Eleven Dallas law enforcement officers were shot, four fatally, on Thursday by what is believed to be two snipers who opened fire during a demonstration downtown over recent police shootings in Minnesota and Louisiana, the Dallas police chief said. The snipers fired from an elevated positions on police officers minutes before 9 p.m. CT, according to Dallas Police Chief David Brown. He described the shootings as “ambush style.” “We believe that these suspects were positioning themselves in a way to triangulate on these officers from two different perches in garages in the downtown area, and planned to injure and kill as many law enforcement officers as they could,” Brown said at a news conference — noting that some were shot in the back. A police SWAT team was engaged in a shootout with one of the suspects, and the suspect was taken into custody, police said at around 11:30 p.m. local time. Police had distributed a photo of a person of interest, and police said that person has turned himself in. Brown said police believe the suspects may have threatened to have plant a bomb in the downtown area, and were in contact with the FBI and federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. A “suspicious package” was found near where the suspect arrested was taken into custody, police said. Dallas police said they followed and stopped a car on a highway after an officer saw someone throw a camouflage bag into a Mercedes and speed off, and were questioning two people inside. It wasn’t clear that the car or occupants were involved. Police initially said three officers were killed, two others were in surgery and three were in critical condition. Dallas police later announced that a fourth officer died. A civilian was also wounded, authorities said. Around 800 people were at the demonstration, and around 100 police officers were assigned to the event and the surrounding area, Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings said. The shooting occurred after the demonstration ended and as a march was taking place. “At 8:58, our worst nightmare happened,” Rawlings said. “It is a heartbreaking moment for the city of Dallas, Rawlings said. A person at the protest said they were “making our second lap” when gunfire erupted. “We heard shots, we smelled gunpowder, and that’s when everything got really intense and surreal,” the witness told MSNBC. “We just started to run and grab kids,” he said. Several hundred people had gathered at park and march Thursday in reaction to the police shootings of Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge Tuesday and Philando Castile in a St. Paul suburb. The demonstration in Dallas was one of several held in cities across the county Thursday, most of them peacefully. In Saint Paul, Minnesota, a crowd estimated to be more than a thousand stronggathered outside a school where one of those men killed, Philando Castile, worked as a kitchen supervisor. I n Baton Rouge, Louisiana mourners gathered in a “second line” parade for Alton Sterling, who was killed by police on Tuesday in an incident that was recorded on video by a bystander. The Department of Justice Civil Rights Division is investigating that shooting. “It can be any brother or sister out here. This ain’t just started; they’ve been killing us,” Chermicka Brown, a friend of Sterling’s who joined protesters outside the store where he was shot, told NBC affiliate WVLA in Baton Rouge. Hundreds of people gathered in New York City’s Union Square before groups marched through parts of Manhattan. Police said they made arrests in Times Square, but a number was not immediately available. “It’s the definition of insanity,” Michael Houston, a 20-year-old student in New York, told The Associated Press. “How can we expect anything to be different when nothing changes?” Both shootings were recorded on video. “It disrupts and it crumbles all of the progress that’s been made; it’s unfortunate,” Andre T. Mitchell, the founder of a Brooklyn-based group that works toward improving relations between the community and the police, told NBC New York. “It just sets us back.” “It’s supposed to be innocent until proven guilty. But the way I see it, it’s murder first and ask questions later,” another protester in New York, Lawrence Amsterdam, 35, told the AP. There were also demonstrations in Washington, D.C., Atlanta and Seattle. Protests were scheduled in Oakland, California, Thursday. Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton said at a news conference earlier Thursday that he was “appalled” by the shooting death of Castile, and said that had he been white he likely wouldn’t have been shot. http://lailamedia.com/11-dallas-officers-shot-4-dead-in-shooting/

A man has been found guilty of murder following a fatal stabbing in Islington. Uchechukwu Ejimonye, 20 (16.10.95) of Roth Walk, N7 was today, Wednesday, 22 June found guilty at the Old Bailey in connection with the death of 17-year-old Vasilaki Kakko in Holloway. He will be sentenced on Thursday, 23 June. Detective Inspector Mick Norman, from the Met’s Homicide and Major Crime Command, said: “What started as an evening out with friends quickly escalated into a moment of extreme violence. Whilst it is unclear what led Ejimonye to fatally stab Vasso, it is obvious to most people that there is never any excuse to take someone else’s life…” On 23 November 2015, police were called at approximately 20:50hrs to reports that a man had been stabbed on Yoke Close, close to North Road, N7. The London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance also attended and Vasilaki – known as Vasso to family and friends – who was from Newington Green was pronounced dead at the scene at 21:22hrs. A post-mortem examination held at Whittington Hospital Mortuary on 25 November 2015 gave cause of death as a stab wound to the neck. Detectives from the Homicide and Major Crime Command launched an investigation and quickly established that Vasso had been socialising with a small group of acquaintances in a small public square. Without explanation, one of these men produced a knife and stabbed him in the neck before running away. The man was later identified as Ejimonye. He was traced by officers to the Bognor Regis area where he was arrested with the assistance of colleagues from Sussex Police on 30 November 2015. He was transferred to London and charged the following day. http://lailamedia.com/nigerian-uchechukwu-ejimonye-convicted-or-murder/

