Politics › Atiku’s Evidence Shows Buhari Academically Qualified To Be President – Tribunal by sharpden(op): 2:59pm On Sep 11, 2019 |
The Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT) has dismissed the application of Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) against President Muhammadu Buhari.
Mr Buhari who, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), defeated Mr Abubakar in the February 23 election is being dragged before the tribunal where it is being alleged that the president was not academically qualified to vie for the office.
Delivering judgement on the application Wednesday, the presiding judge of the tribunal, Justice Mohammed Garba, said the evidence of the opposition candidate and his party presented before the tribunal shows Mr Buhari is eminently qualified to seek election into the office of the President, Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The Presidential Election Tribunal has fixed date to deliver its judgement on the petition challenging the re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari.
Atiku Abubakar, the president candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is challenging the outcome of the February 23 exercise wherein Mr Buhari was declared winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Mr Abubakar, popularly known as Atiku, is also seeking to be declared the winner of the election.
After listening to the parties in the suit which also seeks the disqualification of the president as having not been qualified to run for the office on academic grounds, the tribunal has fixed Wednesday to deliver judgement.
“The judgment of the petition of @atiku and @OfficialPDPNig against @inecnigeria, @MBuhari and @OfficialAPCNg in the February 23, 2019 election comes up tomorrow, Wednesday, 11 September,” Paul Ibe, media aide to the former vice president tweeted Tuesday afternoon. Politics › IPOB Extends Travel Ban To Nigerian Governors Owing Workers’ Salaries by sharpden(op): 9:10am On Sep 08, 2019 |
The Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB) has extended its travel ban to Nigerian state governors owing workers’ salaries.
This is coming after the proscribed group banned political leaders from the South-East region from stepping their foots outside the country. Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the secessionist group gave the order while speaking with Ben TV recently.
The ban came after a former deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, was assaulted by suspected members of the outlawed group in Germany. A serving Senator, Enyinnanya Abaribe and Imo State governor, Emeka Ihedioha, were excluded from the ban.
Extending the group’s campaign for the restoration of the defunct Biafra Republic, Mr Kanu said his group will now go after state governors who have refused to pay workers their wages. “Very soon, any governor who has not paid salaries will not come abroad anymore. If you owe salaries you’re not allowed to go abroad anymore,” the secessionist leader who is fugitive charged with treason said.
“You bank teachers’ salaries, you bank the salaries of pensioners, you cannot come abroad anymore.
“So this is just the beginning. “We’ll not attack them. We’ll just ask them questions. It is called picketing. It’s allowed within the ambit of democratic rules.
“So, if we see you, we’ll ask you what you’ve been doing with teachers’ salaries, nurses’ salaries and why you’ve not been paying people and what are you doing here? “Any governor owing workers once we catch you abroad you’ll tell us what you’ve been doing with the salaries you’re supposed to pay.
“There’s no time on this earth that any process of agitation will be palatable for everyone or easy for everyone to buy into. When Nnamdi Azikiwe was campaigning for Nigeria to be free from colonial rule, he was sent to prison.
“Many people felt he was radical and declined to associate themselves with him. But in the end, he succeeded in freeing Nigeria not knowing that we are jumping from the frying pan to fire. “Awolowo was the same thing. He was a firebrand. Many people didn’t like his approach from the beginning, but on reflection and review of what he did and how he managed to accomplish them, people have come to understand that he meant well for his people.
“So, now that these things are happening, most people would not appreciate it, but I’m sure that in many years to come, historians will look back to what’s happening today,” he added. David Umahi, the chairman of South-East Governors Forum has described the Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB) as a powerless group.
Mr Umahi made the remarks while addressing State House Correspondents at the presidential villa Thursday. The secessionist group had recently written to state governors on what must be done if the forum wants peace to reign between them and the proscribed group.
Clamouring for the restoration of the defunct Biafra Republic, the secessionist group led by Nnamdi Kanu, said its members residing outside the country has been ordered to attack political leaders of the Igbo predominantly area. The order came after Ike Ekweremadu, a former deputy Senate President, was assaulted in Germany, last month, by suspected members of IPOB.
Among its condition for peace are the lifting of the proscription of the group and an apology from the governors, this Mr Umahi has said they will never get. “We have no apology for IPOB because we did not proscribe them,” the chairman of the forum said after meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari.

“Yes, we are the leaders of the people and we had to speak against their activities. “IPOB has no powers to place a travel ban on governors or anyone.
“I will even tell IPOB any time I intend to travel,” he added. The governor spoke on other issues he discussed with Buhari during the meeting, revealing that he thanked the president for the closure of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, for urgent repairs, but demanded that this be done with emergency fund intervention, which would be it faster than relying on budgetary provisions.
