Nairaland / General / Photos From Notting Hill Carnival. by sharpboyus(m): 7:10am On Aug 29, 2016
The Notting Hill Carnival began today with the colourful and messy J’ouvert parade – a Caribbean tradition
Revellers took to streets, throwing paint, mud, chocolate or powder at each other while dancing to music
It is said the tradition recognises the need of humans to let go of daily worries, if only just for a short time
Later in the day, young performers with flamboyant costumes danced to music in the Children’s Parade
Revellers have taken to the streets of the Notting Hill Carnival at sunrise today to celebrate an ancient Caribbean tradition with a splash of colour.
Just on sunrise at 6am, early morning partygoers threw a streety party – and then threw paint, mud, chocolate, powder and even oil at each other while dancing to music.
Known as the J’ouvert celebration – derived from the French term Jour ouvert, meaning ‘opening of the day’ – the event is a traditional procession that still takes place in countries such as Trinidad & Tobago.

It is said the tradition recognises the need of humans to let go of daily worries, if only just for a short time.
The parade comes as police officers with special skills for recognising the faces of offenders will be monitoring the carnival in a crackdown on crime.
The ‘super-recognisers’ will be inside a CCTV control room seeking out both offenders committing crimes and anyone with bail conditions which ought to stop them from attending the event.
It is one of a number of measures the Met will be taking to ensure visitors from all over the country can stay safe and enjoy themselves during the carnival, which will be marking its 50th anniversary on Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday.
After the colourful Caribbean tradition, another parade was held in the morning for Children’s Day, and Monday will be the traditional Grand Finale.
The force will also be trialling a facial recognition system to help identify wanted offenders, by using cameras which scan the faces of those passing by and flag up potential matches against a database of custody
Police tips for staying safe at the carnival include:
Checking public transport in advance using the TfL website to avoid stations which may be closed or exit-only;
Going with the flow of the crowd, instead of against it, even if police mark out a longer route. Officers will also be handing out maps of the area at the event;
Having a set meeting place in case you lose family or friends, rather than rely on mobile phones;
Avoiding bringing valuables or too much cash and always being conscious to keep them out of sight, to avoid tempting opportunistic thieves;
Staying alert all the way home, even when the party is over.
After the early morning J’ouvert parade, the colourful street scenes continued with a Children’s Parade.
Performers with amazing costumes marched the streets of Notting Hill with flamboyant styles on display as they danced along the carnival route to the hypnotic rhythms provided by the mobile sound systems or steel bands.
Police have also asked people to be on the lookout for a missing teenager, who they believe may attend the carnival.
Veronica Sbircea, 15, was last seen around Brixton Road in south London on the afternoon of Thursday July 28.
Veronica, who sometimes goes by the name of Rachel, went missing from Kettering, Northamptonshire, but is originally from London. She is described as white, 5ft and with long straight black hair and brown eyes.
Detective Inspector Stuart Hitchon of Northants Police said: ‘It’s very concerning that for someone who is very active on social media and was seen on public transport several times in the 24 hours before she went missing, there is absolutely nothing since.
‘This clear absence of any activity is very worrying and we really need her to make contact.’

Nairaland / General / Whatsapp Is About To Hand Over One Of YOUR Biggest Secrets To Facebook by sharpboyus(m): 12:01pm On Aug 26, 2016
Users given 30 days to decide whether they want to give Mark Zuckerberg even MORE private information

If you met Mark Zuckerberg in a nightclub and you didn’t know he was a billionaire, would you give him your phone number?

Regardless of your answer, it turns out you might not have a choice in the matter.

WhatsApp has just announced the first update to its privacy settings in four years and revealed that it’s handing over all its users’ phone numbers to Facebook.

You’ll have 30 days to decide if you’re alright with this plan or whether it’s time to ditch WhatsApp for good.

Facebook is famous for collecting a huge amount of information about its user and knows 98 very personal things about people who use the social network.

A WhatsApp spokesman said: “While WhatsApp will continue to operate as a separate service from Facebook, we plan to begin sharing some information that will allow us to coordinate more in the months ahead and improve experiences across services.

“For example, once people accept the updated terms and privacy policy, we will share some of their account info with Facebook, such as the phone numbers people use to sign up for WhatsApp, along with how often people are using our service.”

WhatsApp said that handing over your digits to Zuck and co. would help fight spam and even allow businesses to communicate with you directly.

In a blog post, a spokeswoman for the messaging app said: “Whether it’s hearing from your bank about a potentially fraudulent transaction, or getting notified by an airline about a delayed flight, many of us get this information elsewhere, including in text messages and phone calls.

Mark Zuckerberg's social network knows A LOT about its users

“We want to test these features in the next several months, but need to update our terms and privacy policy to do so.”

Of course, the update will also allow Facebook to clobber you with adverts and line its own pockets in the process.

WhatsApp added: “Let’s say that you sign up for your local flower shop’s mailing list using the same mobile phone number that you use for your WhatsApp account, and the flower shop decides to advertise on Facebook, you may see their ads on Facebook.”

It continued: “By coordinating more with Facebook, we’ll be able to do things like track basic metrics about how often people use our services and better fight spam on WhatsApp.

“And by connecting your phone number with Facebook’s systems, Facebook can offer better friend suggestions and show you more relevant ads if you have an account with them.

“For example, you might see an ad from a company you already work with, rather than one from someone you’ve never heard of.”

Nairaland / General / Nigerian Woman Was Robbed As She Made Her Way To Hospital To Give Birth In Uk by sharpboyus(m): 4:05pm On Aug 25, 2016
Patience Chukwu approached by man while on way to Homerton hospital

He wrested her phone from her hand while she was talking to her sister

Thug then dragged Ms Chukwu along the road as she clung onto his bike

He then punched her three times as she pleaded for him to stop the attack

Ms Chukwu taken to hospital where baby had no heartbeat but survived

A pregnant woman was robbed as she made her way to hospital to give birth in a shocking attack which left her newborn baby fighting for his life.

Patience Chukwu, 40, was in labour and making her way to Homerton Hospital, north east London, when she stopped and leaned against a wall so she could catch her breath.

But, as she was talking to her sister on her mobile, a thug riding a BMX approached the expectant mother and tried to snatch her Samsung Galaxy.

The man then launched a 'senseless' attack on the pregnant mother, beating her repeatedly as she pleaded with him to stop.

The attack was so brutal that, when she arrived at hospital, her baby was found to have no heartbeat.

He was then forced to stay in intensive care for one week while doctors battled to save his life.

Speaking about the horrific attack, she told the Evening Standard: 'I never expected that a heavily pregnant woman in labour would be robbed. My belly would have been huge.

'As he was robbing me, I was begging him: "Please, I'm in labour, please". That boy is wicked and I want them to catch him before he attacks someone else.'

Ms Chukwu had left her home in north London to catch a bus to the hospital when she was confronted by the man as she spoke to her sister - who was her birthday partner - on the phone.

She initially thought he was asking for directions, but he suddenly snatched the phone from her hand.

Ms Chukwu then attempted to fight back, grabbing the hood on the thief's jumper to stop him fleeing from the scene.

But, as she did, she was dragged along the street behind his bike.

Ms Chukwu pleaded with the man to stop, telling him she was pregnant, but he raised his right arm to swing at her pregnant stomach.

In a desperate bid to shield her unborn child, Ms Chukwu bent forward, taking the punch on her head. The thug then punched her twice more in the face, causing her glasses to crash to the floor, before fleeing from the scene.

