Sports / 2030 World Cup To Be Hosted By Three Continents For The First Time by Spiritmask: 6:19pm On Oct 04, 2023
A unique 2030 World Cup is set to be played in Europe and Africa with the surprising addition of South America in a deal to allow the men's soccer tournament to start with a 100th birthday celebration in Uruguay.

FIFA reached an agreement Wednesday between soccer's continental leaders to accept only one candidate for hosting the 2030 tournament, the sport's governing body said.

- Stream on ESPN+: LaLiga, Bundesliga, more (U.S.)

The Spain-Portugal bid grew to add Morocco this year and now also includes longtime bid rivals Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay. All six national teams will get automatic entry to the 48-team tournament, FIFA said.

A key lure of the unprecedented three-continent project will be opening in the Uruguayan capital of Montevideo, where the Centenario Stadium hosted the inaugural 1930 World Cup final.

"The centennial World Cup could not be far from South America, where everything began," said Alejandro Domínguez, president of South American soccer governing body CONMEBOL. "The 2030 World Cup will be played in three continents."

The consensus reached by once-rival soccer continents also let FIFA fast-track the opening of the 2034 World Cup bidding contest, limited to member federations from Asia and Oceania.

Saudi Arabia has targeted the 2034 edition and australia also is interested after successfully co-hosting the Women's World Cup this year with New Zealand. Either way, the 2034 tournament will almost certainly played in November and December -- like last year's World Cup in Qatar.

Accelerating the choice of a 2034 host to the end of next year will be widely seen as a victory for Saudi Arabia and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who has built close ties to FIFA president Gianni Infantino.

"We want to celebrate our football culture and share our country with the world," Yasser Al Misehal, the president of the Saudi soccer federation and a member of the FIFA Council, said in a government statement announcing its intention to bid.

The FIFA Council's acceptance of a unified 2030 candidacy still needs formal approval next year at a meeting of the 211 member federations. That should be just a formality.

"In 2030, we will have a unique global footprint, three continents -- Africa, Europe and South America -- six countries -- Argentina, Morocco, Paraguay, Portugal, Spain and Uruguay -- welcoming and uniting the world while celebrating together the beautiful game, the centenary and the FIFA World Cup," Infantino said in a statement.

The 48-team, 104-game tournament scheduled for June-July 2030 is planned to start with games in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay before the action moves to the core host nations Spain, Portugal and Morocco.

The plan involves an unprecedented amount of travel across distances and time zones and was not popular with Football Supporters Europe, the fan group officially recognized by European soccer body UEFA.

"FIFA continues its cycle of destruction against the greatest tournament on earth," FSE said in a statement. "Horrendous for supporters, disregards the environment and rolls the red carpet out to a host for 2034 with an appalling human rights record."

The South American co-host bid has been promoted since the 2018 World Cup in Russia and had included Chile, which was not mentioned Wednesday.

Ukraine was also dropped after it was added to the European bid a year ago at a news conference at UEFA headquarters in Switzerland. However, Ukraine has not been mentioned in official comments about the UEFA-backed bid this year.

The first 48-team men's World Cup will be hosted in 2026 by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The 2030 decision marks a victory for Morocco, which has invested heavily in infrastructure in its largest cities and was last week chosen to host the 2025 African Cup of Nations. The men's national team helped push its case by reaching the World Cup semifinals in Qatar, eliminating Spain and Portugal in the previous rounds.

In a statement on Wednesday, Moroccan King Mohammed VI's Royal Cabinet said the selection "recognized Morocco's choice place in the ranks of great nations."

Sports / Unpaid Wages: Nigeria Women’s Players Speak Out 6 Weeks After World Cup by damilola4162(m): 4:40pm On Oct 01, 2023
Some Nigeria women's national team players who represented the country in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup have expressed frustrations over their treatment by the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), Newspremises reports

After almost two months after the tournament, some players who asked to be anonymous claim they have received less than half of their daily camp wages and no match bonuses.

It was further revealed that the Nigerian Women are yet to receive $60,000 (£49,000) of FIFA money owed to each player for reaching the round of 16.

Although, this is not unexpected at this stage given the time it takes for FIFA to distribute the funds.

It would recall that, just before the start of the FIFA Women’s World Cup, the super Falcons players threatened to boycott their opening game.

They eventually sealed an agreement with the NFF that players would receive a $100 (£81) daily camp allowance, a $3,000 win bonus, and $1,500 draw bonus.

