Sports / Nigeria Advances To Knockout Stages In FIFA Women’s World Cup by DamolaDamola: 1:11pm On Jul 31, 2023
Nigeria Advances to Knockout Stages in FIFA Women’s World Cup

Nigeria's impressive run in the FIFA Women’s World Cup continues as they secure a spot in the knockout stages despite a goalless draw against the Republic of Ireland. The Nigerian team extended their unbeaten streak to seven matches, showcasing their resilience and determination on the field.

The match held significant importance for Nigeria, as they kept a close watch on the clash between australia and Canada in Group B. A win for Nigeria would have potentially secured them the top spot in the group. However, australia took an early lead, altering the dynamics of the standings.

Nigeria had a chance to take the lead early in the game when Asisat Oshoala made a break behind the Irish defense. Unfortunately, her attempt missed the target, allowing Ireland to keep their hopes alive for their first-ever WWC point.

The first half saw limited action near the goalmouth, but Nigeria seemed comfortable with their position in second place. They were aware of the possibilities to top the group, but the pressure seemed to ease a bit. However, a crucial block from Oluwatosin Demehin saved Nigeria from conceding an almost certain goal by Katie McCabe.

As the match approached its final stages, Nigeria needed a goal to claim the top spot, with australia holding a significant lead against Canada. Despite their efforts, Nigeria couldn't find the back of the net, leading to a goalless draw. This result secured their second-place finish in the group, and they now eagerly await their opponent in the last-16 stage.

On the other hand, Ireland's journey in their WWC debut came to an end as they crashed out in the group stage. Despite the disappointment, they showed promise and determination throughout their matches.

Nigeria's impressive form and solid performance in the group stage make them a team to watch in the knockout stages of the Women's World Cup. With their eyes set on advancing further, they will undoubtedly give their all in the upcoming matches.

Sports / Nigeria Vs Rep Of Ireland by habeeboladimeji(m): 8:25am On Jul 31, 2023
Nigeria go head to head with Rep of Ireland today
Ireland are going home no matter the outcome of this game, having narrowly lost each of their two games so far to australia and Canada.
Nigeria simply needs to avoid defeat to guarantee a place in the knockouts in successive tournaments, whatever else happens. They could also get through with a defeat as long as australia beat Canada. A draw would then be enough to finish first if australia beat Canada, or alternatively they would need to match Canada's margin of victory should that game go the other way in order to stay on top.

Sports / Super Falcons’ Stars Risk Suspension Against Ireland - Pulse Sports by Tundetech2: 9:21pm On Jul 30, 2023
A couple of Super Falcons players will have to play against Ireland with the safety on as they risk being suspended for Nigeria's Round of 16 clash

Two key players on the Super Falcons’ roster are at risk of being suspended for Nigeria’s round of 16 clash if they scale through the group stage.

Super Falcons set for Round of 16 qualification
The Super Falcons are on the brink of reaching the second round of the Women’s World Cup for the second time in a row, having never managed the feat in their history before this.

Thanks to a win over co-hosts australia and a draw against reigning Olympic champions Canada, Nigeria currently sits atop Group B and only need a draw against Ireland to seal a place in the round of 16.

The Super Falcons would have to tread carefully to avoid going into the second round of games short-staffed as two key players will play the final group game against Ireland while walking a disciplinary tightrope to dodge a suspension.

Alozie and Oshoala risk second-round suspension
Both Michelle Alozie and Asisat Oshoala are one yellow card away from suspension after picking up yellow cards in Nigeria’s famous win over australia.

Alozie was booked for a first-half foul, while Oshoala was shown a yellow card for her celebration after taking off her shirt following her goal for the Super Falcons against australia.

The duo will now have to avoid picking up another yellow card against Ireland, as consecutive matches with yellow cards attract a one-match suspension.

Another Super Falcons player, Blessing Demehin, also picked up a yellow card in a previous match, however, her booking came against Canada, meaning she is not at risk of a suspension even if she gets yellow carded against Ireland.

This remarkable event took place during Morocco’s hard-fought 1-0 victory against South Korea on July 30, 2023. FIFA had approved the use of head coverings for religious reasons in 2014, allowing players like Benzina to represent their faith while playing.

The match was held at Hindmarsh Stadium in australia, and it showcased the talents of both teams. However, it was Benzina’s decision to wear a hijab that captured the attention and admiration of fans and players alike.

Sports / ‘There’s Still Work To Do’ - Waldrum Charges Supers Falcons To Keep Going by Tundetech2: 12:22pm On Jul 29, 2023
After a sensational win over australia, Super Falcons coach Randy Waldrum believes that there is still more for the team to do

Super Falcons head coach Randy Waldrum has charged his players not to relent in their efforts after securing a famous win over World Cup hosts australia.