Ms Chukwu managed to call out to a man who was walking by, who tried to chase the culprit, but could not catch him.

Police have released an efit of the thug who launched the attack and are appealing for the public's help in tracking him down

Police have released an efit of the thug who launched the attack and are appealing for the public's help in tracking him down

Ms Chukwu added: 'This whole incident has upset me more than I can describe', she said. 'I already suffered from anxiety before this, and now I am scared whenever a bike goes past me - it's affecting me living my life.'

Neighbours in Leadale Street, Stamford Hill - where the attack took place - rushed to give Ms Chukwu a chair and water before calling police and paramedics.

The expectant mother, who already has a daughter, aged four, was rushed to hospital by ambulance where the baby boy was found to have no heartbeat.

Her son Kamsi Kishi then had to be induced and was kept in critical care unit for a week due to complications before being allowed home. He now suffers from seizures as a result of the attack.

'I was really looking forward to a happy, healthy birth, and now I cry whenever I see my son jerking in his sleep from the stress that was caused when he was in the womb,' she said. 'I worry every day whether he will be ok.'

The attacker is described as a black man, aged between 18 and 20. He is described as short, of medium build, with shaven hair and brown eyes.

Witnesses say he was wearing a grey hooded top and has a slim face with pronounced cheek bones and rough, pock-marked complexion.

Detective Inspector Paul Ridley, from Hackney CID, admitted that the efit was their last line of enquiry and that they had 'exhausted everything'.

'Such a violent, unprovoked attack on a busy street in the mid-morning is fortunately rare, but has had devastating consequences for Patience and her son,' he said.

The attack took place in Leadale Road, Stamford Hill, north London, on June 26
'All the robber got away with was a mobile phone, but the impact his actions have had will last this family a lifetime.

'We really need the public's help to track down this man. We believe that the e-fit shows a good likeness of him, so I would appeal to anyone who knows him to get in contact with us and tell us who he is.

'The man who did this will have family and friends who will know who he is and I would ask those people to come forward and tell us where to find him. He was undoubtedly aware that she was pregnant - to use such violence was appalling and senseless.'

He added: 'There may also be other people who were in Leadale Road that day who we have not yet spoken to, who may have seen the attack or the suspect getting away on his bike.

'His escape route is near to the River Lea so people walking their dogs or runners may have seen him fleeing. Please get in touch as your information may well help.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the investigation team on 07795 122 325 or 101 and request Hackney CID. To remain anonymous, call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Nairaland / General / Vietnamese Woman Cut Off Hand And Foot So She Could Claim £115,000 In Insurance by sharpboyus(m): 12:06pm On Aug 25, 2016
Ly Thi N thought she would gain £115,000 by claiming on her health insurance and pretending to be hit by a train

A VIETNAMESE woman persuaded her friend to cut off her hand and foot so she could claim money in a twisted insurance scam.

In May, the 30-year-old woman, Ly Thi N, was found near a railway crossing in theVietnamese capital, Hanoi.

A supposed bystander called Doan Van D called an ambulance after allegedly finding the woman by chance.

However, detectives became suspicious of the man’s story, especially after looking into Ly’s personal affairs.

The Thanhiennews website said her business was struggling and she was short of cash before the “accident.”

She eventually confessed to police that she had paid Doan Dan D 50million dong (£1,660) to cut off the two limbs and play along with her ruse.

Ly thought she would gain £115,000 by claiming on her health insurance and pretending to be hit by a train.

Pictures published by the official police newspaper showed the woman three months late with her wounds healed.

The case provoked a heated debate on social media in Vietnam.

foot1_zhzz

Facebook user Ly Phan posted: “A very typical case of insurance fraud. The kind of joke that only happens in Vietnam.

“Lost 50million, one hand, one leg, and now you are at risk to go to jail. No benefit at all.”

Other users sympathised with the woman.

Thanh Phuong Quynh Le said: “She may be going bankrupt or urgently need money to do something like that. It is never easy to cheat insurance companies.”

The woman was found by a railway line in Vietnam's capital, Hanoi

Hoa Nguyen also felt sympathy: “How destitute must a person be to do such a thing?”

Le Van Luan, of the Hanoi Bar Association, told the BBC it would be difficult to charge the pair under the penal code.

He said: “We need a new article for this kind of fraud. Her self-harm is horrible and extremely rare.”

A man then tried to attack the family and attempted to rape the mother
Kutlwano, six, stepped in to defend his mother and slapped the man
But the attacker used a broken bottle to stab the boy and he died
A six-year-old boy has been stabbed to death in South Africa as he tried to defend his mother from a violent rapist.
Kutlwano Garesape was reportedly struck with a broken bottle as he attempted to stop the man attacking his 42-year-old mother Segomotso.
The violent murder happened as Mrs Garesape was walking Kultwano and his older brother Thabiso to school near the town of Jan Kempdorp in South Africa’s Northern Cape.
The mother said they were close to the school when she suddenly noticed a man following them.
She explained: ‘The next moment I felt someone grab me by the shoulder, pulling on a school bag. Thabiso was screaming: “Watch out, he is going to stab you with a bottle.”
‘Kutlwano slapped the man across the face and told him to let go of me. He kept on screaming “let go of my mommy, it is my mommy”, while slapping and kicking the man.
‘I could feel that the man was pulling up my skirt with his other hand and realised that he wanted to rape me in front of my children.’
The attacker slapped Kutlwano and he fell to the ground when Mrs Garesape then managed to push her attacker away.
She added: ‘I saw that he now wanted to attack my son. I frantically looked for a weapon to use against him but could not find any.
‘When Kutlwano fell to the ground, I could see that the man was strangling him. Then his arm went up and down and I realised that he was stabbing my son with the bottle.
‘I heard my child crying out for me and I saw him trying to defend himself with his hands. The man just kept on stabbing him.
‘I felt helpless and ran to the main road in an attempt to find help… all the cars just drove past as I cried and screamed that a man is killing my child.

‘He asked me to kiss him and I did. He then stretched out his hand to his brother.
‘When I held him to my chest again, his arms fell to the side and I knew he was dead’

Meanwhile, hundreds of passengers were trapped in sweltering carriages after a high-speed train became stranded without water or electricity.

The travellers were unable to open the carriage doors, reports said, and they baked in the carriages under the mid-day sun.

Their situation was worsened after the train’s air-conditioning system stopped working due to the power outage.

According to reports, it was not until 2pm – around two hours after they had broken down – that the train was operational once more, taking the travellers to their destination.

According to officials at China Railway High-speed, the malfunction was caused by the collapse of a 220 kilovolt cable on the tracks.

Nairaland / General / Breaking: Former Premier League Ace Dalian Atkinson Dies After Being Tasered by sharpboyus(m): 2:58pm On Aug 15, 2016
Police were called to a home after after receiving reports that people were concerned for the safety of a person in Telford.

Officers from West Mercia Police raced to the scene at 1.30am this morning and a Taser was used on a 48-year-old man.

He received medical attention after going into cardiac arrest but was pronounced dead at around 3am.

The incident has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).

In a statement the force said: “Upon arrival Taser was deployed and a 48-year-old man, who subsequently received medical attention, was pronounced dead at approximately 3am.

“West Mercia Police are unable to comment any further as the incident has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) as is normal procedure and will assist the IPCC with their enquiries.”

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “We were called by West Mercia Police to an address in Meadow Close in the Trench area of Telford at about 1.45am this morning.

