Nairaland / General / Woman Sentenced To Death For Adultery After SHE Was Raped At Gunpoint By Cousin by sharpboyus(m): 4:30pm On May 31, 2017
The teenager claimed she was asleep at her family home in Rajanpur in Pakistan’s central Punjab province when she was attacked.
She reported the crime to the local panchayat – a tribal court that operates outside the official justice system in remote areas of Pakistan.
Instead of justice, the group turned on her accusing her of seducing her attacker.
Named only as Shumaila, the woman said: “I could not raise an alarm as Ahmed was holding a gun. But the panchayat refused to accept my statement and declared that I wilfully slept with him.”
Reports from Pakistan’s Express Tribune claim the panchayat, which include the alleged rapist’s father, found the victim guilty of adultery, branding her a ‘kari’ or adulteress.
According to local media, Shumaila was then sentenced to death by stoning, a fate she could save herself from if she agreed to be sold off.
No action was taken against the alleged rapist, named locally as Khalil Ahmed.
Fearing for her life, Shumaila, along with her father, turned to local police for help.
An investigation has been launched into her ordeal, and an arrest warrant has been issued for members of the tribal council.
An arrest warrant has also been issued Ahmed.
Women declared ‘Kari’ are often executed by their own families in so-called honour killings as part of efforts to restore their reputation.
In order to protect the victim from all parties, police say she has been given refuge at a government-run safe house for women.

Nairaland / General / The Risks And Benefits Of Fasting During Ramadan I Newspaperupdate.com by sharpboyus(m): 5:29pm On May 26, 2017
A meal can be eaten after the sun goes down,
CANBERRA TIMES

A meal can be eaten after the sun goes down,

Muslim across Australia and New Zealand will be participating in the month-long Ramadan fast from May 26 to June 24.

This means no fluids (including water), food, caffeine or tobacco during daylight hours.

While the benefits of intermittent fasting have been well-publicised in recent years, what happens when we fast for extended periods (as with Ramadan) and how does fasting affect those with health problems?

Ramadan poses no danger to healthy people (apart from caffeine-withdrawal headaches and the potential for dehydration if you’re not careful), but it can be risky for those with existing health conditions like diabetes.

READ MORE:
* Muslim family prepares for Ramadan with a new addition
* Eid celebrations wrap up Ramadan

“Ramadan fasting is associated with short-term improvements in good HDL cholesterol, and reductions in bad LDL cholesterol and total cholesterol (although not in people who have diabetes),” explains dietitian Melanie McGrice. “Unsurprisingly, Ramadan has been found to lower body weight, body fat percentage and BMI (body mass index) in the short term.

“However, the long-term effects of Ramadan fasting on these risk factors remains uncertain (and unstudied). It can also be problematic for the blood glucose levels of people with diabetes.”

It can also be beneficial, if managed correctly.

“Intermittent fasting can be beneficial for blood glucose levels and diabetes management,” says Vania Khoury, of Diabetes NSW & ACT. “But if you’re on certain medications then you need to be prepared.”

Khoury says that Australian Muslims living with diabetes can put themselves at risk of serious health complications (including hyperglycaemia, hypoglycaemia and blood clots) by fasting without adequate preparation and care.

About 8 per cent of the Australian population have diabetes but rates are higher among Muslim communities.

Despite the risks, about half (43 per cent) with type 1 diabetes and most (79 per cent) of those with type 2 diabetes still fast during Ramadan.

However, many of those with diabetes who choose to fast even when advised not to (often because of family or social pressure) are reluctant to talk with their doctor.

Khoury reminds that those who are unwell, pregnant or travelling are exempt from fasting and the Koran instead suggests they participate by donating what they would normally spend on food to a charity.

Those who wish to fast can minimise their risk of health complications by planning, she says.

“The nature of the Ramadan changes in eating patterns can cause major changes in blood glucose levels considering the longer gaps between meals and the concentrated nature of the feasting,” Khoury explains, recommending regular blood glucose checks.