FIFA later announced that each player at the tournament co-hosted by australia and New Zealand would receive a minimum of $30,000.

It was gathered that the NFF officials later denied the initial agreement, claiming the bonuses previously agreed upon were now included in the FIFA money.

A player told The Athletic:

“We disagreed, we told them ‘no’. You can’t come and tell us you’re not paying us our match bonuses… How can you tell me FIFA included your match bonus (in its money)? They take us as if we are fools, as if we don’t know anything, as if we don’t know our rights.”

Lionel Messi, Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappé lead the 12-player shortlist for FIFA's The Best Men's Player nominees, with England midfielder Declan Rice also nominated after captaining former club West Ham United to Europa Conference League success

Argentina captain Messi, now playing for MLS side Inter Miami, is aiming to win the award for a record third time having been given the honour in 2019 and 2022.

But despite helping Argentina to World Cup glory at Qatar 2022, Messi faces stiff competition from Manchester City forward Haaland after the Norway international scored 52 goals as Pep Guardiola's side completed a Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup treble last season.

Julián Álvarez, Marcelo Brozovic, Kevin De Bruyne, Ilkay Gündogan, Rodri, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Victor Osimhen and Bernardo Silva make up the shortlist alongside Messi, Haaland, Mbappe and Rice.

Spain, who won the Women's World Cup for the first time in australia last month, have four players on the 12-name shortlist for women's award with Aitana Bonmatí, Jenni Hermoso, Mapi León and Salma Paralluelo all in the race to succeed La Roja midfielder Alexia Putellas by winning the trophy.

Linda Caicedo, Rachel Daly, Kadidiatou Diani, Caitlin Foord, Mary Fowler, Alex Greenwood, Amanda Ilestedt, Lauren James, Sam Kerr, Hinata Miyazawa and Keira Walsh are also nominated, with Lindsey Horan the only United States player making it onto the shortlist.

Voting for the eighth annual awards opened on Thursday on FIFA.com and closes in mid-October. National team coaches, captains, journalists and fans make up the list of voters.

NFF mandates technical committee to open contract talks with Waldrum

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has mandated its technical committee to hold talks with Super Falcons’ head coach, Randy Waldrum, over a new contract.

Waldrum’s previous contract with the NFF expired after the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The NFF now want the American to remain on the job.

“We have given the Technical Committee the go-ahead to hold talks with Randy Waldrum as we consider an extension of his current contract with the NFF. They have to do this quickly as the team has a Women Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match next week,”NFF chairman, Shehu Gusau said on Tuesday.

“The man has done well by leading the team to an impressive outing at the FIFA World Cup.”

Waldrum was contracted by the NFF in 2021.

The gaffer guided the Super Falcons to the Round of 16 in australia and New Zealand.

The Super Falcons will take on Ethiopia in a 2024 Olympic Games qualifier next month.

NFF begins search for new Super Falcons coach after expiration of Waldrum’s contract

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has begun the search for a new head coach for the Super Falcons following the expiration of Randy Waldrum’s contract.

Waldrum led the Super Falcons to the Round of 16 at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in August.

The NFF has, however, decided not to offer the American an extension despite the Super Falcons’ impressive showing in australia and New Zealand.

Waldrum was involved in a bitter discord with the NFF in the build up to the competition.

“The NFF Board resolved to be thorough and ensure meritocracy in the composition of new coaching crews for the various Women National Teams (Super Falcons, Falconets and Flamingos) within the shortest possible time, as the Super Falcons and Falconets have crucial qualifying fixtures for major championships in a matter of weeks,” the football house said in statement following its annual general assembly meeting in Uyo, Akwa Ibom capital, on Sunday.

The Super Falcons will take on Ethiopia in an Olympic qualifier next month.

The middleweight UFC championship was up for grabs inside the Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney, australia, as New Zealand Mixed Martial Artist of Nigerian descent Israel Adesanya took on American Sean Strickland.

Dricus du Plessis was supposed to battle "The Last Stylebender" but the South African injuries took longer to heal than anticipated, so Strickland stepped in to fight for the title.

Adesanya carried on kicking his opponent's lead leg until Strickland landed a right-hand blow to knock down the champion.

Near the end of the round, Strickland dropped Adesanya with a right hand.

The 36-year-old Canadian rapper flaunted a massive $500,000 wager made on Adesanya to defeat Sean Strickland in the main event.

Drake would receive $920,000 if Adesanya were defeated but now he is trending on social media.

