PoliticsWhy Nigerians Can’t Pronounce “nigeria” Correctly by senier007(op): 6:14am On Mar 20, 2016
The only Nigerians who pronounce the name of their country "correctly" are foreign-born Nigerians—or Nigerians who were socialized outside their country, or whose exposure and education cause them to be guarded and self-conscious about their pronunciation. It was a non-Nigerian who first called my attention to this over a decade ago.

The name “Nigeria,” as most people know, isn’t native to the languages spoken by the people who populate the area; it’s an anglicized Latin word that denotes blackness. It traces lexical descent from the Latin “niger,” which means “black” or “dark,” and shares etymological affinities with the obnoxiously negrophobic racial slur, “Nigger.”

The name emerged when British colonizers named the longest river that courses through our country “River Niger.” Before British colonizers called it River Niger, precolonial Nigerians called (and still call) it by different names. For instance, Baatonu people in Kwara State (and Benin Republic) call it “Kora,” Yoruba people call “Oya,” Hausa people call it “Kwara,” Igbo people call it “Orimiri,” and so on.

When it came time to name the polity that British colonizers cobbled together, they decided to name it “Niger area,” in honor of River Niger. “Niger area” was later shortened to “Nigeria.” In essence, Nigeria means “dark area.” With such a name, is it any wonder that constant, reliable electricity has eluded Nigeria since independence? We are writhing under a primal appellative curse!

Well, that was a joke! A country’s name has no bearing on the incompetence of its leaders.

Seriously, though, the British people who imposed the name “Nigeria” on us don’t pronounce it the way we do. In a March 31, 2013 article titled “More Words Nigerians Mispronounce,” I called attention to the pervasive mispronunciation of “Nigeria.” I wrote:

“It is perhaps the biggest irony of our ‘nationhood’ that almost no Nigerian pronounces the name of our country ‘correctly.’ Last year, I’d planned to write an article on the imperative to change Nigeria’s name to something other than Nigeria, and part of the argument I wanted to advance was that the name ‘Nigeria’ is so foreign to us that almost no Nigerian pronounces it correctly. One of my readers brought this to my attention again three weeks ago. He pointed out that even President Goodluck Jonathan doesn't pronounce Nigeria correctly.

“Well, there are regional and ethnic variations in the way ‘Nigeria’ is pronounced in Nigeria. While Hausa people pronounce Nigeria ‘naa-je-riya,’ the rest of the country pronounces it like ‘nan-ji-ria.’ Many language groups in southern and central Nigeria that don’t have the ‘j’ sound in their languages either pronounce it ‘nan-ye-ria’ or ‘nan-ge-ria.’ The British people who imposed the name on us pronounce it ‘nai-jee-ree-a.’ So do Americans and other native English speakers.”

NAI-JEE-REE-A. That’s how almost all non-Nigerians, including non-native English speakers, call Nigeria. Why are Nigerians the only people who don't "correctly" pronounce “Nigeria”? Well, before I answer that question, I should point out that Nigerians aren’t the only people who mispronounce the name of their country. Sierra Leoneans, for instance, pronounce Sierra Leone as “Salone” instead of “see-era-lee-own.” (The name “Sierra Leone” isn’t native to the people who live their; it’s derived from "Serra Leoa," which is Portuguese for “Lioness Mountains”). Most West Africans pronounce it “sira-li-on.” When Sierra Leoneans, who were returnee ex-slaves from the West, first immigrated to Yoruba land in the 1800s, Yoruba people called them “Saros,” as a result of the elision of “Sierra Leone.” (Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, the mother of Fela, is descended from the “Saros.”)

Uneducated, rural white Americans (derogatorily called “rednecks” here) also habitually elide the “a” in “America” to say something like “Murica” or “Merica.”

But in today’s column I am concerned with the mispronunciation of “Nigeria” by Nigerians. Why can’t Nigerians pronounce Nigeria as “Nai-jee-ree-a”? I attribute this to the effect of the “intrusive N” in Nigerian English pronunciation. So what is the “intrusive n” and how does it manifest in Nigerian English pronunciation?

The “Intrusive N” in Nigerian Pronunciation
I borrow the concept of the “intrusive N” from a linguistic phenomenon in English called the “intrusive R,” which is defined as the addition of the “r” sound (usually at the end) to words that don’t normally have it.  For example, some people pronounce “law” as “lawr,” “saw” as “sawr,” “idea” as “idear,” etc.

A 2006 study found the “intrusive R” to be prevalent among British newscasters. This is ironic because standard British pronunciation (also called Received Pronunciation) is non-rhotic, that is, it does not articulate the “r” in words unless the “r” appears in the beginning of a word, so that “tuna” and “tuner” sound alike, and “lad” and “lard” almost sound alike. Standard American English pronunciation (also called General American), on the other hand, is rhotic, that is, the “r” sound is always pronounced wherever it occurs in a word.

The intrusive N, to be sure, isn’t unique to Nigerian English pronunciation. In a 1915 article in the Modern Language Notes journal titled “Intrusive Nasals in English,” Louise Pound noticed it among native English speakers in England and America in words like “Anthens” instead of “Athens”; “balland” instead of “ballad”; “cementary” instead of “cemetery”; “daintaive” instead of “dative”; “incindent” instead of “incident”; “trinkling” instead of “trickling”; and so on.

Among native English speakers, the “intrusive n” occurs mostly in the speech of children, typically children between the ages of 2 and 9, who outgrow it as they get older. However, it has been fossilized in such words as “messenger,” which was originally “messager” (from “message”); “passenger,” which was originally “passager” (from “passage”); “harbinger,” which was originally herbergere; and so on.

In Nigerian English pronunciation, the “intrusive n” occurs chiefly in these words: attorney, covenant, expatiate, Nigeria, sigh, and witch. There may be more, but these are the words that come to mind now.

