Business / The Remarkable Journey Of Access Holdings by PENTALK360(m): 1:21pm On Jun 07
This year marks 22 years since two young Nigerian bankers – Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede and Herbert Wigwe – bought a small, nondescript bank and turned it into one of the biggest financial institutions on the continent with footprint also established in Europe and Asia. It was on March 22, 2002, that the two walked into Plot 1669 Oyin Jolayemi Street, Victoria Island, Lagos, which was then the corporate headquarters of the bank to assume duty and full control as the Managing Director and Deputy Managing Director. The acquisition process had taken about two years and entailed rigorous negotiations, and countless hours of working through documentation. It was one of the most audacious takeovers in the history of the nation’s financial industry. Indeed, the phenomenal growth of the Access Group has become an inspiring success story. Shortly after the takeover, Access Bank embarked on a five-year transformation agenda, and two years into the plan, the CBN announced the N25 billion capitalisation deadline set for end of December 2005. The institution’s management went to work, raising the required capital and developing the impetus to seek opportunities for possible mergers and acquisitions. Recognising the opportunity that existed to build scale, the institution mobilised its workforce and quickly raised N15 billion via a public offer, acquired two other small banks, Capital Bank Ltd. and Marina International Bank Ltd., and convinced FMO, the Netherland development finance company, to become an institutional investor through the conversion of a $15 million term loan it had earlier given to the bank. With the N25 billion capitalisation met and surpassed, the race to the top became a fixed goal to the new owners. They then embarked on aggressive drive to raise money both from local and foreign capital markets. Between 2006 and 2007, Access Bank raised a local bond issue of N11.9 billion and in 2007 it raised N136 billion in public offerings, including a highly successful and oversubscribed GDR (global depository receipt) and established Access Bank UK. In June 2008, the beginning of the second five-year transformation plan, every action was geared at taking the institution to the top. Between 2009 and 2011, the bank passed CBN’s special audit on governance, liquidity and capital adequacy conducted under the tough-talking Sanusi Lamido Sanusi. Three major achievements were also recorded. The bank was awarded IFC Sustainable Bank of the Year; it acquired Intercontinental Bank and was ranked the fourth largest bank in Nigeria as a result of the acquisition.

With these successes, a huge surge of confidence and can-do spirit have by now swept through the entire workforce. Staffers went through a rigorous process of reorientation and change of the bank’s vision and mission; and with business combination with Intercontinental completed in 2012, management staff assumed bigger roles and responsibilities. Access Bank became one of the favourite places to work for bankers from other institutions. The bank was enjoying the pulsating work pace and dynamic work environment, enthralled in seeing the dream of being in the top five becoming a reality year after year.

That same 2012 and spanning 2013, the bank raised $350 million Eurobond in the international market and divested from non-banking subsidiaries. It was also designated as a significant important financial institution by the CBN, one of the very few in the industry. This means a recognition of its huge footprint in the economy, the integrity and respect of its leaders and the fact that the bank could not be allowed to fail under any circumstance. It is for this reason that the CBN recently intervened in the board and management composition of one bank. Another huge milestone came in 2014 when Access Bank issued $400 million subordinated note (tier 2 bond) and transited into a large, diversified banking institution.

In January 2014, Herbert Wigwe assumed duty as the Group Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer, after the retirement of Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede. With enormous goodwill and attractive brand equity, the bank continued to outpace its contemporaries. In 2017, it further shored up its capital by raising N42 billion through rights issue and issued another $300 million subordinated note.

But it was its merger with Diamond Bank in 2018 that catapulted Access Bank to the number one slot in at least some parameters: assets and retail business with 646 branches. It also recorded the biggest channel touchpoints: 38 million cards; 3,000 ATMs and 34,000 POS terminals. In 2019, Access bank issued the first green bond in Nigeria. In 2020, it expanded its African business into Kenya and Mozambique and became the first Nigerian bank to set up shop in South Africa. A few weeks ago, the South African ambassador to Nigeria was on TV commending the bank for establishing a branch in his country. In 2022, Access Bank marked the final year of its previous five-year strategy, which focused on building Africa’s gateway to the world, through the deployment of robust risk management practices, and a flawless execution of its strategic priorities. By all key metrics, the strategy was successfully executed as the bank grew its scale to span over 6,000 dedicated professional staff serving over 52 million customers across 17 markets worldwide.