Waldrum keen to continue good form
Nigeria overcame great odds to beat australia 3-2 in Brisbane, and consequently went top of Group B, putting them in a great position for a place in the second round ahead of their final group match against Ireland.

With qualification virtually secured for the next round, the Super Falcons could be tempted to rest on their oars, but coach Waldrum is keen to impress the need for more work.

Speaking after the victory over australia, Waldrum said, "We know there's still work to do. So we'll enjoy it tonight and then get our recovery going tomorrow because it was a very, very taxing game on us physically."

Waldrum believes Super Falcons can make a mark
The American coach also re-stated his belief that Super Falcons can achieve something special in australia, tipping them to go further than any expectations after pulling off two credible results against Canada and australia.

He said, "I told (the players) after the match, you know, keep believing, keep believing in yourself because great things can happen for teams when you really fight for each other.

"And it's not always sometimes the best talent that wins. Sometimes it's the best team, the team that works best together -- and we're enjoying the journey.”

The Super Falcons face Ireland in their final Group B match, hoping to finish top of their group for the first time in World Cup history with a win against the debutants.

Sports / Super Falcons: Why Nigeria’s Historic Win Against Australia Changes Nothing by Tundetech2: 11:22am On Jul 29, 2023
The Super Falcons of Nigeria beat australia in historic fashion but that win against the co-hosts only papers over the cracks.

Several hours have passed since Nigeria shocked the world by coming from behind to beat australia 3-2 and the euphoria still has not died down.

The win against the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup co-hosts was a truly fine moment and solidifies the Super Falcons’ chances of qualifying out of Group B.

The heroines who pulled this off and their millions of well-wishers around the world deserve to revel in the moment but they must do so with caution for a number of reasons.

Nigeria played well, really well in fact but there is at least one reason why the result was such a surprise, and also why they were such massive underdogs pre-game against australia.

And one win, however impressive, does not change all of that, the mountain of problems surrounding the team pre-tournament still exists and would most likely hinder their progression at the Mundial.

The Super Falcons still have a tactical problem
Nigeria finished both games at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup so far with 32% and 36% possession respectively.

And although possession stats do not tell the full story, it does well enough to paint the picture of the Super Falcons’ approach so far.

Waldrum’s side pretty much sat back and hoped to hit both of their oppositions on the counter, a tactic that worked much better against australia than it did against Canada.

This is not a criticism of the approach, it was what the team needed to secure positive results from games where they ideally should have gotten nothing.

The point is, the counter-attacking approach might not work against every team and the Super Falcons have not necessarily been great at controlling games.

The next game against the Republic of Ireland will test Nigeria’s ability to create chances without counter-attacks as the Irish have also adopted similar tactics in both of their games so far.

So how will the Falcons play when they carry the full burden of creativity against another defensive-minded team? That is a question for Waldrum to answer.

Randy Waldrum’s Super Falcons wahala
Speaking of Waldrum, the American manager was mired in controversy just before the Mundial for his comments about the Nigeria Football Federation and their peculiar ways of football administration.

What followed was a nasty back-and-forth with Ademola Olajire, the NFF spokesperson who ironically spoke with reckless abandon on the matter.

That matter which brought disrepute and unwanted international attention to the senior women’s national team is still not done.

The great result against australia might have been enough to shut up dissenting voices on social media but the circumstances that led to the brouhaha have not automatically disappeared.

There was still a standoff between the players and the federation as recently as two days prior to the kickoff of the World Cup over financial issues of course.

Report: NFF owes Super Falcons coach Randy Waldrum ₦64.4m
FOOTBALL

To simply ignore that situation as Nigerians because of one win and hope that it fixes itself is equivalent to going to bed with the roof on fire.

The Super Falcons are a collection of disgruntled players led by an unhappy head coach all of whom are self-motivating based on passion for the country and desire to achieve greatness at the highest level and nothing else.

Questions surrounding Randy Waldrum
The tournament in australia and New Zealand was preceded by widespread criticism from Nigerian football stakeholders including fans and most especially the media, criticism that was well earned in all honestly.

The general consensus was that the team was underperforming under the American’s tutelage with the poor outing at the 2022 WAFCON in Morocco regarded as the final nail in his managerial coffin.

So it is not illogical to say that a win and a draw, however impressive, is not enough to completely whitewash Waldrum’s reputation in such a short period of time.

Human beings are fickle, football fans even more so which is why people have gone from asking for Waldrum to be sacked before the World Cup to now dubbing him the Messiah just two games in.