“Attorney:” It was one of my American friends who first called my attention to the way Nigerians pronounce this word. She told me every Nigerian she has met (and she has met quite a lot) pronounces “attorney” as “antoni,” especially if it appears in the term “attorney general.” I am guilty of this, too, especially in my unguarded moments. I don’t know what is responsible for the intrusive “n” sound in the general Nigerian pronunciation of the word. It’s probably because of the false attraction of the name “Anthony” and because we prefer “lawyer” to “attorney” in our everyday speech and therefore hardly have a reason to observe the absence of “n” in the word.

“Covenant:” This everyday word among Nigerian Christians is often pronounced with an “n” after the “o,” that is, as “con-ve-nant.” It’s properly pronounced “co-ve-nant.” The intrusion of the “n” sound in the word may be due to the influence of similar-sounding conversational words like “convenience,” “convene,” “convener,” etc.

“Expatiate:” There is usually an intrusive “n” sound when Nigerians pronounce this word. It often sounds like “eks-pan-shi-yeyt.” But native speakers pronounce it like “iks-pey-shee-eyt.” This is most probably because of the influence of words like “expand” and “expansion.”

“Sigh:” Native speakers pronounce it “sai,” but many Nigerians pronounce it “sain,” perhaps because the word almost looks like “sign,” which is pronounced “sain.” I am also sometimes guilty of mispronouncing “sigh” as “sain.”

“Witch:” Nigerians pronounce this word as “winch,” especially in Pidgin English.  Pastor David Oyedepo infamously slapped a young girl on television for saying, “I am winch for Jeeezus!”
So next time a Nigerian calls Nigeria “nan-ji-ria” instead of “nai-jee-ree-a” know that it is the “winch” of English pronunciation that intruded into his nasal cavity and forced an unneeded “n” sound.

It is worth point that the only linguistic group in Nigeria that seems to be immune from the “intrusive n” phenomenon are the Afemai- or Etsako-speaking people of northern Edo State (that is, in Auchi and surrounding areas) who appear not to have the “n” sound in their native language. That’s why when they speak English, they come across as suffering from a nasal blockage; they talk like people who are breathing through their mouth, instead of through their nose, which causes the “n” sound to be totally subdued or eliminated. Listen to Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole if you have never heard anyone from northern Edo State speak English.

Finally, it is interesting that while it is almost impossible for the average Nigerian to say “nai-jee-ree-a,” Nigerians have no trouble correctly pronouncing “Niger,” the root word of Nigeria. Almost no Nigerian pronounces Niger as “Nanja”; we all say “nai-ja.” Similarly, no Nigerian has trouble with “Naija,” the affectionate, colloquial short form of Nigeria, which is particularly popular among young Nigerians on the Internet

Simple, take a test with "sensitivity" test, the sensitivity test will determine the best meds for you which may be different from another person, staph aureus is very stubborn or what meds student call MRSA it is almost resistant to almost all antibiotics; one question, is your staph associated with UTI? Is there a contamination of staph in your fluid? Is the fluid watery or smelly? To cure staph you need non stop antibiotic for almost a month or more than that, don't ever go for herbal! Don't ever go for Herbal! Most herbal takes more than six month to cure according to there experts. STAPH is not an ST, even if you sleep with your wife it will not affect her but your fluid will be weaker with low mobility and sometimes acidic hence will not allow the fluid to reach the egg or the man will be infertile.
Staph is either scanty, moderate or high; the stage will determine the next line of action.
Hope that helps.

PoliticsBuhari’s Corruption War May Not Suceed If Jonathan Isn’t Prosecuted – AFP by senier007(op): 2:57pm On Mar 05, 2016
Agence France-Presse (AFP) has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to prosecute his predecessor, ex-president Goodluck Jonathan, for corruption, if he wants his anti-corruption war to succeed.

While acknowledging the fact that many people have been put on trial for corruption, the news agency noted that the anti-corruption efforts may not be productive if Jonathan was not brought in as a key witness to testify against those standing trial.

The European news agency wrote that: “It would be easy to believe that Nigeria’s President, Muhammadu Buhari is winning the war against corruption since his landmark election victory nearly a year ago. Hardly a week goes by without the country’s anti-graft agency announcing new arrests and investigations to add to the prominent politicians already in the dock.”

“But the longer the cases already brought to court drag on, the clearer it becomes that a potential setback could prevent Buhari from securing the convictions he has promised and Nigerians demand.”

“The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has not implicated the former head of state in any of its ongoing investigations.”

“But his glaring absence is increasingly posing problems for state prosecutors as the preliminary stages of cases are heard in court and trials get under way.”

While citing the ongoing trial of Olisa Metuh, PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, AFP stated that: “He was only acting on Jonathan’s orders and last week argued he should be acquitted because the former president has not been called to the stand.”

In a similar vein, the agency cited the trial of former National Security Adviser, Colonel Sambo Dasuki, of the infamous Armsgate scandal.

“One lawyer working for Sambo Dasuki, Nigeria’s former national security advisor, has also hinted at pursuing a similar defence.”

“Dasuki, who is accused of diverting the weapons procurement cash through his office via bogus defence contracts, has himself said he was only doing the bidding of the then-commander-in-chief – Jonathan”

AFP added that: “Buhari has previously warned the country’s monied elite it was no longer business as usual, but with Nigeria in economic crisis as a result of the collapsing price of oil, analysts say Buhari can ill afford to alienate Jonathan and his allies, even if it threatens success in court.”

Following the alleged abduction of 14-year old Ese Oruru from her home in Bayelsa State by one Yinusa, alias Yellow, who purportedly converted her to Islam and forced her into marriage, the Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II, has sent a letter to the Assistant Inspector General of Police, AIG, in the state, ordering her immediate release.

The Emir ordered the state Sharia Commission to work closely with the office of the Assistant Inspector General of police, zone 1, Bayero University Road, Kano, to ensure the repatriation of the abducted girl back to Bayelsa.

