Politics › Senator Marries 13 Yr Old Girl by sheriffman(op): 12:08pm On Mar 27, 2010
Written by By Emmanuel Bello, ABUJA
Friday, 26 March 2010 22:41

Former Zamfara State governor, Ahmed Sani, Yeriman Bakura, has married a thirteen-year-old Egyptian girl. LEADERSHIP WEEKEND learnt that the marriage took place at the national mosque, Abuja, two weekends ago. The former governor, now a senator, paid a bride price of $100,000, the equivalent of roughly N15m. He also divorced one of his wives to facilitate the marriage. In Islam a man is only permitted to have four wives. Yeriman, who popularised the Shariah code of Islam in Nigeria, could not have the wedding in Egypt; the Egyptian authorities would not put up with such a marriage as their laws forbid that sort of union. Yariman Bakura is well into his 60s and the laws in Egypt consider his bride a minor.

The former helmsman of Zamfara State, however, in a deft move relocated the venue of the event to Nigeria, where he believes “anything goes”, said a source. The marriage was held in Abuja. The bride moved 30 members of her family over to Abuja where they were lodged in PROTEA Hotel in Asokoro.

An Islamic cleric who spoke to LEADERSHIP WEEKEND said that the whole thing goes counter-cause to Islam. He said that though there were no limits to how much can be paid as bride price, Islam still preaches moderation. According to him, the former governor flouted this caveat. Besides, said the cleric, Yeriman being a public office holder, should not have made such an ostentatious show of wealth.

Those who attended the wedding in Abuja include Sen. Kabiru Gaya, Maina Maaji Lawal, deputy governor of Zamfara State, Mukhtar Hanka, and the Emir of Bakura.

Nigerian youths to march on National Assembly tomorrow

Written by Saharareporters, New York Monday, 15 March 2010 16:11

Banky W, Omotola and Eldee
A youth rally, under the name ENOUGH-IS-ENOUGH Nigeria, will take place in Abuja tomorrow in response to recent developments in the country. “ENOUGH-IS-ENOUGH [is] a coalition of individuals, organisations, and collectives, intended to be the most ambitious of youth initiatives aiming to effect peaceful transformation in Nigeria,” said Tolu Ogunlesi, winner of the CNN Journalist of the Year awards last year. “ENOUGHISENOUGH is a double-edged sword; it is a message both to us (that it is time to leave the comfort of our computer and mobile phone keyboards, and seek to exert authority in the real world) and to the powers-that-be (that enough is enough of taking Nigeria and Nigerians for granted).”

The rally will have young professionals, celebrities, activists, students and others. The protesters will gather at the Eagle Square at 11am and march to the National Assembly, accompanied by a massive pool of national, international and youth media.

One of the prominent youth leading this is the Nollywood star, Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, whose youth empowerment project, OYEP, is also a part of this protest. “We've had cases of people who die as a result of generator fumes,” Jalade-Ekeinde said. “We cannot continue to sit on the fence and allow just a few people in government eat up our future.”

According to another member of the coalition, Toyosi Akerele, team leader of Rise Networks, which held nationwide seminars with almost 50, 000 youths last year: “Silence is not golden, we have to speak up! Our children will live in worse situations than we are in now if we don't do something. It is a crisis of values for me to take up a job I cannot handle, despite that, the rallies we are doing are not an anti-Yar'Adua campaign but an anti system campaign.”

“Look at what is happening in Jos, it is a failure of leadership – and we are angry,” said Chude Jideonwo, who is Creative Director of the popular The Future Awards/The Future Project. “The drama surrounding President Umaru Yar’Adua’s health has effectively derailed the country.

But Nigeria is bigger than one man! The president should either resume, resign or be removed from office before the end of this month. And if he resigns, all those involved in these unconstitutionalities should be brought to book! Then there’s the issue of power supply, and then there is the issue of fuel. It is just shameful. Enough is enough.”

Organisations involved in this include the Rise Networks, the Paradigm Initiative Nigeria, Abira Foundation, Gbagyichild Entertainment, Chocolate City , The Future Project, The Movement for Islamic Culture and Awareness, amongst others. “There is no north or south demarcation here,” Alkassim Abdulkadir, until recently with the National Assembly, said. “Young people across Nigeria are one in their anger, and Muslim or Christian, South South or North Central, rich or poor, we are all marching in Abuja in one accord to take a stand, and let our voices be heard.”

The organisers mentioned that the rally is only the first in a chain of actions leading up until the 2011 elections.