Of course, it is only fair that the results improve Waldrum’s reputation but it should not be enough to completely rebrand him so quickly.

Notwithstanding, Randy Waldrum and the Super Falcons have surpassed everyone’s expectations so far which is great, just do not forget why the expectations were so low in the first place.

Sports / Where Is Desire Okparanozie, Women's World Cup 2023 by oxygeng: 10:47am On Jul 29, 2023
Please fellow Nigerians and indeed all football lovers across the country and around the world; am sure we are pleased with the performance of the super falcons so far at the world cup. However there is something I considered very important we have not taken note of. It's about two members of the team; Desire Okparanozie and gift Monday. For those that follows the game squarely not on sentiment, you could clearly see that IFEOMA ONUMONU has not lived up to average as a main striker right from the first whistle against canada (I will desist from mentioning her numerous flaws).
Again I will play down the Gift Monday's side just for the benefit of the doubt, but I believe we all know how good she is.
Now to the main reason why I am writing this:
Desire Okparanozie, What is going on? Have you people noticed how anonymous and "ghostly" she is in the team? She rarely takes part in celebrating any of the moments, has never been asked to warm up in dared and obvious moment when her impact is desperately needed, rather inexperienced players like okoronkwo Esther and co. are dangerously gambled into games, which almost cost us the full three points against australia. Again I have not heard of any reports of Okparanozie been sick or injured.
Well we knew the travesty from the very arrogant nff officials on her Image not too distant past that led to her expulsion from the team for a period of time. Again we are aware just before the commencement of the tournament the team had a brush with same good for nothing nff just for speaking up, asking for clarifications in certain areas. I may be wrong, could it be that she has been singled out again by some power drunk individuals? Or is it a personal thing with the coaching crew? Which ever one it's I do sincerely feel that, the patriotic young lady deserves none of these emotional torture she has been subjected to. Please if there is any one with helpful information regarding this kindly help with it.
Sports / WWC: Nigeria's Permutations For Qualifying From Group. by Flango: 5:32pm On Jul 28, 2023
So far, the Nigerian ladies are in control of their group and their fate. However, being Nigerians, we cannot completely rule out the calculator grin.

So, here we go...

NIGERIA: Need at least a draw against Republic of Ireland to be sure to qualify for the knockout stages, but they could yet be eliminated if they are beaten by the Irish.

If Nigeria beat Ireland, they will top the group if Canada lose or draw. If both Nigeria and Canada win, top spot will be decided on group goal difference and goals scored between those two countries. At present, both have a goal difference of +1, and Nigeria are top having scored one more goal.

- If both teams win by the same scoreline (so both 1-0), Nigeria will win the group

- If both teams win by the same margin, but Canada score one more goal (so 2-1 and 1-0), it goes to head-to-head. As their group tie finished 0-0, placings would be decided on Fair Play points, and if level, random drawing of lots.

- If Nigeria win by a higher-scoring one-goal margin (so 2-1 to Canada's 1-0), they top the group

- If either team wins by a greater margin (so Nigeria 1-0, and Canada 2-0), that team wins the group (Canada in this example).

If Nigeria lose and Canada win, Nigeria are through: 1. Canada, 2. Nigeria, 3. australia, 4. Republic of Ireland

If Nigeria lose and australia draw, second place will be decided on group goal difference between those two countries. At present, Nigeria have a goal difference advantage of 1, which would automatically be wiped out.

- If both teams lose by one goal and score the same number (so, 0-0 and 0-1 or 1-1 and 1-2 leaves australia and Nigeria identical); Nigeria go through on head to head.

- If Nigeria lose by one goal but score more than australia (so, 0-0 australia and 1-2 Nigeria), Nigeria are second on goals scored.

- If Nigeria lose by one goal but australia score more goals (so, 1-1 australia and 0-1 Nigeria), australia are second on goals scored.

- If Nigeria lose by 2+ goals, they are out with australia in second

If Nigeria and Canada both lose, the two teams will be level on four points so second place will be decided on group goal difference and goals scored between those two countries. It works in reverse to both teams winning.

- If both teams lose by the same scoreline (so both 1-0), Nigeria will finished second on goals scored

- If both teams lose by the same margin, but Canada score one more goal (so 1-2 Canada and 0-1 Nigeria), it goes to head-to-head. As their group tie finished 0-0, placings would be decided on Fair Play points, and if level, random drawing of lots

- If Nigeria lose by a higher-scoring one-goal margin (so 1-2 to Canada's 0-1), they finish second

- If either team loses by a greater margin (so Nigeria 0-1, and Canada 0-2), the team that loses by the smaller margin finishes second.

