Nairaland / General / Nigerian Buys G-wagon For South African To Apologise For Impregnating His Wife by sharpboyus(m): 7:40am On Oct 28, 2017
A Nigerian man simply identified as John bought a Mercedes-Benz G-class for a South African man to apologise after impregnating his wife.
Daily Live, a South-African news website, quoted John as saying that the husband of his pregnant girlfriend immediately forgave him on receiving the car.

“I know what I did is wrong but I feel better he has accepted my gift. He accepted that his wife, my girlfriend, is pregnant and will soon give birth to my son. He was angry at first but when I presented the car to him his anger vanished,” John explained.

Another South African woman close to the family of the pregnant wife could not hold back her disappointment and anger toward the man as she claimed that Nigerian men would never take South-African men seriously after hearing this.

She said, “Nigerian men will never take our men seriously. What kind of a man accepts a gift from a man who impregnated his wife? He will impregnate her again and buy the stupid husband another car. I am so disappointed.”

When contacted, the husband who didn’t want to be named said, “it is wrong to say I am stupid. The point of the matter is we cannot reverse what happened. We sat down as men and sorted the issue. The Bible says we must forgive and forget. I have always dreamed of driving a G-wagon. Christmas came early for me and my family.

“The baby will be born and I’ll take care of him as my own. If the father wants to take him to Nigeria I wouldn’t mind. I will give my wife the support she needs always.

“That is what marriage is all about. I love my wife and will not leave her because of a mere pregnancy.”

Nairaland / General / X-fct Minister, Son Forfeit 14 Properties To FG by sharpboyus(m): 7:42am On Oct 20, 2017
The Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday ordered an interim forfeiture of 14 properties in “choice areas” of Abuja which were allegedly traced to the immediate past Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mr. Bala Mohammed, and his son, Shamsuddeen.

Justice Nnamdi Dimgba granted the interim forfeiture order upon an ex parte application by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

The judge also granted an order “directing the publication of a notice” in a newspaper and the EFCC’s website “inviting all persons/bodies who may have interest in the said properties to show cause why the said properties should not be forfeited to the Federal Government of Nigeria.”

The EFCC’s lawyer, Mr. Ben Ikani, while applying for the court orders on Wednesday, said, “We have an ex parte application for an interim order of forfeiture. The motion is dated September 6, 2017 and filed the same day. We are also praying for an order directing the publication of the notice in a newspaper. The list of the properties is in the schedule attached.”

Justice Dimgba granted the order prayed by the EFCC.

The EFCC had stated in the ex parte motion that both the ex-FCT Minister, Mohammed, and his son “have denied ownership and connection” traced to them.

But the commission maintained that “preliminary investigation has revealed that the properties listed on the schedule are unlawfully acquired through corrupt practices by the former minister and his son while in office as the minister of the Federal Capital Territory.”

The properties, according to the EFCC, included one “mansion” located at Sunrise Estate, Asokoro, Abuja.

They also included three sets of four-bedroomed semi-detached duplex at Green Acres Estate, Apo-Dutse, Abuja.

Also allegedly linked to the two suspects were two sets of four-bedroomed fully detached duplexes each with a boys’ quarters on Gana Street, Maitama, Abuja, a trekable distance to Transcorp Hilton Hotel Abuja.

Also listed as part of the properties was a four-bedroomed detached duplex with boys’ quarter located at 9 Platinum Luxury Home, White Estate, Asokoro, Abuja.

Title documents attached to the EFCC’s application described some of the facilities in some of properties to include, “excellent road and drainage network; dedicated transformer; borehole for constant water supply; fitted kitchen, bedroom cabinet and wardrobes; ample parking space; and children playing ground.”

The rest of the properties are plots of land in six different locations in Abuja.

The plots of land were said to be located at Karasana West, Abuja, measuring 84,657.30m2; Industrial Area 1 Extension, Abuja, measuring 1.45Ha; and Guzape, Abuja measuring 2.7Ha.

Others were located at Industrial Area 1 Extension, Abuja, measuring 1.26Ha; Karasana West, Abuja measuring 64,507m2; and Dakibiyu, Abuja measuring 1,251.15m2.

Before Wednesday, the EFCC had previously seized some sets of properties from Mohammed and his son.

Already, the EFCC is prosecuting the former minister before a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Gudu, Abuja, on six corruption-related charges, and his son, Shamsuddeen, before the Federal High Court, Abuja, on 15 counts of money laundering and failure to declare some assets.