In the second half of 2022, Access Bank was restructured into a Holding Company – birthing Access Holdings – to realise the potential of the synergies from the various businesses, while expanding product offering to customers in payments, insurance, consumer finance and pensions.

True to plan, Access Holdings, in 2023, launched its operations in Paris, setting the tone for a robust long-term goal across the Northern Hemisphere. The Group has also strategically ventured into new territories, bringing its expertise, resources, and innovative solutions to areas with immense growth potential. These strategic moves exemplify the company’s vision to be a pan-African force, contributing to economic development across borders.

Through its subsidiaries, the institution has played a pivotal role in sectors ranging from finance and banking to agriculture, technology, and healthcare, bringing diverse opportunities to the communities it serves.

In countries where Access Holdings has established a presence, the institution has become a driving force for job creation and entrepreneurship. Access Holdings has sown the seeds of sustainable economic development by supporting Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (SMEs), investing in local businesses, and providing financial solutions tailored to the needs of each market.

The company’s ability to adapt its business model to the unique dynamics of each African market sets it apart, as it recognises that Africa is not a monolithic entity, but a collection of diverse economies with distinct challenges and opportunities.

Through its expansion strategy, the institution tailors its approach to address the specific needs of each region, contributing to a more inclusive and holistic development across the continent. Commencing in the second half of 2024, the Group’s Africa and international expansion strategy will enter the consolidation and efficiency phase, aligning with the institution’s five-year plan to accelerate the attainment of its 2027 strategic object

Business / Anti-corruption Group Petitions EFCC Over Alleged N400B Fraud By Ex-Bank Chair by Itopalucky(m): 12:08pm On Jun 07
A civil society group dedicated to the promotion of democracy and championing anti-corruption causes, Global Integrity Crusade Network (GICN)  has dragged a former Chairman, Board of Directors of Unity Bank Nigeria Plc, Thomas Akoh Etuh before the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for alleged serial financial crimes.

In a petition dated June 4th, 2024 and addressed to the EFCC Chairman, the group drew the attention of the EFCC to a legion of crimes allegedly perpetrated by Mr Etuh while serving as Unity Bank boss a few years ago.

Signed by Edward Omaga, the President of the GICN, the group accused Etuh of insider abuse and fraudulent conversion of depositors’ funds into personal use among other allegations.

The petition titled, “Call for action,” read in part, “We have recently uncovered an avalanche of documents showing that Thomas Akoh Etuh can comfortably be adjudged as “the worst enemy of banking in Nigeria”. He was first appointed as Pioneer Vice Chairman of Unity Bank Plc on 22nd April, 2014 having garnered over two decades experience in the public and private sectors of the economy.
“Before this time, Thomas Akoh Etuh served as a Director in several companies in Nigeria and equally chaired a number of Board Committees in Unity Bank Plc. On 23rd January, 2015 he was appointed as Chairman, the Board of Directors of Unity Bank Plc and confirmed by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). This followed the resignation of the former Chairman, Alhaji Lamis Shehu Dikko who left to pursue his political aspirations.”

For the 33 years he held sway as Chairman, Board of Directors of Unity Bank Plc, GICN alleged that Mr Etuh committed serial infractions so much that he ought to be in prison rather than walking freely on the streets.

“Within the period under review, a previously healthy Unity Bank Pic led by Thomas Akoh Etuh found itself completely hollowed out after giving out hundreds of billions of naira in non- performing loans (NPLs). The Bank was reduced to meticulously cooking its books while secretly operating with negative share capital for the better part of a decade.
“As a way of pretending to solve the bank’s woes, Thomas Akoh Etuh opted to sell its interest under some distressed condition to a younger competitor named Providus Bank Plc, even while he continued to lavish stupendous amounts of money on his personal business interests,” he petition further read.

