Sports / Liz Cambage Denies Calling D'tigress Monkeys - Nigerian Players Reacts by tundetech5: 1:34pm On Aug 09, 2023
Nigerian players react on social media after Liz Cambage denies calling D'Tigress monkeys.

Following australia's Liz Cambage's explosive interview with Taylor Rooks of Bleacher Report the Nigerian basketball social media space has been on fire.

In a lengthy interview with Taylor Rooks of Bleacher Report, Cambage addressed claims that she racially disparaged Nigerian players during a warm-up game for the Opals' 2021 Olympic campaign.

Cambage confirmed she had been involved in a physical incident during the warm-up game and that there "were words exchanged" before withdrawing from the Tokyo Games due to mental health issues.

The interview has brought back memories of the situation that a lot of people put in the past.

Liz Cambage's initial response to monkey speculation
When the accusation was first made was a statement by Liz CXamage that apologized to the Nigerian team.

She said, "The incident that took place in the pre-Olympic scrimmage with the Nigerian national team was handled privately almost a year ago,

"I am very disappointed and hurt by the events and accusations that have unfolded in the Australian media.

"The account of what took place is inaccurate and misleading. I did not use the racial slur toward the Nigerian team that has been circulating.

"After I unintentionally fouled a Nigerian player on court, I was then physically assaulted by this player on the sideline of my bench.

"I was hit in the face and pushed to the ground, but I walked away. ... We did not have professional referees to manage and prioritize both teams' safety during this highly physical scrimmage.

"This is not an excuse of justification to the events that unfolded or my actions, however, I feel that a full picture of the environment that led to this outcome must be shared.

" I have taken responsibility and accountability for my involvement in what occurred. I genuinely apologized to the Nigerian team and I once again am sorry that these events are being rehashed.

"I truly hope that I can move forward from this incident and apply actionable effort to be my best self."

Liz Cambage explains D'Tigress monkey chants from her perspective
Cambage spoke on her hesitation to compete at the Tokyo Olympics when asked about the claims and why her side of the story is so different.

She said, “A lot of girls don’t like me and a lot of times I say no to something, people really want to make me look like the issue.

“I never wanted to go into that Olympics. I spent the whole week going into that bubble saying I don’t want to be in the bubble.

"I’ll show you text messages between me and Sandy Brondello [saying] I do not want to go to this Olympics, I do not want to be a part of this Olympics, I do not believe in this Olympics.

“I feel like the Tokyo Olympics is everything against what the true Olympics is. Like the Olympics is about nations coming together, not weird bubbles.

"I’m not a bubble girl. I have anxiety and I need to be able to leave situations like that [snaps fingers]... there is so much pressure.

“This is the pinnacle of sport. This is the Olympics. I’m already struggling mentally and physically. I’m open and honest about everything...

“This one girl that has been saying I called them monkeys... I’ll call you a b***h. I’ll call you a dumb b***h. That’s what I say to people I get angry with,” Cambage said.

“I don’t really lean towards racial insults. That’s not how I go. I’m very pro-Black. I did not say these things. This girl that is saying all these things had a lot to say about me.

“Leak the tapes. I’ve never owned the tapes. Leak the tapes. Y’all want to see the truth, leak the tapes. Everyone in australia that has seen the tapes, still lying about what is on these tapes, leak the tapes.”

Liz Cambage issues statement after new tape
A section of the tapes has now been revealed on social media which has sparked more wild reactions on social media.

Liz Cambage has issued a statement following the release of an additional video showing their confrontation at a pre-Tokyo Olympics scrimmage.

She denied racist slurs, though, and added that she was "pretty annoyed at all the fake news and lies.

A opposing player was elbowed in the head by Cambage during a practice match in Las Vegas that was played behind closed doors, as seen in the footage

After the altercation, the newly released video shows Cambage leaving in the direction of the australia bench while also appearing to speak with Nigerian players nearby.

In response to what Cambage stated, a Nigerian player then rushes toward her and appears to punch her as the two teams converge.

The statement by the 31-year-old said, “In light of the circulating footage from the 2021 scrimmage between the Opals and D’Tigress, I want to provide clarity on my recollection of the events.

“Before the scrimmage, I had expressed concerns to Opals staff about the unacceptable playing conditions within the COVID ‘Bubble’ they were imposing.

"The circulating video portrays a highly physical game with no officiating, resulting in me being attacked and sustaining a concussion.

"Contrary to false claims, I did not use racial slurs or refer to anyone as a monkey, which is evident from the footage.

“To set the record straight, I never stated that I had officially joined the Nigerian national team. Instead, I expres

"I had discussions with staff members about the necessary steps to become eligible, and thought I was doing them. I extend my best wishes to all players on D’Tigress.

“My dedication to fostering positive change in the sport I love remains unwavering. I have always taken pride in representing the game throughout my career.

