Please someone should help a friend interpret this GRE score:
[10/01 10:08 am] Dre: Verbal 157/170
[10/01 10:08 am] Dre: Math 160/179
[10/01 10:08 am] Dre: Math 160/170 sorry
[10/01 10:09 am] Dre: Analytical writing 3.5/6

He still keeps saying he failed. I never had to write one
Whoever this is did better than 76% of people who wrote the GRE Maths at the same time and 75% of the people who wrote the verbal at the same time too. I am sure he knows this because he has seen his AWA (which means his percentiles have been sent to him too). His AWA is slightly above average depending on if he is applying for Masters or PhD.

So you be the judge: if someone does cumulatively better than 75.5% of other test-takers. Is that a fail?

You do not have to confuse this person. It's PS or SOP. Nothing like academic statements.
Michigan State University begs to differ.

https://www.egr.msu.edu/academics/graduate/academic-personal-statements-guidelines

Statement of Purpose (that Purpose could be Academic, Personal or both).

If Academic, you would limit your essay to your academic experiences for instance. That you play basketball leisurely or you solve puzzles to counter stress would be extraneous information. All they want to know is, I read X engineering. My project was on Y numerical methods, my GPA was 4.9 etc.

If Personal, you are allowed to tell them how your father suffering a stroke or being an indigent student made you maladapt to the curriculum or environment thus frustrating your quest for a firstclass degree. You may choose to inform them how succeeding in graduate school is a promise you made your grandmum before she passed on.

Also, some schools ask you to present a statement of purpose but when you look at the guidelines they would have both academic and personal posers. You can look it up.

thanks for the fast response.. i've made my research and found out it's like a new generation school. hardly 50years old(donno if that affects its prowess). i'm interested in a masters degree in biotechnology. i just wanna know how good the school is and if there's anyone studying there because i hardly here of it in the house.
It is one of the better Universities in Florida I think it is rated 2nd behind UofF. Knowing if anyone is studying there depends on where you are checking and if anyone had divulged that information or was willing to. People generally apply to schools for different purposes. I would not have applied to UCF because they didn't have any chemical engineering program for example. As far as Engineering programs go, they are rated higher than some of the more popular universities on NL like K-State but I don't know much about funding there except you check msinus.com for more information.

Overall, it is a good school. Do check if they have the Biotechnology you are looking to master as I didn't see it by hurriedly checking now.

please beautiful people, what is the difference between statement of purpose and personal statement
To add to what has already been said: some schools view statements of purpose as encompassing of personal and academic statements while some others expect you to discriminate between the two.

While personal statements may involve personal information including extracurricular activities, personal challenges and internal motivation for wanting graduate study. Academic statements focus more on one's academic history, challenges, achievements and motivation for wanting graduate study.

It's even cheaper to send TOEFL score with d Access bank visa card because it costs just 6,500. For GRE score ordering, Mafit is cheaper.
I swear I didn't know Access had the same provisions GTB did. In my mind I felt I had exhausted the $100 limit and other banks work at 450N/ $ or thereabouts. So I actually thought N8000 for TOEFL by B.Y MAFIT was a bargain. I am regretting now. N64000 just like that! cry

Thanks alot.Am actually applying for PhD that actual made me to consider fall 2018,as most schools admit and give funding for PhD for just fall. Its obvious fall admission for 2017 is closed already.Any advice?
Most fall applications for this year are gone. Especially if you want to write GRE in March. If you apply then and still get the admisssion, chances are, you may not get funding as most of it may have been disbursed to the early bird applicants. So my advice: wait for fall next year as planned just get everything you need ready and make your applications by Oct 2017. You would be early enough for any school's deadline and you'd have all the documents ready too.

please house, for someone that is just about to write GRE in march and wish to apply for fall 2018, can one still send score to schools on the test day or is it best to wait till when schools start receiving applications.Pls help out
Email the grad coordinators of the schools you are considering and ask them how long they keep official score reports before discarding it. Some keep it for 1 full year and some others even longer. Tell them you are considering writing in March but against Next year fall that's why you are asking. I think it falls in place if you are considering fall next year as most fall apps end in January which won't be up to a year from March of this year so it may be better to send the scores now (as per in the venue) than wait and pay $27 each time you want to send it next year.