LACKLUSTRE ADESANYA LOSES BELT TO SEAN STRICKLAND

Sean Strickland drops Israel Adesanya with a punch in the first round of the UFC middleweight championship fight during the UFC 293 event at Qudos Bank Arena on Sept. 10, 2023 in Sydney, australia.

Sean Strickland dropped and nearly finished Israel Adesanya late in the first round of their middleweight title fight Sunday in Sydney, australia, in the main event of UFC 293.

Strickland then went on to score one of the biggest upsets in UFC history by winning a unanimous decision over Adesanya largely by defusing Adesanya’s offense. It was a jab and a right hand and a great defense that led Strickland to the win.

Judges scored it 49-46 on all cards for Strickland. Adesanya had the second round.

A blistering straight right hand dropped Adesanya hard late in the first round. Strickland was on top of him immediately and firing away, but referee Marc Goddard gave Adesanya a lot of leeway and he survived the round.

But Strickland continually marched forward, kept his guard up and never allowed Adesanya to get untracked.

When the bout ended, Strickland shouted at Adesanya and then raised his arms and sprinted around the cage in celebration.

Sports / It's Adesanya Vs Strickland In Sydney:time Of Fight, How To Watch And Location by 24Informant: 10:27pm On Sep 09, 2023
Tonight, we will witness one of the most anticipated fights of the year, as Israel Adesanya defends his UFC middleweight title against Sean Strickland in Sydney. The fight has been delayed by a week due to the COVID-19 situation in australia, which means that the fighters had to weigh in on Friday morning and wait for almost two days before stepping into the octagon. This could give an advantage to Strickland, who had a hard time cutting weight, while Adesanya looked relaxed and ready as always.

Adesanya, who was born in Nigeria and moved to New Zealand as a teenager, is a fan favourite in Sydney, where he has fought several times before. He is also one of the best strikers in the sport, with a record of 22 wins and one loss. He has been the undisputed champion of the middleweight division since 2019, when he defeated Robert Whittaker in Melbourne. He only suffered one setback in his career, when he moved up to light heavyweight and lost to Jan Blachowicz earlier this year

Strickland, on the other hand, is a wild card in this fight. He is a former welterweight who moved up to middleweight and went on a five-fight winning streak. He is known for his aggressive and unorthodox style, as well as his crazy and controversial behaviour. He has been seen punching fans who volunteered to spar with him at the open workouts, as well as trash-talking Adesanya at every chance. He claims that he has the power and the wrestling skills to beat Adesanya and become the new champion.

The fight between Adesanya and Strickland is a clash of styles and personalities, as well as a clash of time zones. It will take place at....Please check out here 👉👉 https://24informants.com/2023/09/its-adesanya-vs-strickland-in-sydney-who-will-come-out-on-top/
Sports / Israel Adesanya Vs Strickland: Time And Where To Watch Izzy Fight In UFC 293 by tundetech5: 10:12pm On Sep 09, 2023
Don't Sleep!! Wake up to watch Israel Adesanya fight Sean Strickland in the main event of UFC 293 in australia

New Zealand professional mixed martial artist of Nigerian descent Israel Mobolaji Adesanya is set for a return to the octagon.

The 34-year-old Adesanya is set to face off against American Sean Strickland in the main event of Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) 293 in australia.

Why Israel Adesanya is fighting Sean Strickland, not Dricus Du Plessis
The victor of Robert Whittaker vs. Dricus Du Plessis, the co-main event of UFC 290, was supposed to go on to face Adesanya.

Whittaker had a winning streak of 13 fights going since his victory over Mike Rhodes in 2014 before his losses to Israel Adesanya at UFC 243 and UFC 271.

Adesanya, who was sitting ringside, was ecstatic when Du Plessis overpowered Whittaker.

A win by Whittaker over Du Plessis didn't help him much because he knew he needed a new opponent and had already defeated Whittaker twice.

It didn't help that Du Plessis, a South African, had said that Adesanya wasn't "a real African," which offended the reigning champion who was born in Nigeria.

Adesanya traveled to China to fight extensively after leaving Nigeria in pursuit of combat experience before landing in New Zealand.

Adesanya entered the ring after Du Plessis had won, and the two engaged in a staredown.

The big event of UFC 293 in Sydney, australia, seemed to be Du Plessis vs. Adesanya for the middleweight championship.

Du Plessis then claimed that he couldn't compete due to a foot problem.

Only Sean Strickland remained in the top six who Adesanya had not faced after effectively wiping out the division.

