Bee's Food Drive is a small charity that supports vulnerable people in need in Nigeria. The charity has been operating since December 2021. It buys and distributes food to people in need in Gwagwalada, Abuja.

With the ever increasing cost of living in Nigeria, the charity needs your help to support more people.

When you make a donation to Bee's Food Drive, you are eligible to apply to join Bee's Food Drive as a member.

Once you become a member of the charity, you can vote in annual general meetings, you are eligible to be voted in to become a member of the board of trustees etc etc. For further details about the benefits of becoming a member of Bee's Food Drive, please visit the following link https://bfd.shidahealthcare.org/become-a-member-of-bees-food-drive/

PropertiesRe: My Landlady Says She Will Pump Water Once Every 5days Due To Increase In Tariff. by SegilolaSalami: 10:25am On Jun 25, 2023
If the NEPA bill is ₦20k a month, if you share it equally, you should each pay ₦6700. As your usage is more, you should pay more. If your landlady lived alone and had a meter to herself, she would not have to pump water often. So the increased bill is from pumping water frequently for the tenants.

As other people have suggested, get water storage drums and fill them up with water. This is the simplest solution in my opinion.

Speak with your co-tenant and offer to pay more money towards pumping water. At the end of the day, the money goes to NEPA.

Speak with your co-tenant to discuss the implications of getting a meter that serves just the two of you. If you both come to some agreement then discuss it with your landlady. If she agrees, you can pump water as much as you want. However, if I were your landlady, I would never agree to this option.

Jobs/VacanciesRe: In Need Of A Work. Port-harcourt by SegilolaSalami: 4:35pm On Sep 25, 2022
The problem I have found with lots of people who post on social media that are looking for a job is that 9 out of 10 times, they don't post about the type of job they are seeking.

@nhp3 you have not said what type of job you are looking for. If you need help, you need to make it easy for people to help you.

So here are a few questions you need to answer if you are serious about needing a job:
1 - what type of job can you do? eg secretary
2 - do you have any previous experience in this field? eg 3 years working as the secretary of the managing director of a petrol station
3 - do you have any educational qualifications in this field? eg NECO 9 A*s including Maths, English and Data Entry
4 - why are you no longer working where you were before? eg my contract ended, I relocated to be closer to family
5 - what regions/states are you willing to work in? eg Lagos state ONLY, not open to relocating unless it is remote
6 - when can you start a new role? eg I am available to start work immediately

I hope you find these suggestions useful. Wishing you all the best in your job search

EducationRe: Growth Strategies For Schools by SegilolaSalami: 12:12am On Mar 07, 2020
Very well written article, thank you. What I would have liked to see more of is how to effectively advertise and promote a new school initially

cole265:
An overall goal for school growth should be aimed at achieving the school’s vision and mission statements. It is noticed recently, that most well meaning school’s vision and mission statements are obviously directed towards producing and developing confident, well rounded, successful global citizens. This surely is a desire of the 21st century education.
School proprietors’ growth strategy should therefore start with working earnestly and vigorously towards advertising and achieving their laudable vision and mission statements. Success in the advertisement will attract the fancy of the majority (prospective parents and students) who will show interest in knowing if the school can “work the talk” or is “working the talk”.
Growth strategy for schools should therefore hinge on:-
i. Advertisement: to attract the majority (Prospective parents and students).
ii. Achievement: demonstrating the ability to “work the talk” (to live the vision and mission statements)
Advertisement and consolidation strategies: (continuous but more intense in the first and second year)
• Attend and participate corporately in most education fairs locally and abroad
• Adopt and partner with lots of upcoming and established primary schools.
• Attend or be represented at primary school’s graduation, founders’ day, sports day etc. prizes and awards could be donated in the name of the school. (…for secondary school owners)
• Make contributions and statements to topical national and international issues, especially on education.
• Host educational events and activities such as sports, cultural displays, debate and quizzes on the school ground that will attract lots of visitors to the school.
• Hire out school facilities for corporate groups, society or associations to organize events such as interviews, examinations, meetings, tutorials, etc
• Become very active in the AISEN (Association of International School Educators in Nigeria) sports, cultural and other activities.
• Organise school trips within and outside the country
• Participate and register students for competitions in all areas of education within and outside the country.
• Partner with various associations of Nigeria communities all around the world. Attend their functions.
Achievement and consolidation strategies: (starts from the first year and is intensified through to the fourth year)
Growth strategy with regards to achievement is categorized into four key areas. Each category is detailed into developing the various related topics as listed below.
• Pupils / Students:
i. Admissions: - a well structured admission system with a full school enrolment for all classes.
ii. Behavior: - create a code of conduct which will set very high standards of behavior for pupils.
iii. Welfare:- ensure the safety and wellbeing of all pupils
iv. Administration / records:- develop the effective management of pupils and the administration of pupil records
v. Boarding: - ensure the success of the hostel boarding arrangement

• Programme / Curriculum
i. Core instruction and Assessment:- each subject should be organised and structured to ensure compliance to the school’s policy of standardisation
ii. Support and Extension: - to develop a coherent and effective subject led intervention and improve provision for students with learning variances.
iii. Learning areas:- each subject will be motivated to be the expression of the vibrant curriculum
iv. Promotion, retention and rewards: - to ensure pupils highest levels of achievement is attained.
v. Co-curricular: - to fully develop pupils’ skills, values, capacities and interest beyond the classroom.