Sports / Nigerian Men Confess Love For Asisat Oshoala After Her Shirtless Celebration by tulapatv: 4:08pm On Jul 28, 2023
'Agba Baller' Oshoala has won the hearts of Naija men on social media following her passionate celebration after scoring for the Super Falcons in their win against australia.

Asisat Oshoala stole the headlines for the Super Falcons in their famous 3-2 comeback win against australia on Thursday at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Oshoala who did not start for the gallant Falcons yesterday, came on as a 64th minute substitute for the scorer of Nigeria’s first goal Uchenna Kalu.

A minute later the Super Falcons took the lead against australia courtesy of a strike by Osinachi Ohale.

And seven minutes later, Oshoala would trigger jubilation across the country as the 28-year-old Barca Femeni striker finished in clinical fashion to stretch Nigeria’s lead against australia.

Oshoala’s strike proved crucial for the Super Falcons at full-time as The Matildas managed to pull one goal back in stoppage time after Alanna Kennedy fired home for the host nation.

Asisat Oshoala: Super Falcons star triggers reactions on social media following shirtless celebration

Oshoala’s shirtless celebration has become a hot talking point on social media as fans and supporters have been divided on whether the Falcons star to celebrate by taking off her jersey.

After she grabbed Nigeria’s third goal, Oshoala took off her shirt in wild celebrations while running to the Super Falcons bench to celebrate with the rest of the squad, leaving the upper part of her body covered with a sports bra.

Following Agba Baller’s celebration, some Nigerian men have since taken to social media to adore the Super Falcons star, while declaring their love for Nigeria’s no.8.

Pulse Sports ranked Asisat Oshaola among the hottest Nigerian female footballers in 2023.

One user wrote: “My love for @AsisatOshoala knows no boundary! I love her so much,” before another user declared: “She fine, come sabi Ball..Agba baller 001”.

A third tweet read: “I love you legend,” and another wrote: “I love football cos of #agbaballer”

Oshoala will be hoping her goal can boost her and the Super Falcons confidence to scure qualification to the World Cup round of 16 stages.

The Super Falcons currently lead Group B ahead of a crucial final group game match against Ireland.

A win for Nigeria guarantees them a place in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup round of 16.

Sports / 2023 WWC: Waldrum Talks Up Incredible Super Falcons Win Against Australia by solbase10(m): 11:36am On Jul 28, 2023
Super Falcons head coach Randy Waldrum has heaped plaudits on his players following the team’s impressive performance against australia on Thursday.

Waldrum’s side recorded their first win at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, edging out co-hosts australia 3-2 at the Lang Park, Brisbane.

The Super Falcons went behind late in the first half before rallying to win the contest.

The American declared that the Falcons can beat anybody if they continue to play together as seen vs australia.

“The mentality of the team is incredible. It would have been easy to give up before halftime after they scored, but they responded immediately,” Waldrum was quoted by VM.

“They showed great resilience to come back and turn the game around in the second half. I just think the team has incredible spirit, and the chemistry together is unbelievable. As long as we have that, we can beat anybody.”

The Super Falcons will face already eliminated Republic of Ireland in their last group game on Monday.

A point from the game will be enough for them to seal a place in the Round of 16.

Sports / Asisat Oshoala Shirtless Celebration Sparks Mixed Reactions by thisweekng: 11:00am On Jul 28, 2023
Mixed reactions have trailed the shirtless celebration of Super Falcons’ Asisat Oshoala at the ongoing Women’s World Cup tournament in australia and New Zealand, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The Barcelona forward, who came on as a second-half substitute, swooped in on a defensive mix-up in the 72nd minute and beat an Australian defender for pace, before slotting past the goalkeeper from a tight angle to hand the Super Falcons a 3-1 lead.

The 29-year-old pulled off her jersey and ran to the sideline to celebrate her goal with her teammates, getting a yellow card in the process.

Her iconic photo has since stirred fans on social media, with some questioning her faith and morality.

A Twitter user Olumide Oluyisola wrote, ”Good goal. But due to with so much indiscipline, she (Oshoala) just got an absolutely useless yellow card, which may become a problem for the team if they go far in the tournament.”

Journalist Debola Adebanjo leaped in Oshoala’s defence, saying the picture of her celebration will go viral across the globe.

“An icon is an icon. Oshoala’s shirtless celebration will be picked up by every media from now till the end of this World Cup. When you are big, you are just that big.”

Popular Nigerian comedian, Segun Ogundipe, popularly known as Lafup also weighed in on the conversation saying, “That jersey pull-off is a major move towards a deeper conversation, an epic example of balance for better.”

