After battling a long time illness, Nigerian music legend and reggae king Majekodunmi Fasheke, popularly called Majek Fashek, is dead. Some of his musical works include Prisoner of Conscience that featured multiple award-winning tracks Send Down The Rain (1988), Little Patience, Spirit of Love, I & I Experience, So long too long, Rainmaker, Weep Not Children and Rasta Ganstar. Here are few things to know about Majek the Rainmaker: 1. Majek Fashek various translations of his name Fasheke (Ifa-Kii-she-eke) include “high priest who does not lie”, “powers of miracles” and “(system or medium of) divination does not lie”. 2. After Majek’s parents separated, Fashek remained in Benin City with his mother and joined the choir in his local Aladura Church and learned to play the trumpet and guitar whilst composing songs for the choir. 3. Davolee is a Nigerian character with a word proficiency. His mind is filled with tales and his tongue breathes fires of resonant reality. He was birthed and bred in the embers of Nigerian underprivileged underground and it reflects in his music and vocal texture. ‘Festival Bar’ might have a cult following, but it also represents the truth that eludes most Nigerians. During this chat, Davolee was so grudgingly compliant while displaying a fleeting nonchalance as his voice portrayed a distant defiance. In his resolution to this world, it’s obvious that Davolee had seen the worst. Having lost both of his parents before he turned five, Davolee has lived with over 20 families across several neighborhoods in Lagos, Nigeria. The uncertainty of his background means he finds it hard to make long-term plans. He enjoys producing music ‘on the fly.’ Growing up in uncertain circumstances will rob you of your chance to dream. Any appropriate setting can be taken from you at any time. “Even my album, I don’t have plans for it yet. When I’m ready, I’m ready (laughs). I’m just grateful that my team has grown to understand me.” Davolee says. With labels, Davolee says Olamide once told him, “You can’t be under anybody… You are a complex character.” While Davolee didn’t understand it at the time, he gets it now. His independence is more steadfast and his life is more complex. His peers in the Nigerian music industry have faded away or succeeded. But he is still trying to find a way towards consistency. Instead of looking at what he doesn’t have, he’s looking to attain heights. But in all of it, there are dark and light tales. • DEPRESSION, SMOKING AND DARK THOUGHTS In his life, Davolee had to be left alone by his older siblings. As the last child of the family, he had abandonment issues that made him resolute, defensive, self-sufficient and determined to make it with wild individualism. But as success has taken time to find him, Davolee has fallen into depression. Some of these issues were highlighted on Festival Bar III and IV. Davolee rapped about himself in the body of Segun, the kid who needed to win, but struggled to win. Responses from fans were also so sparse that hype from a club gave him inspiration. “I’m going through a lot, bro. I just can’t say them to you – the only way I can express these things is through my music which is my medium to lighten my load. Talking about my trials could make me a motivational speaker (laughs), but I don’t want to be rhyming stupid words (laughs),” Davolee says. When I then asked him if he had mental health issues, Davolee says that he recently realized that he had some and he’s in the process of finding a way to manage them. Davolee Delivers A Short Film Of Picture-esque Storytelling On ‘Festival Bar’ [EP Review] Festival Bar EP houses the first two installments and two new ones on which Davolee continues his empathetic story towards desired success. Earlier today, we had a conversation with Davolee. The honesty his installments of ‘Festival Bar’ conveys is his true life. His heart is forever on his sleeves and his depths of pain can be felt in his voice. His life is the textbook representation of life of an underground artist in inner-city Lagos. Between the moment Davolee dropped the first ‘Festival Bar’ installment in 2017 and now, he has grown to be revered as one of the best storytellers in Nigerian Hip-Hop. The franchise has also grown to have its own cult following from Nigerians across demographics because of its intrigue, imagery and detail. Another factor for the attention it gets is about the resonance of the story. Nigeria is a society where life in the struggle is the reality for most people, after all. But while everyone has seen struggle, most people have not seen struggle like Davolee. Festival Bar EP houses the