Taser death

“An ambulance was dispatched and upon arrival found a man who had been Tasered.

“As he was being conveyed to Princess Royal Hospital, his condition deteriorated and he went into cardiac arrest.

“Despite the efforts of the crew and hospital staff, it was not possible to save him and he was confirmed dead at hospital, shortly after arrival.”

It follows the death of ex-soldier Spencer Beynon in June, after he was Tasered by police in Llanelli, South Wales, after stabbing a dog and then himself.

Friends said he had suffered mental health problems after leaving the military.

Last year police use of Tasers, which are intended as a non-lethal weapon, went up slightly towards the end of 2015 with 10,329 uses by forces in England and Wales, a two per cent rise on the previous year.

However, of those, 19 per cent (1,921) were discharges; a decrease of three per cent from the previous year.

Nairaland / General / Women Are Risking Their Lives On Lethal Backstreet Butt Ops By Getting Injected by sharpboyus(m): 3:51pm On Aug 14, 2016
Those who survive are not in the clear and are often left with pain and disfigurement years later

LIKE her idols Beyoncé and Nicki Minaj, Kelly Mayhew was a confident young woman who embraced her curves.

Her Facebook feed was full of photos of her happily posing and showing off her size-16 figure – one even had the caption: “Brains, beauty, boobs and booty!”

But then, on May 30 last year, Kelly and her figure made headlines when she tragically died after having illegal silicone injections in her bottom to make it look bigger. She was just 34.

The unidentified female black-market “surgeon” who injected the cosmetic filler into Kelly’s body in a basement apartment in Queens, New York, fled soon after her patient began convulsing and struggling to breathe during the procedure.

Just hours later, Kelly was pronounced dead.

In October, the New York City Medical Examiner ruled her death a homicide.

Systemic silicone emboli – the silicone clots that blocked Kelly’s blood vessels – were found to be the cause.

The unlicensed surgeon who killed her is still on the run.

It was Kelly’s sixth butt augmentation, and while at least the first was administered by a licensed doctor, subsequent procedures were not.

Kelly Mayhew died last year after having illegal silicone injections in her bottom

But what would make a bright young woman risk her life like that?

According to a former boyfriend, despite her Facebook declarations Kelly, who worked in TV, wasn’t as happy with her figure as she seemed.
“She would say to me: ‘I want things to fit right,’” her ex, who didn’t want to be named, said during an interview last June with website The Daily Beast.
“I would talk to her, but she continued to say her clothes don’t fit the way her body was shaped.”

Kelly Mayhew's 'surgeon' fled when she started convulsing during the procedure and is still on the run

Kelly's cause of death were silicone clots that blocked her blood vessels

Kelly wasn’t alone in trying to reshape her body with the help of a black-market industry.

The combination of a low price tag and the fact unlicensed practitioners are prepared to push the boundaries to get extreme results is too much for some to resist.

“Women are paying thousands to get silicone injections from rogue doctors in a quest to get the type of bottom Kim Kardashian-West would envy,” explains Dr Dionne Stephens, an associate professor in psychology at Florida International University.

In fact, Kelly was so desperate to have the procedure, thought to have cost around £1,200, that she drove seven hours with her mother
Latrice Mayhew-Lane, now 51, from her home in Suitland, Maryland, to Queens, New York, where the operation took place.

According to news reports, she wasn’t the only young woman going there to buy herself a new bottom.

It can be ten years later that people get infections, hardness, pain and disfigurement from backstreet buttock injections

The landlady of the block of apartments told the website DNAinfo: “I thought something was going on. Women were coming back and forth. Some of them had weird butts.”

Given that these illegal operations are carried out in non-clinical environments such as hotels, salon backrooms or someone’s home, with a conveyor-belt line of patients, sometimes in groups, they’ve earned the nickname “pump parties”.

While according to the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) there’s no record of this happening in the UK yet, unlicensed Botox parties have already hit our shores and experts predict that if we’re not vigilant, pump parties could be next.

“In the last year, I’ve noticed a 30-40% rise in women aged 25-40 asking about bum-enhancement procedures, including fat injections,” says UK-based consultant plasticsurgeon Paul Banwell.

“This could be just the tip of the iceberg. While pump parties don’t seem to be happening here just yet, it’s still a serious concern, as often these trends start in America before coming to Britain.

“We need to reinforce the message that any such procedure is a medical one and it’s vital to go to a recognised practitioner,” he says.

“There’s no justification – financial or otherwise – for having any cosmetic work done in a non-clinical environment.”

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) reported that bottom implants were the fastest growing type of cosmetic surgery in 2015 in
the US, up by 36% in just one year.

On average, one buttock procedure is being performed every 30 minutes by licensed doctors.

Women who have illegal procedures dont know what theyre being injected with - it can be anything from tyre sealant to cooking oil

Women who have illegal procedures don’t know what they’re being injected with – it can be anything from tyre sealant to cooking oil

But when it comes to backstreet booty jabs, one of the main dangers is the substances used for fillers – especially bearing in mind that even those administered by a qualified surgeon carry risks, such as the implant shifting or infection.

“You never know what’s being injected into you if you visit an unlicensed practitioner,” says Dr Constantino Mendieta, a Miami-based plastic surgeon known as Dr Butt due to his expertise in buttock enhancement.

“Some people are injected with cooking oil, others get tyre sealant or even the silicone that you can buy in hardware stores.”

However, the actual number of people who go to pump parties is unclear.

“People aren’t talking about it → because what the ‘doctors’ are using and the process are both illegal,” says Dionne.

“The only time we hear about these operations is when someone gets hurt or they die. But we didn’t hear about these 10 years ago – so we do know they’re increasing. Women are willing to risk it as they don’t think anything bad will happen to them. It always happens to someone else.”

British student Claudia Aderotimi died in 2011 after going to Philadelphia to have an illegal procedure in a cheap hotel room

British student Claudia Aderotimi died in 2011 after going to Philadelphia to have an illegal procedure in a cheap hotel room

British women are already risking everything to travel abroad for the “perfect” bum.

In February 2011, 20-year-old British student Claudia Aderotimi went to Philadelphia to have a £1,000 procedure performed in a cheap hotel room.

Her “surgeon” was Padge-Victoria Windslowe – a transsexual who dubbed herself the“Michelangelo of butt injections”.

However, Claudia suffered chest pains and breathing problems soon after her procedure and was rushed to hospital, where she later died. Windslowe received a sentence of between 10 and 20 years for causing her death.

According to Claudia’s friends, the dancer and choreographer dreamed of becoming a hip-hop video star.

“She loved to dance and had a drive to be famous,” said London talent scout Tee Ali at the time.

“The problem was she didn’t have a butt. She went to audition for one video shoot wearing fake booty pants and she got all the attention. When they found out it was fake, she didn’t get asked back.”

It’s our celeb-obsessed culture, experts say, that has contributed to the rising popularity of bigger bums.

“It’s not uncommon for patients now to ask for a Kim Kardashian-West bum,” admits Paul.

“They want to copy that look and without a doubt this is down to the rise of social media, especially if you think about how many body pictures celebrities upload daily. These days, surgeons need to be very circumspect and understand patients’ motivations and desires, while also being utterly honest about what procedures involve. It’s not as simple as just having something injected into your bum because you want to look like a Kardashian.”