He described his discussion with Buhari as useful while he asked his support for the reactivation and the eventual passage of the South East Development Commission bill in the National Assembly. Following series of attacks on Nigerians and their businesses legally residing in South Africa, Nigerians are trending a hashtag to register their displeasure over the reaction of the President Muhammadu Buhari administration.
In response to attack on Nigerians residing in the foreign country, Mr Buhari, is said to have dispatched special envoy to engage authorities of the country on how to find lasting solution to the unabated attacks. Angered by the action of the president, Nigerians are trending #WeNoGetPresident on Twitter, calling for more disciplinary action against South Africa.
A former Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode, a known critic of the present administration, called for an end to the diplomatic ties with the foreign country.
“The only way to make the South Africans appreciate that Nigerians cannot be killed like chickens is not by sending an envoy but by breaking off diplomatic relations and nationalising all SouthAfrican companies in Nigeria. If they do not stop after that then we should declare war,” Mr Fani-Kayode tweeted on Wednesday.

Politics › EXCLUSIVE: This Man Stole From Nigeria. Today, He’s Minister In Buhari’s Cabinet by sharpden(op): 3:22pm On Aug 28, 2019 |
As a top army officer holding command position, he abused public trust and was caught with his hand in the cookie jar. Realising that he had been boxed into a tight corner, with clear evidence of guilt laid bare before him, the officer sang like a canary as he confessed his thievery of public fund.
Sullen and distraught, he begged authorities, offering to forfeit more than two-thirds of his loot hidden in a secret bank account offshore, those familiar with the matter told PREMIUM TIMES.
He did not want to be prosecuted or publicly humiliated over the matter. His traducers empathised with him, accepted his offer, secretly reprimanded him and allowed him the freedom to enjoy the remainder of his loot in peace.
But that man — Bashir Magashi, a retired army major general — who got away with a slap on the wrist after stealing and shipping abroad not less than $550,000 while in service, has now bounced back, emerging one of the country’s most powerful ministers.
Last Wednesday, President Muhammadu Buhari appointed him to take charge of the nation’s defence ministry, a government department with the third-highest budgetary spending for 2019 –N159.13 billion.
Mr Magashi, 74, was a former military governor of Sokoto State (1990–1992) and was appointed the commander of the strategic Brigade of Guards in September 1993 ahead of Sani Abacha’s coup in November of that year.
The officer soon became a prominent and trusted member of Mr Abacha’s inner caucus. Members of that administration’s kitchen cabinet were from time to time arbitrarily allowed access to the nation’s coffers. At times, they were illegally allocated crude oil which they sold for hefty amounts of money. Mr Magashi benefitted generously from that arrangement.
After Mr Abacha died in 1998, the officer was appointed commandant of the Nigerian Defence Academy, a position he held till 1999 when the new Olusegun Obasanjo administration compulsorily retired all military officers who had served for six or more months in government. Mr Magashi was among those affected by the policy.
Uncovering Mr Magashi’s loot
Shortly after coming to power, the Obasanjo administration rolled out an ambitious anti-corruption programme. Apart from setting up anti-corruption agencies, that government also hired Swiss lawyer, Enrico Monfrini, to help it track and repatriate funds stolen and stashed abroad by Mr Abacha and his collaborators.
PREMIUM TIMES investigation shows that one of the accounts uncovered by Mr Monfrini was a nominee (secret) one held for Mr Magashi at the Jessey, UK, branch of Bank PNP Paribus. The account had $550,000 (about N200million -at N362 to a dollar).
Those familiar with the matter said immediately Mr Obasanjo was briefed by the Swiss lawyer, he directed the then National Security Adviser, Abdullahi Mukhtar, to contact Mr Magashi and other past and serving officials who abused their offices and stashed public funds in foreign banks. They must be compelled to surrender their loots, the then president ordered.
On October 26, 2006, the NSA, via memo NSA/A/225/I/C, updated Mr Obasanjo on the cases of Mr Magashi and four others. “The account (held for Mr Magashi) has a total deposit of $550,000 and it remained intact until it was frozen in 2001,” Mr Mukhtar wrote in his memo.
The then NSA said when confronted, Mr Magashi admitted wrongdoing, saying the money was a proceed of illegal crude oil allocation Mr Abacha made to members of the Provisional Ruling Council (PRC) under his government. The officer was not a registered oil trader at the time. And being a public servant, it was illegal for him to directly engage in private businesses.
President Obasanjo then directed that the entire sum be recovered from the retired general, the then NSA said.
However, “General Magashi pleaded for a concession and Mr President left for him $150,000 from the said sum and to remit $400,000 to FGN which he has complied with as evidenced at Annex A, hereby attached,” Mr Mukhtar said.
Mr Magashi was granted that concession, and no charges were brought against him. It remains unclear why that approach was adopted in handling the matter. Both Messrs Mukhtar and Obasanjo could not be reached to comment for this story. Their known mobile telephone lines were reported switched off for most of Tuesday and Wednesday morning.