The group claimed that TAK Continental Limited “Belonging to Thomas Akoh Etuh was listed by the Assets Management Company of Nigeria (AMCON) as owing Unity Bank Plc the sum of N411. 59bn making it the 22nd biggest debtor owing Nigerian bank.
By the time Etuh retired in 2017, the group alleged that about seven companies with links to Etuh accounted for about N27bn out of the Unity Banks non-performing loans of over N400bn.

Etuh according to GICN did not act alone, accusing board members and regulators of conniving with the ex-Unity Bank boss.

“The Banks and Other Financial Institutions Act (BOFIA) 2020 and the CBN’s Prudential Guidelines contain multiple clauses that criminalizes pretty much everything described above. The Prudential Guidelines for example, state that the maximum amount that can be given as a loan to a single borrower or group of related borrowers is 20 per cent of the bank’s shareholder funds.

“Thomas Etuh claimed that Unity Bank’s shareholders’ funds stood at N431bn when he took charge, going up to N480BN by the time he left. Pulling aside the assumption that Unity Bank has, been running with negative shareholders’ funds since 2016, if we are to use his dodgy math, his NPL portfolio of N29Bn grossly exceeds the prudential guidelines both in the case of N31 Billion SHF (93.5 percent) and N80 Billion SHF (36.25 percent),” the group argued.

Anchoring its prayers on the whistle blowing policy of the Federal Government, GICN called on the EFCC to immediately arrest  and prosecute Mr Etuh, stating that “This will go a long way in proving to the overwhelming population of Nigerians that the EFCC is truly committed to tackling the menace of criminality headlong, no matter who is involved.

“We contend that the action of the Lagos State High Court presided over by Justice L.A. Okunnu when he discharged Thomas Akoh Etuh on 21 September, 2021 of complicity in the money laundering charges preferred against Francis Atuche and Ugo Anyanwu is wrong, unacceptable and reprehensible.
“It is impossible for Francis Atuche and Ugo Anyanwu to be convicted while Thomas Akoh Etuh who is regarded as the “father of fraud in the banking sector would remain a free man till date.”
The group also expressed its readiness to appear before the EFCC for purpose of writing statement and presenting more indicting documents capable of substantiating the weighty allegations contained in petition against Mr. Etuh.

It also called on the EFCC to direct the CBN to remove all the Directors of Unity Bank to pave way for a thorough probe of the accounting books to ascertain the depth of shady deals perpetrated during the reign of Etuh.

The petition was copied to the President, CBN Governor, AMCON MD, Director General, National Crime Agency, UK, among others.

Please read the above.
The same Tinubu shouted that GEJ was preventing him from contesting as Buhari’s Vice President in 2014. The Ojota story was predicated on the greed of some people. They all agreed that it was all politics and that subsidy should have gone in 2014, with GEJ.

Tinubu simply played his cards with the northerners, using his religious status and the political bridges that he had systematically built over the years.

The rest is the history that we now witness, with Nigeria compared to Somalia, under the same Tinubu.

Politics / Senator Prince Ned Nwoko 's Accomplishment Speak Louder Than Propaganda by Details0987: 6:25am On Jun 07
Senator Prince Ned Nwoko 's Accomplishment Speak Louder than Propaganda

Point black magazine

Thursday June 6, 2024

By Olorogun Godwin Obire

We have been made aware of a Facebook post by an individual using the name Balogun Wasiu Shanta. This person, who we suspect is the pharaoh of Delta North politics, is attempting to assert his dominance over the Delta North senatorial district as the political leader, which goes against the wishes of the majority of the Anioma people. The post, which is full of false information and sponsored by the pharaoh himself, is titled "HAS DELTA NORTH FELT THE IMPACTS OF Senator Ned Nwoko IN HIS FIRST YEAR AS THE SENATOR REPRESENTING THE GOOD PEOPLE OF DELTA NORTH IN THE RED CHAMBER?" This question is a feeble attempt at spreading misinformation and deception.