Karima Gordon died eight days after an illegal procedure

Karima Gordon, from Atlanta, died when loose silicone travelled up to her lungs just days after she’d received an illegal £150 butt filler injection in March 2012 from transsexual Mississippi “‘nurse” Tracey Lynn Garner.

When the model eventually went to her local hospital a few days after the procedure complaining of breathing problems, no one knew what was wrong.

Seventy-two hours later, the 37 year old was dead.
Her sister Cyndee, 50, can still remember her mother calling to say Karima, who had a 16-year-old son called Khallid, was in hospital after complaining she wasn’t feeling well.

“At first we just thought maybe she had a stomach virus,” recalls Cyndee.

“But then her health quickly deteriorated and my family called to say she was on a breathing machine. I spent two days by Karima’s side until she died just after midnight on March 24. It was heartbreaking – and all so unnecessary.”

Her family only realised illegal buttock injections were the cause of Karima’s death after going through the text messages on her phone, which detailed her plans to have injections through to the crippling pains she began to suffer as she struggled to breathe.

Until then they had no idea she was even unhappy with her shape.

“I think she wanted to try and get the procedure done without us knowing,” says Cyndee, who still cries when she thinks about what happened to her little sister.

“I feel she was very naive and, I’m assuming, didn’t look into it as deeply as she should have, or maybe she just took the risk.”

In 2014 Tracey Lynn Garner was sentenced to life in prison for killing Karima.

She had no official training or licence to carry out such procedures and an investigator testified he found a bottle of silicone and syringes labelled “For veterinary use only” on her premises.

However, Garner is yet to stand trial for similar charges in the 2010 death of Marilyn Hale, 23, from Alabama.

While Karima, Kelly, Claudia and Marilyn paid the ultimate price for having backstreet buttock injections, even those who survive the procedure are not in the clear.

And no one knows this better than Dr Mendieta, who’s seen scores of women who’ve had botched bottom surgery come to him desperate for it to be corrected.

Dr Mendieta says that sometimes the only way to correct botched bottom injections is to remove the area completely, leaving crater-like holes

Dr Mendieta says that sometimes the only way to correct botched bottom injections is to remove the area completely, leaving crater-like holes

“The issue really is five to 10 years on when the product starts to react, when your body starts to spit it out and you get infections, hardness, pain and disfigurement of the buttock,” he explains, adding that sometimes the only way to correct it is to cut those areas out completely, leaving scars and crater-like holes.

“Many of these ladies are very image conscious, so it’s devastating psychologically, emotionally and sexually. But they come to me in utter desperation because they can no longer stand the pain.”

Following Karima’s death, her family decided to set up a foundation in her name to educate others about the risks of illegal black-market cosmetic enhancements.

“A lot of women just don’t realise the danger they’re putting themselves in,” explains Cyndee.

“But they need to know they really can die having these procedures. It’s just not worth it.”

Nairaland / General / Watch: Would You Say Yes To This Marriage Proposal? by sharpboyus(m): 11:02am On Aug 13, 2016
Social media encourages people to come up with more ridiculous engagement ideas
WHOEVER said romance was dead might actually have a point, as this is possibly one of the worst marriage proposals of all time.
A man decided to enlist the help of some balaclava-clad men to drag his girlfriend out of a car and push her to the ground.

It’s a mystery why Vlad, from Romania, decided to set the ambience with this terrifying scene.
While he was taking his girlfriend Alexandra out for a quick spin in the car, they were accosted by a “police ambush”.
As the pair drove through Brasov, the intimidating men, who were covered up by balaclavas, jumped out of a fake white ‘police’ van.
After claiming they were going to conduct a search, the gang immediately pulled Alexandra from the car and pushed her down onto the pavement.
It’s easy to see the horror on Alexandra’s face as the men hold her down into the tarmac and begin interrogating her.
One member of the balaclava gang shouted: “Do you know this man? Do you know what he has got in the boot?”
Dazed Alexandra is then pulled up by the neck and escorted around to the back of the car.
Instead of continuing the traumatic experience, Vlad diffused the tension by getting down on one knee with a ring in hand.
As Alexandra struggles to hold back tears, it finally dawns on her that the situation is an elaborate proposal.
After several seconds of laughter, Vlad eventually asks: “Will you marry me?” and Alexandra nods and quietly says: “Yes.”

Bizarrely, it seems that Alexandra was impressed with Vlad’s gesture, as the couple are currently in the process of planning their wedding.
Footage of the ‘romantic’ proposal was uploaded to social media, where it’s racked up over one million views in just a few days.

Shocking moment man is interviewed by heartless TV news reporter as he lies DYING by the roadside in El Salvador
SHOCKING video has emerged showing a journalist in Latin America interviewing a dying man on live TV.
The man was apparently hit by a truck on a motorway in El Salvador shortly before the interview took place.
News footage shows the shattered windscreen of a white truck parked up on the side of the road after a collision.
But the camera then bizarrely cuts to a close up of a shirtless man lying on his side on the ground.
The man is clearly in some pain, groaning as he lies on the grass.

But instead of helping, the heartless TV reporter from TVO Noticias thrusts a microphone in his face to interview him about what just happened.
The injured man mumbles: “They hit me and I’m hurting.”
The journalist asks if he saw the vehicle coming, to which he obviously replies that he didn’t.

He is then asked if he would want to go to hospital – before the reporter moves on to question: “Where were you going anyways?”
To make things worse, it is believed the man later died as a result of his injuries.

Nairaland / General / British Woman With No History Of Drug Use Died Of Heroin Overdose In Ghana Hotel by sharpboyus(m): 11:39am On Aug 12, 2016
Chairmain Adusah was discovered in bath by hotel staff in Koforidua

She had been staying there with her husband, Eric, a Christian pastor

He was charged with murder but case collapsed over lack of evidence

Open conclusion recorded in inquest at Essex Coroner's Court today

A pregnant British woman with no history of drug abuse died of acute heroin poisoning in a hotel room in Ghana, an inquest heard today.

Chairmain Adusah, 41, from Arbroath, Angus, was discovered in the bath by staff at Mac-Dic Royal Plaza Hotel in Koforidua, where she had been staying with her Ghanaian husband, Eric.

Mr Adusah, 28, a Christian pastor, was charged with his wife's murder in Ghana but the case collapsed due to lack of evidence - and an inquest has now been held at Essex Coroner's Court.

Mr Adusah was present at the hearing today along with Mrs Adusah's mother, Linda Speirs and stepfather Peter.

The court heard that the couple had checked into the hotel together after travelling to the country for work connected to Mr Adusah's church.

The pastor checked out of the hotel on March 18, 2015, and unverified allegations have since been made that Mr Adusah told staff not to disturb his wife, who was due to leave two days later. When Mrs Adusah failed to check out, hotel staff checked the room and discovered her body in the bathtub.

Authorities in Ghana discovered heroin, codine and morphine in her system. An interim autopsy report issued the week after she was found indicated a heroin overdose as a cause of death.

Doctor Charlotte Randall carried out a second post-mortem examination when Mrs Adusah's body was returned to the UK.

She told the court that she had found traces of heroin, codine and morphine but no evidence of assault or prolonged drug use.

Dr Randall said she could not ascertain the cause of death from her findings but did accept the findings from the earlier examination held in Ghana.

Mrs Abdusah's body had remained in Ghana while the case against husband was on-going but was later returned to Britain.

The pastor, a leader of Global Light Revival Ministries Church in North London, told the court: 'I have no idea what happened, I don't know how it got into her body, I never seen her do anything like that'.