“I kindly urge the media and fans to fact-check before publishing and to avoid spreading unverified claims. I also send well wishes to all my former teammates. Looking forward to seeing you all on the court.

“Love and light.”

Liz Cambage claims Nigeria wants her
In the interview, a statement by Cambage that went viral was her saying the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) want her to dump australia.

She said, “Like, why does Nigeria want me to leave australia and represent them? We’re filing for me to leave the Australian team so I can represent Nigeria. I’ve been in cahoots, I’ve been talking with them since all of this happened.

“This is what I mean, people don’t know the truth. I honestly haven’t had one journalist that has written all these lies actually come to me and want my side of the story. There’s a whole tape with the truth out there.

D'Tigress react to Liz Cambage
Nigerian basketball players have taken to social media to debunk the statements by Cambage about the incident and her international allegiance switch.

Promise Amukamara on Twitter said, “She called us Monkeys & told us to go back to our country. Yes she said that!” wrote Amukamara.

“Literally everyone from both teams have the same story BUT her, so y’all do the math! & the only person she has been in “cahoots” w/ was the former coach of our National team & he’s no longer the coach, so there’s that!”

Sarah Ogoke a key player as D'Tigress beat Senegal to win the 2023 FIBA Women's Afrobasket also added, “We are not recruiting you and you definitely spewed racist profanities against us during our scrimmage”.

There are claims that the negotiations for Cambage to switch were made by the former coach but have been shit down since the appointment of Rena Wakama.

The saga involving Cambage is not expected to end soon as many stakeholders are expected to give their opinion going forward.

Sports / NBBF Denies Talks To Get Liz Cambage To Represent Nigeria by naptu2: 4:06am On Aug 09, 2023

Colin NOT Collins 🇳🇬🇺🇸 @ColinUdoh

I’ve spoken to @nbbfonline leadership on this and got two things from them

1. There was actually a racist slur used which caused that game to be stopped

2. They are NOT in any talks with Cambage about representing Nigeria.

There is a little bit more to the story, though. So let me explain. In the immediate aftermath of the bust up during that scrimmage, @ecambage went into the Nigeria dressing room to apologize. After that, she spoke to officials, including then coach Otis Hughely.

One official who was part of the conversation said she told them australia don’t like her and she would like to switch and represent Nigeria. Coach Hughely responded by saying imagine how great it would be to have her, Liz Williams and the Ogwumikes playing for Nigeria.

Remember, this was when the Ogwumike sisters were trying to switch from Team USA. However, that was about the extent of the conversation and nothing else happened beyond that. A few days ago, Cambage reached out to an NBBF official, with a heads up about her interview.

She told the official what she had said in the interview and that she had told them she was talking to him about switching to Nigeria. I called the official and he confirmed receiving the text from her, but said he did not respond as he was busy at AfroBasket

However, he did say that the NBBF Board had no intention of requesting a switch for @ecambage, the board had not even heard about it let alone discuss it and there was zero chance of that happening.

The very exact words used were “it would be easier for an elephant to pass through the eye of a needle, not even a camel” than for Cambage to play for Nigeria. The first, last and only time that conversation happened was when Liz herself brought it up in 2021.

Sports / NFF: FIFPRO’s Statement Is Mere Storm In A Tea-Cup by naptu2: 2:20am On Aug 09, 2023
NFF: FIFPRO’s statement is mere storm in a tea-cup

Posted By: admin on: August 08, 2023In: Super Falcons

The Nigeria Football Federation has dismissed as nothing more than a storm in a team cup, a statement issued by the world body of professional footballers, FIFPRO on Tuesday calling on the Federation to pay players of the Super Falcons what they are owed.

The Federation reiterated that it had an earlier agreement with the players on what they would earn at the FIFA Women’s World Cup in australia and New Zealand, but world football-governing body, FIFA came up with a new template that guaranteed more money for the players and which made players of all participating teams happier.

The NFF insisted it does need FIFPRO shouting from far off to pay Nigerian players what they had been promised by both FIFA and the NFF, dismissing the body’s statement as a mere relevance-seeking message.

It recalled that its officials sat down and agreed with the players on what to pay them, but FIFA came up with a juicier package and they were all happy about it. If they had beaten England, for instance, and reached the quarter-finals, the NFF disclosed that the players would have been entitled to $90,000, and not the $60,000 each player will be getting now. A place in the semi-finals would have guaranteed at least $165,000 each (for 4thplace, and $180,000 each for 3rd place) for the players.

The Federation praised the team for its efforts at reaching the Round of 16 and standing up firmly to world number four England on the turf, as well as its heroics in the group phase. It noted that not losing a single match out of four in regulation time is a remarkable record by an African team.

The nation’s football-governing body stated that it has no issues with the players; it had assured them before the World Cup that they would be paid the couple of friendly matches and qualifying matches for which they were being owed appearance fees and bonuses respectively. It pledged to pay the money once the World Cup money is paid.