Reacting to the abduction of the teenager, he said “I have ordered the Sharia Commission to liaise with the office of the Deputy Inspector General of police zone 1 to repatriate and reconcile the teenager with her family immediately.”

This came after former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, reached out to the Emir over the abduction.

The Emir, reacting to reports that he was obstructing the release of Ese, forwarded copies of the letters he had sent to AIG- Kano to return Ese to AIG in charge of Bayelsa police command, who will in turn return her to her parents.

Ezekwesili, on her Twitter handle @obyezeks, posted the Emir’s letters which reads thus:

The letter dated 7/9/2015 signed by Chief Executive Officer Administration of the Kano Emirate Council, Hamisu Garba Diso and addressed to the AIG, read in part: “I am directed to introduce to you a representative of Kano State Sharia’a Commission as well as A’isha Chuwas and her relatives for proper handing over of the said A’isha to the AIG Bayelsa State based on Law and Order, purposely to protect her dignity and religion.

TravelFG To Establish National Carrier by senier007(op): 6:22am On Feb 29, 2016
Nigeria has commenced discussions on partnerships towards establishing a national airline for the country, according to the Presidency.
The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina, said this in a statement issued yesterday from Qatar where President Muhammadu Buhari is currently on a state visit.

He, however, did not provide details of the proposed national carrier.
The minister of state for aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika, had said in Abuja earlier this month that President Buhari had set up a committee for the establishment of a national carrier even before appointing his ministers.
Adesina also stated that Nigeria and Qatar yesterday in Doha signed the Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) to pave way for direct flights between major cities of both countries.
He said Sirika signed on behalf of Nigeria while Qatar’s Minister of Transportation and Communications, Jassim Bin Saif Alsulaiti, signed on behalf the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim Bin Hammad Al-Thani.
He said the agreement which was signed in the presence of both leaders was expected to operate on the principle of reciprocity by the designated airlines on behalf of the countries.
Adesina said it was also expected that the agreement on the bilateral air service would promote trade, commerce and tourism between the two countries.
He further stated that on the sideline of Buhari’s state visit, Nigeria and Qatar also signed an agreement on avoidance of double taxation and tax evasion.
He said Nigerian Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, signed the agreement for the avoidance of double taxation and the prevention of fiscal evasion with respect to taxes income with her Qatari counterpart, Ali Shareef Al Emadi.

PoliticsPresidency Unveils Buhari’s Economic Team by senier007(op): 7:08am On Feb 27, 2016
The Presidency has disclosed that President Muhammadu Buhari has an economic management team. The Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President on Media and Publicity, Mr Laolu Akande, disclosed this in a telephone interview with our correspondent last light.

Akande was reacting to a media report that quoted some economic experts as urging the president to form his economic team. According to him, the economic team of President Buhari has been put in place since the inauguration of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) last November.

Akande said the economic management team is headed by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.  He listed the team’s key members as including the Minister of Budget and National Planning, Senator Udoma Udo Udoma; the Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun; the Minister of Trade, Industry and Investment, Okechukwu Enelamah; the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godswin Emefiele; and the Director-General of the Debt Management Office (DMO). He said the composition of the team was not static as Agriculture Minister Audu Ogbe and Information Minister Lai Mohammed as well as relevant permanent secretaries have also been involved.

The vice president’s aide said the team had since been meeting and engaging representatives of the private sector.

He noted that unlike what obtained in the past, Buhari’s administration did not make anybody from the private sector a member of the economic management team.

The vice president’s spokesman also exclusively told our correspondent that President Buhari had appointed Dr. Oluyemi Dipeolu as his Special Adviser on Economic Matters.  He said the economic adviser, who was until his appointment in January a director in the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), has been working with the economic management team.

PoliticsAnti-saraki Senator, Marafa, Spits Fire, Calls Senate Memebers "Undistingushed" by senier007(op): 6:26pm On Feb 23, 2016
Kabiru Marafa, an All Progressives Congress Senator and the most vociferous critic of the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, in the upper legislative chamber, has denied shunning the Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions asked to probe him for allegedly disparaging the Senate.
Two senators, Isah Misau (APC-Bauchi Central) and Matthew Urhoghide (PDP-Edo South), brought complaints against Mr. Marafa, saying the Zamfara Central Senator had in a February 7 Punch publication demeaned the Senate.
But Mr. Marafa did not attend the hearing of the committee scheduled for Monday.
Mr. Marafa, speaking to PREMIUM TIMES on Tuesday, said his colleagues lied against him and explained that no invitation was extended to him to appear before the committee on Monday.
He, however, said he had earlier on February 16 received invitation to a hearing of the committee scheduled for February 18, but that he replied that he could not make it to the hearing.
He said he requesting another date this week.
The February 16 invitation letter, obtained by PREMIUM TIMES, referred Mr. Marafa to the said interview in the Punch “which Senators and the entire Senate believe is an infringement on their privileges.”