The minister declined to comment for this report. He did not respond to multiple calls, text messages, WhatsApp messages and emails requesting his comment.
Is Buhari aware?
It remains unclear Wednesday morning if President Muhammadu Buhari was aware of Mr Magashi’s involvement in the looting of Nigeria during the Abacha regime. Spokesperson Garba Shehu did not answer or return multiple calls from one of our reporters. But a presidency official, who asked not to be named because he has no permission to grant media interviews, said, “I can tell you that there is no way the president would have ignored that kind of matter to appoint him if he were made aware.”
If true that the president had no knowledge that Mr Magashi once forfeited looted funds, it means the State Security Service, charged with vetting appointees to top government positions, again failed to do its job well.
The SSS had also failed in 2015 to detect that the NYSC certificate presented by former Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, was fake. Source: https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/349164-exclusive-this-man-stole-from-nigeria-today-hes-minister-in-buharis-cabinet.html

The Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB) has said those threatening them with blood should have a rethink as they do not bow to threats.
The proscribed group stated this in response to the threat of Junaid Mohammed, a former lawmaker, who urged the group to shelve their planned attack on President Muhammadu Buhari or risk paying with their own blood.
Mr Mohammed who stated this in a chat with a national daily, dismissed the recent threat of the secessionist group, seeking the restoration of the defunct Biafra Republic, to disgrace and arrest Mr Buhari who is in Japan on an official visit.
Leader of the proscribed group, Nnamdi Kanu, had earlier described the Nigerian president, who has been re-elected for another term of four years, as an impostor from Sudan.
Mr Kanu had earlier directed his supporters in the foreign country to assault the incumbent Nigerian leader if sighted in Japan. So far, members of his group in that country has expressed ready to heed the directive as they have been going around searching for the president who is said to have arrived in the foreign land.
Mr Mohammed threatening the secessionists whom he said had no capacity to execute their plan, urged them back down from their plan or risk paying with their blood.
Responding, Mr Kanu said his group does not bow to threats and urged the former lawmaker to advise the president whom he calls Jubril to publicly appear in the foreign land.
“Rather than running his mouth like a captured bandit in police custody, Junaid Mohammed should allow Jubril to make a public appearance in Japan, only then will he understand how insanely fanatical we are about Biafra,” the secessionist leader tweeted on Wednesday.
“IPOB is not Ohaneze or PANDEF that bow to threats,” he added.
State governors and political leaders from the South-East region are reported to have shelved plans to travel abroad in a bid to avoid a similar attack meted out to one of them, Ike Ekweremadu, a former deputy Senate President who was recently assaulted in Germany. Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB), has reportedly ordered members of his group to disgrace and arrest President Muhammadu Buhari in Japan. The order is coming a week after Ike Ekweremadu, former deputy Senate President, was assaulted by members of the secessionist group seeking the restoration of the defunct Biafra Republic. Mr Buhari is scheduled to visit Japan on Sunday and participate in the Seventh Tokyo International Conference on African Development, holding in the City of Yokohama from August 28-30, 2019, according to a statement from presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina.
But in a tweet on Saturday the IPOB leader urged members of his group to disgrace and arrest the president and hand him over to Japanese authorities. “A call to action. If you’re from Biafra, Yoruba, Hausa, Middle Belt, living in Japan, it’s our responsibility to ensure that the impostor Jubril-Buhari is disgraced and arrested,” he said.
“Enough is enough! Our destiny is in our hands. #RevolutionIsNow,” he added while accompanying the tweet with an image showing the face of the president in 2016 and 2019.
Mr Kanu handed a similar order to members of his group, urging them to attack political leaders from the South East.
Punch Newspaper is reporting that the order has prevented state governors and leaders from the geo-political zone from embarking on foreign trip over fear of being attacked.
It is unclear as at press time if the president will still embark on the journey as planned. Source: https://todaypoliticsng.com/disgrace-and-arrest-buhari-nnamdi-kanu-orders-diaspora-supporters/ |

Politics › Group Reacts As Police Says Daughter Of Ex-gov’s Aide Not Kidnapped, Went To Boy by sharpden(op): 11:59am On Aug 24, 2019 |
Group reacts as Police says daughter of ex-gov’s aide not kidnapped, went to boyfriend’s houseA daughter of Frank Anioma, an aide to Chimaroke Nnamani, a former governor of the Enugu State, alleged to have been kidnapped by herdsmen, has been found.
National dailies and online news portals which reported the abduction of Kaosisochukwu Anioma, said the victim was kidnapped on her way to the New Haven market in the state capital. Her father, Mr Anioma while raising the alarm on Thursday, said the telephone number of her daughter was ringing without being picked up.
