Agriculture / Sizes Of Catfish Feeds And Stages Of Fish To Feed Them With. by Sergioaguero: 9:00am On Aug 09
Sizes of catfish feeds and stages of fish to feed them with.

The appropriate feed sizes for catfish vary depending on their growth stages, as their nutritional requirements and feeding capabilities change over time.

Feed fries of 4 days old to 1 week 0.2 mm.

Feed 0.5mm feed two weeks after hatchery.

Feed Ijebu of 3 weeks 0.8mm feed

Fingerlings (3 to 4 grams): At this stage, catfish require a high-protein diet for rapid growth and development. Feed them with foreign feed of 0.8mm feed size, ensuring that the feed particles are small enough for them to consume easily.

Post-fingerlings (4 – 6 grams): As catfish continue to grow, their feeding habits change, and they can handle slightly larger feed particles. A feed size of 2mm is suitable for this stage.

Juvenile (6 – 10 grams): Catfish at the juvenile stage have increased dietary requirements, particularly for protein and essential amino acids. Feed them with a 2mm feed size, ensuring that the feed is of high quality to support their growth.

Post-juvenile (10 – 50 grams): During this stage, catfish undergo significant growth, and their dietary needs evolve. A 2mm feed size is still appropriate, but it's crucial to monitor their feeding behavior and adjust the feed size and formulation accordingly.

Adult (50 grams and above): As catfish reach adulthood, their growth rate slows down, and their dietary requirements shift towards maintenance. Feed them with a 3mm or larger feed size eg 4mm, depending on their size, and ensure that the feed provides balanced nutrition for maintenance, reproduction, and overall health.

550 grams melaunche - 1kg and above can be feed 5 - 6mm.

Remember to always observe your catfish's feeding behavior and adjust the feed sizes and formulations as needed. Regularly assess water quality parameters, feed consumption, and fish health to optimize growth and productivity in your catfish farming operation.

Tips on how to manage catfish fries:

1).Maintain good water quality. This is the most important factor in keeping catfish fries healthy and alive. The water should be clean, clear, and free of pollutants.

The pH should be between 6.5 and 7.5, and the temperature should be between 24 and 29 degrees Celsius.

2). Feed the fries regularly. Newly hatched fries should be fed several times a day, at a rate of 6-10% of their body weight. As they grow older, they can be fed less often.

Feed them a high-quality fry food that is specifically formulated for catfish.

3). Avoid overfeeding. Overfeeding can lead to water quality problems and make the fish susceptible to disease. Only feed the fries as much as they can eat in a few minutes.

4). Remove waste regularly. Catfish fries produce a lot of waste, which can pollute the water. Remove the waste from the tank or pond regularly to keep the water clean.

5). Protect the fries from predators. Catfish fries are small and vulnerable to predators, such as birds, turtles, and other fish. Protect them by covering the tank or pond with a fine mesh.

6). Monitor the fish closely. Keep an eye on the fish for signs of illness or stress. If you notice any problems, take action immediately.

7). Provide them with plenty of oxygen. This can be done by aeration or by circulating the water.

cool. Add plants to the tank or pond. The plants will help to improve the water quality and provide the fish with hiding places.

9). Keep the water temperature consistent. Fluctuations in temperature can stress the fish and slow their growth.

10). Provide the fish with a balanced diet. This includes a variety of live (daphna), Atemia, and dry foods.

How to make your catfish grows bigger and faster.

Maintain ideal water parameters: Aim for a pH range of 6.5-7.5, temperature between 23-29°c, and sufficient dissolved oxygen levels (5-8 mg/L).

Regularly monitor and adjust these parameters as needed.

Perform regular water changes: Replace 10-20% of the pond water at most every 2 days with fresh water to remove waste products and maintain water quality.

Control ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels: Keep these within safe limits (ammonia and nitrite below 0.5 ppm, nitrate below 50 ppm) through regular testing and water changes.

Choose a high-quality catfish feed: Opt for feed formulated feeds with high crude protein specifically designed for your catfish and life stage. These feeds provide a balanced blend of nutrients essential for growth.

Feed consistently: Establish a regular feeding schedule and stick to it. Avoid overfeeding, as this can pollute the water.

Consider supplementary feeding: Offer occasional treats like live worms like mealworms or maggots or Black Soldier fly larva, or chicken intestines or vegetables to provide variety and additional nutrients.

Prevent overcrowding: Stock your pond with the appropriate number of catfish based on its size and carrying capacity.

