Politics › What Should Be Done For Buhari To Proscribe Herdsmen – Aide by sharpden(op): 3:06pm On Jul 30, 2019
The presidency has revealed what must be done for armed herdsmen to be proscribed by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The pastoralists are alleged to be responsible for the unabated insecurity bedeviling the nation. Several socio-cultural groups in the country are calling for the proscription of the herdsmen given their violent crimes against their host communities.

A recent proscribing of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) resurfaced the call. The Islamic religious body is accused of terrorising Nigerians with their protests wherein they are demanding the release of their leader, Ibrahim El-zakzaky.

Several protests embarked upon by members of the IMN often turn bloody as they often clash with security operatives leaving lives lost on both sides.

The process of proscribing the Islamic group was hatched last week after a meeting between the president and security chiefs.

Weighing in, Lauretta Onochie, the president’s social media assistant advised those seeking the proscription of the pastoralists to approach the judiciary.

“Those who have been calling on Nigeria to declare the Fulani Ethnic group a terrorist tribe, should head to d courts,” Ms Onochie said in a tweet on Saturday.

The president who is from the same Fulani tribe like the herdsmen is accused of nepotism and is said to be spearheading a plot to Fulanise and Islamize the country.

The declaration of IMN members popularly known as Shiites as terrorists is the second since he took office as a democratic president.

His sledge hammer first landed on the Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB) a secessionist group calling for the restoration of the defunct Biafra Republic.

Politics › 7-Year-Old Daniel Olutope Is Ekiti Governor For One Day As Fayemi Steps Aside by sharpden(op): 11:01am On Jul 25, 2019
In a bid to encourage a 7-year-old pupil, Daniel Olutope, to work hard in a bid to actualize his dream of one day becoming the helmsman of Ekiti, the state governor, Kayode Fayemi, handed over power to the young lad to steer the affairs of the state for a day.

It started when the Mr Fayemi visited the school of Olutope and the duo became friends after “an intelligent chat” between the two.

“Government business was put on hold last week when Dr Kayode Fayemi welcomed 7-year-old school boy, Daniel Olutope, to his office in fulfilment of the governor’s invitation to visit when he was in Daniel’s school earlier in May this year,” the government of state said in a statement posted on its social media pages.

“Fate brought the duo together on 7th May when the governor had lunch with pupils of St. Michael’s African Primary School, Ado-Ekiti. Daniel chatted so intelligently that Mr Governor asked if he could be his friend and possibly visit him at home.

“Daniel agreed and promised that his mother will bring him on a visit. However, Mrs Oluwatoyin Olutope Adaramodu, Daniel’s mum did not believe her son when he got home and told his mum that his new friend, Mr Governor, invited him to visit.

“A few months after the meeting, Governor Fayemi instructed his aides to re-visit Daniel’s school and bring him to his office.

“Daniel was accompanied by his mother, Mrs Oluwatoyin Olutope & his teacher, Mrs Dupe Adeosun to the Governor’s office in Ado Ekiti for what turned into an opportunity for young Daniel to briefly act as Governor.

“Do you remember me, the man who lives on top of the hill?” Dr fayemi asked Daniel on arrival to which he responded, “yes”. He then led Daniel to his desk & lifted him into his chair, pulled him to his desk & shook his hand “Your Excellency sir”, Fayemi fondly addressed him.

“Mr Governor asked if Daniel would love to be Governor when he grows up and Daniel agreed. The governor therefore encouraged him to work hard at his studies so his dream can come true.

“Daniel’s mother, Mrs Olutope said the visit was surreal to her & she was elated to see her son sitting in the Governor’s chair, a sign that her child could be governor in future like Dr Kayode Fayemi. She prayed for the governor’s success & thanked him for his kindness to her son.

“Daniel’s teacher, Mrs Adeosun commended the governor for inviting her alongside the boy; stating that such gesture would not only encourage other teachers but also raise hope in pupils that they too could become great in future.

“Dr Fayemi has since been making necessary interventions to ensure that public schools have not only adequate funding, world-class physical structures, and functional teaching equipment, but also the right nutrition programme that supports the education of the young ones,” the statement concluded.

Members of Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) has embarked on yet another protest on streets of Abuja, the nation’s capital.

Politics › Ministerial Screening: Lawan Shields Amaechi From Being Questioned by sharpden(op): 3:57pm On Jul 24, 2019
Ahmad Lawan, President of the 9th Senate, has shielded Rotimi Amaechi, former Transportation Minister, from being questioned while the latter who is a ministerial nominees was being screened.