“Her phone was ringing when we called her number but there was no reply. Thereafter it went into busy,” Anioma posted on his Facebook timeline. But on Friday evening, the politician said her kidnapped daughter has been found, refusing to narrate what transpired.
Reacting to the incident, the state police command said Kaosisochukwu was not kidnapped by herdsmen as alleged, but went to visit her boyfriend in Owerri, the Imo State capital. “Kosisochukwu Anioma recently faked to have been kidnapped is now with @policeng_enugu. Reveals that she was not kidnapped but left their house in Enugu to meet with her school boyfriend in owerri,” the Police tweeted Saturday morning.
She must have gone for the visit without informing her parents, thereby leaving them with no option than to blame herdsmen who are alleged to be arrowheads of insecurity nationwide. GROUP REACTS
Reacting to the release of the young lad, the Enugu Youth Coalition (EYC) said the new development has vindicated its earlier position that politicians in the state were out to cause chaos.
“The unravelling of the truth behind the fabricated kidnap of Miss Kosisochukwu Anioma, daughter of an aid to a former governor of the state has justified our position backed by credible intelligence that most of the negative reports emanating from Enugu State are false, malicious, fabricated, planted, mischievous and sponsored by some ungrateful politicians from the state with the aim of inciting the people, the church and the Federal Government against the peace-loving people and the government of Enugu State,” Edwin Obune, who heads the EYC said in a statement made available to reporters on Saturday. “No doubt, the exposed lie is part of the wider conspiracy to discredit the government, demonize the leadership and effect a regime change through unorthodox means in due time and season.
“We also have it on good authority that following the unsuccessful execution of the first phase of their evil plots by instigating violence, exploiting security lapses across the nation and manipulating the media, some of these politicians have returned home to brief their foots soldiers and direct them on how to execute the second phase of the evil plans against the people and government of Enugu State in the weeks and moths ahead. “Some of their new plans includes but not limited to whipping up marginalisation sentiments, domination of government by people from one part of the state, taking pictures of roads leading to private farms in the villages and posting them on the internet as state of bad roads in Enugu State among others.
“We therefore call on Nigerians, the good people of the state, friends, supporters and lovers of Enugu State to remain vigilant to their antics and to always rally round the state government in the ongoing fight against good governance and participatory democracy in the state,” the statement partly read. The leader of the EYC said the state is not only safe, peaceful and secure, but also hospitable and welcoming to tourists and investors who will want to invest their fortunes in the state. Politics › Herdsmen Not Responsible For Killing Of Enugu Pregnant Woman – Group by sharpden(op): 5:32pm On Aug 22, 2019 |
Enugu Youth Coalition (EYC) has denied media reports that herdsmen are responsible for killing a pregnant woman in the state.
The story perused by TODAY POLITICS said the heavy woman was attacked while returning from the farm. Her womb was reportedly opened and her unborn child removed. The attack is coming weeks after religious clerics were murdered in the state by suspected herdsmen.
Denying herdsmen are responsible for the attack is Edwin Obune, who heads the EYC and expressed dismay over the attack attributed to herdsmen. Mr Obune said the crime should not be attributed to herdsmen because authorities were yet to identify the perpetrators of the act.
“I want to condemn whatever circumstances that might have led to the incidence in Nchatancha Nike in Enugu East Local Government Area of the state, but then I take exception in the claim that herdsmen were responsible for the action when the identity of the killer (s) have not been established by any authority in the state,” the leader of the youth group said in a statement he made available to reporters.
“Again, while I condemn the unfortunate incident in it’s entirety, I also condemn the Punch Newspaper reporter for being sensational in his reportage by not conducting proper investigation to ascertain the identity of those behind the crime nor waited for the state Police Command to establish the identity of the killer (s) before publishing it to the reading public.
“I strongly believe, the reporter played to the gallery in his report. What stops him from using words like ‘unknown gunmen’ instead of herdsmen until the identity of the killer or killers are known? “What if the account of the police becomes different, whereas he has already made Nigerians to believe that herdsmen were responsible for the crime?
“Just as the identity of the victim was not known, neither was the identity of the killer(s) known also. “Therefore, rushing to report the story without investigation will make Nigerians to suspect whether the Punch Newspaper correspondent in the state is on the payroll of those who have sworn to demarket the state and make it unpopular to investors.
“More so, a content analysis of all his reports from the state since this year shows that he has biased mind against the Government, the Fulanis and the peace-loving people of Enugu State.
“I’m also aware of the sustained efforts by some failed politicians from the state to use ethnic profiling against the Fulanis in the state to settle political scores and incite the people against the government without minding the collateral damage such an action would cause to the state and it’s people in the future.
“Finally, while I strongly condemn the killing, I urge Nigerians not to believe the report until the identity of the perpetrators of the crime are fully established by relevant authority,” Mr Obune added. ALSO READ: Attack us and be deported back to Nigeria - Southeast govs dare Nnamdi Kanu