the full length tests are they the same as the questions in Manhattan prep? Please where can I get them? I'll appreciate your assistance
Yes I believe Manhattan had good Full-length tests even though I didn't use them (but the one I am referring to is not the one contained in the book but a real time simulation of the way the GRE test will be- having a timer, instructions, Essays, and both Q and V questions). I also know some people on here used Kaomanfen.com but I also do not know how they gained access to it. Perhaps just type it that way on your browser and see where it leads you. I did however, use the Kaplan test samples and you should read the posts by Seeker88 on this page to understand how to access them. Here is the link:

https://www.nairaland.com/1832477/how-achieve-high-scores-gre/141

The best full length test possible is the PowerPrep II and if you have not used it better for you as it should never be wasted since you are given only 2 full length tests. They mirror the real GRE experience better than any other tests. I would recommend you took one of the tests midway into your practice and the 2nd one 2 days before your actual test. You can download it from ETS.org for free and it works without internet connection (provided you have launched it with your internet). It is also about 28MB so it doesn't take much of your data.

Be careful, don't register with agents. Okay fine, BY Mafit is legit.
You are preaching to the choir. The emboldened is where the post should have ended because that was why I lent my voice. The challenge with speaking on behalf of people is that you might unsuspectingly rehash their errors even if you had good intentions. Take a look at this excerpt:

I am not saying otherwise. I am only advising people to becareful that's all. I remember some folks back then registered through this same means and they got their result cancelled after 6 months or so.
This post was made because Lagosismyhome, Hushee and Omoluabi had recommended the company. I realized the highlighted phrase would drive fear into people so I volunteered to help allay such fears by corroborating the company's legitimacy. C'est fini. If it so happens that someone's gaffe was being corrected while at it we just have to call it...accidental discharge or occupational hazard.

Telling us that some people have fallen victim to charlatans while good, is pleonastic in this context. People have fallen victim to counterfeit money too but it doesn't stop us from telling them a real exists. That's what I did.

We have derailed this thread enough.

Peace.

I am sure I had posted such information here. They send both GRE and TOEFL scores at the same price. N8000.

I wouldn't advice anyone to send scores at such high rate. I sent all my scores via BY Mafit at 8k per school, and with access bank visa card, it's 8,775NGN.
Make we dey cut cost oo.... grin grin
OGreene:
One can equally send scores with BY MAFIT. Its N8,000

Or use a GTB /Access card on ETS website, $27 @325 it will be N8,775.
I am showing people the alternative but neurotic pseudo-heros (on some other thread) will say I am an agent.

It was an open advice.

Defensive? take some steps back and see how you've been singing praises of B.Y MAFIT like you get discounts or coupons from them.
I can ask you to bring any post showing me "singing praises" of said company but it would be a 'fool's errand'. Except of course, informing people about N50K GRE as against N100K+ is seen as "singing praises".

One, I don't know about Walspring or his GRE discount. Infact, it is not my business. I have it as my own personal opinion to advice people to becareful of who they patronize for GRE registration. I don't think I am out of place to do that or is there more than meet the eyes?

House, please becareful of the firm you patronize for GRE registration.
Actually, you are the who appears to be worked-up and even defensive. Not everyone will be another hero/heroine like MsNas. That's the thought that should be settled.

With that out of the way, you would realize that someone else (actually 2 others) recommended this but some people including you, expressed doubts. I came here to allay such doubts.

PS: Calling someone's comprehensive rejoinder an "epistle" is uncalled for. But you would soon say you were returning the favor. A favor, nobody granted you, at least, not me.

I have applied to a couple of schools without GRE well apparently they do not need it for MENG

But my friends said i have to take a standardized exam for easy VISA access should i get the admisssion.

pls should i go for IELTS or GRE?

I am also processing some Admission for Canada.. which dont need either..

Please kindly advise
If you wanted to "hoodwink" the VO during the visa interview GRE would be better. But even in that case, try not to score very low. Of course, you could always still say it was waived even if you wrote it, but you want them to see you as a serious student.

IELTS is not that popular in the US.

Studying for Gre is so diffficult , I'm currently serving in a construction company, I leave home early and return late , I try my best to study at work when I'm less busy and I make sure to study intensively on weekends. I feel I'm not doing enough, I'm planning to apply in 2018 and I want to score above 320. Can anyone advice me as to how to move forward and do better?
Studying may have little impact but early preparation has helped you especially since you are considering 2018. I would recommend you gave yourself 4/5months of less study and more full-length tests i.e both essays and VQVQE as oft as possible. Full-length tests trump any other preparatory methods.

When I was preparing for the GRE I got near perfect scores in my Q (PowerPrep Test 1 169 and one of the Kaplan Tests 170) but that was because I skipped the verbal and did it at a later time. Preparing for the GRE that way won't help you because it would give you a false sense of security seeing that I was full of energy when I tested myself both times. If I had done the Full-length tests I am sure I may have scored lower because I would have been tired by the 2nd Q especially if one ends up getting 3 Qs and not know which one is the experimental.