first two installments and two new installments on which Davolee continues his empathetic story towards desired success. While his tone was slightly energetic on Festival Bar I and got needy on Festival Bar II, the tone on the latest two installments suggest a lack of vim and vigour. When you listen to Festival Bar III and IV, you will understand that some of that loss of energy is warranted. Hence, this is a short film of Davolee‘s true story (as Segun) in four acts. ∆ PART I Festival Bar can be describe as, “The 2017 lo-fi, drum-heavy, bass-rich trap beat laced with a the story of inner-city lifestyle and majorly, the topic of deceit and greed. “Festival Bar is a local pub where Davolee‘s character named Segun used to work as a bar man. The bar is owned by a White man married to a Nigerian woman named Mama G. “In front of the bar is a shop owned by Mama G. In addition to his bar responsibilities, Segun (Davolee’s character in the song), also goes to Mama G’s shop that is managed by a sales girl named Salewa, a deceitful person. “Salewa hikes prices on everything, and reject Segun’s counsel to stop doing such. She sees the money she makes from her deceit as a way to maintain herself. It all comes to a head when Salewa sold Don Simon a regular customer for NGN1,000 – it ordinarily sells for NGN600. “She was new, so she didn’t realize who she sold to was a regular customer who then protested so much that Mama G had to intervene. In the end, she chastises Salewa, but ends up blaming Segun for teaching an already corrupt Salewa bad habits of deceit. The song ends with Segun rejecting such claims of deceit as an ‘igboro boy.'” ∆ PART II Festival Bar 2 sees, “A newly jobless Segun go back to the hood with his life was headed nowhere, and with limited life prospects. Fearing for his future, his family members tried to help him find his path shut his football dreams down. “With little money to fund an education, and an unwillingness to go into a life of crime, Segun took to working with with constructions company. When he realized that hustle was not going to fund his big dreams, he left it. “His parents started criticizing his life choices. Frustration became anger as he couldn’t find employment. So, Segun started lashing out, fighting and breaking bottles in the streets. About seven months later, Segun got a job at Aqua Dana where he was earning N17,500. “The money was insufficient to fund his feeding, transportation and music career so he started doing a little ‘Dine and dash’ at Iya Nafi’s place – he also introduced his friends to the madness. A little later, he quit Aqua Dana after having issues with his tyrannical boss, Mr. Tony. “Instead of apologizing, he left defiantly due to his ego. He then became a motor boy before he got sick. All this while, he was dropping freestyles on his Instragram page, but didn’t realize Olamide Badoo was watching. “This version ends with Davolee promising to tell the story of his short affiliation with YBNL Nation on the next ‘Festival Bar.’ Segun is still dreaming… Big” Continue Reading Here; https://mynewspage.com.ng/2020/05/29/davolee-delivers-a-short-film-of-picture-esque-storytelling-on-festival-bar-ep-review/

Some parents in Lagos State have kicked against reopening of schools in view of the continued spread of the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19). The parents who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in separate interviews agree that it was important for the federal and state governments to continue to safeguard children from the pandemic. NAN reported that the Federal Government on Wednesday said that it was considering reopening of schools based on morning and afternoon shifts method. The Minister of State for Education, Emeka Nwajiuba, made the disclosure in Abuja during a briefing by the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19. A civil servant, Mrs Ayobami Ojo, who resides in Ikotun, urged the government to allow children to remain at home until containment of the pandemic. “There is no need of considering any morning and evening classes for now; let the children continue to stay safe at home as the virus is increasing everyday. “Children will naturally not be as cautious as adults; schools cannot be compared to markets. “Reopening of schools should be considered when confirmed cases drop very well,” Ojo said. Also, a businesswoman, Mrs Abiodun Aina, living at Ayobo, said that children’s lives could be jeopardised by hasty school resumption. “It is difficult to control adults, let alone children, we should not risk the lives of children. “A two-shift option for classes may not stop the