Strickland, not Du Plessis, will therefore be vying for the crown on Saturday.

Israel Adesanya vs Sean Strickland build-up for UFC 293
Earlier this year, Strickland made the first jab about Adesanya being Chinese during an appearance on Joe Rogan's podcast.

However, a video showing Adesanya waving the Chinese flag quickly gained popularity on social media.

In a different video, The Last Stylebender also acknowledged embracing Chinese culture.

Israel Adesanya, who was raised in New Zealand but was born in Nigeria, spent a significant amount of his illustrious kickboxing career competing in Chinese provincial circuits where he was known as "The Black Dragon."

The reigning middleweight champion of the UFC frequently attributes his development as a fighter to his time living in China.

The jabs from Strickland don't appear to affect Adesanya; he even makes jokes about knocking him out for the sake of China.

Adesanya said that he formerly worked as a side hustle staring in Chinese advertisements.

The Last Stylebender as Adesanya is known is now expected to wear red shorts representing China against Strickland.

Adesanya is not shy to remind the world as UFC Middleweight champion that he is of Nigerian descent.

At the face-off, Adesanya came out wearing a Green and White necklace that has gone viral.

The combination of the necklace got a lot of reactions from Nigerians on social media.

There have been jabs upon jabs from both fighters as the build-up is now over.

Adesanya has stated he intends to paint his nails coming into the octagon to face Strickland.

Time and where to watch Israel Adesanya vs Sean Strickland
The fight between Adesanya and Strickland will take place early Sunday, September 10, 2023, in Nigeria.

It will be Adesanya's first defense of the UFC Middleweight crown since he recaptured it from Alex Pereira early this year.

The fight will take place at the Quodos Bank Arena in Sydney, australia.

Adesanya and Strickland take center stage in the main event of UFC 293 and their start is scheduled for 3 am Nigerian time.

It will be available on ESPN Plus and on Cable network DSTV for Nigerians.

Sports / Sacked Spain Head Coach Refusing To Leave Post - Pulse Sports by tundetech4: 10:23am On Sep 08, 2023
Despite the FA already naming a replacement, the ex-Spain boss has stated his intention to stay in the role until 2028

Dismissed Spain gaffer Jorge Vilda has said that he will fight his recent dismissal as head coach of the women’s national team despite the Spanish FA already naming a replacement for the World Cup winner.

Vilda refuses to back away from Spain national team job

Vilda was asked to leave by the RFEF’s new board shortly after guiding Spain to its maiden Women’s World Cup title with victory in australia and New Zealand due to his fractious relationship with the players, which threatened to derail their World Cup ambitions.

The new board, which took over the reins of the RFEF after the suspension of President Luis Rubiales by FIFA following the administrator’s refusal to resign for his role in the Kiss Gate scandal, saw fit to axe Vilda, despite the coach being offered a new contract by the suspended FA chief.

Vilda refuses to accept the dismissal, however, as he believes that the deal that he was offered by Rubiales, which should have lasted until 2028, is still valid.

Vilda willing to fight RFEF for unfair sacking
The World Champion has said that he will fight the termination in conjunction with his lawyers, and told Radio Marca, “I consider myself a coach until 2028. This is what my lawyers tell me and even more so when there was already a prior and consensual agreement in the Assembly,"

"In the Assembly, it was said publicly, but previously that contract had been perfected with a four-year renewal."

During Rubiales’ last general assembly as RFEF president, the now-suspended official announced that a contract would be given to Vilda, with many suggesting the head coach stood to earn €500,000 per year, more than the highest paid player on his team, Alexia Putellas earns at European Champions Barcelona.

Vilda applauded the announcement of his new contract, as well as the president’s speech declaring that he would not resign, with his behaviour now seen as support for Rubiales, and one of the reasons he was dismissed.

Super Falcons coach Randy Waldrum said he was bemused by stories making the rounds in the media that he had been sacked by the Nigeria Football Federation, noting that his contract with the country is still running, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Waldrum was appointed by the NFF in 2020 and led the Super Falcons to the 2022 WAFCON in Morocco as well as the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in australia and New Zealand.

“I’m seeing reports that I’ve been sacked but my contract doesn’t end until October 31,” Waldrum told PUNCH Sports Extra.

With the NFF yet to decide on his extension, the American is still in line to be in the dugout when the Super Falcons face Ethiopia in a Paris 2024 Olympic qualifiers between October 23-31.