“Yes I got the text from the clerk to the committee but replied I would not be able to attend the meeting because I was in Kaduna commiserating with my brother and friend spanning over 30 years, Senator Hunkuyi who lost his mother,” Mr. Marafa said.
“I also called my office to ask my SA (Senior Legislative Assistant) to formally reply the invitation letter; explain why I would not attend the meeting and ask for another date.”
We also obtained a copy of the reply signed by Mr. Marafa’s assistant , Abubakar Ahmed, and dated February 17.
The letter explained that Mr. Marafa could not attend the meeting because he “is currently out of town to condole with Senator Suleiman Othman Hunkuyi, who lost his mother yesterday. He is therefore unavailable for the hearing scheduled for tomorrow, Thursday 18th February 2015.”
“He is however expected back in Abuja on Saturday, and is available for the hearing fixed for any date next week, please,” Mr. Marafa’s letter added.
As far the hearing held yesterday was concerned, there was no invitation, Mr. Marafa said, challenging the committee to publicize “invitation letter asking me to appear before the committee on Monday, apart from the first one last week which I replied and formally gave reason why I would not attend.”
“The behaviour of committee members is very undistinguished; they caused the Senate embarrassment by concocting lies against one of their own.
“That’s why I went to plenary today to see how they will pass judgement without hearing me. I deserve to be heard. Even the Senate President who is facing criminal charges is given right to defend himself.
“They can’t face me; they are afraid. They know the illegalities they have committed. I read the said interview again and I wish to stand by everything I said. I am defending the institution of the Senate,” Mr. Marafa said.
He added that even though his lawyers asked him not to attend the hearing because he was challenging the legality of the committees in court, he wanted to attend for two reasons.
“One, I have respect for the Senate institution to which I belong; so, I want to defend myself and save the Senate from embarrassment. Two, I have respect for the committee because I served in that committee for four years.”
On why he refused to convene a budget defence hearing of his committee on National Population Commission, he said his decision was based on the ‘logic’ of Senate spokesperson, Aliyu Sabi.
He said when he questioned the legality of the committees raised from 57 to 65 “in violation of Senate Standing Orders”, Mr. Sabi told him that “by approving votes and proceedings of the day the list of the committees was read, the whole Senate had approved the increment.”
“So, when the budget bill was read for the first and second time, we passed votes and proceedings of those days.

Following same logic as established by the Senate official spokesperson, it follows that we have passed the budget.
Then, why do we have to invite the MDAs again? Why do I have to waste taxpayers’ money on hearing again? Then, why is it that it is after Supreme Court judgement on Saraki they are saying they can’t pass budget? You journalists, should ask questions.”
Meanwhile, Samuel Anyanwu, Chairman of the investigative committee laid the report on Mr. Marafa’s probe before the Senate today.
The report is yet to be considered.

PoliticsArms Deal: EFCC Detains Badeh by senier007(op): 6:47am On Feb 09, 2016
Former Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) retired Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh was yesterday evening detained at the Abuja Head Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Daily Trust gathered that the former Chief of Defence Staff honoured an EFCC invitation to explain acts of financial crimes allegedly perpetrated  while he was both Chief of Air Staff (CAS) and Chief of Defence Staff (CDS).

EFCC sources said Badeh arrived the Abuja head office yesterday evening where operatives of the anti-graft agency commenced quizzing him on alleged involvement in the arms procurement scam in the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA).
Badeh topped the list of both former and serving military officers recommended for further investigation by a Presidential audit report investigating arms procurement in the military from 2007 to 2015 as directed by President Muhammadu Buhari.
Badeh had appeared before EFCC investigators last week Wednesday.
Daily Trust also gathered that the EFCC ‎still have the former Chief of Air Staff (CAS) Air Marshal Adesola Amosu two weeks after his arrest.
It was gathered that the Commission has over the period obtained holding charges from Courts in order to keep him beyond the stipulated 48 hours before arraignment.
Daily Trust learnt that most of the officers detained and questioned on the list provided by the Presidential committee have been released after making their statements.
Those still in detention, including Amosu are said to have made statements that require response and clarification by the former CDS.
It was gathered that statements obtained from the military officers led the EFCC to deploy its operatives across the country, sealing property and assets linked to the arms fund.

Politics#dasukigate: Buhari Associate, Jafaru Isa, Returns N100million To EFCC by senier007(op): 9:55am On Jan 11, 2016
A former military governor of Kaduna State and chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress, Jafaru Isa, has refunded N100million of the N170 million he allegedly received from embattled ex-NSA, Sambo Dasuki.

Mr. Isa, a retired brigadier-general, was arrested on Wednesday by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, at his Asokoro residence in Abuja.

Mr. Isa, a political associate of President Muhammadu Buhari, was grilled for several hours in connection with about N170 million he received from Mr. Dasuki.

A reliable source familiar with the matter told PREMIUM TIMES the APC chieftain and member of the 19-man Buhari Transition Committee was released after refunding N100million to the anti-graft commission.

The source said Mr. Isa pledged to return the remaining N70million soon.

“We let him go after returning the sum of N100million. We are expecting him to return the rest soon,” the source said.

According to him, some of the suspected recipients of the slush funds who claimed they had no idea the money sent to them was taken from the public till were handed opportunities to return what they got from the former NSA but refused.

“We offered them the chance of returning the money honorably but they keep deploying tactics to avoid prosecution, while also going away with the loot,” he said.

A close associate of Mr. Isa told PREMIUM TIMES that Mr. Dasuki lodged over N100 million into Mr. Isa’s account in instalments to buy a house, located on Mohammed Mohammed Avenue, Kano, for the former NSA.

PREMIUM TIMES gathered that deposits were in turn made by Mr. Isa to the owner of the house, Ali Tukur, in two instalments.

However, the house purchase deal collapsed as a former Minister of Finance, Yarima Ngama, reportedly offered to pay the sum of N150 million cash when Mr. Dasuki reneged on the payment agreement.

Those familiar with their relationship say Messrs. Isa and Dasuki have been close friends since their cadet days at the Nigerian Defense Academy (NDA) and had spent four years together while on military training in the United States.

The Peoples Democratic Party had on Sunday protested the release of Mr. Isa barely eight hours after his arrest while its own spokesperson, Olisa Metuh, remained detained.

The PDP, in a statement signed by its National Legal Adviser, Victor Kwon, said there could be no clearer indication that the APC-led administration was on a manhunt against PDP leaders, and that it had a personal grudge against Mr. Metuh, ostensibly for his stance as opposition spokesperson, particularly his recent exchange with the government and the APC over their dictatorial activities.