spread of the virus. “It is better for them to remain at home until COVID -19 subsides or vaccination is found. “Nigerians should stop putting pressure on government to reopen schools. Why are we in a rush? We need to be patient,” Aina said. A businessman, Mr Kayode Jacob, who resides at Iyana-Ipaja, said that governments should not consider reopening primary schools at the moment. What’s The Craziest Thing Love Has Ever Made You Do? 10 Nigerians Share Their Drunk-In-Love Stories Love itself may not be crazy, but it surely makes you people crazy stuff. That’s why you’re happily doing with that your partner, what you swore to your friends to never do in a relationship. Of course no one is judging here. We perfectly understand that those are some of the things that happen when love is on the brain. That’s the explanation for why this Japanese princess chose to be with her fiancee, even though it would cost her her place in the Japanese monarchy. And it is exactly what once gave birth to the #NeverAgainBro hashtag on Twitter, where babes and guys are reminiscing on some of the hurt they suffered for being ‘too in love.’ Even long before Twitter, men and women have been doing crazy things because they were in love. Just ask Adam, for example. Or ask everyone who took part in the war that ensued when Prince Paris fell in love with Helen who was betrothed to King Melanaus of Sparta and stole her back to Troy. So, as it has been since the days of old, it remains till this day. Adam and Prince Paris may be long gone, but love is still making people do outrageous things, and here are some of them, provided by young Nigerians. 1. Scammed My Parents “I scammed my parents for money in Uni and bought my boyfriend a 43K wrist watch. “I actually do not regret it.” – Adeola. 2. Elope “I and my boyfriend had an agreement that if any of our parents say no to us getting married, we will elope, get married and have a child before returning. “He’s a Muslim, I’m a Christian. “Thank God the relationship broke up before it got to that.” – Shalewa. 3. Help My Crush Get Her Crush “I was a poet back in High School. I’ll write poems for my crush to give her crush.” – @iamtopmaestro on Twitter. 4. Emmanuella Samuel was just five years old and on a family holiday when she partook in a comedy skit that would shoot her to stardom and win her four international awards. In the skit titled, “My Real Face,” she deformed her face to avoid the wrath of the headmistress and her daughter. Her catchphrase “This Is Not My Real Face Oh” quickly became a household slang and a source of fascination for the kid whose actions and words defied her age. Emmanuella’s daring yet hilarious actions evoked laughter and curiosity as to who the little girl was. The acting and topnotch comedy, interestingly, became her “real face”. With over 6 million views and the skit’s feature on American broadcast station, CNN’s Facebook page, the world’s stage was set for Emmanuella. As the saying goes, nothing good comes easy. Emmanuella was met with some resistance from her uncle, Mark Angel, at first. Mark Angel who ran a comedy skit had called for children to audition but quickly found that they couldn’t remember their lines, giving her room to shine. Reminiscing about the moment, the youngster says: “Uncle Mark is my uncle. I went to his house to spend my holiday. Uncle Mark was shooting, so I walked up to him and told him I want to act. He told me to go away, that I am disturbing them. The next day, he called me and asked me if I wanted to act again and I said ‘yes.’ That was how he started putting me in comedy.” When she grabbed the opportunity, little did the then-5-year-old know that it would be a life-changing one for her. When asked about how she copes with her new status as a celebrity, her first response was “I am okay with it”. A little more prodding and Emmanuella revealed that she actually learnt to fit into the big shoe. President Muhammadu Buhari has urged Muslims to keep their spirits up in spite of the coronavirus pandemic, “which caught the world off guard, and has put a damper on what would otherwise have been a time of celebration for the Muslim faithful to mark the end of the Ramadan fasting period.” In his Sallah message to Muslims on the occasion of Eid-el-Fitr, the President noted that “for the first time in recent years, the COVID-19 pandemic has taken a heavy toll on the people’s spiritual, social and economic lives.” He said: “This year’s fasting period was particularly challenging for Muslims because they had to forgo many important aspects of their daily worship, including the routine congregations for prayer and