Sola Egunjobi also expressed fears that her yellow card doesn’t come back to haunt the Falcons.

He wrote, “Hope she doesn’t miss a key game after a second yellow card. We need to be careful about these thing in football.”
Ojoko Timipre expressed delight at her celebration.

“Never knew Asisat Oshoala had a flat stomach (tummy). I like girls with flat tummy and above all including her flat tummy she is better than Mudrky of Chelsea, Martial of Manchester United and Ferran Torres of FC Barcelona. She is the total package.”

Sports / Nigeria Defeat Australia To Level Point With Canada by godswillita992: 8:51am On Jul 28, 2023
Nigeria pulled off the first major shock at the Women's World Cup on Thursday by defeating australia 3-2, endangering the chances of the tournament co-hosts.
Nigeria Defeat australia with Asisat Oshoala's 72nd-minute Volley

Asisat Oshoala's 72nd-minute volley into an open goal secured a well-deserved victory for the African team after Uchenna Kanu equalized Emily van Egmond's opener just before half-time, and Osinachi Ohale nudged Nigeria ahead in the second half.

Despite Alanna Kennedy's header goal in the 10th minute of stoppage time, australia couldn't close the gap, and Nigeria held on to achieve one of the most memorable wins in their history at the global showcase.

Nigeria won the game in front of a large crowd at Lang Park, tying Canada for first place in Group B with four points but taking the lead on goal differential.

The 11-time African winners were scheduled to play group-finale opponent Ireland, who had already been eliminated.

For the Matildas to secure a spot in the round of 16, they must defeat Olympic champions Canada in their last group match.

Unfortunately, australia was without talismanic striker Sam Kerr and attacking midfielder Mary Fowler due to injuries, and their makeshift forward line struggled to find the back of the net despite numerous chances that flew wide and over the bar in both halves.

Sports / Onome Ebi Becomes First African To Feature In Six Women’s World Cups by naptu2: 4:11am On Jul 28, 2023
Ebi becomes first African player to feature in six Women’s World Cups

Idris Shehu
July 27,2023

When Onome Ebi was brought on in the later stages of the Super Falcon’s victory over australia on Thursday, she strode into the history book as the first African woman to feature in six World Cups.

The 40-year-old Nigerian has achieved a feat only matched by Japan’s Homare Sawa, Christine Sinclair of Canada and Brazil’s Marta.

Only Brazil’s Formiga surpasses the number with her participation in seven editions of the competition.

Ebi made her World Cup debut for Nigeria at the 2003 edition in the US. She was 20 years old when she came on for late Ifeanyi Chiejine in a 3-0 loss to North Korea in the Falcons’ opening game of the tournament.

She had started her career with the erstwhile Nigerian women’s football powerhouse Omidiran Babes.

The defender continued her development — sharpening her grit and determination — with the Oshogbo-based team and was also named in the Falcons’ squad for the 2007 Women’s World Cup in China.

Ebi started the first two games as Nigeria crashed out in the group stage with just one point.

A year after the competition, Bayelsa Queens came calling, and Ebi heeded. She won laurels with the club before her eventual sojourn to Europe.

She moved to Sakarya Spor Club on a one-year deal. Then a stint at Pitea FC was followed by Djurgardens IF, both in the Swedish Damallsvenskan.

Ebi joined the Turkish female team Atasehir Belediyesi Spor Club in 2011.

Shortly, she was named in Uche Eucharia’s squad for the 2011 women’s World Cup in Germany. She was ever-present in the Falcons side that defeated Canada 1-0 but finished shy of a knockout stage ticket.

The Nigerian went on to captain Atasehir to the league title in 2012. At the Turkish club, Ebi was often utilized as a forward. She scored 27 goals in the 2013 campaign, catapulting her team to the second spot in the league.

Ebi joined FC Minsk in the Belarusian Premier League in 2014 and helped the club to the title. She featured for Nigeria in the 2015 Women’s World Cup in Canada. Nigeria also failed to progress beyond the group stage with just one point.

The defender went on to win the Belarusian Women’s Cup and the Belarusian Women’s Super Cup twice.

Ebi moved to China and signed for Henan Jianye in 2017.

She was a lynchpin of the Falcons side that qualified for the second round in the 2019 Women’s World Cup in France.

Ebi left China after three years and returned to Europe with Levante Las Planas in 2022.

Her contract with the Spanish side ran out after a season, and the experienced player has now returned to the Nigerian Women’s Football League (NWFL) in the books of Abia Angels.

Meanwhile, the 3-2 win over australia on Thursday sends the Nigerians to the top of group B marginally on a superior number of goals scored by the team.