Overcrowding can stress fish and hinder growth.

Manage predators: Control populations of predators like birds, turtles, alligators, snakes or larger fish that might prey on your catfish.

Regularly monitor for signs of disease or parasites and take necessary actions to address them promptly.

Consider aeration: Adding aeration systems can increase dissolved oxygen levels and improve water quality, potentially benefiting growth.

Monitor growth regularly: Regularly track your catfish's weight or length to assess their growth rate and adjust your strategies as needed.

Agriculture / Effects Of Poor Water Ph On Catfish by Sergioaguero: 1:11pm On May 14
Effects of Poor Water pH on Catfish

Catfish, like most fish, have a specific range of water pH they thrive in. Deviations outside this range can have various negative consequences, impacting their health, growth, and even survival.

1. Stress and Reduced Immunity:

Acidic water (pH below 6.5): This can cause stress, damage gill tissues, and make catfish more susceptible to diseases and parasites.

Alkaline water (pH above 7.5): This can also cause stress, disrupt ammonia excretion, and affect their ability to breathe efficiently.

2. Impaired Growth and Development:

Both acidic and alkaline water: Can stunt growth, reduce appetite, and negatively impact reproduction.

Specifically, acidic water: Can interfere with mineral absorption, leading to skeletal deformities.

3. Behavior Changes:

Catfish may become lethargic, lose appetite, and exhibit erratic swimming patterns in response to poor water pH.

4. Increased Mortality:

Extreme deviations from ideal pH ranges (below 6.5 or above 7.5) can be fatal for catfish.

Acclimatization: Gradual changes in pH are less stressful than sudden shifts.

Other water parameters: Interactions between pH and other water parameters like ammonia, nitrite, and dissolved oxygen can magnify negative effects.

Maintain optimal pH for your specific catfish species (generally 6.5-7.5).

Regularly monitor and adjust water pH using appropriate methods like buffers(calcium carbonate, soda ash or aeration.

Perform water changes with pH-neutral water.

Remember, maintaining a healthy water environment is crucial for the well-being of your catfish.

Agriculture / Effect Of Too Much Stress To Catfish Fingerlings. by Sergioaguero: 9:25pm On May 08
Effect of too much stress to catfish fingerlings.

Too much stress can have detrimental effects on catfish fingerlings, which are young catfish that have recently developed from the fry stage.

Some of the potential consequences of excessive stress on catfish fingerlings include:

Reduced growth rates: Stress can interfere with the normal growth of catfish fingerlings, leading to smaller size and reduced biomass.

Increased susceptibility to disease: Stress can weaken the immune system of catfish fingerlings, making them more vulnerable to bacterial, fungal, and parasitic infections.

Increased mortality rates: High levels of stress can result in increased mortality rates among catfish fingerlings.

Poor feed conversion: Stressed catfish fingerlings may have reduced appetite and inefficient feed conversion, leading to poor growth and higher production costs.

Reduced overall production: The cumulative effects of stress on catfish fingerlings can lead to reduced overall production and profitability for catfish farmers.

To minimize stress on catfish fingerlings, farmers should maintain good water quality, provide adequate nutrition, minimize handling and overcrowding, and ensure proper environmental conditions such as temperature and oxygen levels.

Agriculture / Treating Catfish Pond Water With Oyster Shells by Sergioaguero: 9:06pm On May 05
Treating catfish pond water with oyster shells.

pH buffering: Oyster shells contain calcium carbonate, which can help stabilize water pH levels by acting as a buffer against pH fluctuations. This is especially useful in soft water areas or when high-protein feeds are used, which can cause pH to drop.

Water hardness: Oyster shells can increase water hardness, providing essential minerals like calcium and magnesium for fish health and maintaining a stable environment.

Aeration: In shallow ponds, the addition of oyster shells can help break up fine sediments on the pond bottom, improving water aeration and reducing the risk of low oxygen levels that can stress or harm fish.

Agriculture / Importance Of PH For Water Quality In Fish Farming. by Sergioaguero: 9:31pm On Apr 16
Importance of PH for Water Quality in Fish Farming.

Fish perform all their bodily functions in water. Because fish are totally dependent upon water to breathe, feed and grow, excrete wastes, maintain a salt balance, and reproduce, understanding the physical and chemical qualities of water is critical to successful fish farming. To a great extent water determines the success or failure of an fish farming operation.