the recitation and interpretation of the Holy Qur’an as well as travelling for the lesser pilgrimage to Makkah.” President Buhari in a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, said, “it is not easy to give up many of these important duties and activities, but it became imperative to do so in order to control or limit the spread of this deadly disease. “Let me use this opportunity to commend the sacrifices of both Muslims and Christians for their cooperation in the enforcement of the social distancing guidelines. “I am well aware of the inconveniences these tough measures have brought on the lives of Nigerians, including limiting religious activities and gatherings in large numbers,” the President noted, adding that “No government would intentionally impose these tough and demanding measures on its citizens if it had a choice.” The President appealed to other Nigerians “whose businesses and means of livelihoods were badly affected by the prolonged lockdown measures for their understanding and cooperation.” Buhari assured Nigerians that the lockdown measures would not go on longer than necessary because they would be reviewed from time to time to ease the increasing hardships on the people. He also exhorted people with means to continue helping their neighbours and the less well-to-do “so that we can all come out of this pandemic stronger and more united.” Source:- https://mynewspage.com.ng/2020/05/23/eid-el-fitr-keep-your-spirits-up-in-spite-of-covid-19-buhari-tells-muslims/

Nigerians have expressed doubt in the number of coronavirus cases in the country Nigerians who accused the government of not being transparent with the novel coronavirus pandemic have taken to Twitter with #EndCovidScamNow to protest the handling of the virus in the country. The federal government through the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control have continued to release figures of people they claim have been infected with the coronavirus without showing their faces. Nigerians who are not happy how the virus is being handled differently from what is obtainable in other places have accused the government of foul play. Also, some patients who were said to have tested positive have also accused the government of failing to show them their test results, for which an index case from Benue state declared positive by the government has threatened to go to court after staying in an isolation centre for more than 30 days without showing any symptoms of the virus. Nigerians on Twitter are now doubting if the numbers by NCDC are made up by the government in order to continue to get contributions which they claim end up being siphoned by unscrupulous elements in government. AFP looks at the five things we learned from one of oddest weekends in the game’s history. • A VISION OF THE FUTURE? The Bundesliga has a head start of at least a month on the other major leagues aiming to restart this summer, and some of strange scenes seen in Germany will become the new normal should football return to England, Italy and Spain. La Liga and Serie A are aiming for mid-June as a potential start date for their suspended seasons, and fans in both countries may have to get used to silent, empty stadiums, socially-distanced goal celebrations, footballers in face masks and the spectre of players catching COVID-19. Italy’s clubs for example are debating a medical protocol that currently rules that if a player tests positive for the virus he and anyone who has come into close contact with him must be quarantined for two weeks, in contrast to Germany where only the player is isolated. How Bundesliga teams fare under their hygiene regulations could provide the model for the coming months. • BAYERN SHOW NO RING-RUSTINESS Heading into his team’s tough trip to giant-killers Union Berlin, Bayern Munich coach Hansi Flick wondered whether his team would be able to last a full 90 minutes after only being given the go-ahead to resume full team training last week. However a dominant display in the German capital, against a team that had already beaten two different league leaders at home this season, showed why they are the strongly-tipped to win their eighth straight league title. Bayern had two thirds of possession at the Alten Foesterei stadium, and once Robert Lewandowski slotted home his 26th league goal of the season from the penalty spot five minutes before the break, the result was never in doubt as the champions went on to claim a 2-0 win. •HAALAND TALKS ON THE PITCH In the aftermath of Dortmund’s 4-0 thumping of Ruhr rivals Schalke, teen striking sensation Erling Braut Haaland was a young man of few words