The Catholic Bishop of Nsukka Diocese, Rt. Rev. Professor Godfrey Onah, at the weekend, condemned the attitude of politicians and public office holders who are not concerned about the plight of youths and the generality of the masses. Speaking during the funeral mass for Lolo Josephine Oyima Abba, mother of the Enugu State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Engr. Vita Abba at Ede-Oballa, in Nsukka Council Area of Enugu State, Onah warned that such neglect could force the youths to revolt against the leaders. He therefore cautioned political leaders to retrace their steps, as it would not be possible to quench the indignation of Nigerian youths who may soon run out of patience with the leaders over the poor treatment they are getting from government. The bishop cautioned that it would be difficult to stop the youths if they were further pushed into frustration. He threw posers to both the government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, on the reasons behind the over three-month-old industrial action that has paralyzed academic activities. The bishop said from his interactions with Nigerians, the inability of both parties to end the lingering strike was unjustifiable and inexcusable. He said, “I know that I have enough persons here and also hopefully enough instruments to carry this message to the ears of the highest echelons of power in this country. “The common people, the students and their parents, whom I represent, do not believe the explanations the politicians and the academics are giving for the strike; we don’t believe them and we are appealing to them in God’s name to remember we will all end this way (pointing to the dead); let them end this strike immediately. “I want to ask a question; it is a question not a statement. I am asking the leadership of the government in this country- is it really true that you don’t have enough money to improve upon the quality of education in this country or is it that you are stocking up money in preparation for 2015 in order to buy your way to power or to secure your future indefinitely through corruption?” [Vanguard] ASUU Strike: Youths May Be Forced To Revolt – Rt. If given approval by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the 2015 general elections will take place either in January or February of that year. Chairman, INEC, Prof Attahiru Jega, dropped this hint at a two-day international workshop on “Ethics and Elections: Challenges and Institutional Responses” organised by the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung Foundation in Abuja. Jega also canvassed direct line charge of funding for State Independent Electoral Commissions (SIECs) to make them independent. Explaining why the 2015 elections might hold early in that year, Jega said the 2011 general elections would have been held earlier to allow for litigations to be resolved before the inauguration date of May 29 but for the voters registration exercise which preceded it. He lamented that pre-election cases which dealt with disagreements arising from nominations and primaries had to drag on for years into the tenures of some candidates. He expressed hope that the judiciary would henceforth not deal with such cases routinely but adopt a business-like approach. He said: “The key challenge is when these cases go on forever; they are not given priority. Three years after, we’re still dealing with pre- election cases.” Canvassing for Direct Line of Charge funding of SIECs, Jega noted this would ensure independence for the state electoral commissions. He argued that “if their funding can be guaranteed like INEC’s, it can go a long way.” On independent candidacy, the INEC chairman said it was a position which had been canvassed and which he supported but insisted that given the number of political parties, there was the need to set regulations, thresholds and benchmarks. “We’ve many political parties as it is,” he observed. 2015 Elections May Hold In January – Prof Attahiru Jega |
45years old Mrs. Oluwatoyin Alabi had barely settled in her new position as the Ondo State Liaison Officer in Lagos when she died on a strange official assignment that is still causing controversy. Mrs Oluwatoyin was promoted on September 13, 2013. A state assignment that required her to accompany the corpse of former Ondo State governor, Olusegun Agagu, to Akure from Lagos, for a state burial, marked the beginning of the journey that led to her death. Her husband, Taiwo Alabi, 50, said her last journey, which was to see her deliver Agagu’s corpse to Akure in Ondo State, was shrouded in mystery till the last minute. Below her the revelations: According to Mr Taiwo Alabi: “The State governor told my wife on October 1, 2013 that she would be the one to accompany the corpse from Lagos to Ondo. When she told me that evening, I asked ‘why you, since you’re not a commissioner’, but she said that was what she was told. “I asked what type of flight they would be taking, she said nobody had told her yet. On October 2, she got a call from the Commissioner for Special Duties that they should meet at the morgue to dress Agagu’s body and make arrangements for police escort. “On October 3, 2013, she left home around 5am and called me some minutes before 8am that they were at the airport. I asked what airline they would be flying, she said that up till that moment, she still had not been told which airline it would be. But 25 minutes later, she called to tell me that it was Associated Airline and that they were waiting because the weather condition in Ondo was said to be unfavourable. “The name of the airline didn’t ring a bell because I had never heard of the airline before, so I told her to be careful and find out more. Then later, she called to inform me that the weather was fine now and that they were leaving. She said ‘ take care and good bye’, but I didn’t know that those would be her last words to me.” Alabi told Punch that there was news that his wife and other passengers were supposed to fly another plane belonging to another airline before a last-minute change. “We heard that they had booked for another airline but changed to Associated Airline in the last minute.” Alabi said he too had left home that morning for Ibadan in Oyo State, and heard about the crash on his way. He said, “Thank God I had one of my brothers with me because he was the one who took the steering wheel from me. The news shocked me. I thought ‘where do I start from?’” Alabi and Oluwatoyin had been together for 24 years, ten years of courtship and 14 years of marriage. Their only daughter, who is 11 years old, is in Junior Secondary School Two. Alabi said telling their daughter about Oluwatoyin’s death was one of the toughest things he had had to do in his life. He said, “When we managed to tell my daughter, with the support of some other people about her mother, she fainted and we had to revive her. She was very close to her mother. But surprisingly, she has been strong since then. She’s the one that is even encouraging me now.”Meanwhile, Alabi said no one has contacted him since the death of his wife. “There has been no single call from the airline since the crash. Even the Nigerian Airspace Management Authority or any of the agencies has also not bothered to call the family. I think it’s very bad.” SOURCE |