The NFF also charged FIFPRO to stop playing the ostrich and stand up to its real responsibilities, calling on the body to address the real issues. The Federation revealed that after all these years, FIFPRO does not have an affiliate body in Nigeria. It challenged the body to come to Nigeria and set up an affiliate body that can always and legitimately speak on behalf of Nigerian players, and made up of individuals who understand the culture and dynamics of the African environment.

Sports / "Pay Them": Osimhen, Ighalo Others Put Pressure On NFF To Settle Super Falcons by damilola4162(m): 12:11am On Aug 09, 2023
Some players of the Nigeria national team have thrown their weight behind their female counterpart in calling out the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to pay the Super Falcon players after their outstanding performance at the Women's World Cup.

The Super Falcons were eliminated from the tournament in australia and New Zealand after a penalty shootout defeat to England.

However, the players remain unpaid by the Nigerian Football Federation, leading to the release of a statement from FIFPRO.

“The team is extremely frustrated that they have had to pursue the Nigeria Football Federation for these payments before and during the tournament and may have to continue doing so afterwards. It is regrettable that players needed to challenge their own federation at such an important time in their careers," part of the statement read.

This has led to Super Eagles players, including Victor Osimhen, putting pressure on the NFF to settle the players.

"Pay them NFF," wrote Osimhem in response to a post by Asisat Oshoala on Instagram.

Victor Anicehe also posted:

"NFF pay them! They did us all proud! And even if they didn’t. Pay them what they are owed!!!"

Odion Ighalo, a member of the national team posted on Instagram: "NFF never stop these things."

The Super Falcons are expected back in Nigeria on Wednesday following their gallant display.

Sports / Super Falcons: FIFPRO, Oshoala And Osimhen Drag NFF Over Unpaid Salaries by tundetech4: 6:47pm On Aug 08, 2023
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is yet to pay the Super Falcons a backlog of wages despite the team’s impressive display at the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The body representing professional footballers worldwide (FIFPRO) has intervened in Nigeria’s Super Falcons' quest to get their wages from the NFF.

The NFF owes the Super Falcons players and coaches a backlog of match bonuses, camp allowances and expenses that date back to 2021.

FIFPRO urges NFF to pay the Super Falcons
The team’s current coach Randy Waldrum has not been paid for months while the players have not received bonuses in months.

There are even fears that the players may not receive the money FIFA allocated to each player at the FIFA Women’s World Cup as the world football governing body would only pay it through each team’s federation.

As a result, FIFPRO has now released an official statement, urging the NFF to pay the money the players deserve. The body released the statement on all its official social media platforms.

The statement read: Following the Nigeria women's football team's elimination from the FIFA

Women's World Cup, FIFPRO can confirm it is assisting players in a disagreement with the Nigeria Football Federation concerning bonus payments, camp allowances and expenses, some of which date back to 2021.

During the World Cup, the players expressed the desire to remain focused on their performance without making public statements or facing other distractions.

However, the Super Falcons believe that it is now time for the Nigeria Football Federation to honour their commitments and pay the outstanding amounts.

The team is extremely frustrated that they have had to pursue the Nigeria Football Federation for these payments before and during the tournament and may have to continue doing so afterwards. It is regrettable that players needed to challenge their own federation at such an important time in their careers.

FIFPRO will continue to work with the players to ensure their contractual rights are honoured and the outstanding payments are settled.

Oshoala, Osimhen call out NFF
The strong statement has elicited strong reactions from some of Nigeria’s top stars, with the team’s top player Asisat Oshoala resharing the post on her social media handle.

Super Eagles star player Victor Osimhen also jumped on the conversation by reacting to Oshoala’s post with a comment that says: Pay them @thenff with an embarrassed face emoji.

Aside from the bonuses and camp allowances, the NFF is also expected to pay the players $60k each for reaching the second round of the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The Super Falcons exceeded expectations by reaching the round of 16 after qualifying from a group that had australia, Canada and the Republic of Ireland.

The nine-time African champions played a goalless draw against Canada before a 3-2 stunning win over australia in their second match.

Randy Waldrum’s ladies then played a goalless draw against Ireland to book their spot in the round of 16.

Although they eventually lost to England on penalties in the round of 16, each Super Falcons player is entitled to receive $60k from FIFA for getting to the second round.

However, FIFA had already announced that the money would only be disbursed through the Players’ Federation.

Interviewer: The altercation with the Nigerian team. Obviously there were reports of a physical and verbal altercation between your Australian team and the Nigerian team and a report says that you called the players monkeys and told them to go back to their third world country. You have vehemently denied these reports, but there are also a group of people that say that you did say these things. Why are these stories so drastically different?

Liz Cambage: A lot of girls don't like me. I don't really lean towards racially backed insults. That's not how I go. I'm very pro-black.

Interviewer: So you maintain that you did not say these things?

Liz Cambage: I did not say these to these girls.

Interviewer: Why would something as bad as this happen?