By asking such a foolish question, Balogun and the pharaoh of Delta North politics have proven that they are uninformed about the responsibilities of a legislator and ignorant about the effective representation provided by Senator Ned at the national assembly. They are also unaware of the numerous developments that Senator Ned's representation has brought about for the advancement of the Delta North senatorial district and Nigeria as a whole.

Normally, I would not dignify the ignorance, rants, and misleading information of Balogun and the pharaoh with a response. However, as a responsive and responsible senior legislative aide to Senator Ned, who values accountability, I will do so in the interest of the public, specifically the good people of Delta North senatorial district. Perhaps, this is an opportunity for the critics to be educated and liberated from their childishness.

There is no comparison between Senator Prince Ned Nwoko and anyone else in Delta North. No amount of blackmail or propaganda can change this fact. The evidence is there for everyone to see. Senator Ned came prepared to represent Delta North in the National Assembly since he assumed office as Senator in June 2023, He has made his Anioma constituents proud, displaying remarkable competence and charisma while addressing important issues in the red chambers. His impact goes well beyond political rhetoric.

Senator Nwoko has initiated the empowerment of 260 youths and women through a skills acquisition program in Asaba, the capital of Delta and the heartland of Anioma. Each beneficiary received 150,000 Naira, providing them with opportunities for poverty alleviation and wealth creation. He has also provided relief to over one thousand people in the Delta North senatorial district through the direct implementation of the federal government's social welfare program, with each recipient receiving 50,000 Naira.

Senator Ned is one of the most quoted Senators in the 10th National Assembly, leading in the number of motions presented on the floor. His advocacy efforts cover a wide range of issues, including sanctions against crude oil theft, rehabilitation of infrastructure such as the Asaba-Benin road and East-West expressway, gas flaring and compensation, security surveillance against kidnappers, peaceful resolution of conflicts, and the fight against transatlantic slave trade and colonialism.

Other motions and bills moved, submitted, and proposed by Senator Ned Munir Nwoko include:

1. The need to demand reparations for historical injustices and mitigate neocolonialism in Nigeria and African nations.
2. The need for redress, healing, and reconciliation for the grievous 1967 Asaba Massacre.
3. The need to investigate the incessant and nefarious acts of crude oil thefts in the Niger Delta and its actors.
4. The urgent need for African nations to attain veto power at the United Nations Security Council.
5. The need for the establishment of social media platform offices in Nigeria for economic advancement and efficient dispute resolution.
6. The urgent action needed to fortify security and tackle the surge of kidnappings in the FCT, following the tragic abduction of 19 individuals in Galadimawa.
7. The urgent need to stop gas flaring and enforce anti-gas flaring regulations in Ndokwa Land and the Niger Delta Region.
8. The need to upgrade all Federal Medical Centers in Nigeria to international standards and for all public servants to seek medical treatment exclusively within Nigerian healthcare facilities.
9. The compelling need to ban the importation of all non-essential goods and locally producible items in Nigeria.
10. The urgent need for a national dialogue with separatist groups in Nigeria to genuinely and amicably resolve all issues.
11. The need to address the unexplained delay of electricity supply in Ndokwa Land and the step-down of Okpai Independent Power Plant.
12. The urgent need to discourage any military intervention in Niger Republic by ECOWAS (drafted but not moved).
13. The urgent need to end compulsory police reports before emergency medical treatment (also drafted, but another senator submitted it before us).
14. The urgent action required to address the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict (time-bound, but not moved).

The following bills have also been proposed by Senator Ned Nwoko:

1. A bill to establish the Nigerian Youth Entrepreneurship Grant Program with an agency for oversight.
2. A bill to establish the Waste Management and Malaria Eradication Agency.
3. The One-Month Rent Limitation and Landlord Registry Act.
4. The Electoral Courts Establishment and Jurisdiction Act.
5. The Compulsory Professional Indemnity Act.
6. The Banks' Capitalization and Cashless Asset Acquisition Act.
7. The Self-Defense and Firearm Ownership Regulation Act.
8. A bill to repeal the Coroners Act CAP C17 laws of the Federal 2004 and re-enact the Coroners Systems Act and other related matters in 2023.
9. A bill to establish laws governing the election of Nigerians into the ECOWAS Parliament.
10. The Diaspora Voting Bill.
11. The Act Establishing the Parliamentary Governance System.
12. A bill to amend Sections 7, 162, and the Fourth Schedule of the 1999 Constitution (Local Government Autonomy).
13. A bill to alter the National Health Act, 2014 (as altered) to provide for a mandatory donor card and related matters.
14. A draft bill for Factoring Assignments (Establishment, ETC) 2023.