The charges against Shamsuddeen involve about N1.1bn.

But the EFCC stated in its fresh application that “the crux of this application is that the respondents are being investigated for offences bordering on abuse of office, fraudulent land scams, corruption and corrupt practices, money laundering and diversion of revenue of government while being the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.”

It also stated that the properties traced to the father and son were “reasonably suspected to be proceeds of unlawful activities and crimes, kept and concealed in the names and proxies and nominees of the former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Senator Bala Mohmmed, and his son, Shamsuddeen Bala Mohammed and for their benefit have been recovered and seized.”

According to the EFCC, the properties were held in the names of different companies and one Maimuna S. Aliyu.

The commission described Aliyu as Bala’s proxy allegedly used to the houses 1A and 2A of No. 7 Gana Street Maitama, Abuja.

The companies in whose names some of the properties were said to be held are Intertrans Global Logistics/Bird Trust Agro-allied Limited, Gal Vac Mining Limited, and Diakin Telecommunication Limited.

Giving the details of its investigation, the EFCC maintained that the former minister and his sons are the owners of the of Diakin Telecommunications Ltd., Bal-Vac Mining Ltd., Bird Trust Nigeria Ltd. and Intertrans Global Logistics Ltd., and Intertrans Global Logistics Ltd. in whose names some of the properties were acquired.

The commission also alleged that Bala, while still being the FCT minister appointed one Jemila Tangaza as Special Assistant and, thereafter, Director of Abuja Geographic Information System (A018) “to facilitate fraudulent allocations of plots of land to her and her proxies and nominees in choice areas.”

The commission alleged that the plots of lands were sold and their “proceeds laundered in the acquisition of some these houses like House No 9 Plantinurn White Estate Abuja, acquired in the name of Mohammed Musa.”

It said Intertrans Global Logistics Ltd. was linked to the son of the former minister, Shamsuddeen.

The affidavit filed in support of the forfeiture application partly read, “That investigation revealed that the former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Senator Bala Mohammed and his son are owners and beneficiaries of Diakin Telecommunications Ltd., which they used to acquire house FS1A, Green Acres Estate, Apo-Dutse, Abuja, and No. FS1B Green Acres Estate, Apo-Dutse, Abuja, while Senator Bala Mohammed was Minister of Federal Capital Territory. Copy of sales agreement between Abuja Investment Company Limited with Diakin Telecommunication Ltd. in respect of houses at FS1A and FS1Bis hereby annexed and marked as exhibits EFCC A1 and 2.

“That investigation equally reveals that former Minister of Federal Capital Territory Abuja, Senator Bala Mohammed and his son uses the company known as Diakin Telecommunication Ltd. to corruptly acquire Plot N0; 32 Cadastral Zone D06 Karsana West, Abuja; Plot 1420 Cadastral Zone B10, Dakibiyu and Plot 1261 Cadastral Zone C16 Industrial Area 1 Extension Abuja. Copies of C of O dated 11/6/2013, 06/04/2013 and 06/09/2014 issued by the FCT Minister in the name of Diakin Telecommunication Ltd. is hereby annexed and marked as exhibit EFCC A3, 4 &5 respectively.”

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has traced N2.114bn to the bank account of Magel Resort Limited, which was allegedly owned by Mrs. Patience Jonathan and her late mother, Mama Charity Oba. According to the EFCC, the total amount of money traced to Mrs. Jonathan is now N17bn. Patience, the wife of former President Goodluck Jonathan, had last week, filed a N2bn fundamental human rights suit against the EFCC, accusing the anti-graft agency of subjecting her to psychological trauma, unnecessary persecution and going as far as freezing her late mother’s accounts.

Nairaland / General / 21,780 Kaduna Teachers Fail Primary Four Exam by sharpboyus(m): 7:29pm On Oct 10, 2017
About 21,780 out of 33,000 teachers failed the primary four test administered to test their competence by the Kaduna State government.

The state is therefore shopping for 25,000 new teachers as one of the plans to restore dignity and quality to education.

Governor Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna State unveiled the planned recruitment when he received a World Bank’s delegation in Kaduna on Monday.

“We tested our 33,000 primary school teachers, we gave them primary four examination and required they must get at least 75 per cent but I am sad to announce that 66 per cent of them failed to get the requirements.