Liz Cambage: Because the truth looks a lot worse for other organisations involved, than using me as a scapegoat. Like why does Nigeria want me to leave australia and go represent them?

Interviewer: You're saying right now?

Liz Cambage: We're filing for me to leave the Australian team so I can represent Nigeria.

Interviewer: Because Nigeria would like you to join the team.

Liz Cambage: I've been in cahoots. I've been talking with them since all of this happened. This is what I mean, people don't know the truth.

Sports / Desire Oparanozie Pleads After Missing Penalty Against England In FIFA WWC by damilola4162(m): 10:08pm On Aug 07, 2023
Super Falcon striker, Desire Oparanozie has allegedly tenderd a public apology to Nigerians after Nigeria's painful exit from the FIFA Women’s World Cup in australia and New Zealand, Newspremises reports.

Having been left on the bench in the preliminary rounds, Oparanozie was introduced during the intense Round of 16 showdown against the Three Lionesses of England.

It had ended goalless after 90 minutes, and the match headed into extra time with Oparanozie’s experience desperately needed by the African side.

The 29-year-old was brought on in the 114th minute of the encounter and could only manage three touches before the referee signalled for a penalty shootout.

England's Georgian Stanway lost the opening kick, and then Oparanozie stepped up but failed to capitalise when she also fluffed her spot kick wide.

Nigeria would go on to miss their second penalty kick after Michelle Alozie rifled her effort over the crossbar as England went on to win the tie 4-2.

It was a disappointing outing for Oparanozie, who had been with the national team since 2010, scoring 22 goals in her previous 34 matches.

After the game, she wrote:

"Sad day! Very disappointing to have lost through penalties, and even more disappointing not to have converted mine. And for this I deeply apologise."

Meanwhile, Nigerians have called on her retirement from the national team, as many singled her out for blame as the team crashed out of the tournament co-hosted by australia and New Zealand.

Sports / Nigeria's Super Falcons Bow Out Of World Cup Following Penalty Defeat To England by Antvt23: 2:54pm On Aug 07, 2023
The ongoing FIFA Women's World Cup held in australia and New Zealand has witnessed a plethora of exhilarating moments, each more captivating than the last. One such moment is the riveting showdown between Nigeria's Super Falcons and England's Lionesses. However, despite their indomitable spirit, the Super Falcons' flight in the competition has sadly come to an end.

The Nigeria national women's football team, affectionately known as the Super Falcons, showed immense heart and determination in their clash against the Lionesses. For 120 intense minutes, they held their formidable opponents to a goalless draw, showcasing defensive brilliance and tenacity. However, in the unforgiving world of football, sometimes fate has other plans.

In the nerve-wracking penalty shoot-out that ensued, the Super Falcons faltered, losing 4-2. Heartbreakingly, missed kicks by stars Desire Oparonize and Michelle Alozie proved pivotal in the outcome. On the other hand, the Lionesses exhibited nerves of steel, winning their first-ever penalty shoot-out game in the Women's World Cup.

Football, with its dramatic twists, saw the Super Falcons gain a numerical advantage when England's star player, Lauren James, was shown a red card late in the second half. Such moments can turn the tide in crucial matches, and many anticipated the Super Falcons to capitalize on this significant turn of events. But the much-desired goal eluded them, and their impressive run in the Women's World Cup met an untimely conclusion.

As England eagerly waits to discover their next opponents—either Colombia or Jamaica—the Super Falcons are set to redirect their energies. Though their journey in the Women's World Cup has ended, the road to football glory is far from over. The team will now shift their focus to the Olympic Qualifiers, a platform where they will have another chance to showcase their prowess and passion for the game.

In conclusion, while the Super Falcons' exit from the Women's World Cup is a sad moment for their fans, it's essential to celebrate their resilience, skill, and the undying spirit they brought to the tournament. They may not have taken the trophy home, but they've undoubtedly won countless hearts. Here's looking forward to seeing them soar in the Olympic Qualifiers and future tournaments.

Nothing prepared the world for the shock the Super Falcons displayed in the ongoing Fifa WC in the rounds of 16 involving the Super Falcons of Nigeria and the Lioness of England.

The game started on a high note with both teams showing brilliance and their uniqueness of play. E

The game started with Nigeria in her traditional 4-4- 2 even though sometimes the team used a fluid formation. 3-5-2 with Alozie and Plumptre inverting into the midfield giving Nigeria number superiority in the midfield

Nevertheless, the Lioness set out with her traditional 4-3-3 with the attacking trio of Dally, Lauren James and Hemp.

However, there were a few sparks of brilliance from the England team with Kiara distributing the defense-splitting passes but was stopped through the compact play from the Nigeria midfield.