Rev. Ayokunle, the current national president of Nigerian Baptist Convention, will take over leadership of the Christian umbrella body from Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor. The election was conducted in good spirit at the National Ecumenical Center, Abuja. Mr. Ayokunle defeated top contender for the post, Joseph Otubu of the Motailatu Church Cherubim and Seraphim Movement, MCCSW, with 54 votes to 28. The result of the polls was announced by the immediate past president of the body, Mr. Oritsejafor, who then declared Mr. Ayokunle as his successor. The immediate task before the clergyman is to unite the body and make it speak with one voice. It will be recalled that the Catholic Church, under the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), had threatened to pull out of the umbrella body over disillusionment with the present state of affairs. The notoriously happy clappy white garment churches have been having a hard time keeping in line with the noise pollution requirements in London as councils (local authority) are inundated with residents complaints on the noise these churches make especially during the early hours of Saturday. The latest church to fall short of the noise level requirement is Celestial Church of Christ, Seventh Year Parish in Grays, Essex. The resident pastor, Akinseye Iyun, has been fined £230 for regularly holding ‘unbearably’ loud sermons until 4.00 a.m. According to the petition, the pastor infuriated neighbours with the noise up to four times a week. Local residents complained to the council about loud drumming and chanting but the pastor claimed the church was sound-proofed. However, after investigation and following several ignored warnings from Thurrock Borough Council, Iyunwas charged and prosecuted on May 25th 2016 at Basildon Magistrates’ court. Iyun, 38, of Brunel Close, Tilbury, admitted that as the Pastor of the Celestial Church of Christ in Bridge Road, Grays, he was in breach of noise abatement notice. The court heard how Iyun and the church had been given noise nuisance advice before a noise abatement notice was served in the early hours of 31 January, 2015. It came following the witnessing of a statutory noise nuisance by Thurrock Council Environmental protection officers. The court was told most of the council’s advice visits were made during the weekend and out of hours, especially during last summer and a breach of the notice was witnessed in October 2015. In November, a breach of notice letter was hand-delivered to the church, following further visits and numerous residents’ complaints about loud amplified music, particularly drumming and chanting over a speaker system. Though Iyun was interviewed under caution in December, the noise and complaints continued. Gavin Dennett, Thurrock Council’s environmental health and trading standards manager, said: “Our environmental protection officers are prepared for any further breaches of notice and will apply for a warrant and forfeiture of sound equipment if the noise nuisance is witnessed again. “The peace and tranquillity of local people was being disturbed on a regular basis and this shows the council will act as and when necessary. “The magistrates said, of course, he and his church were entitled to celebrate, but not in a way that disregards the local community and certainly not in breach of the noise abatement notice. “As leader of the church, he should make sensible arrangements that people can rest and enjoy their homes in the way he and his congregation would like to enjoy their church.” Iyun was fined £230 with a £23 victim surcharge and Thurrock Council was awarded full costs of £988.50, totalling £1,241.50. Magistrates also considered the seizure of the church’s noise-making equipments but decided against it. However, Iyun was warned that should he and the church be recalled to the court for noise nuisance, the matter would be taken more seriously. http://lailamedia.com/white-garment-church-fined-230-in-uk-for-noise-pollution/

England youth international Seyi Ojo has turned down an offer from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to play for the Nigeria U-23s at the Olympics in Rio, Owngoalnigeriacom can reveal. Ojo was contacted by a board member of the NFF Barrister Chris Green on the orders of the coach of Nigeria U-23s Samson Siasia but after speaking with the family of the 18-year-old he failed to convince them regarding a switch of nationality for the lad who has played for England at two-age levels. The parents of Ojo made it known to Green that their son is however open to the idea of playing for Nigeria in the future but at this stage of his career it's best for him to focus on his club career Last season he was recalled from his loan deal with English Championship side Wolverhampton Wanderers by Liverpool to provide cover for their first team after injuries left them short in key areas in their forward line. He ended up making a total of 11 appearances for the Reds in all competitions with one goal to his name as they ended up as runners' up in the Europa League after losing 3-1 to Sevilla in the final. http://lailamedia.com/rio-2016-olympics-seyi-ojo-rejects-nigeria/

The Stanley Cup Playoffs are currently in full swing, with the Pittsburgh Penguins and San Jose Sharks face-off for a chance to be this year’s Stanley Cup Champions. In a potential seven-game series, emotions are at an all-time high and anything is possible. This uncertainty is enough to keep us on the edge of our seats regardless of which team we support. From the moment the puck drops, a rush of adrenaline overtakes our body all the way up until the last buzzer sounds. So, what exactly happens to our mind and body during the most crucial moments that have and will come to define sports history? The answer: A lot. Monkey See, Monkey Do: The Brain On Watching Sports The spectating brain is also a playing brain when it comes to sports. When we're watching sports, it feels as if we're actually playing in the game. We begin to place ourselves in the "athlete's shoes" thanks to mirror neurons primarily found in the right side of the brain. These cells allow us to reflect and connect to someone else’s movements without verbal communication. “This phenomenon allows a feeling of connection, and community without verbal communication or the need to directly talk to the pro athlete who just won the World Series with a grand slam,” Dr. Jesse Hanson, clinical director of the Helix Healthcare Group, told Medical Daily. Previous studies have found that when we see a familiar action, our mirror neurons activate and fire for exactly as long as the observed action. This is what allows us to instantly understand the action, its goal, and even the emotions linked to it. For example, if we're watching a strenuous action, mirror neurons will get excited, and lead to an increase in our heart and respiration rate. In a 2008 study, researchers at the University of Rome recruited 10 professional basketball players; 10 expert watchers, including basketball journalists and coaches; and 10 students who never played basketball, to observe the influence mirror neurons had on motor skills — the precise movement of muscles with the intent to perform a specific action such as jumping or running.