Detective Chief Inspector Stuart Smith from Essex Police confirmed that there was no drug paraphernalia found at the scene or signs of how it was administered.

The attorney general in Ghana claimed there was no evidence connecting Mr Abdusah to his wife's death.

Mr Smith added: 'Mr Adusah was arrested and charged in Ghana and spent a number of months on remand there and on bail and they found no direct evidence linking him to the death of the deceased.

'In Britain we would call that insufficient evidence, I believe that it the correct decision.'

Senior Coroner for Essex Caroline Beasley-Muarry dismissed conclusions of unlawful killing, suicide or an accident due to lack of evidence.

She said: 'Because of the insufficient evidence for any of those conclusions I shall record an open verdict. We shall never quote know what happened there just is not evidence.'

Mrs Beasley-Muarry said this was a difficult and unusual case.

Addressing the family, she said: 'She [Mrs Adusah] clearly was a striking woman, attractive and with a bright future in front of her and was clearly much loved and I would again like to express my sympathies to you.'

Mr Adusah broke down in tears as he left the inquest, surrounded by parishioners. Mr and Mrs Speirs spoke outside the court following the conclusion.

Commenting on whether her daughter could have used heroine, she said: 'She would not have done it, we know that for a fact, she just would not have done it.'

Mr Speirs said the inquest was 'done well'. Mrs Speirs added: 'It didn't go into great details but we know, we know the rest.'

Mr Adusah was unavailable for comment after the hearing. His church in Tottenham describes itself as a growing international, multi-cultural Christian church and also has a branch in Edinburgh.

Nairaland / General / Mother Aborts 'mermaid' Child (pic) by sharpboyus(m): 7:48pm On Aug 11, 2016
Ultrasounds show a young mother was carrying a 'mermaid-like' foetus

Wu, 23, from China has decided to terminate her pregnancy

She was six months pregnant when she was examined by doctors

Doctors said she had sirenomelia, or 'Mermaid Syndrome'

A young mother has decided to terminate her pregnancy after finding out she was carrying a mermaid-like foetus in her womb.

The mum, 23-year-old Wu, was six months pregnant when she was examined by doctors in Yichang City, in Central China's Hubei Province.

Wu's scans showed that her unborn child did not have two legs, but instead had a 'tail' like growth.

The foetus also did not have a bladder and had a stunted liver, reports said.

Doctors at the hospital told Wu that the foetus was suffering from a condition known as sirenomelia, or 'Mermaid Syndrome', a rare congenital deformity in which the legs are fused together, giving them the appearance of a mermaid's tail.

Despite carrying the foetus for half a year, Wu decided to terminate her pregnancy after specialists estimated that the baby would only be able to survive for a few hours after birth.

The causes of Mermaid Syndrome are still a medical mystery, and it is said to occur only once in every 100,000 pregnancies.

Shiloh Pepin, an American dubbed 'Mermaid Girl', suffered one of the world's most well-documented cases of sirenomelia.

Despite undergoing 150 operations during her relatively short lifetime, she still passed away in 2009 at the age of 10.

Gordon Gotham was dragged to the ground by a Staffordshire bull terrier

Father-of-three said his toddler Thomas, two, has since had nightmares

A father-of-three had his testicles savaged by a Staffordshire bull terrier as he protected his toddler son and daughter from the vicious dog.
Gordon Gotham, from Liverpool, required hospital treatment after he was dragged to the ground by the terrier in Walton Hall Park last Tuesday.
The 47-year-old, who also suffered wounds to his legs and side, said his children Thomas, two, and Maisie, 14, had been left traumatised by the attack.
Thomas has had nightmares following the ordeal and has ‘woken up screaming about a big bad dog’.

The 47-year-old, who also suffered wounds to his legs and side, said his children Thomas, two, and Maisie, 14, had been left traumatised by the attack.
Thomas has had nightmares following the ordeal and has ‘woken up screaming about a big bad dog’.
Recalling the savage incident, Mr Gotham said: ‘My son was on his bike and they went across the fields doing races.
‘The dog came out of the bushes and started running towards the kids.
‘It was jumping up at my son and my daughter picked him up so it couldn’t get to him.
As you can imagine, I was running over shouting “get your f****** dog” to the owner.
‘I picked them both up so I had one in either arm and then it started biting me on my side.
‘It bit my privates but there was nothing I could do without putting the children down so I just had to let it bite me.
‘If it had got hold of my little boy it would have treated him like a rag doll.
‘It dragged me to the floor but I still had my kids in my arms, it was like a for-for-all on the ground.
‘I couldn’t see what was happening but my daughter must have been able to and all I could hear was her screaming “dad, dad”‘
Following the attack Mr Gotham rang the police but refused an ambulance and travelled to A&E on his own.
He was given a tetanus jab and a dose of anti-inflammatories but had to return to the doctors the next morning when the wounds began weeping.
The TV show floor manager, who also has a three-month-old daughter called Grace, said he takes his children to the park several times a week with partner Angela.
Police searched for the dog and the owners in the park but were unable to track them down.

He has slammed the dog’s owners for their lack of remorse following the attack and said they did not even apologise.
He recalled: ‘The owners were just walking over like nothing was happening.
‘They hit the dog on the nose and said “this has never happened before” and walked off.
‘I think I’ve got over the shock now, it’s more anger they didn’t apologise or even ask how we were.
‘The other night my son woke up screaming about a big bad dog.
‘Since the attack he won’t leave his mum’s side.
‘We are looking into talking to the doctor to maybe get some sort of counselling because we don’t want him to be afraid of all dogs from now on.
‘We’ve got a family member who has a dog so I’m thinking of taking the children to see it, we want them to know that not all dogs are like that.
‘It’s the dog I feel sorry for to be honest because if they do catch them it will be the dog that gets punished not the owners who showed no sympathy.
‘If it had been Angela with our three-month-old they wouldn’t have stood a chance.’
A recent study revealed injuries caused by dog attacks are more common in Merseyside than anywhere else in the country with 322 victims seeking medical treatment across 2014 and 2015.
A spokesman for Merseyside Police said: ‘It is a criminal offence to allow a dog to be dangerously out of control so we would appeal for anyone who can help us trace the owner to contact us with that information.
‘Police patrols did search the park for the dog and owner and neighbourhood officers will be keeping an eye out for it so that the owners can be spoken to about this incident.
‘Anyone walking their dog in our local parks needs to be mindful of their dog’s behaviour at all times and keep their pet on a lead if it is liable to be aggressive towards other park users.
‘We will not tolerate irresponsible dog ownership here in Merseyside.’

Sports / I Am Back Home At Manchester United: Paul Pobga by sharpboyus(m): 4:15pm On Aug 09, 2016
Paul Pobga says he feels like he has come back from an extended vacation as he returns 'home' to Manchester United.

Paul Pogba is delighted to be back at Old Trafford after sealing a mega return to Manchester United - the club he left for Juventus just four years ago.

France international Pogba left United as a teenager in search of senior football in 2012 and got a lot more than he bargained for at Juve, transforming himself into one of the world's premier midfielders, winning four Serie A titles among other honours.

But now, Pogba is happy to return to United after the deal to bring him "home" was completed on Tuesday.

"I feel like I went for a holiday and now I've come back home and I'm happy," Pogba told MUTV. "I think it's destiny. I would say it's destiny. First, my mum told me I would come back here.
"And I said 'You never know, we'll see', and also it is a big challenge for me to come back here.
"I started here and I came back to finish the job.