““The release of Jafaru Isa, a known associate of the President and chieftain of the APC eight hours after his arrest while our spokesman remains in detention even when the two are being investigated over the same allegation clearly shows that the President Buhari-led APC government is not fighting corruption but using the much hyped crusade as a cover to persecute PDP leaders and decimate the opposition, a project the EFCC has clearly yielded itself as a willing tool,” the statement said.

Like Father-like Son fits what's is happening now in lagos, Tinubu's regime was characterised by insecurity and state sponsored tout, that time, you hardly pass a day without seeing dead body on the major high ways, security was at it lowest, there was sense of insecurity and fear all over the state, but through out Fashola's regime there was sanity, robbery and arm gang attack was kept at bay, there was sense of security and meaningful development, since after the second coming of Tinubu ( ambode), robbery has become daily occurence, tout are on rampage, dead body everywhere, people are no longer safe, demolishing of markets, places of worship, house has become the main priority of the government forgetting the simple fact that without security there will be no development.
The last time we heard of " ONE Million Gang was during the last days of Tinubu since then nothing is heard of them, fast forward to this new regime, the group suddenly surfaced more daring and more vicious first they terrorised Ajegunle area, they used to come in buses and motorcycle numbering more than 50 in number, they attack a whole neighbourhood, rape, extort or kill on the process, sometimes they operate for more than 2 hrs, they later relocate and started operating between Agbarra and Badagry, they have attack more than 5 neighbourhood in the last one week, and have sent letters to other neighbourhood to get ready for them, communities like Ajara-Lopo, ibereko, low-cost, Aradagun, Sawmill, have all received the threat letter. This coming week is going to be interesting as the police and the army are aware and patrolling this area, would this group that have been operating in the past few months still attack those communities? Why are they operating in this large number and still escape unarrested? Is police not aware of this group before? Some of their leaders were arrested during fashola, did the police realese those leaders into the community? Why is the state becoming more insecure and hostile to it residence? The governor should know if this is a deliberate and calculated cos piracy against lagosians just to look for way to loot in the name of security then it is bound to backfire cuz people will only remember him for that.
Let's pray for those communities and the country in general.
PoliticsBorno Hunters Beg Army: Allow Us To Over-run Boko Haram In Sambisa by senier007(op): 6:20pm On Jan 03, 2016
Borno State hunters have pleaded with the Nigerian Army to allow them join in the war against Boko Haram insurgents in the dreaded Sambisa forest.
Emir of hunters in the state, Mai-Gana Mai-Durma, made the appeal while addressing journalists in Maiduguri.

Hunters
Mai-Durma said the call became imperative because the hunters were familiar with the terrain at the dreaded forest, the hideout and operational base of the terrorists.
He said: “We are appealing to the military authorities to allow us join the fight against Boko Haram at the Sambisa forest. We are ready to pursue the terrorists because we know the terrain very well.”
According to him, the military should align them with members of the vigilance group, popularly known as the Civilian JTF, for effective result.
“We will overrun Sambisa in partnership with members of the civilian JTF if given the opportunity. This will help to complement the effort of military in the anti terrorism operation,” he said.
Lamenting that hunters from the 27 local government areas of the state had been rendered idle by the insurgency, he said: “Hunters from all the 27 Borno LGAs are all in Maiduguri with our leaders doing nothing at present because of Boko Haram.
“Rather than idling away, we will want to assist the military in crushing Boko Haram terrorists.”
The head of the hunters in Borno State also appealed to the Shehu of Borno, Abubakar Ibn Garbai, to assist in forwarding their request to the military authorities for consideration.

HealthThe Importance Of Knowing Your Genotype And Your Blood Group Before Marriage by senier007(op): 3:25pm On Dec 28, 2015
Genotype is the genetic makeup of an individual with reference to a trait or multiple traits. They are the collection of genes passed from parents to the children. Alleles or Allelomorphs are also referred to as the genes. Children born of a parent will have different genotype. Exceptions are seen in cases of twins or multiple births that are fertilized from the same egg. Human beings have two alleles with each pair inherited from each parent. An allele represents a gene.

There are four genotypes in humans - AA, AS, SS and AC. AC genotype is not so common and popular unlike the other three. SS and AC are the abnormal genotypes or the sickle cells. The knowledge of genotype is important when choosing life partners. Intending couples should know both their own genotype as well as their partner's genotype at the early stage of their relationship before they are well rooted in love and emotions. Emotions and time spent in the relationship can cloud people’s judgment or decision to break up if they are not compatible, thus, giving birth to sickle cell children and subjecting themselves and their children to pain, torture and agony.

Possible Outcomes of Different Genetic Combination

AA + AA = AA, AA, AA, AA
AA + AS = AA, AS, AA, AS
AA + SS = AS, AS, AS, AS
AA + AC = AA, AA, AA, AC
AS + AS = AA, AS, AS, SS
AS + SS = AS, SS, SS, SS
AS + AC = AA,  AC, AS,SS
SS + SS = SS, SS, SS, SS
AC + SS = AS, AS, SS, SS
AC + AC = AA, AC, AC, SS

People with the genotype AA are prone to malaria sickness at their early ages. Sickle cell arises when there is any blockage in the blood vessels which inhibits the flow of oxygen. When the red blood cell do not have the required oxygen, there will be changes in its original shape (disc shape) to a "Sickle-like" or "crescent-like shape", Thus, the name "sickle cell". Sickle cell patients experience severe pains in body parts that lack oxygen flow. Their bone marrows will fail to produce red blood cells and this result to anemia. To save this crisis, blood is usually transfused to them.

In terms of compatibility, someone with AA genotype can marry anybody. It is safe for someone with AS to marry someone with AA genotype. The combinations of AS and AS, AS and AC should not be risked. There is probability of having a SS. Although. Two sickle cells should not even have a relationship or get married. Individuals with the AA genotype should help you prevent genetic abnormalities by marrying the AS, AC and SS.  By this, we are hopeful to eradicate sickle cells in the world.