Currently in the final phase of his contract, the American is still waiting to get a clear picture of a possible extension with the NFF while he has expressed his desire to lead the Falcons to the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

PUNCH Sports Extra reported that many fans also backed him to keep his job despite his soured relationship with his employers before the World Cup.

The NFF has said its technical committee will make a decision on the coach’s future soon.

Waldrum led the Falcons to a disappointing fourth-place finish at the 2022 WAFCON in Morocco, which had his credentials questioned but he won the hearts of Nigerians again after leading the team to the round of 16 of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Sports / Louis Van Gaal: 'There Was A Deliberate Intention To Make Messi World Champion' by obembet(f): 7:47am On Sep 05, 2023
Former Netherlands Head Coach Louis Van Gaal has made some damaging allegations about the 2022 FIFA World Cup that was staged in Qatar.

Lionel Messi led Argentina to their first-ever World Cup since 1986, beating the defending champions France in an energy-sapping final at the Lusail Stadium on December 18.

It was a sweet turnaround for Messi, who managed to go all the way despite watching his side go 2-1 down to minnows Saudi Arabia in their first group game. They then beat Mexico and Poland to make it through to the knockout stages.

The Albiceleste saw off australia in the round of 16, beat Van Gaal's Netherlands in the quarterfinals and thrashed 2018 finalists Croatia in the last four.

Van Gaal has, however, now claimed that the games were premeditated and lined up for Messi to complete a fairy football football.

"I don't really want to say much about it. When you see how Argentina gets the goals and how we get the goals and how some Argentina players overstepped the mark and were not punished, then I think it was all a premeditated game," said Van Gaal, as quoted by Dutch publication

Save for the final, the Argentina vs. Netherlands game was one of the games of the tournament. Lionel Scaloni's side had raced to a 2-0 lead before Wout Weghorst came off the bench to score a quickfire brace and force the game to extra time and penalties.

Sports / A Ukrainian Woman Shouted A Nationalist Slogan At The World Cup. Why Wasn't She by mailbdofficial: 7:49am On Sep 02, 2023
The World Athletics Championships took place in Budapest, where Russian athletes were not allowed due to sanctions. In the high jump sector, the victory was won by 21-year-old Ukrainian Yaroslava Maguchikh, for whom the gold at the summer world championship was the first in her career. At the award ceremony, the athlete shouted a nationalist slogan. Will she be punished for this? What other scandals are known about Maguchi?

What helped Maguchy win the World Cup
For the last few years, in the women's high jump sector, medals in major international competitions have been played out between three athletes. The winner of this fight was the Russian Maria Lasitskene more often than others - the 30-year-old athlete won everything possible: from the World Championship (2015, 2017, 2019) and the European Championship (2018) to the Olympics (2020) and the overall Diamond League ( 2014, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021).

Lasitskene’s real competitor appeared in 2019, when Ukrainian Yaroslava Maguchikh left the juniors and began performing at the adult level. The 2019 World Championships in Doha (Qatar) was remembered for the confrontation between the then two-time world champion Lasitskene and the rising 18-year-old star of Ukrainian athletics Maguchikh. Both cleared the bar at a height of 2.04 m, but thanks to the number of attempts, the Russian woman won.

From time to time, Elinor Patterson from australia intervened in the fight between the Russian and Ukrainian. She beat a Ukrainian at the 2022 World Championships in Eugene, America, where the Russian team was not allowed in due to sanctions.

There were no big victories for Maguchy before Lasitskene was suspended, except for winning the European Indoor Championships in 2021. Now, at the World Championships in Budapest, the Ukrainian has won the long-awaited gold - the only one to overcome a height of 2.01 m. Patterson and her compatriot Nikola Olislagers stopped at a height of 1.99. Maguchikh tried to jump a personal best of 2.07 m, but it didn’t work out.

Will Maguchikh be punished for his nationalist slogan?
The 21-year-old Ukrainian athlete took the first major victory in her career rather reservedly. Until she ran up to personal trainer Tatyana Stepanova and she shouted out the well-known nationalist slogan of the Ukrainians. Maguchikh supported the mentor and repeated the slogan at the awards ceremony. The episode was broadcast on television, but was not interrupted by the organizers of the World Championships in Budapest, nor by the leaders of the International Association of Athletics Federations (World Athletics).

Sanctions from World Athletics did not follow, since political slogans are not prohibited at association competitions. But if Maguchikh had done so at the Tokyo Olympics, the International Olympic Committee would probably have punished her.