Very high (greater than 7.5) or very low (less than 6.5) pH values are unsuitable for most aquatic organisms. Young fish and immature stages of aquatic insects are extremely sensitive to pH levels below 6.5 and may die at these low pH values.

High pH levels (7.6 - 14) can harm fish by denaturing cellular membranes. Changes in pH can also affect aquatic life indirectly by altering other aspects of water chemistry.

Low pH levels accelerate the release of metals from rocks in soil or sediments in the stream.

These metals can affect a fish's metabolism and the fish's ability to take water in.

High pH Levels Effect

At high pH (>7.5) most ammonium in water is converted to toxic ammonia (NH3) which can kill fish.

Moreover, cyanobacterial toxins can also significantly influence fish populations.

NOTE: One critical parameter is pH:

Not only for the health of the fish, but for the bacteria have that pollute the water as well as nitrifiers that remove excess nutrients.

pH is important in fish farming as a measure of the acidity of the water or soil.

Fish cannot survive in waters below pH 6.5 and above pH 7.5 for long periods.

The optimum pH for fish is between 6.5 and 7.5.

Fish will grow poorly and reproduction will be affected at consistently higher or lower pH levels.

Death is certain. Bad water ph is 80 % responsible for mist death in catfish rearing.

Agriculture / 7 Most Common Disease Affecting Catfish And Solution. by Sergioaguero: 5:45am On Mar 29
7 MOST COMMON DISEASE AFFECTING CATFISH AND SOLUTION.

1. CRACK HEAD DISEASE:

This is the most common catfish disease in ponds. The cause of this disease is not yet understood unlike earthen ponds and natural water bodies, although adverse water quality due to over feeding is believed to be the main factor and also unbalanced nutrients in the diet of the food.

A fish affected by this disease shows the following symptoms;
Distended abdomen due to septicemia and hemorrhage.

Occasional exopthalmus (pop eye).

This disease can detected at early stages, affected fish show reddish lateral line on the skull between the two air chambers, as soon as this symptoms is observed in some fish during sampling, feeding should be substantially reduced and pond water should be replace.
Generally, the fish recovers after few weeks after which feeding can be increased little by little.

N/B: At the final stage of the disease the skull will break laterally followed by death

2. WATER QUALITY DISEASE: Oxygen deficiency is a major cause of suffocation and mass mortality in pond. It occurs when the weather suddenly becomes hot, or the air temperature rises and reduces the solubility of the oxygen.

Prevention and treatment
For ponds, excess mud should be removed after each culture period. Fish tanks should be line-washed at the rate of 225-275kg1ha after each culture period, aerators may be used to increase oxygen level.

3. GAS BUBBLE DISEASE: This is caused by oxygen saturation in the water resulting to rapid increase in algal photosynthesis. Small bubbles accumulates on the fish, intestines, skin, and filaments causing the fishes to float.

Prevention and treatment
The addition of fresh water and fertilization to the ponds will curtail the incidence of the oxygen super saturation and gas bubbling.

4. SCOLIOSIS: This is a skeletal deformation of the fish body, Which is cause due to high concentration of heavy metal and acid in water. This can also be caused by mineral deficiency like calcium, phosphorus, vitamins like vitamin C can also result to skeletal deformation of fishes like embryos, fry, fingerlings.

Prevention and treatment
Block wall tanks, newly constructed fish tanks must be allowed to cure for 30-35days (4-5weeks) with any animal manure in bags placed inside ponds to reduce the acid effect of cement used in plastering the interior pond wall or use dry grasses and shrub in the pond and allow it to ferment with water inside for 15days (2weeks).

Dugout pond: These must be allowed to settle, limed and fertilized according before stocking fingerlings in addition. Feeds must be balance with adequate calcium and phosphorus.

5. RUNNING HORSE DISEASE: This is another disease common in catfish farm, here affected fish usually swim violently in groups around the side of the pond.

Prevention and treatment
The stocking density of fry must be control by draining part of the fish tank water every other day.

6. ANAEMIA DISEASE: Affected fishes are black with big head and small bodies. This is attributable to overcrowding and food shortage etc.
Prevention and treatment
Avoid over-crowding.
Adequate feeding is advisable.

7. GILL ROT: This is caused by bacteria called flexibacter columnaries. It affects different level of catfish like fingerlings, juvenile, and the symptoms are as follows
Black gill filament covered with mud or mucus.

Gill ulcerates drip off.
Inflammation and hyperemia are visible inside the opercula.