"They say, 'Your mum is always right', and obviously she was this time."

Pogba said he is not worried about the cost involved in bringing him back to United, dismissing any notion that he was proud to be the world's most expensive football after sealing a move rumoured to have cost United a total £90million.

I am only focussed on the pitch,” he said. “I want to be great, I want to be one of the best, I want to win titles, I want to achieve things and that is why I came here. To do this, to become one of the best and to win titles.
“I know this club has to win titles, this club is great to win titles, to win big things. That’s what I focus on. I’m ready to go and work on that and just kill it.”
As for the differences between the Pogba that left United as a 19-year-old on a free and the Pogba that returns as a 23-year-old and the world’s most expensive player, the Frenchman said: “Well, I was younger, now I am bigger and now I am taller!
“I was meant to come back here. I feel this.
“I always had this United thing in my heart and that’s why I came back and I’m happy.
“I have more experience now, I have won titles with Juventus and I’ve been playing with big players like I did when I started here and I’ve come back – not from the academy, I wanted to play somewhere else – but now I have come back as an adult with more experience and more games, so I think that’s the difference.”

Nairaland / General / Terrorist Attack In London by sharpboyus(m): 7:31am On Aug 04, 2016
A WOMAN in her 60s has been killed and five others injured in a bloody central London knife attack that police believe may be terror-related.
Witnesses described victims “screaming and covered in blood” following the rampage in which the woman – believed to be a Spanish speaker enjoying a hen do – was brutally knifed around 10.30pm last night.
A 19-year-old man was arrested at the scene after being tasered by police in Russell Square – just yards from where the 7/7 attacks bus bomb detonated in 2005.
Four women and one man were also injured in the horrific attack in Russell Square.
One witness described seeing another man ‘flee from the scene on a motorbike’ as police confirmed mental health was a likely factor.
They said: “I heard a scream, and then we went to the park and I saw a girl lying on the floor with blood coming from her back. Another girl had blood on her arm.
“They all spoke Spanish so I guess they were a group. I only saw the victim and the girl with the arm stabbed from that group.
“I just saw blood just next to her. She was lying on the floor with a friend hugging her.”
Anti-terror chief Mark Rowley, a Met Police Assistant Commissioner, said “mental health was a significant factor” in the attack but that “terrorism was still a line of enquiry”.
Speaking outside Scotland Yard, Commander Rowley said: “Police were called just after 10.30pm last night to reports of a man, armed with a knife, assaulting people in Russell Square, Camden.
“Armed officers arrived at the scene within five minutes, they discharged the Taser whilst confronting and arresting the suspect.
“Six people have been injured, including the one woman who sadly died at the scene, and the others have received various injuries.”
He added :“Early indications suggest that mental health is a significant factor in this case and that is one major line of inquiry.
“But of course at this stage we should keep an open mind regarding motive and, consequently, terrorism as a motivation remains but one line of enquiry for us to explore.”
The female victim, in her 60s, was treated at the scene but was pronounced dead not long after.
Police have said that it is “inappropriate at this time to give any more personal details about her”.
Lauren Britty, whose brother allegedly witnessed the attack, claimed on Twitter that the woman may have been part of a hen party.
Another witness has claimed that the women involved were with two men and that they were all speaking Spanish.
The condition of the other people injured in the incident is not yet known – nor is the nature of their injuries.
A receptionist at the nearby Imperial Hotel in Russell Square said: “We don’t know what’s going on.
“The police have been in the square since about 10.30pm.”
Additional police units have been deployed to the area.
Twenty six people were killed when Germaine Lindsay, 19, detonated a suicide bomb on a Piccadilly line Tube as it moved between King’s Cross station and Russell Square in July 2007.
Yesterday’s attack came on the same day that the Met announced it was to put more armed officers on public patrol as part of anti-terrorism plans.
On Sunday Metropolitan Police chief Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe warned that a terror attack in the UK was a case of “when, not if”.
Counter-terror police are also probing the attempted abduction of a serviceman at knifepoint from a road near RAF Marham in Norfolk on July 20.

Nairaland / General / Mum Jailed For Filming Home-made Porn Movies With Her Own Schoolboy SON by sharpboyus(m): 2:51pm On Aug 02, 2016
A PAEDO mum has been jailed after making home-made PORN movies of her having sex with her 14-year-old SON.
The incest mother sent the clips of “full intercourse” to a cousin in Pakistan along with indecent photos of her three-year-old daughter.
The mum-of-four’s disgusting crime only came to light when one of her daughters borrowed her son’s phone and found the clips.
The paedo’s eldest daughter said in court: “I worry about my mum”.
Prosecutor Ian Kolvin said the first of the videos showed MouthAction and other sex acts between the mum and son.
Mr Kolvin said: “She was telling him to take the video. It shows full intercourse.
“It showed the son with his naked mother, rubbing her breasts and vaginal area.”
When the police seized her mobile phone they discovered indecent images not only of her son but also of her three-year-old daughter.
Her cousin in Pakistan allegedly asked her to make and send the sickening videos and images.
Mr Kolvin said the woman from St Mellons, Cardiff, told police she agreed to making the videos to please her cousin.
The incest paedo and her children cannot be named for legal reasons.
Her son, in a victim impact statement read to the court, said: “I feel upset and ashamed of what she did. She should not have done it but I miss her very much.”
The mum admitted six counts including sexual activity with a family member, taking and distributing indecent images of a child reflecting 119 images, and three movies.
She has been sent down for five years.
Ruth Smith, defending, had said the mum’s cultural background had made her particularly vulnerable and “highly suggestible”.
She said the mother was forced to leave education at the age of 13 to work in the family business and into an “abusive and violent” arranged marriage
Miss Smith said she had accepted the situation as “her lot in life”.
She said: “She appears to be a person that is very anxious to please and she will change accounts in order to satisfy what somebody is asking of her. She is highly suggestible of others.
“She was subjected to abuse by her husband and that is something she has accepted as her lot in society.”
Miss Smith told Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court that social services had given her a stark choice – to leave her husband or lose her children.
“She has lived her life within her culture as one that is expected of her – a devoted daughter and loving wife.
“She has been subjected to significant abuse. That coupled with her suggestibility may have resulted in a vulnerable individual.
“She was expected to do what she was told and she did not want to create conflict.
“It is clear she is a lady who deeply loves her children despite these offences. She is worried about the future and what will happen to them.”
Recorder of Cardiff Judge Eleri Rees said: “These are truly shocking offences. Your duty was to your children. To that you failed in the gravest possible way.”
The mum will have to sign as a sex offender for life and will be the subject of an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order.

Nairaland / General / Wife Leaves Her Husband After He Chooses To Save His Mother FIRST From Flooding by sharpboyus(m): 12:42pm On Jul 27, 2016
Gao Fengshou rushed to his mother's house when he heard of flooding
The man from Daxian village, China, left his wife and children behind
He later returned home and saw his family had escaped to the rooftop
His angry wife left him the next day together with their children and £230
It's the ultimate decision, one that we all hope we never have to make: save your mother or save your spouse.

A man in China was forced to make the tough decision when floods swept through Daxian village, north-east China's Hebei province, last week, reports the People's Daily Online.

Gao Fengshou rushed to his mother's house first to check on her before returning for his wife and two children aged two and four. His wife was so angry at his decision that she decided to leave him.

According to the report, the event occurred at around 9pm on July 19.