In the national assembly, Senator Nwoko has proven to be a powerful voice on critical national issues, such as environmental degradation, health, employment, education, and infrastructure needs. He has championed a bill on voting rights for Nigerians in the diaspora, as well as permanent seats for them in both chambers of the National Assembly. This is an incredibly patriotic move, as it allows Africa's largest democracy to enable its diaspora population, which has made significant contributions to the economy, to participate in national elections.

On November 28, 2023, Senator Nwoko introduced a bill for the establishment of the Waste Management and Malaria Eradication Agency. This bill is a testament to his selfless humanitarian efforts and his role as a leading environmentalist. Despite being a first-time senator, Senator Ned is highly respected and serves on 19 strategic committees, a level of trust that is unprecedented due to his tremendous capacity.

He is the vice chairman of the Senate Committee on Environment and also holds membership in other committees including NDDC, NEPAD, TETFUND, Gas, Upstream Petroleum, Works, Finance, Defence, Police, Drugs and Narcotics, Communications, State and Local Governments, Primary Health Care Development and Disease Control, Constitutional Amendment, Anti-corruption and Economic crimes, Youth and Sports.

Senator Nwoko's impact on the Senate so far is extraordinary. Apart from the golden era of late Senator Nosike Ikpo in the second republic, no other senator from Delta North has made such an impressive showing as Ned Nwoko. He is an exemplary figure, offering excellent representation to the Anioma people with integrity and honor, overshadowing the embarrassing scandals and perpetual ridicule that marked the past.

Senator Ned Nwoko has revived the lost glory of Anioma land, and the people are happy from all corners. It is just the beginning of his tenure, and a bright future awaits the people of Delta North with this illustrious senator.

Olorogun Godwin Obire
Senior Aide on Legislative & Political Matters
To Senator Prince Ned Nwoko, Delta North.

Thomas Etuh eating Unity Bank
Thomas Akoh Etuh is a very rich man.

He is the Chairman at Veritas Kapital Assurance Plc and Founder of the TAK group of companies, a multibillion naira conglomerate spanning Agriculture, Logistics, Asset Management, Aviation and Mining. His portfolio includes TAK Continental Limited, TAK Asset Management, TAK Agro, TAK Aviation, Thomasses and Associates Limited (UK) and Cape Cross Salt (PTY) of Namibia). Like many Nigerians of such considerable means, he made the jump from bank customer to bank insider, becoming the pioneer Vice-Chairman of the Unity Bank board of directors in April 2014.

A little under a year later in January 2015, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) approved his appointment as the Chairman of the board.

What happened during the 33 months from his appointment on January 23, 2015, to his retirement on October 4, 2017 would become a case study in regulatory malpractice, absence of compliance, and the sheer, unbridled greed of well-connected insiders in Nigeria’s financial system. Along the way, a previously healthy bank would find itself completely hollowed out after giving out hundreds of billions of naira in Non Performing Loans, reduced to meticulously cooking its books while secretly operating with negative share capital for the better part of a decade. A barely-disguised distress sale to a younger competitor would then be floated as the solution to the bank’s woes, even as its erstwhile chairman would continue to lavish stupendous amounts of money on his personal business interests.

Other people’s money.