According to them, they will be working vigorously to actively participate in the polls as well as to pile on pressure for electoral reform. Already, older Nigerians including Prof. Pat Utomi, Hon. Abike Dabiri, Chief Dele Momodu and others have indicated their support for the rally and will be joining the protesters. Young celebrities involved in this include MI Abaga, Timi Dakolo, the Rooftop MCs, Eldee the don, Banky W, Omoni Oboli, Matse Uwatse, Denrele Edun, Segun Obe, amongst others.

“This is the important first step,” said Nze Sylva Ifedigbo, Abuja-based coordinator. “Young people need to make a statement that we are an important voice in this country. More than 70 percent of the population is below 35, and we have had enough of this rubbish. Many young people now realized that it is not enough to be angry on Facebook and Twitter and on the internet; it is time to walk the talk. So all the young people who are tired of everything that is wrong in our country are going to show that we are not taking it anymore!”

The ENOUGHISENOUGH group is also a strong part of the Save Nigeria Group’s efforts, and is especially in charge of its pop culture arm. Key members of the group, represented by Ohimai Godwin Amaize, a Microsoft Internet Safety Ambassador, are part of the organisers of the SNG protests.

“Most of us have only ever seen guns in the hands of armed robbers and armed policemen,” Ogunlesi reiterated. “Our weapon is anger, enlivened by a sense of history, and of destiny, and tempered by reason. And, very importantly, we are determined not to make the mistakes that those who went before us made, revolutionaries who ended up creating systems in dire need of revolution.”

Other members of the coalition and signatories for this can be found on the website: www.enoughisenoughnigeria.com.

.Coalition Issues 24-Hour Ultimatum to Non- indigenes
From Mohammed Aminu in Sokoto, 03.15.2010

As the Court of Appeal sitting in Sokoto fixed tomorrow for judgment in the case between the Democratic Peoples Party (DPP) governorship candidate, Alhaji Maigari Dingyadi, and Sokoto State Governor, Alhaji Aliyu Wamakko, a group, Sokoto State Youth Coalition, has issued an ultimatum to non-indigenes and other religious groups to vacate the state within the next 24 hours for their safety, saying the condition will be disastrous if justice did not prevail.

It also raised alarm over alleged plan by some unscrupulous individuals to influence the decision of the judiciary by all means and cautioned the judiciary to tow the path of truth and fairness, warning that the situation in Sokoto needs proper handling and mistakes should be avoided.

Addressing journalists in Sokoto at the weekend, its Chairman, Comrade Abubakar Salame, said due to the peaceful and harmonious relationship existing between the indigenes and non indigenes, it had become imperative for non-indigenes to vacate the state for their safety, if justice is denied.

He maintained that people were ready to defend their franchise through the most acceptable process in modern times and threatened to make the state ungovernable, if justice is denied. Salame stated that the association was aware of attempt by some unpatriotic individuals to tamper with the decision of the judiciary by all means, stressing that such acts will only lead to anarchy in the state.

“We are aware that certain individuals are exploiting all possible avenues to tamper with the decision. This we assure the nation will only lead to a massacre of the highest order, as our people are not going to fold their arms to see their rights trampled upon”. He alleged that the group is aware that certain individuals are being sponsored by certain countries to create chaos and instability in the state and will not fold its arms and allow such thing to occur.

Plateau State Police Command has said the Fulanis who invaded Dogon Nahawa village on Sunday and massacred hundreds of persons including women and children were paid to do so.
Acting Commissioner of Police of the state command, Ikechukwu Aduba told journalists yesterday that while some were paid by persons yet to be identified, others volunteered to join in the slaughter.

According to him, so far they are yet to reveal their chief sponsors but had confessed they were on revenge mission.
He said 200 suspects have so far been arrested. 49 Fulanis were arrested immediately after the incident and in their statements owned up to carrying out the invasion and killings in Dogo Nahawa, Zot, Rasat and Kutgot, the police boss said.
The second category made up of some 151 persons, he said, were arrested at Mangu and other surrounding villages for unlawful possession of prohibited firearms and unlawful assembly. According to him, the men took the laws into their hands by taking up arms in apparent defence of their communities against any possible attack.