Blood Groups / Blood Types

The red blood cells that transport oxygen in the body carry two antigens, which are the A and B antigens. These antigens determine the blood group. Blood groups are represented with A, AB, O, and B. When the red blood cell carries only the A antigen, the blood group is 'A', it is 'B' when the blood cell has only the B antigen. When both A and B antigens are present, the blood group is 'AB'. Finally, when there is neither A nor B antigen, the blood group is referred to as ’O’.
Below is the cross breed of different blood groups and the products (offsprings)

A + A = A or O
B + B = B or O
A + B = A, B, AB or O
A + O = A or O
B + O = B or O
A + AB = A, B or AB
O + O = O only

The genotype of blood type A is AA or AO. The antigens on the blood cell are A and antibodies on the blood plasma are B.

For blood type B, the genotype is BB or BO with A as the antigens and B as antibodies.

The blood type AB has the genotype to be AB.  The antigens are both A & B, and no antibodies on the blood plasma.

The blood type  O has the genotype to be OO. There are no antigens but has antibodies to be A or B.

Rhesus factor or the 'D' antigen is also found on the surface of the red blood cell. Those with it are seen to be "rhesus positive or Rh+" and those without are "rhesus negative or Rh-". There is a possibility of having both Rh + and Rh -. A person who is Rh + will produce antibodies against Rh - blood cells. A patient with Rh +can receive blood from someone who is Rh + or Rh -. But an Rh - can only receive blood from Rh -.

Knowing your blood type helps during pregnancy. If the mother is Rh- and the father is Rh +, the fetus can either inherit the Rhesus gene from either the father or mother.  Complications (Rh incompatibility) occur when the Rhesus factor of the fetus contradicts that of the mother. This is common when a pregnant woman has Rh - and the fetus has Rh+. If the blood of the Rh + baby mixes with the mother’s, it can lead to the production of antibodies against the baby’s blood known as Rh-sensitization. To curb this disease, pregnant women should always meet regularly with obstetricians and human anti-D immune globulin or immunoglobulin should be administered to those with the complications.

General Note

*O are universal donors (donate blood to all blood types).
*AB+ are universal recipients (receive from all blood types).
*A+ can receive blood from A+, A-, O+ & O-
* A- from A- & O-
*B+ from B+, B-, O+ & O-
*B- from B- & O-
*AB- from A-, B-, AB- & O-
* O+ from O+ & O-
*O- from O-

PoliticsDickson Shot To Death By Gunmen In Bayelsa by senier007(op): 12:10pm On Dec 04, 2015
Supporters of the two major contending parties in Saturday’s governorship election in Bayelsa State, the All Progressives Party, APC, and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, are currently in a state of fear following the killing of Dieseye Dickson, the Deputy Ward Chairman of APC, Ward 1 in Odi Local Government Area of the state by unidentified gunmen.

It was learnt that the gunmen who were dressed in military uniforms shot Dickson to death in Odi community on Wednesday at about 11pm.

Reacting to the incident, the Director of Media and Publicity of the Sylva/ Igiri campaign Organisation, Chief Nathan Egba claimed that thugs suspected to be working for PDP carried out the killing.

Egba, while describing the killing as wicked, unwarranted and provocative, called on the police and other relevant agencies to ensure they apprehend those behind the killing.

He said, “As at this morning, the corpse of Mr. Dickson, was still lying in a pool of his own blood where he was killed. Do note that this is the second killing being carried out by the PDP since the campaigns started. Recall that Mr. Andrew June, a ward chairman of our party in Ekeremor LGA was hacked to death. We condemned this act of desperation by the PDP to continually attack and intimidate our supporters.”

“This killing is wicked, unwarranted and provocative. The APC and the campaign organization has repeatedly called on the police and other security agencies to step up their patrol to forestall any further attack on the APC members. Killers of these people must not be allowed to go unpunished.”