Before the Tokyo Olympics, the IOC published guidelines outlining what types of athlete protests would be prohibited at the Games. Rule 50 of the Olympic Charter prohibits athletes from expressing political views during competition.

The new rules come after the US Olympic Committee reprimanded two American athletes for protesting on the medal podium at the Pan American Games in Lima. Fencer Race Imboden knelt and hammer thrower Gwen Berry raised her fist in protest. Both were given a probationary period of 12 months, a period that included the Tokyo Olympics.

In March of this year, the IOC issued recommendations on the admission of Russian athletes to international competitions. In addition to their neutral status and lack of affiliation with the Russian Armed Forces, our athletes were prohibited from demonstrating support for the North Military District in Ukraine in any way - neither at competitions nor on social networks.

What scandals is Maguchy known for?
At the Tokyo Olympics, where Lasitskene won, and Maguchih became third, there was a scandal. A Russian woman and a Ukrainian woman took a common photo with the flags of their countries - while Maria performed under the flag of the Russian Olympic Committee due to sanctions. Silver medalist of the Games Australian Nicola McDermot did not take pictures.

After that, Maguchy was criticized at home, and the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine even called her in for a conversation.

Lasitskene said that Maguchih disowned her after that incident:

“When Yaroslava Maguchikh and I hugged at the Tokyo Olympics, certain structures in Ukraine later had a conversation with her, and she wrote on her social network “the enemy does not sleep” and so on, and renounced this act and me. Then this situation was discussed for a whole month, and no one stood up - neither other Ukrainian girls, nor Sergei Bubka , no one said that this is an athlete and there is no need to insult her. Everyone was silent, as if what was happening was the norm. ”

Maguchikh later spoke about a message from Lasitskene regarding the special operation. The previously friendly athletes did not have a conversation.

“Already after the World Championships in Eugene, she wrote to me, but, you know, this is after so many of my interviews. She wrote that, of course, she was very worried about us and about this situation. But, you know, it didn’t get any easier. Five months of war have already passed. What kind of conversation can there be? - said Maguchikh.

The Ukrainian woman also said that she no longer had an idol, so she hinted at disappointment in Lasitsken. She was outraged that the Russian woman did not express support for her and did not contact her after the start of the SVO.

The National Olympic Committee of Ukraine has threatened a boycott after reports that the IOC may allow the Russians to the Olympics in Paris. Maguchikh said that “this will be a defeat for Ukraine.”

“In fact, I think boycotting the Olympics is a very weak position. We must do everything to prevent this from happening. But not to participate in the Olympic Games. This is the biggest competition that everyone who hasn't watched is watching. If there are no Ukrainian athletes there, it will be a failure, to be honest,” Maguchikh said .

Sports / World Cup FIFA Ranking: Super Falcon Coach Disagrees With Nigeria’s Position by Ashleyokeneye(f): 10:16am On Aug 29, 2023
Super Falcons coach Randy Waldrum disagrees with Nigeria’s position on post-World Cup FIFA ranking. The American gaffer has questioned the latest FIFA women’s world rankings as concerned the former African champions. In the wake of the latest FIFA Women’s World Rankings released on Thursday, Super Falcons head coach Randy Waldrum voiced his disagreement with Nigeria’s current position.

The Super Falcons achieved a historic feat by reaching the knockout round of the World Cup for only the third time in their history. Their journey ended in a nail-biting penalty shootout against eventual finalists England. Remarkably, Nigeria remained unbeaten in regulation time throughout the tournament, securing notable draws against Canada, Ireland, and England.

Their crowning moment came in a thrilling encounter against co-hosts australia, where they triumphed 3-2 in a match that will be remembered for years to come. FIFA, evidently impressed by Nigeria’s performance, maintained their status as the number one team on the African continent. However, Coach Waldrum, who also holds the position of head coach for Pitt women’s soccer, expressed his dissatisfaction with this ranking.

Randy Waldrum, renowned for his steadfast support of his team, made a name for himself on the global stage as the manager of Nigeria during the Women’s World Cup this summer. Prior to the event, he had engaged in a public dispute with the Nigeria Football Federation, highlighting issues such as delayed payments and subpar training conditions for his team.

Despite these off-field challenges, Waldrum’s unwavering support created a strong bond of trust within the Super Falcons squad, while his tactical prowess inspired the team to perform at their best in front of millions of fans. His willingness to confront the Nigeria Football Federation for improved working conditions made it clear that he would not shy away from challenging FIFA and their global rankings.