Despite a tendency to eat in excess and eat more fatty, fried foods during the nightly feast, Khoury advises against overindulging.

“Break your fast with the traditional sunset snack of two dates, a glass of water and a bowl of soup,” Khoury says. “This prophetic tradition provides an instant energy boost and helps settle your hunger. So it’s meant to benefit your body and to benefit you spiritually, so eating junk food is not part of the main idea of Ramadan.”

Khoury suggests sticking to the “healthy plate model” at meal times. “We usually say to people carbohydrates should fill one quarter of your plate, protein the other quarter and vegetables should fill half the plate.”

She also advises those with diabetes to check in with their doctor or diabetes educator to plan each day and know when to take insulin or other diabetes medication, which may be timed according to meal times.

“Some doses may need to change” Khoury says. “Health professionals respect your commitment to your faith, but it needs to be within the context of your health.”

The trial of Lanre Gentry, the estranged husband of Nollywood star actress, Mercy Aigbe at an Ikeja Chief Magistrate Court, Ogba, was Wednesday stalled as the latter failed to show up.

Gentry was in court but Mercy Aigbe was absent.

Officials of the Lagos State Domestic s*xual Violence Response Team (DSVRT) and Gentry met with the trial Chief Magistrate Folakemi Davies-Abegunde behind closed door in her chamber and agreed on June 7 for the couple to appear, The Nation reports.

Chief Magistrate Court Folakemi Davies-Abegunde had fixed today for Gentry to show cause why he should not be “restrained permanently” from coming close to his wife, Mercy Aigbe.

Mercy was expected to tender before the court, through her counsel, Adeola Falade, the medical report of the alleged domestic violence meted on her by her estranged husband.

A social worker with the Lagos State Domestic abd s*xual Violence Response Team (DSVRT), Adeola Falade had on April 28 approached the court, on behalf of Mercy Aigbe, to ask for restraining order against Gentry over alleged violence against his wife.

Falade alleged that Gentry had gone to his wife’s tailor’s place “to attack and beat her mercilessly”.

She tendered five photographs and copies of the medical scanned report of the applicant and then applied for the restraining order in line with sections 5(1), 1(3) and section 7(1) of Protection Against Domestic Violence and Connected Purposes Law 2007.

Nairaland / General / Why I Cut Off My joystick – Musician, Andre Johnson [PHOTO] by sharpboyus(m): 7:50pm On Apr 29, 2017
A United States, US, rapper, Andre Johnson, has explained why he chopped off his penis during a party and then jumped off a second-floor balcony.

Speaking with BBC, the Los Angeles rapper disclosed that he took the extreme measure because he felt that his penis was out of control, adding that his “interactions” with women had been “callous.”

According to Johnson, “At the back of my mind, my issues were eating me. I was thinking my interaction with women have been just callous, no moral code.

“I said I will fix this problem that is causing me so much misery. That’s when I think the insanity kicked in. I said, ‘Yo, my dick is outta control. I need a vasectomy.”

Johnson had in April 2014 yanked off his penis.

Following his action, the rapper was hospitalised and diagnosed with having suffered a period of severe depression, this led to him being referred to a psychiatrist.

Describing his unusual action, the rapper said, “I just jumped up, out of nowhere and I went to the kitchen.

“I grabbed a knife and, bam, I pulled down my pants and (he mimes a chopping motion) … that quick.”

He assured that though doctors were unable to reattach the severed part of his penis after a life-saving surgery, that doesn’t mean that he can’t have sex.

“When I’m actually having the act of sex, it’s not like, ‘Oh I wish I still had my penis. It’s like, I’m in there. Like it used to be,” he said.

Confessing to using drugs and alcohol, Johnson said, “When we have mental health issues, we turn to drugs – you know, smoke this, have a drink.”