“The hiring of teachers in the past was politicized and we intend to change that by bringing in young and qualified primary school teachers to restore the dignity of education in the state,” the governor said.

He stressed that teachers would be redeployed across the state to balance the issue of teacher-pupil ratio.

“We have a challenge with the teacher-pupil ratio in the urban schools; there is concentration of teachers that are not needed.

‘’In some local government areas, it’s a teacher pupil ratio of 1-9 while in some places it’s 1-100,” he said.

The governor said that in a bid to improve the education sector, the school Directors decided to enrol their children in public schools starting from this academic session.

Speaking earlier, the World Bank representative, Dr Kunle Adekola, expressed appreciation to the state for investing in education and for the priority given to the girl child.

“This state has demonstrated and supported us to achieve our goals,” he said.

Adekola said the Bank would invest N30 million in Rigasa Primary School, which has a population of about 22,000 pupils, as part of its support for the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Education Intervention Fund by the World Bank and other collaborative development partners, is rendering support to about 13 Northern states and a state from each of the other four geopolitical zones of the country.(NAN)

Isaac Success arrested after ‘paying four hookers £2,000 for a hotel romp’ and ‘angrily demanding his cash back’

A PREMIER League ace paid four hookers £2,000 for a hotel romp — but failed to score with any of them after drinking two bottles of Baileys.

Watford’s Isaac Success, 21, was arrested after angrily demanding his money back.

Escort Alexis Domerge said the Watford star boasted of his prowess in the bedroom after paying the women £2,000 for a hotel romp.

But the 21-year-old, who has found the net only once in 19 Watford appearances, drank two bottle of Baileys — and then repeatedly failed to score with the hookers.

When the women decided to blow the whistle on Success’s lacklustre performance after 90 minutes, he angrily demanded his money back.

He was arrested in the hotel lobby after cops were called.

Alexis, 24, said: “He accused us of ripping him off and asked for his money to be returned.

“It was terrifying. He had paid four of us £500 each to party with him and we all got naked as soon as the money came through on our phone bank accounts.

“He was drinking Baileys straight from the bottle.

“He must have chugged at least two. I pulled off his shorts and got down to it with three other girls doing everything you could imagine.

“But he was getting frustrated. What do you expect if you drink two bottles of Baileys liqueur straight from the bottle?”

Fellow escort Michaela Carter, 30, said: “He had a nice body and all four of us massaged him for a full hour and a half — as long as a football match.

“He had been boasting to us all night about how much he earned and how much fun we were going to have.

“But it’s fair to say that Mr Success did not live up to his name during our night together.

“He seemed really keen on Baileys — swigging the stuff out of the bottle. It made me cringe because it’s so sickly sweet.

“He seemed a bit shy and awkward, probably because he’s only 21. After a bit of chat Alexis took charge and said it was time to get down to business.

“She laughed and told him, ‘We want your money before the honey’.

“So he transferred £2,000 straight to one of the girls which was divided between the four of us.

“The partying started as soon as the money came into our accounts and we all stripped off.

“All five of us were squirming around on the bed but after a while we realised the Baileys had taken its toll.

“Eventually, I told him I couldn’t stay any longer and we couldn’t give him extra time. That’s when things started to get nasty.

“There was a lot of screaming which must have woken the entire hotel.

“At that point the police were called. We were all making a terrible racket.

“I ended up with a slight cut on my face and a bruise on my arm during the chaos.

“I don’t know how it happened. During the row I also stumbled backwards and broke the heels of my £600 Louboutin shoes. It meant I was already £100 down.”

Things turned nasty when the girs told Success they couldnt give him extra time
Nigerian international Success, who earns £30,000 a week, booked the four girls after spending the night at a lap-dancing club in London’s West End.

In the early hours they were texted the details of the luxury Sopwell House hotel, Herts, where Success had hired a first-floor suite.

Michaela said: “We met him and a couple of his mates in reception but they left, leaving just Isaac and the four of us.

“We went up to his room. It was a nice room and I could tell he had lots of money because there were designer clothes in there and Christian Louboutin trainers which can cost £800 a pair.

“He offered us drinks then started boasting about how rich he was.

“He said, ‘You won’t believe how much I earn in 90 minutes’.”

Alexis, from Brooklyn, New York, said: “I was actually quite turned on by his body. He’s beautifully toned.

“Eventually, Michaela and one of the other girls broke it to him that they couldn’t stay any longer.