Sports / FIFA Suspends Spanish Football Chief, Rubiales Over Kissing Scandal by fergie001: 1:36pm On Aug 26, 2023
Embattled Spanish football chief Luis Rubiales has been provisionally suspended by FIFA for 90 days in the wake of the World Cup kissing row.

The 46-year-old has refused to step down despite mounting pressure from within Spanish football and the government.

He grabbed player Hermoso and kissed her on the lips during the awards ceremony following Spain's 1-0 victory over England on Sunday in Sydney, australia.

FIFA said it had suspended Mr Rubiales "from all football-related activities at national and international level".

"This suspension, which will be effective as of today, is for an initial period of 90 days", pending the disciplinary proceedings against Mr Rubiales.

Sports / Spanish FA Wants To Sue The Female Player That Was Kissed By It's President by ogbiwa: 1:24pm On Aug 26, 2023
The Spanish football federation says it will take legal action over Jenni Hermoso's comments about its president Luis Rubiales.

Rubiales has refused to resign after kissing forward Hermoso on the lips following Spain's Women's World Cup final win over England in Sydney.

Hermoso said on Friday she did not consent to the kiss, but the federation has questioned her version of events.

"The evidence is conclusive," the federation said. "Mr President has not lied."

In a statement by players' union Futpro, which is representing 33-year-old Hermoso, she is quoted as saying "in no case did I seek to raise (lift) the president" while they embraced on the podium.

The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) said: "The RFEF and Mr President will demonstrate each of the lies that are spread either by someone on behalf of the player or, if applicable, by the player herself.

"The RFEF and the President, given the seriousness of the content of the press release from the Futpro union, will initiate the corresponding legal actions."

The federation also said that, if selected, players have "an obligation" to play for the national team, after 81 female players said they will not represent Spain until Rubiales is removed from his post.

Real Betis striker Borja Iglesias has also said he will not play for the men's national team again while Rubiales is in charge.

In its statement, the RFEF provided four images of Hermoso's embrace with Rubiales, with an analysis of each, which it claims demonstrates that she applied the force to lift Rubiales' feet off the ground.

The federation says it has tried to contact Hermoso, who is Spain's leading women's goalscorer with 51 from 101 appearances, but have "been unsuccessful at all times".

How did the situation get to this point?
Rubiales' behaviour at the Women's World Cup final has drawn international criticism, with government ministers demanding his resignation.

The 46-year-old watched Spain's 1-0 win over England from the VIP area of Stadium australia in Sydney.

As he celebrated at the final whistle he grabbed his crotch, with Queen Letizia of Spain and her 16-year-old daughter standing nearby.

Then came the kiss with Hermoso, who plays her club football in Mexico for Pachuca, during the presentation ceremony.

She initially said on Instagram she "didn't like" Rubiales' actions but a later statement released on her behalf defended him.

Rubiales apologised for the kiss on Monday, but Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said that was "not enough" and second deputy prime minister Yolanda Diaz joined those calling for him to resign.

On Wednesday, Hermoso said Futpro would "defend my interests" and the union said the kiss should not go unpunished.

On Thursday, football's world governing body Fifa said it had opened disciplinary proceedings against Rubiales, and the RFEF called an extraordinary general assembly on Friday, where Rubiales was expected to resign - but he insisted he would not.

Although he apologised for grabbing his crotch, he vowed to "fight until the end" and said the kiss was "mutual, euphoric and consensual".

The Spanish government later began legal proceedings seeking to suspend Rubiales, before statements by Hermoso and Futpro on social media led to the latest response by the RFEF.

The RFEF provided analysis of four images and concluded that "the feet of Mr President are ostensibly raised off the ground as a result of the player's action"

'His ego is greater than his dignity' - reaction
Rubiales' defiant stance has been met with widespread condemnation.

Beatriz Alvarez, president of Liga F, Spain's top women's league, said: "His ego is greater than his dignity and honour.

"I think more people are going to join in but given the lack of determination of Luis Rubiales, other people are beginning to speak out."

During Saturday's game between Orlando Pride and San Diego Wave in the National Women's Soccer League in the United States, all players wore wristbands featuring the message 'Contigo Jenni' [With you Jenni].

They included USA striker Alex Morgan, who said on Friday: "I'm disgusted by the public actions of Luis Rubiales. I stand by Jenni Hermoso and the Spanish players.