Gao, a professional home decorator, saw on Chinese social media that heavy rain was on its way and would cause severe flooding to the region.

Gao's mother lives alone on the west side of Daxian village while he lives with his wife, father and children on the east side.

Instead of thinking about his wife, whom he had married for five years, the man's first concern was his mother.

He rushed to her house and saw that she was safe and the flooding had not affected her.

He then returned home to spend the rest of the night with her wife, who was panicking about the incoming flooding.

At around 1am on July 20, floodwaters reached his village and were rising quickly, the report said.

Upon seeing this, Gao dashed to his mother's house, leaving his wife, father and children behind.

When he arrived at his mother's house, the flooding had reached waist high.

Worried for her safety, Gao told her to stay in her neighbour's house before quickly driving back to his own home.

When he returned from checking on his mother, he found his family on the rooftop trying to escape from fast-flowing floodwaters.

His wife was unimpressed and has refused to speak to her husband.

The next day, she took her two children along with 2,000 yuan (£230) in cash and left Gao.

According to Chinese media, 25 people in the village died in the floods and 13 are still missing.
People have been discussing the story on China's social media site Weibo.

One user wrote: 'I always thought it was a fairy tale naive question. I did not expect it to be a reality. Brother I feel your pain.'

While another commented: 'To save the mother is right, but I can understand the reaction from his wife. Life is not easy.'

And one user said: 'As a wife and mother, I can understand this man's choice, but I'm sorry I will not forgive. This is my attitude.'

Hebei province is one of the worst affected areas by the flooding and heavy rain.

164 people have been killed and 125 remain missing in the latest flooding which has hit northern China over the past week.

Nairaland / General / Countries Where More Than HALF Of Men And Women Are Unfaithful To Their Spouse by sharpboyus(m): 11:38am On Jul 26, 2016
The YouTube channel Dating Beyond Borders has analyzed surveys to determine which countries have the highest rates of infidelity
According to the video, 62 per cent of Nigerian women have cheated while Thailand is the most unfaithful country in the world
When it comes to infidelity it is widely believes that men are more likely to stray than their female counterparts, but according to a new video, there are numerous countries around the world where women prove to be the more unfaithful sex.
The YouTube channel Dating Beyond Borders has analyzed surveys done by Durex, Match.com and TheRichest.com to determine which countries have the highest rates of infidelity among men and women.
And out of the 36 countries surveyed by Durex, it was revealed that a whopping 62 per cent of Nigerian women were reported to have cheated, making them thought to be the most unfaithful wives in the world.
Meanwhile, Thai women were a close runner-up with 59 per cent of them admitting to straying. However, it has also been reported that Thailand as a whole is the most adulterous country in the world with 54 per cent of men saying that they also have cheated.
Although there isn’t a direct connection between the sex trade and adultery, Patpong in Bangkok, Thailand, is one of the most famous red light district in the world.
Some men in the country are also known to take ‘mia noi’ which translates to ‘minor wife’ in English. However, unlike the mistresses in other parts of the world, these woman are offer considered to be second wives.
Heading west, Colombia is considered the most unfaithful country in Latin America, and according to the video, 66 per cent of men have admitted to cheating on their partners at least once. However, 40 per cent of Colombian women insist they have never been unfaithful.
When it comes to fidelity, Dating Beyond Borders reports that Uruguayan men are the most faithful at 47 per cent while Argentinian women are even more loyal at 55 per cent.
However, cheating is a practice that is considered morally wrong in much of the Western world, so it’s hard to pinpoint the exact percentage of people who are stepping outside of their marriages.
According to the video, it has been quoted that a quarter of Russians cheat although there aren’t any official statistics that have been released.
Dating Beyond Borders reports that Russian women see ‘infidelity as something unavoidable and prefer to turn a blind eye to it’ because there are 10 per cent fewer men than women.
The clip also argues that ‘by necessity women in their forties date mostly married men’.
And while the clip states that an estimated 57 per cent of men and 55 per cent of women in the US have confessed to cheating on their spouses, those numbers may be a bit inflated.
According to the Truth About Deception it is estimated that ‘roughly 30 per cent to 60 per cent of all married individuals in the US will engage in infidelity at some point during their marriage’.
Although some public figures have supported the notion that half of Americans are cheating, Clinical research over the past two decades shows that those numbers may be significantly less.
udith Treas, a sociologist at the University of California-Irvine, reported in 2000 that only 11 per cent of adults have cheated on their spouse or cohabitating partner.
Most recently, the US didn’t even crack the top 10 on Durex’s findings of the most adulterous nations, which has Finland the UK in the ninth and tenth positions with each having 36 per cent of its inhabitants admitting to infidelity.
However, the video does point out that 99 per cent of Americans say that they expect ‘sexual exclusivity from their spouses’.
Cheating is a reportedly a term used mostly by North Americans, and unsurprisingly, it ‘hold a negative connotation’.

Family / Re: Do Some Nigerians Now Beg For Money To Get Married? by sharpboyus(m): 7:16am On Jul 15, 2016
10 Reasons You Don’t Have to Get Married

I’m at that age when pretty much every time I get on social media, someone else I know has gotten engaged or married. The ring-finger picture with the “I said yes” caption is a daily occurrence. I’m always happy and excited for the friend who gets to start a new chapter in her life. OK, almost always. This trend started in my early 20s, when the couples getting engaged then still got the “aren’t you a little young for that?” look. As I climb toward my 30s, I notice more than ever that I’m starting to get those questioning looks, but now people are wondering what the holdup is.
Ticktock goes the marriage clock — especially considering that I have been in a committed relationship with my significant other for several years, moved across the country with him, and lived with him for quite some time. I definitely understand that the topic will naturally come up now and then.
Here’s the thing: I think marriage is great. For some people. For me and plenty of others out there, though, it may not be the right way to go, and that’s really OK — despite a more widely held notion (held most of all by my mom) that my life, in fact, is not complete until I tie that knot.
While there are many pros to getting married for some people, the alternative is true for those who decide not to get married. And don’t get me wrong — who knows what will happen down the line? But in the meantime, here are some reasons why choosing not to get married, ever or until later in life, can be a good thing.
1. You Get to Know Yourself and Find Your Personal Happiness
One isn’t the loneliest number! Being unmarried offers you a unique freedom to spend time with yourself and make mistakes and learn from them — without having to worry about how those mistakes may affect your spouse. Putting yourself first may sound selfish, but it really just means that you are eager to grow as an individual, and that’s definitely a good thing. Within a marriage, it’s easy to become dependent on one another for your happiness, but ultimately you have to be the one who decides this for yourself.
2. Your Finances Are Your Own
Some of the biggest stressors on marriage are the financial aspects of it. Combining assets, joint bank accounts, disagreements on where and what to spend money on — all these things are extra weight on any relationship but especially on a married couple.
3. There Are Other Ways to Define Commitment
Who says that marriage is the best way to show someone you love them? Commitment to a person and real love for them can be shown in a million ways — marriage is just one of them. Plus not marrying someone doesn’t mean being alone forever — it just means doing things a little differently!
4. You Can Travel and Be Social
Unmarried couples and single people tend to travel more and engage more socially with new people. That’s not to say married couples don’t — but it’s sometimes easier for unmarried people to have that freedom without as many conflicts when trying to do so.
5. Getting Married Can Complicate Other Relationships
Getting married changes everything. It can mean moving away or spending more time with other married couples, and sometimes it just means that relationships shift and change. While some may strengthen, others are at risk of weakening.
6. You Can Invest in Your Career and Future
Instead of spending money on a wedding, honeymoon, new house, etc., you can be putting those dollars and efforts into building your career and growing in a field you love. Taking marriage off the table can make room for things that otherwise may have taken the backseat to wedding and marriage plans.
7. Marriage Is Sometimes Done For Others, and That Should Never Be the Case!
If you aren’t getting married for yourself, then you shouldn’t be getting married. It’s easy to feel pressured by people around you, but if you don’t want to get married, you simply don’t have to.
8. Divorce Is a Possibility
With any relationship comes the possibility of a breakup, but with marriage comes the possibility of an even more complicated and painful ending — divorce.
9. You Can Still Build and Have a Wonderful Family
The idea of family is almost always tied in with marriage, especially when children come into the picture. But the definition of family is extremely diverse and personal for each family unit. Not being married doesn’t mean that you can’t have a happy and healthy family with or without kids.
10. Since Love Is Different For Everyone, the Same Traditions Don’t Always Apply
Love is personal. It’s specific to a person or relationship, it’s constantly changing, and it’s always unique. If love is so changeable and diverse, then in some cases, confining it to an institution like marriage isn’t what’s best to help it thrive.