• Physical building / Facilities
i. Buildings: - ensure that the buildings and the facilities are clean, functional and aesthetically pleasing.
ii. Facilities and resources: - to establish refurbishment and improvement of teaching and learning centers.
iii. Transport: - ensure the functionality, safety and aesthetics of the school transport system

• Personnel / Manpower
i. Employment practices: - develop strategies to recruit and retain high quality staff
ii. Job descriptions: - create clear job roles and lines of accountability
iii. Employee disciplines and rules: - ensure that the conduct of all staff is exemplary to the pupils and the community.
iv. Employee Appraisal policy: - develop a rigorous appraisal system
v. Staff development: - to offer staff high quality, relevant, continuous and professional development

COMMON MISTAKES WHICH SCHOOL OWNERS MAKE WHEN STARTING THEIR SCHOOLS
The proprietors of schools make certain mistakes from their start up point, which makes it seem they are ill-prepared for the task of owning a school. These edupreneurs as I call V them do not make certain to establish the basic principles that make running a school simple. And because they have failed in this aspect, it becomes mistakes! The essence of this is to identify the mistakes and find solutions to them. For many proprietors, the first start up mistake they make is in their:
1. School names and motto.
Like every business venture, the name a school adopts is extremely vital but far more important is the school motto and or slogan. Over time, what you see edupreneurs adopt as school motto is the Francis Baron adage that ‘’knowledge is power’’ and other conventional quotes like ‘’knowledge is light’’ and ‘’education is the best legacy’’ to me, those kind of names does not mean well for a schools that has foresight. Your school motto must tell something about your ideal, zeal and the vacuum you wish to fill.
2. Vicious cycle mentality.
This might surprise many of the edupreneurs but it’s a simple truth. Most of the primary and secondary school owners today, are/were school teachers, having taught in one government/private school or the other. This means that most of the schools in existence are based on teaching methods as evident in their names like montessori’s method boldly written on their signboards when these proprietors know fully, that the Montessori method is mainly applicable to only toddlers in the pre-nursery or nursery schools. The academic history of these proprietors and their teachers, have always shown that most of them went to colleges of educations and universities to obtain educational qualifications. This means they are trained to teach and not to own schools, just as many Nigerian graduates are trained to be job seekers and not job creators. As it were, most of them are trained to be teachers and not business managers. Hence, do not have the capacity to manage the man, methods, materials and money of the school. Because most proprietors come into the school business with just teaching methods, they have nothing different to offer… no innovation, no new thoughts as they remain in the same vicious cycle. I can therefore boldly say, most of the small schools in existence are built on teaching methods.
3. Meet The wrong man approach
Another actual mistake which proprietors make is going to meet a proprietor to educate them on how they started the same kind of business that they are about to go into. The truth is, no matter how sincere a proprietor is, he /she will never tell you his secret of making more money or increasing population, rather they will just tell you what you need to know and not what you need to break even or stand out.
4. Low price mistake
Just like most start up problems, most proprietors start their schools with ridiculously low school fees because they want to get many students enrolled. When they eventually get the students, they try increasing the school fees and end up losing the students. But by then, they would have got teacher’s salaries to pay, government tax, union levies and other sundry running cost to deal with. This in the end make them constantly struggling. If you must start a school, start with the right price that should not be change until three or four years after existence.
5. The only one wow.
In cracking the millionaires code, the author created an acronym for WOW, which means wheels of wealth. To the proprietors, many start schools and depend 100% on the school for survival instead of creating other sources of revenue either within the school or outside the school.
6. Aristotle,
…and though it does not end then…

There are so many other mistakes or in this case factors to consider before starting a school. All these suppose mistakes stated here are first hand information garnered from on the field work, working with proprietors of schools of various levels. And over the years, we(GENIUSKROOL) have been able to create innovative solutions to help proprietors over-come these challenges.
Synopsis
A mistake is not a mistake until you refuse to learn from it, improve on your short comings and make amends. It’s not a crime to make mistakes, but it is a crime not to learn from.
There are people whose business is to see to the need of your business and that is what GENIUSKROOL stand for…seeing to the need of your school business, I mean, any school business. If you have made any mistakes in your school or you are facing any management challenge in your school. We are just here for you.

This is definitely a welcome development but I think anyone who can support the government's efforts should do so.

With my little capability, I've launched the Segilola Salami Preparatory School in Abuja. It's a skills acquisition business school for children aged 6 to 14. To ensure that the school is accessible by more people, I'm running a program where the up to 50% of the tuition fees can be offset by recycling plastic bottles and cardboard boxes.

The most exciting thing for me about the school is that the students will graduate with more knowledge about business than I could have imagined as a child myself.

Anyhoos, you can find out more information about the school here https://www.school.segilolasalami.co.uk/