“But he then accused us of ripping him off and demanded his money back.

“Several police cars arrived really quickly and about five officers came in and cuffed his hands behind his back and took him outside.

“Success admitted that he had paid us for sex.

“But he also claimed we’d cheated him out of the cash, without mentioning the reason why he didn’t have sex.

“All this commotion was more than the hotel management could take and they ordered us out of the hotel — including him.

“It’s a really nice place and I guess this isn’t the sort of behaviour they tolerate.”

The hookers said Success later called his bank and had the payments to them stopped.

Alexis said: “We couldn’t believe it when he accused us of cheating him and got the bank to get him his money back.

“We made a deal and it wasn’t our fault he didn’t have a good time. His behaviour was off the scale.”

Success signed for Watford from Spanish side Granada for £12.5million last July — then a record fee for the Hertfordshire club. He has struggled to make the starting line-up since.

He sat out Watford’s 2-0 away win at Southampton on September 9 but went out on the town in London the following day before hooking up with the girls.

Alexis and Michaela and another 34-year-old escort were recruited by a fourth hooker, a friend of Success’s.

A Hertfordshire Police spokesman said: “Police are investigating an allegation of assault reported to have occurred at 6.30am at Sopwell House in St Albans on Monday September 11.

“A 21-year-old man was arrested and de-arrested and inquiries are ongoing.”

Nairaland / General / Gunmen Kidnap Kogi Magistrate by sharpboyus(m): 4:11pm On Oct 06, 2017
A Magistrate with Kogi judiciary, Mr Sam Unwuchola, has been kidnapped on Ajaokuta-Lokoja road.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) gathered that the magistrate was kidnapped at Jimgbe, near Salem University, at about 7 p.m on Thursday.

According to an authoritative source in the state judiciary, the gunmen shot and wounded the magistrate’s friend whose name was yet to be known, saying that the friend had been admitted at an undisclosed medical facility in Lokoja.

The source also said that the victims ran into the hoodlums who opened fire on them thereby forcing them to stop, adding that the kidnappers had demanded N100 million ransom from the wife of the magistrate.

When contacted, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Ali Janga, said the police had commenced investigation into the matter.

NAN reports that Unwuchola, a 2002 Law graduate of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma in Edo, is the President, Upper Area Court, Onyedega in Ibaji Local Government Area of the state.

The battle against kidnapping and other forms of criminality in the state began about five months ago when the state government ordered the demolition of 13 houses belonging to arrested kidnappers in the central senatorial district of the state.

The Special Adviser on security to the Governor, Navy Commodore Jerry Omodara (retired), told journalists in Okene that the exercise would continue until the state was rid of kidnapping and other criminality.

“The Kogi State government will not relent efforts to flush out criminal elements in their hide outs” Omodara assured.

He warned that anybody caught aiding and abetting crimes in the state would also not be spared, irrespective of status in the society.

The goveror’s aide said the state government had no choice than to take the drastic action, in view of the havoc meted on innocent good people of the state by hoodlums in recent times.

He said the state government had also inaugurated 300-man-joint security outfit dedicated to fighting kidnapping, armed robbery, cultism and other violent crimes code named: Operation Total Freedom.” to further check criminality in the state.

He said members of the outfit were drawn from the police, the army, the navy and the National Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

Nairaland / General / Bayelsa Govt Uncovers N322m Pay Roll Fraud In Lgs by sharpboyus(m): 11:04am On Oct 06, 2017
YENAGOA—Bayelsa State Government, yesterday, said it had uncovered over N322 million monthly payroll fraud in the eight local government areas of the state following a verification exercise by the state government.

Governor Seriake Dickson, who disclosed this at an event to mark this year’s World Teacher’s Day in Yenagoa, said that the massive fraud in the local government system and the shortfall in the allocation to the councils were responsible for the inability of the councils to pay salaries of primary school teachers and other council workers in the state.

•Gov Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa
The governor who was represented by the Commissioner for Education, Mr. Jonathan Obuebite, also appealed to the striking primary school teachers in the state to suspend their five weeks old strike in the interest of the pupils and give the state government some time to address the matter by implementing the recommendation of the report.

As part of the recommendations, he said, a Joint Account will be open where all the councils will domicile the funds for the payment of primary school teachers while the state government will augment the difference, adding that the state government cannot take over the responsibility of teachers salaries as it was a constitutional responsibility of the councils.

