Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Honourable Usman Bayero Nafada, on Wednesday, expressed the preparedness of the National Assembly to create more states in Nigeria, just as he hinted that Nigerians should expect not less than eight more states to be created. Nafada, made this known during a press conference he addressed on constitution amendment, as he recounted personal efforts and the seriousness of the two chambers of the National Assembly, to create additional states in Nigeria. He disclosed that the mood of legislators across board was that each of the two divides, in Nigeria, the North and South, should get four states each, while according to him some members were even advocating that five state should be created each in the north and the south. Nafada stressed the importance of creation of additional states, which according to him was meant to spread development to the grassroots in the country, just as he stated that more states, if created would generate employment opportunities for Nigerians. The deputy speaker lauded the efforts by the Senate and the House on conclusion of Constitution amendment assignments, which according to him, was a land mark in the history of parliamentary democracy in the country. He explained reasons behind the resolve of the House to drop the clause on disqualification of candidates on the basis of indictment by white papers or reports of administrative panels, stating that the mood of members in that regard was that a candidate could only be disqualified by a competent court of law, rather than by white papers. He stressed that the suspicion by members against the idea of white papers as a means of disqualifying candidates from elections, was the reason, majority of them voted against it, while considering the Constitution Amendment Bill. Some of the members, he explained were of the view that the issue of white paper as a tool for disqualifying candidates from contesting elective offices could be a subject of abuse by either the President or state governors, whom he noted could set up an administrative panel of enquiry and subsequently issue a white paper, by their whims and caprices. On why the members voted against the proposal on gender balance in the appointment of headship of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the deputy speaker said members were of the view that the issue of election was more serious that it should not be subjected to gender sentiments. http://www.tribune.com.ng/index.php/news/4699-nass-may-approve-8-additional-states-deputy-speaker-says-new-constitution-ll-be-ready-before-2011-elections http://www.vanguardngr.com/2010/04/29/reps-okay-10-new-states/ |
Atiku thanks AC as he finally quits * By Yusuf Alli * Published Today * News * Rating: ratingfullratingfullratingfullratingfullratingempty Unrated Abubakar Atiku FORMER Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has finally resigned his membership of the Action Congress. But he admitted that his experience in AC has enriched his life. In a letter addressed to the Chairman of the AC in Yeli Ward in Kojoli-Jada Local Government Area, the ex-Vice President said he had to quit because he had always been a player in the nation’s mainstream politics. It could not be immediately ascertained why the letter, dated April 6, 2010 , was unveiled yesterday. The letter reads: "I wish to convey to you my decision to formally resign my membership of Action Congress (AC) with immediate effect. I have, however, taken this inevitable decision with mixed feelings. "As circumstances and realities change, so do people re-assess such realities within the context of their own convictions. "No doubt I owe a debt of gratitude to the leaders of AC for inviting me to be their presidential candidate in the 2007 presidential election, after I reluctantly left my party following my unjust expulsion. "The circumstances of my exit from PDP are so well known to Nigerians. The values and ideals of the party were deliberately trampled upon by anti-democratic forces. " Despite being a founding member, I was treated shabbily and eventually forced out of the party. I had no choice therefore but to team up with others to found the AC, the platform I used to contest the 2007 election. "Throughout my political career, I have always been associated with mainstream national politics. Sadly, my efforts to help build a strong national opposition party have been frustrated by factionalisation, intrigues and divided loyalties to particular individuals. These factors have made opposition parties incapable of rising to the challenges of national leadership. "While appreciating the brotherhood and solidarity extended to me by AC, the current realities of Nigerian politics are not lost on me. "Opposition parties need to enjoy broader national appeal and present superior democratic credentials such as internal democracy and tolerance of dissent. " The fissiparous nature of opposition parties and their inability to achieve broad-based national structures make it impossible for them to assert themselves effectively, let alone win power at the centre. "Even after my reluctant exit from the PDP, the bond of brotherhood and goodwill between me and other founding leaders of the party remained intact," Abubakar added. http://thenationonlineng.net/web2/articles/43344/1/Atiku-thanks-AC-as-he-finally-quits/Page1.html

yes u r right and having gone thru d applicants I believe siasia has what it takes to beat them both in playing experience coaching and exposure. |