Ministerial nominees are to be screened and confirmed for them to resume office. If a nominee is a former federal lawmaker, while appearing for screening, the nominee is given the privilege to take a bow and go without being questioned.

When Mr Amaechi appeared for screening at the Senate plenary on Wednesday, Mr Lawan prevented lawmakers at the floor of the red chamber from questioning the former governor of Rivers State on account that he is a former state legislator.

Lawan’s submission did not go down well with Senator Danjuma Goje, who kicked against the decision of the Senate President.

Mr Goje said he wasn’t shown a similar gesture when he was nominated a minister despite being a former state lawmaker.

The Gombe lawmaker also said the decision of the Senate President to shield the former minister from being grilled by his colleagues from Rivers State is not known to the standing rule of the red chamber.

“I agree totally that it is not in our rules but we can regulate ourselves even without things in the rules,” Lawan said in response.

“So, we adopt this because we should extend this privilege to the House of Assembly. I think there is nothing wrong in that. The nominee (Amaechi) is just a beneficiary by chance. We are not doing this for him,” he added.

The former minister later bowed and walked out of the screening floor. TODAY POLITICS recalled that under the 8th Senate led by Bukola Saraki, Amaechi was questioned when he was first nominated a minister in 2015.

Politics › Shehu Sani: What An Ex-Governor Said About State Police While In & Out Of Office by sharpden(op): 11:25am On Jun 18, 2019
What ex-gov Dankwambo said about State Police while in and out of office – Shehu Sani

Shehu Sani, a former federal lawmaker has revealed what a former governor told him on the clamour for the establishment of State Police.

There have been calls by some state governors for the establishment of State Police in order to properly secure the lives and properties in their domain.

While some ethnic socio-cultural groups joined in calling for the formation of the force, others are against it insisting it will be a persecution tool in the hands of state governors who are expected to control it.

At the moment, the Nigeria Police under the control of President Muhammadu Buhari is the only civil force constitutionally mandated to prevent crimes and maintain public order.

Mr Sani who lost his re-election bid to return to the Nigerian Senate said the former governor had clamoured for the establishment of State Police while he held sway but has now kicked against it because he is out of office with fears that his successor will use it against him.

“A Governor from the North East personally told me last year that he wants State Police; Now that he is out of office and hunted by his successor, I called him last night and asked him again he said he has changed his mind,” the lawmaker said in a tweet on Tuesday.

Although no name was mentioned, POLITICS TIMES gathered that he was actually referring to Ibrahim Dankwambo, former governor of Gombe State.

Mr Dankwanbo who left office last month is the only former governor in the Northeast region that is being prosecuted by his successor.

The Gombe State Recovery Committee had last week summoned the former governor to appear before it and account for properties allegedly disposed off illegally by his administration.

Although, Bala Mohammed, the new governor of Bauchi, another state in the Northeast, vowed to probe his predecessor, Mohammed Abubakar, he is yet to do so as at press time.

Politics › Oshiomhole, Gbajabiamila Set To Clash Over Head Of House Committees by sharpden(op): 9:02am On Jun 18, 2019
Femi Gbajabiamila, the new Speaker of the House of Representatives is set for clash with Adams Oshiomhole, the national chairman of the All Progressive Congress (APC).

The looming conflict is fueled by the lawmaker’s resolve to carry opposition party members in the lower legislative chamber along by appointing them heads of house committees against the wish of the APC chieftain.

Mr Oshiomhole, a former governor of Edo State, in April, said his party will not cede any position to members of the opposition particularly those from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He said the entire formation of the lawmaking arm is going to be winner takes all given the fact that the APC is in the majority.

“We cannot as a party which has a comfortable majority, entrust critical committees in the hands of the PDP or opposition,” Mr Oshiomhole said when joined lawmakers-elect of the party to dine with President Muhammadu Buhari who hosted a dinner for them.

“If Nigerians wanted them, they could have voted them. In the days of PDP, every committee were chaired by PDP members,” he added.

But opposing him is Mr Gbajabiamila who vowed to carry his colleagues at the chamber along despite their political differences.

“Committees will be unfolded in the next few weeks and you will see how we intend to carry the opposition along; I am not letting anything out of the bag but you can be sure that they will be carried along,” the Speaker told State House Correspondents after meeting with Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo at the latter’s office on Monday.

“You heard my inaugural speech; we are going to be doing things differently; we are going to build on whatever the achievements of the 8th Assembly are.

“It is going to be a reformed house; the reforms are going to be dished out piecemeal so as not to shut the system.

“But there will be reforms that will be for the benefit of the country. We see how it goes,’’ he added.