He said: “A special verification committee for the local governments set up by the state government has submitted its report and has uncoverd a wastage of over N322 million every month that people are taking from the system and that is the reason councils cannot pay salaries. The government has decided that this monster will be fought to a standstill. The committee report will be submitted to a special Judicil Committee of Inquiry and we are going to address this issue once and for all.

“The councils wage bill for the month is about N1.2 billion when you minus N300 million from it, that will drastically bring their salary bill to less than N1 billion and the allocation that comes to all the councils is less than N1 billion.

“This discovery will help shoulder the burden but as a government and in other to ensure accountability and transparency , a special account is to be open where all the councils will pay their contributions and the state government will bring its part to augment the shortfall, and the committee will now dispense the funds to the teachers in the state, with this we would have solve the problem we are having.”

The spirit of Fela Anikulapo Kuti, who died on 2 August 1997, has been trending on Twitter, following comparison between him and Nigeria’s Wizkid.

The immediate trigger for the comparison was the sold-out concert of Wizkid at the Royal Albert Hall in London, with some Wizkid fans jumping to the conclusion that Wizkid must be the greatest musician ever to emerge from Nigeria.

Not so, said many posts on Twitter, most of whom said it was aberrational and outrightly disrespectful to compare Fela with Wizkid. Here are ten tweets on the debate

Amigo @PapazLagos

Stop disrespecting Fela by comparing him to Wizkid, That’s a legend who took Africa to the world when there was no social media nor internet

Cinderella Man ✔ @Osi_Suave

Fela was way more than a musician.

Fela was culture

Fela was activism.

Ferdinand @Burmese_Tyga

Fela didnt become greatest Saxophonist in Africa, stood for the people, had his mum thrown of the balcony for u to compare him to Wizkid.

⚡️DaddyMo ⚡️ @officialdaddymo

Comparing Wizkid and Fela is intellectual bankruptcy.

Don’t do it.There are other topics you can engage in for mental stimulation.

Isima @IsimaOdeh

Sir Paul McCartney sold over 1 BILLION albums with The Beatles. He came to Nigeria to beg Fela for a collaboration, Fela said no. Motown executives traveled to Nigeria & offered him $1m to be signed to Michael Jackson’s former label, he said no.

FAVOUR ONYEOZIRI @Rouvafe

Which Wizkid are you people comparing to Fela? the Wizkid that cannot last a day in cell, talk less of jail abi another Wizkid

Ferdinand @Burmese_Tyga

Cant blame these generation tho! Music done went from “message” to “pon pon pon” beat! Thats why u rate a club artist over FELA KUTI!!

Ebuka Akara @ebuka_akara

Fela sang for the people. He fought with the government and demanded a better life for Nigerians through his music. They even killed his mom

Osas Cruz @OsasCruz

Its disrespectful for anyone to compare wizkid to Fela, abeg Wizkid is doing well & We Are Proud of Him but STOP disrespecting Baba Fela

Isima @IsimaOdeh

Anybody who says Wizkid is greater than Fela is seeking for attention. Don’t give it to them. Even Wizkid knows that Fela is his great grandfather when it comes to musical greatness.

One post however says that Fela”s greatness belongs to the past and that Wizkid is the new King

David Emmanuel @UcheTheAfrican

Yes, Fela inspired & made this path available for Wizkid. But, today and right now, Wizkid is greater & more accepted.

Success is a ladder

Fela Anikulapo Kuti, also professionally known as Fela Kuti and simply Fela, was a Nigerian multi-instrumentalist, musician, composer, pioneer of the Afrobeat music genre, human rights activist, and political maverick. He died in 1997 at 58.

Nairaland / General / This Is Officially How Long You Should Wash Your Hands For According To Science by sharpboyus(m): 3:31pm On Sep 29, 2017
People need to spend 20 seconds washing their hands to fully get rid of germs, experts say.
The Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) said washing your hands for 20 seconds – the time it takes to sing Happy Birthday twice – was the only sure way of getting rid of viruses and bacteria that can cause colds, flu, infections and upset stomachs.

It is calling for people to wash their hands more thoroughly as a way of cutting down the need for antibiotics, which are becoming less effective as bugs become increasingly resistant to them.

About a third of cases of diarrhoea and 16% of respiratory infections can be prevented through good handwashing.

The RPS’s poll of more than 2,000 people found that 84% are not washing their hands for long enough.