Written by - Wednesday, 14 April 2010 05:10 Z ambia have announced that Nigerian coach, Samson Siasia, has applied to coach the country’s team following the departure of Frenchman Herve Renard. Zambia Football Association (ZFA) secretary-general, George Kasengele, told the Zambia Daily Mail that the one-time Nigeria Olympic team coach was among a score of foreign candidates aiming to replace Renard, who has signed up with 2010 Nations Cup hosts Angola. Other coaches who have applied include Eddie Hudanski, who is in charge of the Congo-Brazzaville national team; Marcos Gusmao of Brazil, who coached Papua New Guinea, and Mamoud Guindez, who captained the Algeria national team at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico. Former Ghana trainer Milan Zivadinovic, Sasa Nikolic from Croatia, Mario Marinic of United Kingdom, Milos Hristic, Predrag Juka (both from Croatia) and Amir Alajic of Bosnia have pushed in their applications. Other coaches who have sent their credentials are Thomas Borann of Germany and John Felix Kaputa of Malawi. Kasengele named Gareth Lloyd of England, Zavia Milosavjevic, who has coached Rwanda Patriotic Army (APR) and the Lesotho national team previously, and Goran Kopunoviac both of Serbia as the other coaches that have shown interest in the job. Kasengele said most of the coaches were sending their details through agents. “We have not yet advertised for the job but coaches have already started sending their application forms. In fact we expect more to come,” Kasengele said. However, Siasia told MTNFootball.com that he is not aware of the Zambia job. “I’m not aware of the Zambia job. I have an agent who has been working on Liberia and Kenya jobs, but I’m not even aware that Zambia are shopping for a coach,” Siasia said yesterday. Siasia has been one of Nigeria’s most successful coaches on the international scene in the last five years. He guided the country’s team to the final of the 2005 FIFA Under-20 World Cup in the Netherlands and three years ago, his team reached the final of the Olympic football event in Beijing, China. http://www.news.dailytrust.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=1727 |

If we all agree that this is a form of dictation from America then I think that we should heed this advice. As much as I resent American interference in the internal democracy of any country I think what they are trying to say is that Iwu is not accepted that much we all know.Various groups have called for his sack but the Govt.is keeping mum,so if America wants him out Pls I think we should be grateful that they are in this for us.Something we have all overlooked is who will replace Iwu.For me out of all the names that are being touted as replacement I will prefer Olisa Agbakogba.Inthe end I truly pray that we have someone who will be able to do the right things and forget the politicians. |
OK now that he has come out of his shell,if it's for real let's see what all those spineless so-call big men in PDP will do.I am praying that his coming out now will throw the party into confusion against themselves for the good of the country. |
God can, and he will surely stop him for the masses of this country |
It saddens me to even hear this man's name anytime and now upon all the insults he is been mentioned to rule us for another 8 years.Haba Nigerians don't we know shame?Like someone asked-How much rape can Nigeria/Nigerians take? |
For anyone who watched the first game between this two earlier in the season If u have to speak the truth U will surely concede that Madrid played much better than Barcelona the home team.in attack, shots at goal, ball possession Madrid was surely better and that was a team that was in formation then compared with a Barcelona team that has been stable for like 3-4 seasons now.Though Barcelona had an edge in the scoreline which was even controversial judging frm Zlatan's position. Now coming to play in the Bernabeu today we are surely going to witness either a very interesting game or a dull one in which both teams will trey to keep cool. But whatever REAL MADRID will win.A team that has so much firepower ,though I agree that their midfield is not as solid but pls keep ur fingers crossed . madrid all d way |
This is quite hard to predict especially the scoreline and judging from the way both teams have been playing I foresee a victory for the Whites. |
Forty-four days after President Umaru Yar‘Adua was brought back to the country in the cover of darkness, indication has emerged that the ailing president would be flown abroad again for further medical treatment. Yar‘Adua was hurriedly evacuated to Saudi Arabia on November 23 last year and was admitted to the King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre in Jeddah. A few days later, his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Olusegun Adeniyi, issued a statement signed by the president‘s personal physician, Dr. Salisu Banye, saying that Yar‘Adua was suffering from ”acute pericarditis”, a covering of the heart membrane that impedes blood circulation. Just like he was secretly flown out, Yar‘Adua was flown back to Abuja in an air ambulance in the wee hours of February 24, two weeks after the House of Representatives and the Senate had passed resolutions on February 9 empowering the Vice President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, to assume office as Acting President. The National Assembly took the step because continued absence of the President was threatening to plunge the nation into serious constitutional crisis, particularly because he was held incommunicado by his wife, personal aides and kitchen cabinet. But Saturday Punch investigation revealed on Friday that Acting President Jonathan, who had since replaced the National Security Adviser, dissolved the Executive Council of the Federation, reconstituted it and sacked the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, was ready to approve that Yar‘Adua be flown abroad again for further treatment. A Presidency source said that Jonathan had also given the nod to the Yar‘Adua family to fly him to any country recommended by his doctors for comprehensive medical treatment whenever the need arose. The source said that Jonathan was willing to approve all necessary logistics for the President‘s medical trip abroad. “It will then be left for the President’s doctors and his family to decide whether they want to return him to Saudi Arabia or find another country where he will be able to receive the necessary medical attention,” the source said. It was revealed that Jonathan‘s gesture to his boss was contrary to speculations that the new cabinet he inaugurated at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa