The importance of AWA and Speaking score are exaggerated when one compares how large the composites are to them. BTW what's your major and did you reapply to the same schools? |

I interned with a company affiliated with our national oil company and I won't call the experience exactly research but I somehow made it look like that experience led to my final year research project. In actual fact, this is true but you get the point. As long as he could relate how that experience in Power Systems engineering showed him something about your ability to survive graduate work, you are good to go. |

Thanks to everyone who kept asking and showing concern. My TOEFL was released today. (R 29 L 29 S 26 W 28) composite: 112 Nothing earth-shattering. The highlight of my score is my speaking of 26 (which I didn't expect as I had informed the house earlier that I barely ever finished explaining myself when the time elapsed. One other time I meant to say 'dilemma' (someone was stuck between choices) and I ended up saying 'debacle'. Quickly changed it to predicament which is a good synonym for dilemma. I felt it would come-out imprecise to whoever was scoring me sha but it is whatever. Lowlight will be the writing joor. I expected a full 30 as I constantly compared myself to the Indians and Russians online that got 115-118 with perfect Writing scores. I want to accuse ETS of malfeasance and demographic bias in scoring but I don't have empirical evidence.  I know this is a GRE thread but if anyone is preparing for TOEFL especially the speaking aspect do not panic if you are talking and you see the seconds ticking away. The evidence shows that one's overall score is not affected by this. Do not also panic if you finish talking way before the time. I don't think it hurts one's overall score as well. Try to pronounce your words slowly (many don't know this but Nigerians are accused of talking too fast). Cheers. 14 Likes |

Time2Smile:You be Oliver Twist. LOL. As a matter of fact anyone who is a lecturer either within or without your department can play a role. His letter just has to explain the capacity in which he is recommending you as that could go a long way in determining the veracity of his claims. It is not necessary that he must have lectured you. He could be someone who even claims he only read your work or referred to it in some other work he was doing. That way, he is indirectly guaranteeing that you would be a good fit to the grad school you are applying to and that's what they really care about. As another matter of fact, I noticed they ask the referees to ascertain one's motivation for research, ability to communicate in English, bent for teaching, discipline and teamwork mentality even above one's class rank or intelligence when compared to other students the lecturer had worked with. Like I said in some previous post, most grad schools are realizing graduate work is beyond having great grades or stellar standardized test scores. Can you contribute meaningfully to an extensive body of work? Can you add something new? That's a rhetorical question Or one that referee should be able to answer. Congrats on the AWA. OGreene:It is funny how humble you were when you needed help to how entitled you now sound. My only pain is that your ungratefulness might ruin someone else's chance who was more deserving. The other day, someone on this thread considered rewriting because she had 298. I supported that move but someone else recommended she could still use the score (based on her profile) and he offered to recommend schools to her. That score is not stellar but she was willing to share it and now she may have gained information that she would not have had, had she kept it close to the chest. What I can perceive from your disposition is that you already feel you won't need the house again so 'to hell' with what we have to say. Don't worry. Life has a way of bringing people like you who posted copiously on this thread asking for tips only to be wise enough to tell us what what decisions he has to make and the ones he is willing to let others make for him. BTW, I have no grouse with you or with those people that did not post because there is a way this story typically ends. Either they get stuck at some point and need specific help so they come back here to ask for it (and in such situations they would be coerced to still give that dreaded report) or they go on to achieve whatever dreams they set before them and in that case we still lose nothing. It only makes sense that as the ox is threshing the floor it should not be muzzled while at it. (Let the thread that has helped you gain from your experience so to speak). PS:notice that 95% of the active posters here are people that are already satisfied with their scores or better still, are already in competitive grad programs. So when we ask for the report (not necessarily the score) we are doing so for the benefit of others not for ourselves. 7 Likes 1 Share |

OGreene:There is a reason this thread was started and to that end, why we come here to report scores and share tips. May be you think it is to gloat or appear scholarly but you'd be sorely mistaken. People generally report scores so that others could among other things: 1. Learn what they did to achieve such scores 2. Help evaluate the profiles 3. Recommend schools, tips, scholarships etc. You have seen others give reports on their GRE experiences and in doing so, thank certain people. It is beyond establishing contacts away from NL. I am almost certain people did that because of the information they gained from such people that aided their preparations and eventual success(es). Consequently, I am disappointed that you who at various points sought and gained tidbits here that must have helped you attain your score decided to keep mum with the report you owe the house. Perhaps, you may think your account would make no difference but you should also take note, that everyone's experience and preparation would not be exactly alike. Afterall, we have seen people who got a composite of 310 and yet their experiences were completely different. 11 Likes |

@OGreene, 1. Is C you are right. 2. If you substitute K=1 for a1, K=2 for a2 etc you'd notice a pattern. a1 is 1-1/2, a2 is 1/2-1/3, a3 is 1/3-1/4, a4 is 1/4-1/5 Without wasting much time if you add a1+a2+a3+a4 you'd notice that you'd have 1-1/2+1/2-1/3+1/3-1/4+1/4-1/5...which shows that 1/2, 1/3 and 1/4 can cancel out leaving 1-1/5 as the answer. Thus, we have identified a pattern we can use for a1+a2.....a100 We would simply find out what a100 is and take the last term of it. That is, since a100 is 1/100-1/101 we can simply remove the 1/100 (knowing it would have cancelled out when adding all the terms). So we are left with 1-1/101 which is 101/101-1/101 which is 100/101 NB: This is a question of high difficulty therefore one is advised to skip it and come back to it if time remains as it could waste your time if you don't figure out the pattern early enough. 3. Since the square has a perimeter of 40 it means 2(X+X)=40 therefore X is 10. Which means one side of the square is 10. Now the second square T is inscribed inside S so the 4 points of T must touch the edges of S. I hope you can imagine what I am trying to say. Anyways this means that the diagonal of T will be equal to the length of one of the sides of S which is 10. Now we know that since the diagonal of the square T is 10, each side will be 5root2. Therefore the area will be 5root2 squared which is 50. So that answer is 50. I hope you understand. 1 Like |