Meanwhile, 65% do not always wash their hands before eating, and half do not wash them after touching animals including pets.

Some 32% do not wash their hands before preparing food and a fifth of people (21%) do not always wash their hands after going to the toilet.

RPS president Ash Soni said: “We don’t wash our hands often enough for long enough to get rid of the bacteria that can cause illnesses.

“Even when we remain unaffected by the bugs we carry, if we don’t wash our hands we can transmit infections which then become a real problem for those who are more vulnerable, such as children and the elderly, who may then need to be prescribed antibiotics.

“If we can reduce the number of illnesses where antibiotics are needed, we can reduce antibiotic resistance by saving these important medicines for when they are really required.

“Antibiotics should not be given for viral infections but often still are, partly due to patient demand.

“It’s easy to pick up an infection and once ill, people often visit their GP to request antibiotics because they think they are not getting better quickly enough, when in fact infections can be expected to last longer than you might think.”

According to the RPS, sore throats last seven to eight days on average, ear infections last eight days, colds 14 days and a cough for 21 days.

It says people should look up the hand-washing technique recommended by the NHS, which lasts for 20 seconds and includes the back of the hands.

Nairaland / General / N4.9billion Fraud: How Fani-kayode Paid Me N30m - Witness by sharpboyus(m): 1:53pm On Sep 28, 2017
At today’s sitting, Olusegun, who is the first prosecution witness, told the court that he was contracted to print posters and flyers for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Campaign Organization of former President Goodluck Jonathan in the 2015 general election.

The witness also told the court he was awarded the contract based on a referral from a man simply identified as Adedayo, who introduced him to one Aderemi Ajidahun, a member of former President Jonathan campaign organization headed by Fani-Kayode.

Olusegun further told the court that he was later introduced to one Oke who paid him the sum of N30m in two installments of N6million and N24million for the job.

While cross-examining the Witness, counsel to Fani-Kayode, Norrisson Quakers, SAN, told the court that PW1 wrote two statements, one in the EFCC office and another to the court, which he said were contradictory.

Though Quaker sought to tender in evidence one of the statements written by the PW1, the prosecution counsel, Rotimi Oyedepo, objected to its admissibility .

The prosecution counsel insisted that Quakers must “emphatically and specifically point out the contradictions in the two statements in accordance with the provisions of the law and also draw the attention of the witness to those contradictions in the two statements before they can be admitted in evidence.”

Oyedepo, therefore, urged the court to discountenance the argument of the counsel to Fani Kayode.

Also, the second prosecution witness, PW2, Teslim Ajuwon, an employee of Zenith Bank Plc., told the court how he received a letter from EFCC requesting for the account opening documentation, certificate of identification and statement of account of Joint Trust Dimension Limited.

Ajuwon, who works as Compliance Officer with the bank, told the court that he later sent the documents duly signed by him to the EFCC as requested.

However, when the prosecution counsel sought to tender the documents in evidence, counsel to the defendants objected to their admissibility.

Counsel to the first defendant, Ferdinand Obi, SAN, told the court the documents were not in his possession and that he would want to address the court from the documents.

He further told the court that the documents were purportedly printed from Zenith Bank Plc and that they were neither signed nor dated.

“This is not in conformity with the provision of Evidence Act, 2011,” he added.

He, therefore, urged the court to reject the documents and mark them as rejected.

After much arguments between counsel, the prosecution withdrew the documents.

Justice Aikawa adjourned the matter to November 20, 21 and 22, 2017 for continuation of trial.

Nairaland / General / Fani Kayode Loses Bid To Transfer Corruption Trial To Abuja by sharpboyus(m): 7:42am On Sep 27, 2017
Akin Kuponiyi

A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos south west Nigeria on Tuesday dismissed an application by former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-kayode, seeking transfer of the money laundering case preferred against him to Abuja.

Fani-Kayode, is currently standing trial alongside a former Minister of State for Finance, Nenadi Usman, and the former National Chairman of the Association of Local Government in Nigeria, (ALGON), Yusuf Danjuma, and his company, Jointrust Dimensions Ltd.

The accused are facing trial on 17 counts charge of money laundering to the tune of N4.6 billion.

All the accused who were first arraigned on June 28, 2016 before Justice Muslim Hassan of the same court, but the judge withdrew from the suit on March 16, 2017 following an application by Fani-Kayode, on grounds of a likelihood of bias. The accused who are currently on bail were consequetly re-arraigned before Justice Mohammed Aikawa.