Treatment:

Table salt (Nacl) at a concentration of 2-2.5% for 10-15 in 20litres of water.

furazolidone 0.2g mixed will feed or oral administration 0.5kg/100kg for grow out fish or 1kg/1-100kg fingerlings.

N/B: this medication should be applied for 4-5days

Agriculture / How To Make Your Catfish Grows Bigger And Faster. by Sergioaguero: 7:30pm On Feb 24

Agriculture / Avoidable Causes Of Death Of Fingerlings by Sergioaguero: 2:52am On Jan 14
AVOIDABLE CAUSES OF DEATH OF FINGERLINGS

Fingerlings are most vulnerable when they are less than 10g in size, thus the highest mortality rates occur during this period.

Over stocking the pond leads to high mortality. This is because they need to be fed with a relatively large quantity of feed which will thus result in higher amount of waste released into the pond.

High amount of waste in fish ponds degrades water quality and should be minimised as much as possible.

Catfish are cannibals by nature, which means they feed on fellow catfish. So one should ensure that when stocking fingerlings, they should be sorted weekly and fingerlings of the same size should be stocked together.

Again, fingerlings of similar sizes should be stocked into smaller tanks before transferring them to the main grow-out pond.

Overfeeding fingerlings and juveniles may also lead to high mortality rates because they have uncontrollable appetite which lead to overfeeding and consequently death.

Another reason is transfer stress, when they are transferred from one location to another, such fingerlings/ juveniles should be left for at least 24hours before feeding.

Poor water management. Anything below and above 6.5 - 7.5 PH of Water (i.e too acidic or alkaline) makes the fish to be prone to disease infestation, poor feed conversion ration by the fish, slow growth, wasted resources, blisters on fish skin, promotes the growth of micro organisms such as fungi, bacteria, and parasitic worms that will eventually kill the fish.

High Total Dissolved Solids in water hinders metabolism and Interfere with feed conversion ration hereby leading to lower growth rate, excessive waste filteration by kidney of fish cum death of fish as kidney failure is Imminent. High TDS too can affect respiratory gills and kill the fish.

NOTE: Make sure you use your ph meter and TDS meter to regularly test your pond water ph and TDS level daily

Agriculture / How High Ph And Low Ph Kills Catfish Suddenly En Mass. by Sergioaguero: 6:45pm On Jan 08
How high ph and low pH kills catfish suddenly en mass.

Both high and low pH levels can stress and endanger catfish, but they affect them in different ways:

High pH:

Disrupts gill function: Catfish use their gills to absorb oxygen from the water. At high pH levels, the water becomes less acidic, making it harder for the gills to extract oxygen efficiently. This can lead to suffocation and death.

Reduces enzyme activity: Enzymes are crucial for digestion and other bodily functions. High pH can disrupt their activity, leading to impaired metabolism and organ malfunction.

Increases ammonia toxicity: Ammonia is a normal waste product of fish metabolism, but it becomes more toxic in high pH water. This can damage the gills, liver, and other organs, eventually leading to death.

Low pH:

Destroys skin and gills: Low pH makes the water acidic, which can erode the protective mucus layer on the catfish's skin and gills. This leaves them vulnerable to infections and parasites.

Interferes with calcium absorption: Calcium is essential for bone development and muscle function. At low pH, it becomes less available to the fish, leading to skeletal deformities and weakness.

Disrupts blood chemistry: Low pH can alter the acid-base balance in the catfish's blood, disrupting vital physiological processes and potentially leading to organ failure.

The severity of these effects depends on the duration of exposure to extreme pH levels, and the overall health of the fish.

Generally, catfish prefer slightly acidic water with a pH range between 6.5 and 7.5. Fluctuations outside this range can be stressful and harmful.

How to maintain a healthy pH level for your catfish:

Regularly test your water: Monitor the pH level daily and take corrective measures if necessary.

Perform partial water changes: This dilutes ammonia and other harmful wastes and helps stabilize pH.

Use buffers: Certain products can help stabilize pH within a desired range. eg Soda Ash, Calcium carbonate etc.

Avoid overcrowding: Overcrowding increases waste production and can contribute to pH fluctuations.

Maintain a healthy filtration system: A good filtration system will help remove waste products and keep the water quality stable.

Even small changes in pH can have a significant impact on fish health.

Always prioritize keeping the water conditions within the optimal range (6.5 -7.5) for your catfish.