Bank Insider Fraud: The Perfect Scam
Former American bank regulator William Black famously wrote a book about the 1980s U.S. Savings and Loans crisis called ‘The Best Way To Rob A Bank Is To Own One.’ In the book, he detailed how the average, run-of-the-mill, successful bank robbery nets an average of $7,500 along with the risk of a bullet to the chest, whereas a moderately competent bank executive could make many multiples of that sum using just 2 basic principles of accounting fraud – Compliance Fraud and issuance of so-called Liars Loans. When the goal is a heist, the idea behind the 2-pronged approach is simple but effective. Compliance Fraud entails lowering internal controls and restrictions that normally limit the bank’s exposure to high risk activity such as subprime lending. Doing this allows the bank to vastly increase its loan portfolio in a short time and thus report incredible levels of growth – at least in the short term. Working hand-in-glove with this is the increased issuance of Liars Loans – loans that are issued with little or no due diligence by the bank, effectively taking the borrower at their word, which a bank is never supposed to do.

According to Black, there are always 3 outcomes whenever this financial formula is put into action. First, the bank experiences incredible growth in the short term, and may be able to report an impressive balance sheet.

158 percent balance sheet growth in just 2 and a half years…
Next, Black says, the top ranking executives at the bank become stupendously wealthy.

Finally, the bank itself suffers catastrophic financial ruin that causes its collapse if it is not bailed out or taken over.

According to sources from within Unity Bank, Thomas Etuh appears to have treated Black’s “formula” as an instruction manual rather than a warning, and the inevitable disastrous outcome is imminent. Etuh, according to these sources, was singlehandedly responsible during his tenure, for inflating the bank’s number of Non Performing Loan (NPL) accounts to over 20,000, coming to a total NPL balance of more than N400 billion by the time he retired. Of this unfathomable number, at least 7 seven companies directly owned by or linked to Etuh alone were responsible for more than N29 billion worth of NPLs that would later be wiped off the books using financial sleight of hand. The following images are excerpts from large data files passed across to West Africa Weekly containing the comprehensive list of NPLs shortly before Etuh’s retirement from the board in 2017.

The companies left unredacted are all companies directly owned by or beneficially linked to Thomas Etuh.

Fertilizer & Chemical Ltd, TAK Agro & Chemicals Ltd, SDEM Erectors Nigeria Limited, North East Gold Comm. Ltd, Keptin Fertile Acres Limited, Yam International (NG) Limited and TAK Continental Ltd are some of the Etuh-linked entities on this list of NPLs, as identified by bank insiders to West Africa Weekly. Entities linked to Etuh alone were responsible for a double digit percentage of all non performing loans on the bank’s books. Recognising that this would become a problem, Etuh’s next move was either evil genius or just plain evil, depending on your perspective. In December 2016, Unity Bank under his leadership struck a sales agreement with a company called Frontier Capital Alternative Assets Limited (FCAAL) to offload its total NPL portfolio – then worth N242 billion – for just N6.43 billion. You can access the full sales agreement here.

The deal of a lifetime
FCAAL by the way, is also closely linked to Etuh according to sources at the bank. What this means is that after personally taking nearly N30 billion out of the bank whose board he chaired, in the process inflating its NPL portfolio well past every regulatory limit in Nigerian jurisprudence, Thomas Etuh and his associates at FCAAL would then use a fraction of what he took out of the bank to buy its loan portfolio worth approximately 37.6 times more than what they paid for it. In addition, all collateral used to secure these loans were also taken over by FCAAL in the deal, making it a double loss for Unity Bank and a double gain for Etuh and FCAAL. But he wasn’t done yet. The sales agreement was modified in May 2017 to account for, among other things, the expected value of the NPL portfolio by the end of that year. At the stroke of a pen, the value of the loan portfolio sold to FCAAL went up 44 percent to N436,751,633,476.96 – but the price paid by FCAAL did not change.

Thomas Etuh had successfully masterminded the obliteration of nearly half a trillion naira of wealth from the Nigerian banking system in exchange for the risible sum of N6 billion.

Once again, the deal of a lifetime
Explaining why this is an especially bad deal, a source who asked not to be named said this:

It is important to point out that the sale of Unity Bank Loans to Frontier was under the pretence that it was helping the NPL of the bank. That is far from the truth because Thomas Etuh, who is responsible for the majority of the NPLs, has created fresh NPLs in the bank. The major reason for the sale was to cover up the huge NPL belonging to Thomas Etuh. Note also that the loans and its collaterals were grossly undervalued with no reasonable revenue generated from the sale (N400bn loans sold for N6bn.) Moreover, the sale eroded the bank’s capital, throwing it deeply into the red. In addition, Frontier Capital has made very little recovery most of which were at ridiculous concessions because it did not pay any reasonable considerations for the loans.