seeker88:It won't raise any red flags but since the Grad Coordinator doubles as the Professor you are in talks with then the email can go directly to him only. HappyDay makes a good point about enthusiasm but the point is he has to understand why sending the official transcript that way makes zero financial sense. OluDare01 made another salient point about time constraints in sending the documents. You can use that as a second reason why the Notarized copy is a better idea. I am almost 90% sure they would honor your idea as I got it from friend who consulted a grad coordinator of a private school in Florida. As for funding opportunities in the school- If I am to call a spade a spade (and not a big spoon) I do not think the school in question will provide you the funding you seek. Their indifference to LORs, SOPs for instance gives off that vibe. I hope I am wrong though. |

@Seeker88 Write an email and blind copy the Grad coordinator, the International students graduate admissions office while the main copy goes to the email of the college of engineering that has been corresponding with you. State unequivocally that it costs you at least $200 to send your transcript to each school that you are considering and that it makes no financial sense to do so considering you are uncertain about getting admitted (they need to see the cost implication of their proposition in a currency they understand ). Let them understand that you would be more than willing to pay that amount if admitted as you know it is important to enrolling in the school when the time comes and that instead you are proposing to send them a notarized copy of the certificate (or statement of result) and the transcript. Most schools accept notarized copies for review (afterall it certifies that an original exists). I did this to one of the schools I was applying to and they accepted it. At the end of the day, you can use express mail services like DHL etc to send it or NIPOST. 9 Likes |

Ndawe:Real dilemma. But I have to be blunt and ask you to look for the nearest GRE date to register. At this point, I think you should be prepared to put your speed-reading skills to work as that may be the quickest way to read through the RC passages and come up with quick answers in so short a time. As for the Q, always skip questions that you would not able to solve in 40 seconds. If you can be sure of atleast 13 answers in both sections (while guessing the others) you stand a very good chance of hitting the mid 150s in both sections. I am saying all these because I think you need a minimum GRE score of 300 which is not the case at the moment. To avoid stories that touch please rewrite it. If it is possible to get a date 3 or 4 days away...jump at it. If you are relaxed you would easily hit 300+ even without much effort. 1 Like |

Ndawe:Hi, Except you are not happy with your score I think the rewrite will be unnecessary. You have a good profile and I am sure you can "package" it well enough to convince a school to admit you. Besides, I don't think you have that much time on your side as applications for fall end in earnest in February for those looking for funding opportunities. Even though, most schools fully fund their PhD students, early submission is another advantage that could help an application (even one that otherwise would have been less competitive). So I guess the real question is, how good was your first GRE? |

Otherwise, you may need to pay $205 at any rate your bank charges you at via PayPal. Perhaps apart from Ebdib (deactivated account), EssayHelp, Hirschfelder, Time2Smile and to some degree Topiipii no other person on this thread can help you get 330 (as most of us did not hit that ). Be that as it may you could learn a lot by just reading the first page of the thread and posts of the afore-mentioned GRE-pulverizers.Alternately, you could check platforms like quora.com and the likes to see how many Indians hit such scores and learn from them. Take note however, that the endpoint to this is gaining graduate admission to particular schools with as much funding as one needs. Which invariably means that you should be prepared to present a robust application with a lot of (prayers, luck, grace) or any other word that could cover up for serendipity, as getting the funding could swing either ways. This post was done in a bid to elicit subtle amusement. Do not take it too seriously. |

ifeoluwadayofun:A little research on your path would have helped. Yes such programs do require at least GRE or MCAT (for health related courses) while some education courses ask for GRE. If you were in doubt you should have checked the admission requirements for some of the schools you are considering. It is always written there. |

seeker88:Thank you very much man and AMEN. It was exactly 2 months on the 5th of January and when I called ETS they didn't appear any closer to resolving the issue. I volunteered to rewrite and the representative I spoke to offered an explanatory mail I could forward to my prospective schools in lieu. Almost like as if he was discouraging me from rewriting. I don't know what to make of it. I am just hoping and praying I get some feedback before the week runs out. |

tuffpuff:Let me reiterate that 8 months ago I may have egged you on to rewrite but considering what I know now I think it is unnecessary if you are considering fall admission. For one, your Undergrad and graduate GPAs are very competitive. How valuable this is, goes without saying. Second, you have very strong research experience which is the aim of graduate work (even over intelligence or high standardized test scores). Third, your standardized test scores are actually competitive. Don't get sucked in by bloggers and their clamour for 320+ scores. If you feel insecure about it then find a creative way to infuse it into your SOP and explain why. Your GPA(s) already evince that you are a consistently high performer and I doubt test scores (that are way above average BTW can tarnish that). Same goes for your TOEFL @ a composite score of 100. Except the top top Ivies I doubt any other schools had a cut off as high as even 93. Hope your speaking score is above 22 or thereabouts. It helps. 4 Likes |
