CHELSEA tonight confirmed Kepa's £71.6million world-record signing from Athletic Bilbao - after selling Thibaut Courtois to Real Madrid.

Kepa's fee is the highest ever for a keeper - beating the £67m Liverpool paid Roma for Brazil's Alisson just last month.

Kepa, 23, told Chelsea's website: "It’s a very important decision for me, for my career, and also for my personal life.

'So many things attracted me to the club, all the titles the club has won, the other players, the city, the English Premier League.

"It’s an accumulation of things, and I am very glad Chelsea has decided to trust me and to take me in as well."

Kepa had a medical earlier today after the Blues paved the way for his arrival 24 hours earlier by paying Bilbao his release clause.


Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia said: "Kepa is a talent we have admired for a long time and we are extremely excited about his arrival.

"He has already demonstrated fantastic quality and consistency and will be a big part of any success Chelsea have in the coming years.

"His long-term contract reflects the belief we have in him and we look ahead to the coming seasons with an enormous sense of optimism.’

Chelsea have confirmed the sale of Thibaut Courtois to Real Madrid, with Mateo Kovacic coming to Stamford Bridge as part of the deal.

Courtois has been at the west London club since 2011, and wrested the No. 1 jersey from club favourite Petr Cech after shining during a loan spell with Atletico Madrid as a youngster.

In recent months, however, the Belgian has become increasingly unsettled, going so far as to skip training, while he has long been linked with a return to the Spanish capital where he spent three sparkling seasons.

And he will now line up at the Champions League holders after Madrid agreed a reported €35m (£31m/$40m) fee that will also see Kovacic spend a year on loan in London.

"Chelsea and Real Madrid have tonight agreed terms for the permanent transfer of Thibaut Courtois subject to the agreement of personal terms and passing a medical," Chelsea signalled in a statement published on the club's official website.

"Subject to the completion of the deal Mateo Kovacic will join the Blues on a season-long loan."

Meanwhile, Chelsea are expected to sign Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga as Courtois' replacement at Stamford Bridge.

Bilbao announced on Wednesday that Kepa's £71m buyout clause had been activated and his contract terminated - although there was no mention of Chelsea in the club's official statement.

Such a fee would make the Spain international the most expensive goalkeeper in history, surpassing the £67m fee Liverpool paid to sign Alisson earlier this summer.

Morata has decided to change from the number 9 he wore last season to celebrate and pay tribute to his family after his wife Alice gave birth to twins Alessandro and Leonardo on Sunday - 29 July.

‘It is a day I will never forget, to welcome my twin sons into the world. My family is so important to me and I want to honour them and my wife, Alice, when I am on the pitch which is why I have decided to take a different number for the new season and remember this special day by adding the number 2 to my shirt.

‘I am sorry to the fans who may have bought a number 9 with my name already, but I hope you understand my tribute and that it will not be a problem and we can make you a new one with the 29. Thank you for your support and I hope this year there will be lots more to celebrate.’