on Tuesday will soon invoke Section 144 of the Constitution to activate the process of removing the ailing president from office on the grounds of permanent incapacitation. It was further gathered that Jonathan‘s gesture was also meant to reassure the Yar‘Adua family who had adopted panicky measures in the last two weeks by inviting some Islamic and Christian clerics to visit and pray for the ailing president in his residence, a departure from their initial policy of making access to him impossible since November 23, 2009. The source told one of our correspondents that Jonathan would not move against Yar‘Adua because ”his motive for dissolving and reconstituting the cabinet was to deliver good governance to Nigerians.” The source added, ”You know the antecedents of Jonathan right from his days as Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, Governor and his selection as running mate to Yar‘Adua in the 2007 election. ”The man is not desperate and he still sees Yar‘Adua as his boss and would be willing to hand over to the President whenever he recovers from his illness. ”The Acting President will not invoke Section 144 against Yar‘Adua. That is not the reason for dissolving and reconstituting the Federal Executive Council. ”In fact, he has approved that Yar‘Adua be taken outside the country for medical treatment and that he was willing to handover to him whenever he recovers.” The Acting President was quoted as saying that he was not desperate for political power as only the Almighty God has the ability to determine who will be entrusted with positions of authority and power. The Senior Special Assistant to the Acting President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Ima Niboro, could not be reached to react to the revelation that Jonathan had approved further foreign medical trip for Yar‘Adua. Calls placed to his telephone lines rang out unpicked while an SMS message saying, ”Hello sir, my office needs to confirm a report that the Acting President has approved a plan to fly the President to a foreign hospital. Thank you,” sent to him by one of our correspondents, was not replied. http://www.punchng.com/Articl.aspx?theartic=Art201004101582182 |
With the little I know about Utomi I know he is not a tribalist,So I can safely say this is not a political party representing a few geographical political zones. As for the mega party, there has been conflicting reports in the news as to the leadership, who will in or out.I can't say if this is what we have been waiting for. marvix:but I agree with u when you say we should try and belong to a party, truth is yes we can this happens to be a forum with alot of progressives |
For me I think I like this guy, truth is formation of a political party may not necessarily be for him to contest but to provide a platform where like minds can come together to actualize their dreams. One can only hope that these aspirations are for good. |
By Ayo Okulaja April 9, 2010 01:53AM print email Nigerians should not allow the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), run the country aground, the Protem National Chairman of the mega party, the Social Democratic Movement Party (SDMP), Pat Utomi, said yesterday in Lagos. Mr. Utomi, who spoke during a chat with journalists, outlined the policies and priorities of the new party and its desire to rescue Nigeria from the brinks of collapse under the PDP. “There is a consensus that our country is in very serious trouble, and that at the heart of the trouble is a fundamental-cultural challenge with the PDP, which has been the dominant political party in Nigeria for the last decade,” he said. The former presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the 2007 elections, said if the PDP continues to run the affairs of the country, the nation is bound for failure. “There is a conviction amongst people who are giving to thinking that if the PDP runs Nigeria for the next four years, there will not be a Nigeria,” he said, saying it was for this reason that some people of goodwill, integrity and competence have come together to decide that “it is time to work together to create a political party that can pull Nigeria away from the brink and show it a new light.” Mr. Utomi said a two-year long meeting around the Mega Summit Movement has led to the creation of a new party, the Social Democratic Movement Party (SDMP), which he claims will be an entrepreneurial party focused on market economy and backed by the goodwill of all the people. He traced the beginning of the party’s initiative to elder statesman, Anthony Enahoro, who consulted with leaders around the country on the need to save the country with the formation of a broadbased political party, with a spirit opposed to that of the PDP, which he described as “dominant, narcissistic, self-loving, and self-serving.” Mr. Utomi said himself and Sule Amman, the co-chairs of some of the mergers that led to the movement, agreed with other leaders in the early days of the party’s formation that the fundamental values and goals of the party would force people that are not so well-aligned to its goals to depart the party. Education and Health as priority The party, he said, would be one of discipline, service, integrity and with very clear ideas of how to solve identified Nigeria’s problems. He listed education and health as the main priority of the party. Other priorities will be power supply, stimulating economic activities through job creation, fighting corruption, and electoral reform. Ahead of the 2011 elections, Mr. Utomi called for the quick commencement of electoral reforms, saying, “if we do not start now, there might not be election in 2011.” The SDMP application would be officially submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) office on the 19th of April. “We will give INEC 30 to 31 days after which, if we do not hear from them, we will take it that we have being registered and kick off our programmes, because that is what the law says,” he said. http://234next.com/csp/cms/sites/Next/News/Metro/Politics/5552313-146/utomi_announces_formation_of_social_democratic.csp |