At the last adjourned date on June 21, Fanikayode’s counsel, Mr Norrisson Quakers (SAN) had prayed the court to transfer the case to its Abuja division, on the ground that the court lacked jurisdiction to try the case

He argued that the facts of the case showed that all the transactions carried out by the accused while being Director of Media and Publicity of the Goodluck Jonathan Campaign Organisation, took place in Abuja.

Besides, he contented that the defendant resides in Abuja and had another trial going on at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

However in his objection, EFCC’s counsel Mr Rotimi Oyedepo urged the court to refuse the application, on the grounds that the transactions as well as cheques and receipts in furtherance of same, were done in Lagos.

He urged the court to dismiss the application for transfer, as a mere waste of time.

In his ruling today , Justice Aikawa held that some of the authorities cited by defence counsel, were delivered before the enactment of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015, which he noted had provided exceptions to the issues of venue of court.

“In the case before me, the prosecution avers in its counter affidavit that “the sum of N30 million was paid to PW1 (Olusegun Idowu) of Paste Posters Company Ltd, who has his office in Lagos”.

“This, in my view shows that all facts leading to the transaction was done in Lagos, and only evidence will prove otherwise.

“In the light of all these, it is clear that the facts and circumstances of this case falls into the exceptions of the law regarding criminal trials.

“There is no justification to warrant a transfer of this case to Abuja; the interest of justice requires that the trial of this case continues in this court.

“This application hereby fails and is accordingly dismissed,” he declared.

The court also ruled on an objection raised by defence counsel on the last adjourned date, challenging the tendering of photocopies of payment receipts by PW1, who had began his evidence on June 7.

Aikawa held that it was not the business of the court to concern itself with whether a document is original, so long as the document sought to be tendered, is duly certified.

The court accordingly, dismissed the objections, admitted the receipts in evidence and marked same as exhibits 3 and 3A respectively.

The court then called on prosecution to continue with the examination of his first witness.

Led in continuation of his evidence before the court, Oyedepo asked PW1(Idowu): “you told the court that you printed some posters, now take a look at exhibit 3 and tell the court if that is the payment receipt.”

In response, the witness responded “yes” and added that the amount on the receipt was N6million which payment was made to him in cash, and in the name of “Directorate of Media and Publicity, PDP Campaign Organisation”.

The witness added that on same day, the sum of N30million was also remitted to him in cash in the name of same Directorate.

After the conclusion of his testimony, the prosecutor informed the court that he was done with examination in chief of his first witness.

Meanwhile, defence counsel, (Quakers) urged the court to grant an adjournment to enable him study the exhibits and prepare his cross examination.

The court consequently, adjourned the case to Sept 27 (tomorrow) for cross examination and continuation of trial.

In the charge, the accused were alleged to have committed the offences between January and March 2015.

In counts one to seven, they were alleged to have unlawfully retained over N3.8 billion which they reasonably ought to have known formed part of the proceeds of an unlawful act of stealing and corruption.

In counts eight to 14, the accused were alleged to have unlawfully used over N970 million which they reasonably ought to have known formed part of an unlawful act of corruption.

Meanwhile, in counts 15 to 17 Fani-Kayode and one Olubode Oke, who is said to be at large, were alleged to have made cash payments of about N30 million, in excess of the amount allowed by law, without going through a financial institution.

Besides, Fani-Kayode was alleged to have made payments to one Paste Poster Co (PPC) of No 125 Lewis St., Lagos, in excess of amounts allowed by law.

All offences were said to have contravened the provisions of sections 15 (3) (4), 16 (2) (b), and 16 (5) of the Money laundering (prohibition) (Amendment) Act

Attah said that the highlights of the meeting included the Turkish ambassador restating his country’s support for Nigetia’s security and well being, saying that Turkey would not support any dangerous shipment to Nigeria.

A team of Nigerian Customs will visit the Turkish Customs to further discus ways of nipping such arms export from Turkey and strengthening agreement on mutual customs-to-customs assistance.

The Nigeria Customs will provide for the Turkish authority list of prohibited items and in the case of arms, sample of end user certificate to enable them to always verify before approving any legal arms export to Nigeria.

Attah also stated that the Turkish government would co-operate with Nigeria in every step to deal decisively with those found involved.
