talking, even Abike Dabiri-Erewa labelled the then first lady (Patience) as an embarrassment to Nigerians and crowned it with a statement saying 'Mrs Jonathan is the worst First Lady Nigeria has ever had'.
This event occurred while the present president (PMB) was still an APC presidential candidate and flag bearer in an election which saw Patience and her husband leave the seat of power; Aso Rock.

No 1:- Turai Yar'Adua (Takes Over Reigns of Power)

From sneaking her husband, the then President (Yar'Adua) into the country late into the night, to rumored to have over-tuned the decision of the National Assembly to name Jonathan as the Acting President; this particular event has all the ingredients to be named our No 1 most embarrassing moment (from a first lady) in the history of the office of the first lady.