Mr Oshiomhole is yet to react to the new position of the legislator but he is likely going to kick against the move.

Politics › Peter Obi: Why Buhari Is Yet To Form His Cabinet Weeks After Swearing-in by sharpden(op): 2:44pm On Jun 17, 2019
Peter Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, has criticised President Muhammadu Buhari for failing to form his cabinet weeks after been sworn-in for a second term.

Mr Buhari, who was re-elected for a second term in office took the oath of office on May 29. He is yet to make any appointment since he began his second and final term as a democratic president.

When he was sworn-in for his first term in 2015, the president wasted approximately six months without ministers to help him pilot the affairs of the nation. His delay in forming his cabinet at the time is said to be responsible for the economic recession the financial management of the country went into the following year.

Political appointees of the president who worked with him during his first term are still discharging their duties which has forced a legal practitioner to seek redress in court if those whose tenure expired with that of the president could continue in office without being reappointed.

Opining why the Nigerian leader has not constituted his cabinet, the running mate of Atiku Abubakar, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in this year’s presidential election, said the delay is because the president is not serious leader.

While citing elected leaders in other countries; Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa and Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India, who formed their cabinet within weeks of being sworn-in, the former governor urged Mr Buhari to emulate them.

“These are serious leaders who are ready to move their countries forward. Imagine forming their cabinets within one week of being sworn in,” Mr Obi said while addressing in journalists in Lagos State at the weekend.

“Can you compare them with what is happening here in our country? I have always said it that for our country to move forward, it must change its current compass,” he said.

He said the problem of the country range from leadership failures to excessive borrowing with “nothing to show for all the borrowed funds.”

“What we have today in Nigeria is the cumulative effect of leadership failures. A leader must know his/her destination. Painfully, we have plenty bad role models masquerading as leaders.

“Nigeria is in total mess because of too much borrowing caused by leadership failures. Our situation will get worse if we do not solve these problems urgently. There is serious crisis in Nigeria because politics is now business and transactions. In fact, we have reduced our lives to transactions in Nigeria.

“Tell me, what is working in Nigeria today? A country where states owe billions and the federal government has borrowed over N11 trillion since coming into office and there is nothing to show for all the borrowed funds. Are you not worried that over 21 million of our youths are not employed?

“Nigeria is gradually collapsing and unemployment is part of the disease killing Nigeria. All hands must be on deck to help save our nation from these leadership failures,” he added.

Ahmad Lawan, President of the 9th Senate, has denied endorsing the South-West for 2023 presidency.

There were reports at the weekend that the top lawmaker endorsed power shift to the Yoruba predominantly region.

Some party chieftains in the All Progressive Congress (APC) are of the opinion that the North must retain power beyond 2023 when the second term of President Muhammadu Buhari winds down.

While some of the members of the ruling party has kicked against the plot to retain power in the North, some individuals considered influential in the geo-political zone are backing the plot.

Politics › What Buhari Should Stop Doing To Nigerian Universities – Shehu Sani by sharpden(op): 9:47pm On Jun 16, 2019
Shehu Sani, a former lawmaker from Kaduna State has advised President Muhammadu Buhari on what he needs to stop doing about Nigerian universities.

Mr Buhari had last week lambasted tertiary institutions in the country for their slow pace in making discoveries and inventions.

“It is not heart-warming that in our over 58 years of independence, Nigerian universities are slow in discoveries and inventions,” the president said on Saturday while delivering key note address at the fourth convocation of the Federal University, Dutsinma (FUDMA) Katsina State.

“Research, critical thinking, moral dispositions, discoveries, and inventions should find natural habitats in our universities, as they do in several other universities in the world.

“Universities are supposed to be strong drivers of the country’s development initiatives for sustainable development,” the Nigerian leader represented by Hafiz Abubakar, former Deputy Governor of Kano State.

The president also pledged to look into the infrastructural decays of the institutions, promising to release N208 billion for the projects, a far cry from the over N1trillion demanded by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

But reacting, the Kaduna lawmaker urged the president to stop condemning the tertiary institutions in the country because they are poorly funded.

“It’s unfair for the political elites to underfund the universities and ferry their children to the best and expensive schools in other countries and turnaround to scold and condemn the Nigerian University system.Softly Baba,” Mr Sani said in a tweet Sunday evening.

Top politicians in the country largely do not send their children to study in Nigerian universities often because of poor funding and industrial actions by school authorities which will inturn extend the number of years students are expected to spend in school.

Buhari is one of such political elites whose children studied abroad despite their father claiming to be poor when he sought the exalted office during the 2015 presidential election.