The Nigerian Star looked most likely to score in the game and took the game to their English Counterpart even after the England side were reduced to 10 women following a red card to Lauren James for stamping on the back of Nigeria player Michelle Alozie. Sports / FIFA WWC: How Nigeria Can Beat England- Leo Abanikanda Olagbaiye by adefitim(m): 4:31pm On Aug 06, 2023
Dear Coach Randy Waldrun.......✍️🏿

Beating England is EASY and I mean every letter in the word e•a•s•y. Your job is not as difficult as the multitude have painted it.I have no doubt we will make England look ordinary after showing everyone how to beat them.

These are my recommendations:

1. Give a single assignment to the Midfield Maestro, Halimatu Ayinde - Cage the Lionesses' star forward Lauren James.

Have you seen matches where star players are not allowed to "breathe" before? What is simply done is to assign one DMF/Defender to the star player of your opponent.
Their only assignment will be to hold the player down, they go everywhere with the player, close marking them to ensure they do not "breathe" and by extension prevent them from playing a fluid game.

2. Let Christy Ucheibe take charge of the DMF.

Christy is no doubt a Mercenary who Marshalls the midfield effortlessly and have what it takes to command that role she was beautifully crafted for.

Lets take a sneak peek into the statistics of Miss Dependable:
Most Tackles - 18
Most Duels Won- 28
Most Chances Created- 5
Joint Most Interceptions- 4
2nd Most Ball Recoveries - 23
2nd Most Blocks - 8

Having her regular partner Halimatu being "away" on a special assignment will further bring out the fierceness in her. It is a test I have no doubt Ucheibe will pass in colours.

3. Tony Payne will take care of the Central Midfield....more work for her as she will distribute balls and also assist Ucheibe from time to time. She is our Ms. Capable and knows just how to bring "pain" to our opponents.

4. Rasheedat Ajibade who carries triple-engine already has her work cut out for her- assist the top striker and fall back to roam the midfield, assisting Payne and Ucheibe. I also believe she will work well with Alozie who keeps improving on the flanks.,

5. Kanu hasn't proven to have the engine capacity of Ajibade, she can keep up with the dangerous passes for whoever is upfront there on that day.

6. Gift Monday could be a surprise inclusion and might replace Kanu because of her speed, tricks and ruggedness. We need to wear the English girls out after 40minutes, as such, players who carry more than one engine will be very needed in this game.

7. Alozie needs little help as she has mastered how to run between the defence , midfield and attack effortlessly. Ajibade on her side of the pitch has proven to be a double combo.

8.Oshoala MUST start from the bench as we have seen her do against australia with proven results to back it up. Starting the matches have not been productive and I hope we have learnt from the past matches.

9. Desire Oparanozie should be 100% fit for this game and if she is, then she gets a starting shirt ahead of Onumonu, that way we have the desired spark upfront while Asisat can read the game to come in as a sub that will do the needed damage to our opponents.

10. Dimehin and Ohale combo is sweet to watch as they keep getting better, they will put up a fighting spirit that will keep our home secured on Monday.

11. Chi(Amaka) has not dissapointed us and we keep Faith with our Super Shot Stopper

PS:
Same England could only manage a goal past Haiti, same for Danmark at the group stages. They could only pull that stunt with a "Made in China" team.

Deborah "Kante" Abiodun's red card was unfairly extended for such a time as this but she will be back because we will beat England.

Sports / Asisat Oshoala Is The Biggest Threat To The England Team — Karen Cairney by tundetech5: 12:02pm On Aug 06, 2023
Former England midfielder Karen Cairney has said the Lionesses must be wary of the danger posed by Super Falcons star Asisat Oshoala.

Karen Cairney, a former England Women's midfielder, has warned the Lionesses to be wary of Nigerian forward Asisat Oshoala ahead of their last-16 clash.

Oshoala has been Nigeria's best player so far, despite scoring only one goal in the tournament up till this point — in the 3-2 win over hosts australia.

Oshoala can decide game for Nigeria

"She is a top-quality striker who is more than capable of pulling something out of the bag," Carney said in an interview with Powerleague.

"I expect Nigeria will have big expectations and big hopes, so we can't rest on our laurels. "Despite how good England were against China, Nigeria are a top nation that will cause us problems.

"They have a world-class striker and individual players that will be difficult for us."

Sports / Nigeria Vs England: 3 Things Super Falcons Must Do To Shock The Lioness by tundetech3: 12:14pm On Aug 03, 2023
The Super Falcons defied the odds to reach the knockout stage.
Before the Super Falcons of Nigeria kicked a ball at the ongoing Women’s World Cup in New Zealand and australia, not many football analysts expected the Super Falcons to make it out of the group stage.

Coach Randy Waldrum's side were drawn in a group dubbed the ‘group of death’ comprising Olympic champions Canada, co-hosts australia, and debutants Ireland.

Most pundits predicted a group-stage exit for the Nigerian team, obviously because they were the lowest-ranked side in the group.

However, despite having a lacklustre and abysmal preparation for the tournament, the Nigerian side showed plenty of resolve and character to come out unscratched.