Nairaland / General / Zimbabwe Schools Accept Goats For Tuition Fees by sharpboyus(m): 9:20am On Apr 19, 2017
Zimbabwe’s new ‘goat economy’ now includes school fees

Parents in Zimbabwe who cannot afford school fees can offer livestock such as goats or sheep as payment, a government minister has said.

The country’s education minister Lazarus Dokora told the pro-government Sunday Mail newspaper that schools will have to show flexibility when it comes to demanding tuition fees from parents, and that they should accept not only livestock, but also services and skills. “If there is a builder in the community, he/she must be given that opportunity to work as a form of payment of tuition fees,” the paper quoted him as saying.

Some schools are already accepting livestock as payments, the Sunday Mail reports.

A ministry official clarified Dr Dokora’s comments: “Parents of the concerned children can pay the fees using livestock. That is mostly for rural areas, but parents in towns and cities can pay through other means; for instance, doing certain work for the school.”

It follows a move last week where Zimbabwe allowed people to use their livestock, such as goats, cows and sheep, to back bank loans. Under legislation introduced in parliament this week, borrowers would be allowed to register “movable” assets, including motor vehicles and machinery, as collateral, the BBC’s World Business Report said.

According to the Bulawayo24 news portal, Zimbabwe’s worsening cash crisis means that people frequently spend hours queueing at banks to withdraw cash. The government says the shortage is due to people taking hard currency out of the country, but critics say it’s due to lack of investment and rising unemployment, Bulawayo24 says.

Social media has met the goats-for-fees idea with a mixture of scorn and gallows humour. Zimbabwean novelist Tsitsi Dangarembga tweeted “If we had been told in 1970 ‘We are fighting to introduce cattle and goats as currency. Please help & die for this’ what would we have said?”; while another Twitter user – recognising the fact that not all farm animals are born equal – asked “Can I get a job as a goat evaluator?”

Nairaland / General / Wilfred Ndidi Would Submit Transfer Request To Force Manchester Utd Move by sharpboyus(m): 8:12pm On Apr 07, 2017
Leicester City midfielder Wilfred Ndidi would hand in a transfer request if it helped to secure a move to Manchester United, the player’s agent has claimed.

The 20-year-old, who was signed from Genk for a reported £17million in January, has played a key role in the Premier League champions’ resurgent form under manager Craig Shakespeare.

Speculation has mounted that Ndidi could move on during the next transfer window, with United touted as a possible destination as Jose Mourinho looks to bolster a midfield that has looked short on depth this season.

And his agent, Hakeem Bello, would not expect the Nigeria international to reject advances from Old Trafford.

“Ndidi won’t say no to Manchester United,” he told Owngoalnigeria.com. “I can proudly tell you that if a bid is launched for him, he will most likely ask Leicester City for a transfer.

“We’re talking Manchester United, you know, the biggest and most successful in England. That’s a no-brainer. Ndidi won’t turn down Man United, anyone willing to bet?”

Shakespeare admitted this week that such speculation came as little surprise, but expressed his confidence that Ndidi would not leave.

“I have no problem with speculation, but we have our best players tied up,” he said.

“Of course, there can always be bids, we can always turn them down. But football is football – you’ll always get bids for good players.

“It is vitally important we keep our young players. Speaking to Wilfred, he is very happy here.

“He knows that we have given him the opportunity and I am sure that he will be a player here for a long, long time.”

Nairaland / General / A Dj Jailed For A Year For Re-mixing Muslim Call To Prayer by sharpboyus(m): 2:12pm On Apr 07, 2017
A Tunisian court has handed a British DJ a twelve months jail term in absentia after he played a remixed recording of the Muslim call to prayer, a judicial source said.

Dax J, who left Tunisia after last weekend's set in the northeastern town of Hammamet, was sentenced to ‘6 months for public indecency and 6 months for offending public morality ', said Ylyes Miladi, a spokesman of a court in the nearby town of Grombalia.