The problem with all this was that regardless of whatever accounting shenanigans could be enacted to hide the fact that Unity Bank was nearly half a trillion naira in the hole due to compliance fraud and Liars Loans, that kind of leakage could not be hidden for long. It was bound to show up on the books eventually and result in the first bank run in Nigeria since the January 2006 collapse of Société Générale Bank of Nigeria. Certainly if the bank were being audited by PwC or KPMG, such gaping holes in the balance sheet could not be hidden for long.

Which perhaps makes it rather interesting that the bank’s long-standing auditor turned out to be a little-known audit firm based in Kano called Ahmed Zakari & Co. The image below is its Lagos office. Feel free to draw your own conclusions, if any.

A picture tells a thousand words
Explaining the ongoing conspiracy of silence at Unity Bank, a current staff member with knowledge of the matter said:

With this criminal sale of the Bank’s assets, the bank shareholders funds became negative to the tune of about N270 billion. The bank has been operating with huge negative capital for several years.

Boardroom And Regulators Unite In Mischief
The Banks and Other Financial Institutions Act (BOFIA) 2020 and the CBN’s Prudential Guidelines contain multiple clauses that criminalise pretty much everything described above. The Prudential Guidelines for example, state that the maximum amount that can be given as a loan to a single borrower or group of related borrowers is 20 percent of the bank’s shareholder funds. Thomas Etuh himself claims that Unity Bank’s shareholders’ funds stood at N31 billion when he took charge, going up to N80 billion by the time he left. Putting aside the whistleblowers’ insistence that Unity Bank has in fact, been running with negative shareholders’ funds since 2016, if we are to use his own dodgy math, his NPL portfolio of N29 billion grossly exceeds the prudential guidelines both in the case of N31 billion SHF (93.5 percent) and N80 billion SHF (36.25 percent).

For some unspecified reason, both the Management and Board of Unity Bank showed complete disregard for these regulations and continued to grant loans to Thomas Etuh in amounts far in excess of the regulatory limits. The CBN meanwhile, appears to have entirely vacated its regulatory position where Unity Bank is concerned. According to staff who were in the know, the bank’s treasurer, Sunny Bakwunye was indicted by a high level committee within the bank for fraudulently diverting N13 billion belonging to the bank.

The recommendation of the committee’s report was that he should be sacked and the N13 billion immediately recovered. For an unknown reason, sources informed West Africa Weekly, this recommendation was never carried out by the Managing Director, and the Treasurer remains not just a free man, but also retains the job to this day.

Unity Bank MD, Tomi Somefun
Moreover, the inside word is that as the CBN continues to sit on its hands instead of regulating Unity Bank properly, the risk factor for contagion is growing within the Nigerian financial system due to Thomas Etuh’s insatiable appetite for toxic NPLs. The following memo to the board of the bank signed by the MD and other officials shows that Thomas Etuh has recently been granted new loans totalling N10 billion by the bank he quite literally ate into the red. Once again, the approval for the loan was given with no questions asked.

In case you are in any doubt about who is behind “Lighthouse Capital Limited,” the CAC document below should clear that up.

Worst of all, as confirmed by all sources, there is a plan afoot to cover up all these financial atrocities at Unity Bank by going into a merger with Providus Bank. This move is apparently being spearheaded by Thomas Etuh with the support of “allies” at the CBN.

Regulatory Questions That Need Answers
Ahead of any proposed merger involving Unity Bank, the CBN, NDIC and EFCC must carry out investigations to answer the following questions, failing which they might be exposing the Nigerian financial system to potentially catastrophic contagion:

What is the exact value of insider Non Performing Loans covered up in the sale to Frontier Capital?

Why was the N13bn fraud by the Treasurer covered up, and why were the recommendations of the committee never implemented?