With one win and two draws, the Super Falcons of Nigeria will now face a formidable opponent in England - it remains to be seen if they have enough in their tank to scale the daunting task the Lioness pose.

Head to Head: Nigeria Women Vs England Women

There would be no second chances when nine-time African champions Nigeria square up against European champions England in the round of 16 of the Women’s World Cup. It will be a winner takes it all affairs.

The Super Falcons have faced England once at the Women’s World Cup. It was during the last group game of the tournament hosted by Sweden in 1995. The Lioness emerged victorious by a slim 3-2 victory.

Both sides have met on two other occasions. England hosted Nigeria in an international friendly in Carrow Road, Norwich City, in 2002, where a Florence Omagbemi lone strike was enough for Nigeria to seal a 1-0 win.

The last meeting between Nigeria and England came in 2004, another international friendly at the Madejski Stadium, Reading. This time around, the Super Falcons were clinical despite England having the majority of possession.

Nigeria won 3-0 on the night courtesy of a goal by Rita Nwadike and a brace from Perpetual Nkwocha.

Times have changed since the last encounter between Nigeria and England, as both sides have witnessed series of changes and suffered differing fortunes.

The English side are the reigning European champion while Nigeria seems to have lost her grip on the Women’s game in Africa - despite winning the continental title a record nine times.

Pulse Sports’ Asukwo Oduo highlights three key strategies Nigeria must adopt in order to shock the Lioness of England.

1. Don’t start on the back-foot

It is very important that the Super Falcons don’t have a shaky start in this encounter with England, or else they will be punished by England’s attacking threat that put six past China in the last game.

In Nigeria’s opening three games of the tournament, the Super Falcons grew in confidence as the match progressed.

During the last group encounter against Ireland, Nigeria’s sloppy start could have been punished had captain Katie McCabe not dragged her shot wide in the opening five minutes.

The Super Falcons have to find a way to deal with England's threat in midfield marshalled by Chelsea’s Lauren James, and avoid giving away the ball with sloppy passes.

2. Hit England on the break

If the Super Falcons can maintain the gameplan they have employed in the tournament so far and hit England on the counter they can have a chance.

The team can rely on the impressive midfield duo of Ayinde and Ucheibe to mop up pressure and release out wide to Ajibade or Kanu on the flanks.

Tony Payne will also be needed to use her quick thinking on the ball to find killer passes to Oshoala -if the Barcelona forward gets the nod to start up front.

3. Be clinical

The Super Falcons would not have been in this position facing England so early in the tournament if Asisat Oshoala had taken her chance in the game against Ireland or if Kanu’s header had gone in.

Be that as it may, against England, Nigeria’s impressive backline have to defend well, something they have done well in the competition so far.

However, the Super Falcons must show intent going forward, quick transition play, and take their opportunities when it comes.

Final Thoughts

There have been enough surprises in the Women’s World Cup so far - overwhelming favourites USA were seconds away from being knocked out if the strike by Portugal in the dying seconds of their last group encounter had not hit the woodwork.

Brazil have been sent packing by the Reggae girls of Jamaica. African champions South Africa have also shocked Italy to book a place in the last 16.

The Nigerian side have enough in them to shock European champions England if they can play as a unit and take their chances. Will Nigeria send England packing? Only time will tell.

Sports / FIFA Secretary General Tells Super Falcons Prize Money Will Be Paid Directly . by Morbeta11(m): 10:10pm On Aug 02, 2023
FIFA Secretary General Tells Super Falcons Prize Money Will Be Paid Directly To Players Because Of Nigerian Government's Irresponsibility

The FIFA secretary general who addressed the Super Falcons after their 0-0 draw with the Republic of Ireland in their dressing room, noted that she knows “it has been tough” and that they had to “face the reality of Nigeria.”

The Secretary-General of the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), Ms Fatma Samoura has told Super Falcons of Nigeria that it is because of players like them that FIFA decided to pay prize money directly to players.

The FIFA secretary general who addressed the Super Falcons after their 0-0 draw with the Republic of Ireland in their dressing room, noted that she knows “it has been tough” and that they had to “face the reality of Nigeria.”

She, however, added that for the first time, the prize money would be paid to them – players – because of such realities.

“It is because of you that for the first time in the history of FIFA, the FIFA women world cup prize money will be paid directly to you, the players,” Samoura said, amid cheers from the nine-time African champions.

A former Arsenal player and football pundit Ian Wright also sent a message to the Nigeria Football Federation after the Super Falcons earned a historic win over the co-hosts of the tournament, australia on Thursday.

The Super Falcons will not be paid their tournament match bonuses, following an announcement from FIFA that all players would receive around £15,760 (AUS$30,000) for participation in the group stages of the tournament.

There were set to be separate payments following each of Nigeria's group games - against Canada, australia and Ireland - in addition to this.