The court dismissed charges from the nightclub owner and an organiser behind the big event in the coastal resort, nevertheless the prosecution has appealed saying the 2 must have checked what the DJ could be playing, he added.

A video of the alleged incident shared widely online since Sunday shows clubbers dancing to music which includes the call to prayer. It sparked a storm of debate on social media.

On Monday, authorities announced they'd closed the nightclub.

The DJ has issued an apology, as have the organisers of the event.

Tunisia's religious affairs ministry has said: ‘Mocking the opinions and religious principles of Tunisians is totally unacceptable.'

A bus driver has avoided jail after he spent a night drinking vodka and margaritas before going to work and crashing his bus – into a house.

And scientists are willing to pay for you £13,000 to accomplish it, according to French newspaper 20 Minutes.
The Institute for Space Medicine and Physiology in Toulouse wants people to accomplish it – to discover the results of prolonged weightlessness on the body.
You will need to help keep one shoulder touching the bed constantly (yes, including while pooing and weeing).
Half the group will require drugs to counteract the results of weightlessness – another won’t.
The theory is that prone for that long will mimic the results of being weightles on the body.
Dr Arnaud Beck, coordinating doctor, says, ‘The thought of this study is to replicate the weightlessness of the International Space Station (ISS).
‘During the initial two weeks our scientists is going to do a complete series of tests and measurements on the volunteers. This is followed by a 60-day period during which they have to stay static in bed, the top slightly inclined downwards at less than six degrees.’

Nairaland / General / Nigeria Military Admits Boko Haram Leader Abubakar Shekau Is Alive. by sharpboyus(m): 12:01pm On Mar 30, 2017
Nigeria’s government has said that the longtime leader of militant group Boko Haram, Abubakar Shekau, continues to be at large, despite previous repeated claims it had killed him.

Nigerian Defense Minister Mansur Dan Ali told reporters in the capital Abuja on Tuesday that Shekau was “on the run” and likely hiding out in a Boko Haram enclave in the Sambisa Forest, one of many group’s last remaining bases in the northeast Nigerian state of Borno.

“We will be patrolling and ransacking that forest for the whereabouts of Shekau,” said Ali, according to Reuters.“We won’t relax, we are on him.”

Shekau took over leadership of Boko Haram following the group’s founder, Mohammed Yusuf, died in Nigerian police custody in 2009. Under Shekau’s leadership, the group has fought a dangerous war from the Nigerian government, killing thousands, displacing millions and making a humanitarian crisis in northeastern Nigeria. The group split into two factions in 2016, one led by Shekau and another by Abu Musab al-Barnawi, who was appointed by the Islamic State militant group (ISIS) in 2016.

Nairaland / General / 6 Types Of Relationship You Need To Experience Before You Consider Marriage by sharpboyus(m): 11:43am On Mar 27, 2017
Marriage is just a serious commitment.

You’re basically saying you want to spend the others of your daily life with this one person.

They’ll satisfy your entire needs, and whatever life may throw at you both, you’ll weather the storm and complete it together.

When you have unearthed that soulmate, then that’s great – off you go down the aisle to state ‘I actually do ‘.

But if you have not had much relationship experience, then hold your horses.

Don’t accept that ring you are being offered, don’t say ‘I actually do’to anybody, and get back to the planet of casual flings and sex with people you’ve met through dating apps.

Saving yourself for marriage is just a concept I could understand and respect – and fair play to the ones that can achieve this and have an effective marriage.

But it’s advantageous to enter into a relationship with The One knowing that you have experienced a range of situations, had your heart broken a few times, maybe dumped a few people. how else will you know what you truly want from a partner, and what you can let them have in return?

Here are the six kinds of relationship I believe you need to experienced before considering getting married.

1 Friends With Benefit Relationship

2 Long Distance Relationship

3 Online Dating

4 One Night Stand

5 House Mate/colleague