PoliticsLegal Implications Of Abubakar Audu’s Death by senier007(op): 9:50am On Nov 24, 2015
The sudden death of Prince Abubakar Audu, the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kogi State, on Sunday, 22nd November, 2015 has undoubtedly ignited a constitutional crisis.
Among the issues arising from the death of Prince Audu include, whether the running mate to Prince Audu and the APC deputy governorship candidate can assume the position and status of the deceased as the candidate of the APC; if the question in 1 above is answered in the negative, can the APC substitute the deceased as its governorship candidate; and whether it is legally permissible in the circumstance for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to cancel the inconclusive election of Saturday, 21st November, 2015 and conduct a fresh throughout Kogi State.
This is unarguably a novel case. This is the first time in the course of a democratic transition that a validly nominated candidate of a political party in Nigeria will die after an inconclusive election but before and without participating in the supplementary election. It is unprecedented.
On issue one, there is no argument about the fact that a person nominated as running mate with a Governor or Governor- Elect who was DULY ELECTED has the constitutional right of succession in the event of death, permanent incapacity, resignation or removal of the Governor or Governor-Elect. This proposition is well entrenched in both judicial and statutory authorities.
However, there are only two categories of persons/running mates that are entitled to this right of succession.
The first category is a Deputy Governor elected on a joint ticket with the Governor. Section 191 of the Constitution provides as follows:
“The Deputy Governor of a State shall hold the office of Governor of the State if the office of Governor becomes vacant by reason of death, resignation, impeachment, permanent incapacity or removal of the Governor from office for any other reason in accordance with section 188 or 189 of the Constitution.”
There are avalanche of examples of Deputy Governors in Nigeria who had automatically assumed the office of Governor following the death or impeachment of their governors’.
The second category arises where a person DULY ELECTED as the Governor dies before subscribing the oath of allegiance and oath of office. That is, where a Governor-Elect dies before his swearing in. In such situation the person elected with him as Deputy Governor (his running mate/deputy governor-elect) shall be sworn in as the governor. The authority for this is Section 181 (1) of the 1999 Constitution.
The relevant question is whether any of the two categories above is applicable to the present case in Kogi State. The answer is clearly in the negative. The reasons are obvious.
Section 179 of the 1999 Constitution stipulates two mandatory conditions that a candidate must satisfy before he/she is deemed duly elected. Firstly, the candidate must score the highest votes cast at the election. Secondly, the candidate must obtain not less than one quarter of the votes cast at the election in each of at least two-thirds of all the local government areas in the State.
Based on the results declared by the Returning Officer, Emmanuel Kucha (Vice-Chancellor of the University of Agriculture, Makurdi), Abubakar Audu of the APC scored 240,867 while Idris Wada of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) scored 199,514 votes.
According to Mr. Kucha, the margin of votes between Messrs Audu and Wada is 41,353. And that the election was inconclusive because the total number of registered voters in 91 polling units, in 18 local government areas, where election was cancelled is 49,953.
That figure is higher than the 41,353 votes with which Mr. Audu is ahead of Mr. Idris Wada of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The returning officer in compliance with Sections 26 and 53 of the Electoral Act refused to make a return until supplementary election is held in the areas where election were cancelled.
INEC is not allowed by law to make a return if the number of registered voters in the areas that elections have either been postponed or cancelled can affect the outcome of the election. 41, 353 cannot be greater than 49, 953. Whether it is possible for Mr. Wada to garner is a political question.
The law does not operate based on political calculations and conjectures. Only a supplementary election can legally determine the ultimate winner of the Kogi State governorship election. It would have been wrong for INEC to declare a winner as canvassed by some commentators without allowing the 49, 953 registered voters in the 91 polling units to exercise their constitutional right of franchise. That would have afforded the aggrieved candidates the right to have the election nullified by the Election Tribunal.
From the foregoing, the deceased APC candidate Abubakar Audu was not duly elected as the Governor of Kogi State in the governorship election held on Saturday 21st November, 2015. Therefore his running mate cannot be sworn in as the Governor. This argument has become an academic exercise since INEC has already declared the election inconclusive and indicated its intention to conduct supplementary governorship election in the 91 polling units where elections were cancelled.
Under the current constitutional regime, a Governor, Deputy Governor, Governor-Elect or Deputy Governor-Elect cannot emerge through an inconclusive election. The summary on issue one is that Section 181 (1) and 191 of the Constitution are not applicable to Hon. James Abiodun Faleke, the running mate to the late Prince Abubakar Audu. He cannot be sworn in as the Governor of Kogi State since Prince Audu had not been elected Governor before his death owing to the fact that the election is inconclusive for the reasons stated earlier.
On the second issue, the law on substitution of candidates has evolved over the years. A brief history is apposite.
Under the repealed 2002 Electoral Act, the right of political parties to substitute candidates was not restricted. This led to series of litigation candidature of political parties. By Section 34 (2) of the repealed 2006 Electoral Act, substitution of candidates by political parties was allowable only if a political party gives “congent and “verifiable reason” for seeking to substitute a candidate whose name had been submitted to INEC. The cases of Amaechi v. INEC (2008) 5 NWLR (Pt. 1080) 227 and Ugwu v. Ararume (2007) 12 NWLR (Pt. l048) 365 were principally decided by the Supreme Court based on the failure of the political party -the PDP, to give cogent and verifiable reason for seeking to substitute its candidates in the 2007 governorship elections in Rivers and Imo States, respectively.
However, the current position of the law on substitution or change of candidate is encapsulated in Section 33 of the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended). It provides as follows:
“A political party shall not be allowed to change or substitute its candidate whose name has been submitted pursuant to section 32 of this Act except in the case of DEATH or withdrawal by the candidate.” (capitalized for emphasis).
Also of relevance to the issue of substitution of candidate by reason of death is Section 36 (1) of the Electoral Act. It states thus:
“If after the time for the delivery of nomination paper and before the commencement of the poll, a nominated candidate dies, the Chief National Electoral Commissioner or the Resident Electoral Commissioner shall, being satisfied of the fact of the death, countermand the poll in which the deceased candidate was to participate and the Commission shall appoint some other convenient date for the election within 14 days.”
The combined effect of Sections 33 and 36 (1) reproduced supra offers a remedy to the constitutional crisis arising from the death of Mr. Abubakar Audu. It is humbly submitted that the APC has the right in law to substitute its deceased governorship candidate in Kogi State.
Audu was supposed to participate in the supplementary poll since the first poll did not result in the return of any candidate. Any interpretation of the expression “the poll in which the deceased candidate was to participate” that excludes ‘supplementary poll’ will lead to absurdity and injustice.
Death is a natural occurrence. The death of a candidate is beyond the control of a political party. The law recognises the right of a political party to sponsor a candidate for election and equally provides for remedies where a candidate dies either before or after the conclusion of polls.