The team had even threatened to go on strike for the first match of the competition against Canada who are also in the middle of a pay dispute with their own FA seeking equal pay and support with the men's team.

After a stunning win against hosts australia, Wright took to social media to send out his message of support for the Nigerians.

“Pay them!!!!!” he wrote, lending his voice to the country's continuing dispute between players and governing body.

Pay them!!!!!! @thenff 🇳🇬

It has been a debate bubbling away beneath the surface of Nigerian women's football for some time, with manager Randy Waldrum outspoken in his criticisms over the treatment of his players. His previous complaints include disagreements over unpaid wages, poor travel arrangements and the cancellation of a pre-tournament camp leading up to the Women's World Cup in australia and New Zealand. The Nigerian squad even resorted to enlisting the help of global players' union FIFPRO over the matter. “I know we are not prepared the way we need to be … I've been very frustrated with the federation and the lack of support,” he said on the Sounding off on Soccer podcast, Daily Mail reports.

“We were supposed to have a camp for 10 to 12 days in Nigeria before going to australia for another 10 to 15 days, but the federation cancelled the home camp.

“We have less days than a College pre-season to prepare for the World Cup, and it blows my mind because we've known about this since last year.” His thoughts were unsurprisingly met with disapproval from the NFF.

Federation representative Ademola Olajire called for Waldrum to 'simply concentrate on the task at hand'. However, Samoura commended the Super Falcons for progressing at the FIFA Women’s World Cup, a first-ever for an African team at the competition.

According to Samoura, their feat brought joy to women’s football as a whole with their elegance and self-assuredness on the pitch, as well as African women's football and the African girl-child. “I must say that I am proud of you. As you know, I am the first woman to be Secretary General of FIFA since the organisation was founded in 1904, and I am also an African. So, I am easily excited by any accomplishment that glorifies women’s football and African football,” she said.

The FIFA scribe who was in company with Nigeria’s leader of the delegation, Chief Felix Anyansi-Agwu and others, described the Super Falcons as the “best team of Africa”. She said their performance would inspire other African teams at the tournament. “You have won one match here, as Morocco and Zambia, but you are the only team that has made it to the knock-out stage yet.

I am also excited because when FIFA President Gianni Infantino announced my name as the new FIFA Secretary-General, I was in Nigeria working for the United Nations. So, Nigeria is a second home for me. “You should continue to believe in yourselves and play as a team, and be ready to lift the African flag higher in this tournament.

” Osasu Obayiuwana, a British-Nigerian journalist, who posted the video on Twitter, noted that Samoura had mandated FIFA’s Director for Africa, Gelson Fernandes, to ensure that the players received the money as she would be leaving soon. Samoura is leaving after seven years as the highest-profile woman working in the world football governing body. However, she will stay in the job through the ongoing Women’s World Cup in australia and New Zealand and leave at the end of the year.

Sports / FIFA To Pay Super Falcons Directly Amid Corruption Concerns by olisaelokaa: 12:05pm On Aug 02, 2023
FIFA hails players for their feats.

The Federation International de Football Association (FIFA), has said it will not be paying the Super Falcons, the Nigerian senior women's national team, through the nation’s football governing body, the Nigerian football federation (NFF).

The development is not unconnected to the controversy and corruption that have dogged the payment of bonuses and monetary benefits that the players are entitled to.

The Super Falcons are participating in the ongoing FIFA Women's world cup in australia and New Zealand. They will be facing England in the round of 16 after finishing second in group B behind the host nation, australia.

Addressing the players after their match against Ireland on Monday, the Secretary-General of FIFA Ms Fatma Samoura noted that “it has been tough” and that they had to “face the reality of Nigeria.”

She informed the players that it is because of players like them that FIFA decided to pay prize money directly to players.

She, however, added that for the first time, the prize money would be paid to them – players – because of such realities.

Recall that former Arsenal player and football pundit Ian Wright called out the Nigeria Football Federation after the Super Falcon's historic win against australia last Thursday, urging the NFF to pay them

“Pay them!!!!!” he wrote, lending his voice to the country’s continuing dispute between players and governing body.

The issues surrounding the payment of bonuses and other financial benefits to players have become an integral part of Nigeria’s national football team.

It, however, became a serious issue in Nigerian women’s football during the preparation for the FIFA women's world cup with the players threatening to boycott their first match of the competition against Canada who are also in the middle of a pay dispute with their own FA seeking equal pay and support with the men’s team.

The manager Randy Waldrum was vocal in his criticisms of the treatment of his players.

His grievances and complaints were expectedly greeted with disdain and disapproval from the NFF. Federation representative Ademola Olajire called for Waldrum to ‘simply concentrate on the task at hand’.

Sports / FIFA To Pay World Cup Money Directly To Players by 001Lagos: 7:23am On Aug 02, 2023
By Adekunle Sulaimon

World football body FIFA has announced its plan to pay prize money directly into the players’ accounts of the winners of the ongoing women’s World Cup in australia/New Zealand.

