Thanks a lot. I'm pretty sure you will get good news pretty soon. It's rolling admissions, so no news is a good sign. Wish you all the best.
The highlighted will really make my day if it favors me.

If I may ask, what schools did you apply to last fall year when you got all "rejects"?

Hello house, I hope we are all doing great. So, I was accepted at KSU for PhD in Chemical Engineering and I would like to share my experience with you all, since we started this journey together and will hopefully all get into great programs at the end!
This is my second application cycle, I was rejected from all the schools I applied to for Fall, 2016. I was disconsolate as you'd imagine. Luckily, I stumbled upon this thread and gained so much information from it. I contacted a very active and helpful member, SirRiddy-he gave me some tips and suggested I re-write the GRE (my previous score was 310), IELTS-8/9.
So, I did and got a better score (332), applied to a wider range of schools and got accepted into one of them. I would like to say, happening upon this thread made all the difference. If one makes use of the information posted here judiciously, great improvements in one's profile would be made.
Soo, thanks to everyone that has contributed to this thread in one way or the other! And special thanks to SirRiddy of course!!!
Congrats fellow Corrosive. I am happy for you. I don go refresh my email now now, but nothing dey there. I think it is a good sign. I believe it is. I want it to be. cry

EducationRe: How To Achieve High Scores On The GRE by Scholastica16: 9:39pm On Feb 22, 2017
A lot of schools will respond latest next week.

Of course, I know some others like UofH will respond in April but we need to brace ourselves.

Where is Adetola007? Did you get into LSU's Chemical Engineering program? Na me and you apply for that program o. You have remained radio-silent.

This held me back from applying to some schools, aside my GRE score which isn't 170/170-Q. I believe other parts of my application were competitive enough for most Msc programs.

But how them wan know say you deh try for other aspects, if your app cannot get in through the door because of GRE requirement? undecided
See ehn, one cannot really know what they look for.
EducationRe: How To Achieve High Scores On The GRE by Scholastica16: 4:35pm On Feb 20, 2017
hirschfelder:
Lol. Not so shocking though, considering that some programs use GRE mainly to screen applications. Thereafter, research experience and research fit as highlighted in your SOP carries more weight (as I've been told). I hope other schools consider our applications favorably.

Yes. PhD in Chemical Engineering
Wow. So you are a fellow corrosive?

Need I say more? Your GRE was a stunner. I know your first degree was PRESSID-worthy. Our lack of research experience is the only issue in Nigeria. We do close to no research. Anyways, I have no doubt that you would get into a top school fully-funded. I think your 'rejection' was designed by God to console me. grin

fredoricko:
You're correct bro. I asked grad coordinator same question and most of them encouraged me to apply for a straight PhD only if I've got a faculty member who has agreed to be be adviser. But I guess is a case of different strokes for different schools.
Depends on the schools though but I get your point. A friend of mine in 2015 emailed Professors in Vanderbilt, VirginiaTech, Carnegie Mellon, UIUC, MTU and TTU. At the end of the day, only the latter 2 gave him admits with TTU offering him funding after much begging.

To get free money from USA no easy as we think.

ponpon:
just saw it now, bro it's just one of the decisions, and If you are still applying. Trying and ask the grad coord if the dept prefers a straight PhD or Ms first. I almost applied to LSU PhD until I asked and the grad coord told me that faculty prefers a Ms first and that I should mail to see if anyone was ready to accept me. Even though on the site you could apply to PhD straight. I just used my number 6.

Even the Ms admit sef, no funding yet.
Thanks man. You know, I considered almost everything you have said. But the Grad coordinator told me Master's is self-funded and that I should apply directly for the PhD. I asked her if I needed to email any Professor to act as an adviser and she said no but that I should mention his name in my SOP and that it would be relayed to him.

