Abrantie: So I was at a hospital's waiting room recently and this dude walked in and sat by me. He was like "what am I supposed to do with all these coins" while showing me the change he received after paying his consultation fee. My initial reaction was a slight confusion as I wasn't sure what he meant or what the big deal was with a few Pesewa coins.

He continued, "I'm not used to this. Where do I put them?".

I replied, "Uhm.. put them in your suit pockets. You do have pockets, don't you? (he was wearing a suit in 32C friggin humid Accra degrees). I continued "Every country uses coins".

He looked at me condescendingly and so I asked him "where are you from?" because I detected "Naija" written all over his ugly face.

"Am frum Nigeeeria and we don't use coins".

So I said, "Oh, of course, yes that's true. You people still count in thousands and millions just to buy common commodities. Secondly you'd find it difficult to carry the loot if your nation had coins in its currency, wouldn't you?

Before he could counter with a remark, his name was announced and he had to go see the doctor.

I was actually peeved at this guy's attitude. I mean, here he was in a foreign country, as an economic and insecurity refugee, but was frustrated at using that country's currency to pay for goods and services? What nerve! What arrogance! What did he expect?... to get his change in Naira instead of Cedi?
