Car Talk / Re: Used SAE 20W-50 Instead Of 5W-20, Any Repercussion? by SHABZ: 5:43pm On Jun 15, 2020
Born2conquer:
When my car landed in nigeria, the mechanic that serviced the car weeks back used a SAE 20W-50 for the servicing.

I just checked the engine cap and I discovered that the recommended OIL is SAE 5W -20 orS” SAE 0W - 20

Could this harm the engine? What do you suggest i do?

I am new to automobiles

Drain the oil and replace with the correct one. Since the car manufacturer recommended lesser weighted oils, thicker oils will make the engine work more, this causes issues over time

could you break down the things that are done during overhauls?

It's mainly things related to the legs like ball joint, brake pads, tierods, shafts etc. Also when need be, the engine mountings as well. I replace the transmission fluid every 2.5 years etc. Due to the age of the car, you also get a more smaller parts failing. So during maintenance, they are all replaced

Tips to enable me enjoy the car. I've heard that it is a very great ride to own. I've also heard that it can give issues if not properly maintained.

Share with me your own candid opinions.

Both statements are correct. In my first 4 years of using the car, there were no really issues. Only expensive thing I bought was the engine oil (I use full synthetic). However, maintenance cost in the last 2 years have been pretty high, because I do overhauls during maintenance (car is now used for 6 years and counting in Nigeria). Sweet sweet ride, just make sure you have a reliable parts seller and mechanic. I use all Honda recommended fluids, maintain a maintenance schedule of 6 months, and a both a scanner too, to diagnose any maltfunction light that appears on the dash.

I went as far as using honda oil 5w20, and I didn't see any improvements in my mpg. Right now, I try to drive gently to see if i would get any improvement, my tires are within the 30/40psi, i have a competent mechanic, i also buy fuel from two service stations because their pumps are better. I have no excess weight in the car. I am exploring cleaning my injectors after changing my 6 plugs to brand new ngk iridium plugs. What's you mpg from full to half tank for city drive?

The tyre PSI of our cars is 32psi front, 29psi back. You may want to change to that. I can't really speak about injector cleaning as I don't know much about it. I don't know the mpg as I'm usually too lazy to start calculating it.lol. However, I drive mainly in the city, with 30 mins to work and 1.2 hours back home (due to traffic) and I use an average of 30 litres per week

I drive a v6 2006 accord dc and I average 100 - 120 miles from full to half tank, what solution did you apply that worked, did cleaning of your injector work?

The weight of your engine oil matters. Use the recommended weight. Also, inflate your tyres to the recommended pressure. Remove excess weight from your car. Monitor the service station you buy fuel from. Drive gently, do not accelerate or brake harshly. Maintain you vehicle constantly and use a competent mechanic.

I use a 2007 Honda Accord V6 and I get fantastic fuel economy

Hello all,

I am in urgent need of a spare parts dealer/reliable mechanic in oladipo who can deal with my accord 07.

Car brake pedal shakes on high speed suggestive of faulty brake disc.

Washed engine and now it jerks. Water in plugs?

Engine vibrates when placed on D, whilst totally stopped in traffic.

Hi, please scan the car. Likely water has damaged the throttle sensor, a failed throttle sensor sometimes present the same as you're experiencing. A scan will confirm. Furthermore, stop washing your engine, there's no significant advantage of doing this

After struggling and hustling to get a job all to no avail, a friend assisted me with 300k to start anything but what came to my mind first is transport.

I have survey on how to help these market women and men convey their goods to their various places and I discovered is more convenient with the service fee, so I asked my uncle, my mom's immediate bro who is a mechanics since 16yrs ago. He said he had one Nissan 1.6 that's owned by one late woman and the thing is in his shop, he said they want to sell it 250,000 but is negotiable. He said the car is faultless

Please is it advisable I go for the Nissan 1.6 as golf was what I've in mind. Please advise me

Nissan vehicles are known to have problematic transmissions. I would advice you avoid it

I thought they're all v6 engines with different cylinders?

The V6 means it has 6 cylinders, and they usually consume more fuel compared to 4 cylinder engines (although some turbo charged four cylinder engines consume fuel just like naturally aspirated 6 cylinder engines)

Please I need an expert advice on how convenient, and economical is the 2015 Lexus es 350.

How about its maintenance capacity and fuel economy.

I really need a sound knowledge of the car.

Much appreciation in advance.

Fuel economy rating for this car is 21/31 for city/highway, which isn't bad for a v6 engine. This is basically same fuel consumption as a 4 cylinder 2008 Honda Accord. A 2015 Honda Accord/Toyota Camry I4 is certainly more fuel efficient. If fuel economy is a major priority for you, you should skip V6 engines all together.

For convenience, it is top notch.

For durability, Lexus vehicles have a good reputation. Not sure of the cost of spare parts though

there are specific shades and hues of green which the law refers to as army green, any green outside those shades is perfectly legal to own and use

but you know naija and illegalities, expect one ignorant law enforcement officer to harass you even when your green is not specifically prohibited by the law

Thank you brother. The threat of harassment by an ignorant law enforcement officer is very real

In addition, when checking reviews, it's important to be mindful of the date the review was made.

If I'm looking into a 2010 Nissan Altima for instance, I'll be looking into reviews posted between 2016-2020. Since I'll most likely be buying one that is close to or above the 100k mile mark, I can get a more detailed picture of what to expect.

Their CVTs fail way before 100k miles, more like around 60k.

For any car you intend to buy, if it has a CVT, research via Google to ensure it wasn't produced by JATCO. They make CVTs for Nissan and some other companies... And their end product is nothing to write home about

What do you think sirs. Nissan or Honda

Flee from Nissan vehicles. They have the worst know transmissions in the market. Simply go to Google, and query consumer report for the car you're interested in, read reviews from both edmunds.com and cars.com. and make a decision.

On Google, for example type : 2014 Nissan Altima consumer reviews. Then check owners comments.

Your mechanic likes you

Car Talk / Re: Nissian Car And Kia Car: Which Is Better? by SHABZ: 10:36am On Aug 15, 2019
Nissan's have a reputation for having problematic transmissions, I'll go with Kia vehicles, from 2016 upwards.

Google consumer reviews of the car you're interested in, you can make your decision after reading the comments of the car owners.
Politics / Re: I Disagree With Chinua Achebe, The Trouble With Nigeria Is Not Politicians, But by SHABZ: 7:07am On Feb 03, 2019
Fantastic write up. I've always told my friends and colleagues that Nigerians are the problem of Nigeria, and not the politicians. Look at it this way, in a non-governmental organization, if you're employed, you get a set of KPIs to achieve. You the employee, will make sure you achieve the KPIs because failure to do so, will result in getting sacked. If you know that your job is secure irrespective of whether you achieve your KPIs or not, you would'nt make any effort towards the achievement of the targets.

This is exactly how the politicians operate. Because whether they archieve the targets or not, they know they'd be voted in again

I have gone through the data and all the sellers on jumia and autojosh. I was surprised that autojosh has no information about the oil except that it is synthetic. From their website, it is an oil that is suitable for diesel and gasoline engines, it is suitable for BMW ll01, that means it is not up to oando that has LL04 for BMW . So if your car tells you to use oils for gasoline engines only, then the oil is not suitable for your car. By the way, what brand and model is your car?

It's a 2007 Honda accord

I've been trying to convince myself to use it for some time now as my little research on it gives me a little bit of confidence (although I didn't see the ILSAC certification on it)...