Practising Full-length tests will enable you test your endurance the same way it would be on the actual day and if you discipline yourself during the practice you won't feel the impact of the grueling 4hr exams on the D-day.

Apart from helping with one's endurance level Full-length tests actually programme you to devise strategies that could help on test day and show you topics that you may not be fully-cognizant of, better than just pouring through various books trying to understand the intricacies. For instance, some people skip the first 8 Q questions that are quantitative comparisons and tackle them last.

Finally, Full-length tests are near perfect indicators of whether you are close to the 320+ target score. Forget Adrenaline, if you are not hitting 320+ during your practice, chances are, you won't hit it on the main day. In fact, one's score could improve or reduce by a margin of 4 on both sides during the main day. Everyone I know that hit say 160+ in the V had done so consistently during practice. Same goes for the Q. Obviously there would be outliers to this theory but the evidence is clear even on this thread. The guy who hit 330 early January said he was getting above 160 in his V throughout his practice and I believe he hit 165 in one of his PowerPrep V's which he replicated on the main day. Same goes for the guy that had 167 in his Q.

Hi guys, I have been following this thread for a while and I must say that I'm impressed with the love and friendship here. Kudos to you all. I need clarification on an issue. If I take the GRE before starting the online application, should I send the scores to my preferred schools at the test centre or should I send scores after starting the online application?
Send at the test centre. The department still knows how to link the official copy with the online application. If you send the scores after the application you'd pay $27 for each score report which is above N14k.

Don't presume. Make the information available to people and let them decide for themselves.
LOL. That is exactly what I did. If Walspring wants to help people pay for GRE at $205 which today is N100K+ and he is asking them to have half of the money so he can give them the other half, it is not a fool-proof idea seeing that they could afford the other company's rate without his help. Someone recommended they used the company so they could bring say N25K for the GRE and Walspring would bring the other half. With this method, he can help more people than the proposed 10. It is economical and actually more politic.

PS: I am active on the GRE thread. That's actually how I got to know about them. I have no horse in this race except to help some people on here who were in doubt about their legitimacy. Even gleaning through the GRE thread, you'd see a handful of people who consulted their services unabated. 2013 to 2016/2017 is enough for a first degree in USA. In otherwords, it is a mighty long time. Cheers.

"Crass ignorance" "Petty" some of the words you used that were not insulting or arrogant?

We would derail the thread.

Lets not get emotional about the information passed. The people that were defrauded with GRE registration were also convinced because the center has offices and claimed they use vouchers from ETS to register. That being said, we are not saying B.Y MAFIT is a fraudulent organization. We are only asking people to be careful of who they patronize when it comes to GRE registration.
When did you write GRE, 2013? I didn't use B.Y MAFIT when I wrote (first time) but I wager more than 80% of the people at my GRE and TOEFL centres used them.

So yea, people should be careful. Careful here meaning do background checks, ask around, ascertain legitimacy of said agency which I presume people are doing here. That's why I lent my voice. Cheers.

Good afternoon everyone, I need your opinions on this issue. I studied Building in the University of Lagos and I'm working towards doing my masters soon in Construction engineering and management which happens to be a specialization in the department of civil engineering. I was opportune to take a wide variety of civil courses during my undergrad including structural analysis, structural design, mechanics of materials, soil mechanics, foundation engineering and fluid mechanics which I had Bs save for fluid mechanics. I want your advice on if I'll be considered for the course despite the fact that my bachelors degree is in Building and not Civil engineering. I'll be so glad if I can get your opinions, it will mean a lot.
I believe you would be but if you are in doubt you should go to the website of the your intended schools and get the email address of the grad coordinator. Contact him/her and ask this question. They would respond.

Thank you very much, Imperial is first choice if funding shows up.
Imperial is highly rated but I don't know if they would offer you an MSc or MEng. That's the first issue because without the former, transitioning into a PhD would be harder in the USA. Secondly, it is mega expensive even with PTDF. I think the tuition is like £26,000 (plus living expenses in London are out of this world). I don't know if PTDF can still fund it with this current exchange rate. Thirdly, life in UK post-schooling and job prospects. I dey see plenty imperial people hustling for "crumbs" in Nigeria. So make rating no too motivate you. A lot of those ratings are heavily dependent on politics, endowment size and quality of past research work. But if you can get it on a full-ride then enjoy.