"Winning a World Cup should be one of the best moments in these players' lives but instead it's overshadowed by assault, misogyny and failures by the Spanish federation."

Sports / Michelle Alozie: Coach Waldrum Made Me Smile When James Stamped On My Yansh by tundetech4: 10:53am On Aug 26, 2023
Super Falcons star Michelle Alozie explains why she smiled after Lauren James Stamped on her.

Super Falcons star Michelle Alozie has revealed her thought process during her heavily 'memed' moment, in which she was all smiles as Chelsea forward Lauren James stamped her backside.

What happened
Although Nigeria were eventually knocked out on penalties by the Three Lionesses, the Super Falcons came close to triumphing over their rivals, who were numerically inferior after James was sent off.

The former Manchester United forward was kept quiet for most of the game by the duo of Halimatu Ayinde and Alozie.

And in a show of frustration around the 83rd-minute mark, the 21-year-old stepped on Alozie as she walked over her after a tumble saw both players fall to the ground.

An aggressive reaction would have been understandable from the Houston Dash forward, but instead, the Super Falcons defender was all smiles.

Alozie explains why she smiled during the Lauren James stamps
In a conversation with Attacking Third, the 26-year-old was asked why she was calm throughout the situation.

Alozie explained that throughout the incident she kept recalling coach Randy Waldrum's warning that she risked suspension if she got another yellow card.

The Houston Dash star already picked up a yellow card in the group stage victory over australia, and two yellow cards meant a suspension at the World Cup.

She explained that she wanted to avoid the risk of missing the next game should Nigeria qualify, and she trusted that VAR would vindicate her.

"Honestly, the only thing going through my head was coach Randy telling me maybe a thousand times before the game that I have a yellow card and I cannot get another one," she said.

"So literally, in that moment, when it happened, I was like, okay, she's definitely getting a red card. So I am just going to like, chill here.

"I was like, she must be getting a red card, so I am just not going to react, because if I react, I am probably going to go crazy, get a yellow card, and potentially be out for the next game.

"I was like, VAR better have my back, and it did.

Sports / We Don't Owe You — NFF To Super Falcons As NASS Demand Payment Slips by tundetech4: 4:29pm On Aug 25, 2023
The Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, and the Super Falcons have been on a head-to-head battle about FIFA money, but the governing has now responded.

The Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, has confirmed that the Nigeria Super Falcons have been paid by the body.

Pulse Sports Nigeria can report that the President of the body, Ibrahim Gusau, revealed this during his appearance before the ad hoc committee of the National Assembly, NASS.

The lower chamber of the NASS, the House of Representatives, is investigating the non-payment of allowances and money due to Super Falcons players over the years.

Super Falcons’ pre-FIFAWWC complaints
Before the team’s brave performance at the ninth FIFA Women’s World Cup, FIFAWWC, the national women’s team complained about non-payment of their allowances amongst other things.

Led by coach of the team, Randy Waldrum, the NFF was quizzed about the 960, 000 given to Nigeria for making it to New Zealand and australia.

As reported by Pulse Sports, Waldrum opened up a can of worms which led to a war of words between him and the NFF.

“I have a real close contact in the US that is very connected and on some of the boards at FIFA. This person told me, that in October, every country was given $960,000 from FIFA to prepare for the World Cup. Where is that money?” Waldrum queried back in June.

NFF responds
Waldrum’s comments led to reactions from the NFF and Nigerians, who were appalled by the actions of the NFF.

However, the football governing body has now defended itself, with claims that they don’t owe the players.

According to a report by Premium Times, Gusau noted that the said money was meant for the preparation of the team for the World Cup, not allowances which they have also paid the team.

“All the 32 nations that qualified for the World Cup were given $960,000 each for preparation for the World Cup,” Gusau told the NASS Committee.

“In January, we organised a training tournament of four nations — Mexico, Colombia, Costa Rica and Nigeria. Every team used FIFA preparation money. The team was camped in Mexico and they were there for 13 days. In March, they were in Turkey for another training camp.

“The money was not given for the welfare of players but for preparing the team,’ he added. “We paid them allowances as per the tournament they participated in. We cannot use the preparation money to pay outstanding of qualifier matches.

“If the auditors of FIFA should see it, they will query us for that. The money was specific. We cannot use the money for a qualifier that was played in 2019,” he said.

Meanwhile, following claims by Mr Gusau that the NFF has cleared allowances including that of coach Waldrum, the House committee has demanded that the body provide payment slips and evidence dating back to 2019.