Nairaland / General / Reason Why You Should Tape Over Laptop Camera & Microphone Like Mark Zuckerberg by sharpboyus(m): 4:36pm On Jul 08, 2016
Google reveals plans to put ‘eyes in machines’ as digital surveillance fears reach boiling point

Campaigners slam tech giant’s scheme as ‘creepy’ and urge Brits to cover up cameras on smartphones and computers
Google is planning to put “eyes in machines” and boost computers’ ability to automatically recognise people, places or objects.
The tech giant has just revealed plans to purchase a French firm called Moodstocks which builds software capable of working out what’s happening in a photo – a trick called image recognition.
This buyout is likely to conclude within weeks, although it’s not known exactly how much Google paid to buy the company.
“Ever since we started Moodstocks, our dream has been to give eyes to machines by turning cameras into smart sensors able to make sense of their surroundings,” the French firm wrote.
Google said it would use this system to help identity pictures so they can be easily found through a search engine.
But the development is likely to stoke privacy fears, as many people are concerned that allowing computers to “see” like humans will one day enable the construction of a surveillance state in which our every move can be monitored by governments, cops or corporations. The news comes just weeks after it was revealed that Facebook founder, Mark Zuckerberg, tapes over his MacBook camera and microphone.
These fears are now bubbling over into the real world. Earlier this week, a man allegedly threw Molotov cocktails at Google Street View cars parked outside its California
In an affadvit, police officers said the man later told them “he felt Google was watching him and that made him upset”.
Renate Samson, president of the campaign group Big Brother Watch, said people should be aware of the surveillance potential of their computers.
“All connected devices now have a camera and microphone in them, often these can be turned off and on without us knowing,” she told The Sun.
“Making these eyes intelligent will be great for identifying random objects and helping our smart devices to become even smarter, but not so good for keeping your personal life personal.
“Many people will find the ability for a machine to see everything we see creepy. Covering the camera on your phone, computer or connected device with some dark tape may be one of the few things we can do to keep ourselves safe from prying eyes in the future.”
Google said its purchase of Moodstocks would make its services “simpler and more useful”.
Vincent Simonet, head of Google’s French research and development centre, wrote: “We have made great strides in terms of visual recognition: now you can search in Google Pictures such as ‘party’ or ‘beach’ and the application will offer you good pictures without you n ‘ have never needed to categorize them manually.
“But there is still much to do in this area. And it is here that Moodstocks intervenes.”

Nairaland / General / 11 Dallas Officers Shot, 4 Dead In Shooting by sharpboyus(m): 6:32am On Jul 08, 2016
Eleven Dallas law enforcement officers were shot, four fatally, on Thursday by what is believed to be two snipers who opened fire during a demonstration downtown over recent police shootings in Minnesota and Louisiana, the Dallas police chief said.
The snipers fired from an elevated positions on police officers minutes before 9 p.m. CT, according to Dallas Police Chief David Brown. He described the shootings as “ambush style.”
“We believe that these suspects were positioning themselves in a way to triangulate on these officers from two different perches in garages in the downtown area, and planned to injure and kill as many law enforcement officers as they could,” Brown said at a news conference — noting that some were shot in the back.
A police SWAT team was engaged in a shootout with one of the suspects, and the suspect was taken into custody, police said at around 11:30 p.m. local time. Police had distributed a photo of a person of interest, and police said that person has turned himself in.
Brown said police believe the suspects may have threatened to have plant a bomb in the downtown area, and were in contact with the FBI and federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
A “suspicious package” was found near where the suspect arrested was taken into custody, police said. Dallas police said they followed and stopped a car on a highway after an officer saw someone throw a camouflage bag into a Mercedes and speed off, and were questioning two people inside. It wasn’t clear that the car or occupants were involved.
Police initially said three officers were killed, two others were in surgery and three were in critical condition. Dallas police later announced that a fourth officer died. A civilian was also wounded, authorities said.
Around 800 people were at the demonstration, and around 100 police officers were assigned to the event and the surrounding area, Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings said. The shooting occurred after the demonstration ended and as a march was taking place.
“At 8:58, our worst nightmare happened,” Rawlings said. “It is a heartbreaking moment for the city of Dallas, Rawlings said.
A person at the protest said they were “making our second lap” when gunfire erupted.
“We heard shots, we smelled gunpowder, and that’s when everything got really intense and surreal,” the witness told MSNBC. “We just started to run and grab kids,” he said.
Several hundred people had gathered at park and march Thursday in reaction to the police shootings of Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge Tuesday and Philando Castile in a St. Paul suburb.
The demonstration in Dallas was one of several held in cities across the county Thursday, most of them peacefully.
In Saint Paul, Minnesota, a crowd estimated to be more than a thousand stronggathered outside a school where one of those men killed, Philando Castile, worked as a kitchen supervisor.
I
n Baton Rouge, Louisiana mourners gathered in a “second line” parade for Alton Sterling, who was killed by police on Tuesday in an incident that was recorded on video by a bystander. The Department of Justice Civil Rights Division is investigating that shooting.
“It can be any brother or sister out here. This ain’t just started; they’ve been killing us,” Chermicka Brown, a friend of Sterling’s who joined protesters outside the store where he was shot, told NBC affiliate WVLA in Baton Rouge.
Hundreds of people gathered in New York City’s Union Square before groups marched through parts of Manhattan. Police said they made arrests in Times Square, but a number was not immediately available.
“It’s the definition of insanity,” Michael Houston, a 20-year-old student in New York, told The Associated Press. “How can we expect anything to be different when nothing changes?”
Both shootings were recorded on video. “It disrupts and it crumbles all of the progress that’s been made; it’s unfortunate,” Andre T. Mitchell, the founder of a Brooklyn-based group that works toward improving relations between the community and the police, told NBC New York. “It just sets us back.”
“It’s supposed to be innocent until proven guilty. But the way I see it, it’s murder first and ask questions later,” another protester in New York, Lawrence Amsterdam, 35, told the AP.
There were also demonstrations in Washington, D.C., Atlanta and Seattle. Protests were scheduled in Oakland, California, Thursday.
Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton said at a news conference earlier Thursday that he was “appalled” by the shooting death of Castile, and said that had he been white he likely wouldn’t have been shot.
