Saw some petty negative reviews about the movie, and they were largely from Igbo people online.

Will still follow my gut and watch it.

That was how some of y'all panned "Origin: madam koi koi"!
Finally saw it, and it was AWESOME!

I honestly wish some of you movie reviewers will learn to emphatically indicate that your reviews are your subjective views or perspectives, and not facts.

madam koi koi (also known as Lady koi koi, Miss koi koi, madam High Heel or madam Moke in Ghana and Miss Konkoko in Tanzania) is a ghost in Nigerian and African urban legend who haunts dormitories, hallways and toilets in boarding schools at night, while in day schools she haunts toilets and students who come to school too early or leave school late. grin On a side note, I've often wondered how all those African myth we hear as kids come about like the infamous madam koi koi in boarding schools, India getting banned from football because they can turn balls into snakes in the eyes of the goalkeeper or Thunder Balogun shooting a ball that pierced open the stomach of a goal keeper undecided
This right here is how we make a myth out of a man, an event or a nonentity; fables from gossips, tattletales, rabble-rousers, blabbermouths and their likes
At this point our ears might be so full the future generations may grow up thinking TB Joshua was a so called prophet with two lives; a saint 😇 in the day and a devil 👿 at night. One that performs unfathomable miracles in the open and nightmarish atrocities in the dark.
Be it truth or fiction, at the pace these revelations keep coming out, the infamy of TB Joshua may become a myth in the not too distant future.

TV/Movies / Madam Koikoi Movie: Did They Spoil Our Childhood Ghost Story Or Fix It? by DyshApp: 2:40pm On Nov 21, 2023
Nigeria's film industry is on a roll, and madam koi koi is the latest nostalgia trip they're serving up. After classics like "King of Boys,' 'Isoken,' and 'Brotherhood,' the anticipation is high. Now, buckle up for a hair-raising reimagination of the spine-chilling boarding school legend - madam koi koi.

For anyone who survived boarding school in Nigeria, madam koi koi was the stuff of nightmares. The tale spins around a once-beautiful but ruthless teacher who, after being defeated by her tormented students, transforms into the infamous ghost haunting the halls of boarding schools. The only warning to her victims is the eerie click of her red-as-blood-heeled shoes.

This fresh take on the urban legend promises a terrifying twist and a dive into the unknown. Directed by Jay Franklyn Jituboh, the movie is Set in 1991. We follow a young woman and her daughter, Amanda, navigating the horrors of a small town and a boarding house. As Amanda befriends her bunkmate, ominous warnings about a group of boys set the stage for a suspenseful narrative.

The Origin: madam koi-koi: Episode 2 2023.

Almost twice as nice.....

The part 1/ episode 1 of this left things on a knife edge as it ended abruptly just as things were about to get cooking. I had some expectations for the concluding part, and i was left almost satisfied.

"The Origin" really began in this installment, and the writers showed great dexterity in unraveling why and how "madam koi koi" came to be and i have to applaud the layers and texture they added, they told the origin, going through 3 different timeline without missing a beat and i must say they did brilliantly.

But, again, some part went flat and they more or less looked like fillers, and i personally didn't see the reason they needed to split this into 2 parts, as a one part, 2hr: 30mins runtime would have sufficed. There was also some part of the plot lines that defied logic but i guess that is expected when dealing with mysticism and spiritualism.

I expected more horror too and i purposely saw this at the dead of the night to see if they could scare me, but it was still the make up gimmick albeit the eerie soundtrack added a little air of suspense and dread.

The production value was fantastic and the cinematography was top work. After sticking a wobbly landing, they then tried to insert a MCU esque post credit scene with the caption "madam koi koi has returned", and i am like, there is absolutely no reason to make any sequel to this expect it is in another universe with a different story all together.

6/10.

Final rating for the entire thing
6.5/10.

The Origin: madam koi koi Part 1/E1 (2023).

9ja boarding house most popular myth comes to life!.

A long review.....pardon 🙏🏿

I have been feeling quite overwhelmed lately that i have basically just mentally tapped out off seeing movies/series and i think i barely scraped through just about 3 movies all October, Terrible terrible form 😩, but when i saw this popular urban legend coming to the big screen i had to obliged.
Billed as a 2 part affair or episodes if you will, so i am hoping this review falls within the purview of this thread.

This first part/episode was really really good as a pace setter and i am quite surprised how well put together the writing and character development was, it clearly showed, some really serious people were in charge.

madam koi koi mythology is not a new tale, if you were born in the 70s, 80s, 90s and even to some extent, Gen Z, will totally be able to relate to it. This retelling had our central character, Amanda, changed school, to a Catholic boarding school in the fictional town of Malomo in the 90s, as she begins her sojourn in this new school, she keeps being jolted by a nightmare, of a certain unnamed horror with "a red koi koi" shoe, lurking in the shadows , and we are quickly reminded, why we are here and things are definitely not as they seem in this school and indeed the town.

I know i have praised the writing, but the acting and delivery was equally top notch, only a few known faces, but the newbies stole the show!. There was a rape scene, that was so well acted that i had to actually fast forward it at the time, because of how true to life and grossly disturbing it was! Impeccable acting!

As with Nollywood movies set in the olden times, continuity error always seems to rear it's ugly head, and i was on the look out for one, and they almost didn't disappoint, the setting, props, Clothing style fit the era it was set, being 70' to 90's. The pulled out a fresh "tortoise" car and i was wondering were they got one, so pristine lol. The students especially the girls, on first look, looked over age to play teenagers in sec school, but then again these are, how mature, girls used to look in sec school back then, i have my mum's sec school photos to confirm 😃, so props to the casting crew. The little blot, was when one character used a popular phrase that only came out in real life about 2 years ago, so there's no way it is been said in a movie supposedly set in the 90s, i voiced out my concerns to the lead actress on X (formerly known as Twitter) and she duly replied and said it was rather anachronism and not a continuity error, it seemed a rather convenient answer but i allowed it because of how good the other continuity props were.
And, also it was billed as horror, and one of the new genres Nollywood is exploring, but they are still piss poor at it, the jump scares in this were so minimal and scaled to zero, it rather made the whole thing look like a drama, but then again, horror movie makers here are still relying heavily on make up to bring that horror flair because VFX use is still alien here, and i know horror make up can be quite expensive and only few make up/costume studios offer such services, but i would really love them to up the horror ante in the next part .

Even though they already promised that it was a 2 part affair, i was kicking myself when it ended abruptly as things were kicking into proper gear.
Thank goodness the next part isn't too far away.

For now, this is a great intro that seems to stick a decent landing in what they were trying to do, so on to the next one.

7/10.