In the course of my research I noticed CuteMorgan got into their Chemistry doctorate program directly and I didn't hear him talk about emailing any Professors so I felt I was in order. His admit and funding emails trooped in back to back as well so I believed they didn't sell me a false word. He did graduate with a 4.55/5 and I didn't however.

I guess they would give a couple Chincos with 169-Q 145-V 2.5-AWA the admit. Nothing spoil. Finally na just 1 admit pesin need sef. Getting all admits is just for self-aggrandizement. grin

See the highlighted part? I dread it more than Jamaican hair especially as the dollar is expected to rise to 650N before the year runs out.

He is somewhere, waiting nervously. Lol. I got rejected from Notre Dame so far. Waiting on others. Getting quite antsy though, since people be posting acceptances for my program all over GradCafe! I pray we all get into great programs at the end!!!
I can't believe this matey. And I was there feeling bad. You are a landlord. Them suppose use your application as the benchmark. This is shocking really.

PhD?

As much as no one wants to experience rejection wrt applications, it doesn't define the end bro. This particular rejection only helped you prune your choices. All things work together for good. I believe you'll get accepted by other schools you applied to. In fact, that acceptance mail is coming very soon. Cheer up bro.
Thanks man. I appreciate. I have moved on really. After the first day in fact.

Thanks in no particular order to:

Tescoman90, Andradaeze, jaybiz007, seeker88, towbaynah, sirRiddy, Drhopeful, OGreene, iPledge01, Cephas009, Hirschfelder, Time2Smile, Topiipii.

I saw the mentions but I knew I was going to be busy all through then till now.

The most painful aspect about a rejection apart from the (application fee and every other expenses incurred) is the fact that you may never know why. I guess my only consolation is that I couldn't attend all the schools at the same time had I gotten all admits in each of the schools.

I remain optimistic about my other chances.

Regret mail from LSU. They say they hope the regret will not discourage me from pursuing graduate program in other schools. Congrats to those who got it.

Fret not. Your schools were top notch. I doubt you'd hear from them earlier than February end based on Grad Cafe. I am optimistic about your chances.

I have received four decisions from my applications, they all admitted me without funding yet.

Colorado State University - Jan. 24
Kansas State University - Feb. 7
University of Wyoming - Feb. 10
Tennessee Tech. - Feb. 14

K-State is asking me to send a bank statement though before an admittance can be processed.

I still have two more decisions to go (U of Utah and Vanderbilt)

One admit from South Dakota State University.

Surprisingly, that is the most recent application which I reluctantly submitted few days ago. I completed the application and ordered for my evaluated transcript from WES to the school on 8th of this month. I was utterly surprised when I saw the mail from them was a decision mail. I guess they admit on rolling basis...

However, no funding yet. The advisor assigned to me happen to be the Program Coordinator. I was told to contact my advisor for inquiries on funding which I already did.... his response was that I have been automatically entered to the selection pool for the departmental graduate teaching assistant, and that the positions will be announced at the beginning of the fall semester... undecided lipsrsealed

I pray it comes out well...
This is great news bro. Some schools make funding decisions later so I am guessing you'd still hear from them. Mechanical engineering Masters abi?

Congrats Divabiola. You contributed to the thread in your own special way. I am happy for you.

@DrHopeful, the wait is not easy but I think the consensus online say it is not bad most times if you have not received a decision by now. Let us be keeping our fingers crossed. What about the interview you had with a member of Faculty in one of your schools?
EducationRe: How To Achieve High Scores On The GRE by Scholastica16: 8:52am On Feb 14, 2017
Congrats iCool. I hope all your schools were not Texas-centric sha. People say it raises red flags to the VOs.

I am sorry for your loss or is it Walspring's? Nairaland has an active GRE thread where information such as this can be learned to prevent eventualities- the type you are ruing now. We have had others who made the same mistake in the past and they shared their experiences with us so I am hoping you would find time to not only learn from the thread, but to contribute by sharing your own experience with us- including this painful one. Cheers.