Where a candidate dies before the commencement of polls, Section 36 (1) of the Electoral Act allows the political party that sponsored the deceased candidate to substitute him/her. But where the death occurs after the conclusion of polls but before the deceased candidate subscribes the oath of allegiance and oath of office, Section 181 (1) of the Constitution mandates the running the running mate of the deceased candidate to be sworn in as the governor.
I will now address the last issue, that is, whether INEC in the circumstance can countermand (cancel) the Kogi State governorship election held on Saturday, 21st November, 2015.
The power of INEC with respect to cancellation of election is very limited. The law allows INEC to postpone or cancel election in only two situations, namely: postponement due to violence, insecurity, natural disasters or other emergencies; and cancellation due to over voting.
There is no provision in all of the 320 sections of the Constitution or the 158 sections of the Electoral Act that empowers INEC to nullify, cancel or void either a concluded election or an inconclusive election. The death of a candidate of a political party does not confer any power on INEC to set aside either a concluded or an inconclusive election. The law has already catered for such eventuality by allowing for the substitution of the deceased candidate in the case of an inconclusive election.
Like the Rock of Gibraltar, the inconclusive election held on Saturday, 21st
November, 2015 in Kogi State cannot be altered or interfered with by INEC. The Supreme Court had settled in the Amaechi’s case supra that votes casted at an election stand to the credit of political parties and not the candidates.
Although Mr. Abubakar Audu has died, the party that sponsored him - the APC, is still alive. The votes belongs to the APC and not the deceased. That is the position of the law in Nigeria today.
Although the Kogi State governorship election is inconclusive and Section 36 (1) of the Electoral Act allows for substitution if the death occurs before commencement of poll, it is humbly submitted that the word “poll” in this context includes supplementary poll. The rights that accrues to a political party that participated in an inconclusive election cannot be extinguished merely because of the death of its candidate as where there is a right there must be a remedy.
A contrary interpretation will mean that INEC will have to cancel the entire election in Kogi State and conduct fresh election. Such interpretation will do violence to the letters and spirit of Sections 33 and 36 (1) of the Electoral Act and occasion a miscarriage of justice. That cannot be the intendment of the law. In any event, INEC does not have the power to do so for the reasons stated earlier.
In conclusion, the APC should immediately substitute its deceased governorship candidate with another person and communicate same to INEC in writing. INEC is advised to proceed with the supplementary elections in the outstanding 91 polling units. The supplementary elections must be held within 14 days from Sunday, 22nd November, 2015 in line with Section 36 (1) of the Electoral Act after which the candidate that scores the highest overall votes should be returned elected

Buhari ordered the arrest of Sambo Dasuki, former national security adviser, and other persons indicted by the investigative committee set up to audit the procurement of arms and equipment in the armed forces and defence sector from 2007 to date.

According to Buhari’s committee findings, between March 2012 and March 2015, the erstwhile NSA, Lt Col MS Dasuki (rtd) awarded fictitious and phantom contracts to the tune of N2,219,188,609.50, $1,671,742,613.58 and €9,905,477.00. Following the findings by the 13 man committee set up by the Office of the National Security Adviser to audit the procurement of arms and equipment in the Armed Forces and Defence sector from 2007 to date as directed by President Muhammadu Buhari, the Presidency has ordered the immediate arrest of former NSA, Sambo Dasuki, and others.

In a statement signed by Femi Adesina, Special Adviser to the President on Media & Publicity, the presidency said, though the committee which was inaugurated on 31 August 2015 is yet to complete its work, its interim report has unearthed several illicit and fraudulent financial transactions.
The statement said that ”as part of the findings, the committee has analyzed interventions from some organizations that provided funds to the Office of the National Security Adviser, Defence Headquarters, Army Headquarters Naval Headquarters and Nigerian Air Force Headquarters, both in local and foreign currencies.

”So far the total extra budgetary interventions articulated by the committee is Six Hundred and Forty Three Billion, Eight Hundred and Seventeen Million, Nine Hundred and Fifty Thousand, Eight Hundred and Eighty Five Hundred Naira and Eighteen Kobo (N643,817,955,885.18).

”The foreign currency component is to the tune of Two Billion, One Hundred and Ninety Three Million, Eight Hundred and Fifteen Thousand US Dollars and Eighty Three Cents ($2,193,815,000.83).
”These amounts exclude grants from the State Governments and funds collected by the DSS and Police. It was observed that in spite of this huge financial intervention, very little was expended to support defense procurement.

”The committee also observed that of 513 contracts awarded at $8,356,525,184.32; N2,189,265,724,404.55 and €54,000.00; Fifty Three (53) were failed contracts amounting to $2,378,939,066.27 and N13,729,342,329.87 respectively.

”Interestingly, it was noted that the amount of foreign currency spent on failed contracts was more than double the $1bn loan that the National Assembly approved for borrowing to fight the insurgency in the North East.

It further divulged that”The committee also discovered that payments to the tune of Three Billion, Eight Hundred and Fifty Million Naira (N3,850,000,000.00) were made to a single company by the former NSA without documented evidence of contractual agreements or fulfilment of tax obligations to the FGN.

Further findings, according to the presidency, has revealed ”that between March 2012 and March 2015, the erstwhile NSA, Lt Col MS Dasuki (rtd) awarded fictitious and phantom contracts to the tune of N2,219,188,609.50, $1,671,742,613.58 and €9,905,477.00. The contracts which were said to be for the purchase of 4 Alpha Jets, 12 helicopters, bombs and ammunition were not executed and the equipment were never supplied to the Nigerian Air Force, neither are they in its inventory.

The statement said that,”Even more disturbing was the discovery that out of these figures, 2 companies, were awarded contracts to the tune of N350,000,000.00, $1,661,670,469.71 and €9,905,477.00 alone. This was without prejudice to the consistent non-performance of the companies in the previous contracts awarded.

”Additionally, it was discovered that the former NSA directed the Central Bank of Nigeria to transfer the sum of $132,050,486.97 and €9,905,473.55 to the accounts of Societe D’equipmente Internationaux in West Africa, United Kingdom and United States of America for un-ascertained purposes, without any contract documents to explain the transactions.
”The findings made so far are extremely worrying considering that the interventions were granted within the same period that our troops fighting the insurgency in the North East were in desperate need of platforms, military equipment and ammunition. Had the funds siphoned to these non performing companies been properly used for the purpose they were meant for, thousands of needless Nigerian deaths would have been avoided.
”Furthermore, the ridicule Nigeria has faced in the international community would have been avoided. It is worrisome and disappointing that those entrusted with the security of this great nation were busy using proxies to siphon the national treasury, while innocent lives were wasted daily.

”In light of these findings, President Muhammadu Buhari has directed that the relevant organizations arrest and bring to book, all individuals who have been found complicit in these illegal and fraudulent acts,” statement said