Why and how has Unity Bank continued to operate with negative shareholders funds till date?

What is the role of the auditor in keeping this fraud going?

What is the true status of the new loans granted to Thomas Etuh by Unity Bank? Have they become NPLs?

Are there other directors of Unity Bank who are beneficiaries of these loans to Thomas Etuh, which is an incentive for their continued breach of the regulatory limit on insider loans?

insider trading? All in a day's work. A glimpse at the dark underbelly

Senator Prince Ned Nwoko's Accomplishments Speak Louder than Propaganda

Senator Ned came prepared to represent Delta North in the National Assembly when he was elected in June 2023. He has made his Anioma constituents proud, displaying remarkable competence and charisma while addressing important issues in the red chambers. His impact goes well beyond political rhetoric.

Senator Nwoko has initiated the empowerment of 250 youths and women through a skills acquisition program in Asaba, the capital of Delta and the heartland of Anioma.

Senior Aide on Legislative & Political Matters

On the other points, I make good judgement with data. Chelsea has won the league only twice with a striker scoring more than 20 goals. Matter of fact, the first two league titles were won by all of the support casts, not by main strikers. This is despite having renowned names like Crespo, Mutu, Shevchenko and Drogba.

have you been following the war?

The figure is called according to Hamas Media agency, because it is unverified

Here you go again with it didn't start on oct7, I am not judging this war from emotional perspective, but from reality.

This attack has no meaning, it has only brought untold hardship, death and suffering on the Palestiner people

The world will cry make noise as usual just like in the case of Ukraine and Russia. After a little while everyone will go back home as if nothing happens

At the end Israel will take more lands, kill more Palestiners

This is the reality, they are better ways of getting their country than the October 7 attack. I repeat that attack make no meaning

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / Re: Fc Barcelona Fan Thread: "més Que Un Club" by oliverano: 2:05pm On Jun 06
hopefulLandlord:

The takes you see here is hilarious lol. Ter Stergen that was getting clean sheets upandan with amazing saves wasn't a great shot stopper?

grin grin grin grin grin

Hopelandlord, I'm happy that you didn't come today to troll Barca using Mabape and Madrid but today you stand a goal keeper that has been part of all the UCL humiliations at FC Barcelona hahaha 🤣🤣🤣

Ter Stergen although good in Laliga remains one of the weakest in Europe. When it matters the most, he gives up. Go and watch Barca Vs Bayern 8:2, juven Vs Barca 3:0, PSG Vs Barca, 2020, PSG Vs Barca 2024, Barca Vs Liverpool, in fact go and watch highlights of all UCL since 2014/2015 then come back.

In Laliga he's world-class. In Europe, UCL including Europa where he conceded 4 against Frankfurt he's been sh!!!t.

All these nah facts and not made up stuffs.

May be I was wrong by saying he wasn't a great shot stopper in his prime but when it matters against quality opponents he's been found wanting. He's incredibly fragile and always afriad in high pressure games in Europe and some games Vs Madrid in Laliga/copa

I can screen shot 20 different monikers on BB and Reddit talking about how weak he's been in Europe.

40 year old Neur is still #1. If Emi was German with all the injuries Neur has suffered from, no way he'll still be #1. Stegen gads step up.

#facts!

Politics / Re: Minimum Wage: The Hypocrisy Of Tinubu Supporter, Ogbeni Dipo (2015 Vs 2024) by femi4: 12:42pm On Jun 06
Crimecity:
Btw 50k in 2014/15 is worth more than 100k in 2024.

50k in 2014 was approximately $300.
100k in 2024 is approximately $70.

50k in 2014 got you 7 bags of rice.
100k in 2024 gets you 1 bag.

Yesterday he was a supporter of Buhari and asked for wage increment, today he is supporting Tinubu and now talking about population control instead of advising Tinubu to increase the wage amount like he did in 2015.

Hypocrites!!

Tomorrow, they will say Obidients and anyone kicking against the current happenings and policies of this Tinubu administration as Enemies of NIGERIA
The guy is daft. What has PhD got to do with number of kids