FIFA Secretary-General, Fatma Samoura, confirmed this in a viral video on social media saying the policy change is due to unpaid allowance issues involving Nigeria’s Super Falcons.

The Falcons head coach, Randy Waldrum, had earlier revealed that some players were owed “per diem and bonuses” from two years ago.

The development caused a stir and almost affected the preparation of the Super Falcon players with most of them insisting on missing the training to protest their unpaid bonuses.

However, in the video, Samoura acknowledged that “things have been tough” for the Falcons.

Waldrum not afraid of potential England clash
She added that FIFA for the first time would monitor that match bonuses got to the players directly.

“I know that things have been tough. We have to face the realities of Nigeria. It pains me a lot. It is because of you (the Super Falcons) that, for the first time, the prize money has been ring-fenced in the history of FIFA to ensure that it goes to you,” the FIFA secretary-general said.

Sports / 2023 Women’s World Cup: FIFA Backtracks From $49,000000 Promise To Women Players by FreeStuffsNG: 5:13am On Aug 02, 2023
Hours After Gianni Infantino Left World Cup, FIFA Shockingly Backtracks From $49,000,000 Promise to Women Players

The 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup expanded for the first time since its inception in 1991. A total of 32 teams are participating in the tournament that is taking place in australia and New Zealand. Moreover, eight nations are making a debut in the competition. It comes as a part of FIFA’s initiative to spread women’s soccer worldwide.

However, the recent comments of the FIFA chief have cast doubts over the organization’s commitments to improve women’s soccer. Gianni Infantino backtracked from the promise he made before the competition started. The statement might attract criticism from players amid the ongoing World Cup.

“Each individual player at the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 can now fully rely on remuneration for their efforts as they progress through the tournament,” were the words of Gianni Infantino before the World Cup started. He committed to distribute money directly to the players from the portion of the prize money. Each player was guaranteed around $30,000 for their participation.

It would have increased to $270,000 with the team’s going deep. As per the commitment, $49 million could have directly gone to the players from record-breaking $110 million prize money, bypassing the federations. Even $30,000 would have changed the lives of many soccer stars, as the average professional women player’s salary is a mere $14,000. The promise excited the players. Who would not have liked to earn that life-changing money?

But the recent words of the FIFA chief are not encouraging for the women players dreaming of getting enormous prize money. “We are moving, of course, in the right direction. We have been consulting with associations, with players, to try to go in the right path,” Infantino said. There is no mechanism by which the governing body can directly transfer the sums to the players. Also, only the federations can handle some residency and tax complications.

“We have issued these recommendations, but we have an association of associations. So whatever payments we do, we will go through the associations, and then the associations will, of course, make the relevant payments to their own players. We are in touch with all the associations,” Infantino added. Despite increasing the prize money to $110 million from $30 million, players might not get massive benefits. The statement comes hours after Infantino left World Cup in the middle, unlike FIFA Men’s World Cup in 2022.

It is a disheartening update from FIFA President amid the ongoing World Cup. It will be interesting to see how the players react to the update. What is your take on the backtracking from FIFA?

The site is for american TV channel dedicated to cricket but they also provide live and on demand streaming on their site for $15 a month. It's only available to US residents normally but with Unotelly (or if there are other DNS services that support it) it will trick it into thinking you are in the US.

Willow holds exclusive licenses and is the official broadcaster of various boards worldwide, including the Indian Premier League, BCCI (India), Cricket australia, Cricket South Africa, Cricket Zimbabwe, The Pakistan Cricket Board, The Bangladesh Cricket Board and others.

The subscription allows for live streaming on PC/MAC via their youtube channel in 1080p and all major IPTV devices like AppleTV, iPad, PS3, Roku.

I don't have a huge amount of use for this service as I have foxtel however I will definitely be subscribing to it for a month over the Australian summer to watch it live, HD and no ads instead of the crappy SD 9 coverage. Well worth $15.

Sports / Australia Emphatically Beats Canada To Reach Women’s World Cup Last 16 by ezekieloe(m): 1:58pm On Jul 31, 2023
australia is through to the round of 16 of the Women’s World Cup thanks to an emphatic 4-0 win over Canada, eliminating the reigning Olympic champion in the process.

Nigeria’s goalless draw with the Republic of Ireland in Group B’s other match ensured the Super Falcons progressed in second place, a point ahead of Canada, to reach the last 16 for the second World Cup in a row.

Hayley Raso’s first-half brace, a second-half goal for Mary Fowler and a Steph Catley penalty secured an eye-catching victory for the co-host and thrilled a raucous crowd of 27,706 inside the Melbourne Rectangular Stadium.

For Canada, this early exit caps off a brutally disappointing tournament in which the team never once looked close to its best and the manner of this meek defeat will likely leave a bitter taste for quite some time Hayley Raso celebrates after scoring the opening goal.