Speaking on the number of deaths, the acting commissioner revealed that after thorough investigation, it was discovered that 109 people were killed by the Fulanis during the raids on the three villages.
He said those buried in the mass grave were 12 male children, 26 female children, 16 female adults and 16 male adults, while those privately buried by their respective relations at Barkin Ladi were 18 .
The acting police commissioner said those privately buried by relations at Dogo Nahawa village were 12 and those who died while receiving treatment at the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH), nine.
Aduba emphasized that the figure was authentic, stressing that “even though the sudden and natural death of a single Nigerian citizen is enough to mourn, there was the need to put the record straight.”
He described as fabrication the figure of 500 and 371 variously credited to the state commissioner for information.”
He told the people of the state to co-operate with the police by giving peace a chance particularly at a time the youth corps members are on national assignment.
When contacted on the disparity of figures of those killed, the state commissioner for information said he stood by his words that about 500 people were killed.

Truly we all know the PDP is a sick party with alot of people who have no good plans for the country.
But for me I think there is an angle to all of this which we have all overlooked.
Knowing how much Nigerians love power
What will happen in 2015 if and when a PDP incumbent President from the North still has an interest in the presidency considering that the constitution allows him to go for a second term? (Remember Anambra).
And even Vincent should have known that the controversy he is stirring now is premature.
Will the PDP then be bold and foolish enough to favor that incumbent then or not?
What happens to Goodluck after 2011 elections will he still retain his position as a VP or be pushed aside?

Politics › What Happens If Goodluck Becomes The President? by sheriffman(op): 4:04pm On Feb 01, 2010
Going by what I have been reading, hearing and observing,I think it's safe to say that soon and very soon indeed Goodluck Jonathan will be sworn in as the president either in an acting capacity or whatever.

My premise is based on the fact that Yaradua's health is not improving as we have been made to believe by the FEC in the last few weeks, also attempts by some of his very close cohorts to bring him home soon may not yield any positive result as the Saudi Doctors are said to be against it,and even if he comes back he may not be in a right frame of mind psychologically and health-wise to continue in that capacity as the president.Going by these it's now news that some Northern elites and political leaders have dumped Yaradua and are now shopping for a suitable VP for Goodluck who will in turn be a presentable candidate in the 2011 elections so that the north can continue and say complete it's term of 8 years.

Now my question is this: What happens if all these comes to pass?
1: Does that mean that the North will then rule us for a new 6 years tenure in addition to what Yaradua has spent?

2: What if Goodluck performs and does a good job with his little time there? Will the PDP tell him to move aside so a northerner can replace him?

3: What will be the stand of the South-South and the remaining Southerners?

It was a big shock to me when I heard the news, and just last week on the news I did hear that the presidential panel was still sitting and now this one With the state panel having concluding their sitting and submitting their report and the presidential panel preparing to finish sitting this one has now broken out again. I will want to believe that some selfish people are doing this to cover up for something that is likely to come out either in the submitted report or the one that is about to be concluded.
I have stayed in the North all my life and have seen my fair share of these crisis and fellow Nairalanders it's not something to see.
If the news of the  demand by the Americans that all Almajiris schools should be closed is true then I truly believe this is a good time to follow up on it.Take a look at the Boko Haram crisis that rocked about 7 states here they were products of such schools and though some of the parents were ignorant of the kind of training their wards were receiving in such schools, some were fully aware and I can say it's a greater part that are aware of the brainwashing,anti-west,and anti-christian doctrines their kids are fed with.

But the big question is who has the guts/political will to stop this teachings and such crisis in the North because only then will all Nigerians start believing that we are all One,That will create a kin of new beginni9ng for us somehow and we all can live where we choose to,invest and truly be safe within our own country.

I have been in this relationship with this my friend for like 5 years now and we were planning to even settle down sometime in November of this year,I am scheduled to go see her parents officially in April,But therein lies my problem my parents (paternal Side)(my Dad and his siblings)have all said NO to the union for various reasons which are in a way related. Some of which are spiritual and I have been told by them that it may not last forever infact that we will start having problems after two kids.(My paternal side are spiritually inclined)
The true love between both of us is mutual and I have informed her of my parent(s) decision but it doesn't seem to shake her.

My dilemma now is how can I make her see reason for us to part ways?

Yes Ibra has done better when considering both of them, but from my point here I think financially Eto had a better deal, and better contract terms when compared to Ibra.Do you know that Eto demanded two days off to be included in his contract per week i.e. after a weekend game he is not expected back on the pitch until after two days from every game. And it was granted.
One on one I believe Eto is better than Ibra,he weas nearing the end of his contract with Barca, just 1 more season left.If Barca had not sold him he would have been a free agent hence the rush by Barca. Also note that the deal was dependent on whether Inter could meet all Eto's demands for the Barca switch.