with the awaiting media desperate for something from the 19-year-old goal machine. However, according to AFP subsidiary SID, Haaland mumbled a total of eight English words to reporters, including “Why not?” and “Yes”. It didn’t really matter, as Haaland had done his talking on the pitch, picking up where he left off before the world went into virus lockdown. The Norwegian, who turns 20 this summer, swept home the opener, the league’s first goal of its restart, before laying on the first of Raphael Guerreiro’s brace, showing once again that he is Europe’s player to watch. He has 41 goals this season in all competitions and 13 for Dortmund in just 12 games since joining in January from Red Bull Salzburg. • ALL EYES ON GERMANY Specialist website DWDL.de reported on Sunday that over six million people in Germany watched the first top-tier matches in two months, with 3.68 million tuning into broadcaster Sky Germany’s subscription channels on Saturday. A further 2.45 million tuned into the ‘Konferenz’ — a simultaneous live broadcast of the five afternoon games — on free-to-air Sports News Channel. Sky Germany had a market share of 27.4 percent on their pay-to-view channels and 18.2 percent on their free channel. The German Football League (DFL) told AFP that matches were televised by more than 70 broadcasters worldwide, all on previously-agreed deals. British newspaper the Daily Mail reports that UK viewers were left frustrated as the BT Sport application showing the matches buckled under the weight of demand from fans. • FANS PROTEST ‘GHOST GAMES’ Germany has one of the world’s most vibrant football fan cultures, with raucous fans packing stadiums where entrance fees are priced at a fraction of what Premier League fans have to shell out. And while millions tuned in to watch some live football, a significant portion of match-going supporters are livid at the idea of games going ahead without the noisy backdrop provided by German fans. On Saturday Augsburg fans left a banner inside their team’s ground which read “Football gives life — your business is sick”. St Pauli, meanwhile, on Sunday published a picture on Twitter of a banner that read: “Football lives through its fans! Without you, it’s all nothing!” Source;- https://mynewspage.com.ng/2020/05/17/five-things-from-the-bundesliga-comeback/ |
Buhari Receives Madagascar’s Coronavirus ‘Cure’, Says It’ll Be Verified Before Use Source;- https://mynewspage.com.ng/2020/05/16/buhari-receives-madagascars-coronavirus-cure-says-itll-be-verified-before-use/ Five days after President Muhammadu Buhari accepted Madagascar’s coronavirus ‘cure’, the drug has arrived in Nigeria. While receiving the portion of the drug in Abuja from Guinea Bissau President, Umaro Sissoco Embalo on Saturday, May 16, 2020, President Buhari said the drug must be verified before use. Presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu quoted the president as saying the drug will go through the same verification process other remedies for the disease are being subjected to. “We have our institutions, systems and processes in the country. Any such formulations should be sent to them for verification. I will not put it to use without the endorsement of our institutions,” he said. Madagascar’s President Andry Rajoelina launched the herbal tea, named COVID-Organics, last month, claiming that it has cured coronavirus patients. The herbal tea produced by the Malagasy Institute of Applied Research (IMRA), was created from the Artemisia plant which has been used in malaria drugs. Over 50 coronavirus patients in Madagascar are reported to have recovered after being treated with the remedy.

Wurld Spoke About Writing ‘Blow My Mind’ For Davido, Being Nigerian And New EP, ‘Afro Soul’ [Interview] For most Nigerians, their earliest knowledge or memory of Wurld is the Shizzi-produced ‘Show You Off’ in 2016. Two years later in 2018, he released an EP titled, Love Is Contagious. That was his first Afro-focused project ever. At the time, he was an electro-soul, Hip-Hop, Soul and Alternative act who now belongs to Afro-soul. While Wurld has always been close to his Nigerian roots and he speaks fluent pidgin and Yoruba, he laid down markers for his music in Atlanta, Georgia, US and worked with acts like B.o.B, Mario and more. ‘Follow You,’ his song with DJ Groome was certified gold in Poland. In fact, it was on B.O.B‘s song, ‘I Know’ that this writer first knew Wurld. In the short time that he’s been back, he’s released another critically-acclaimed collaborative EP titled, I Like Girls With Trobul with Sarz, garnered a very niche but loyal fan base and continues to make waves with his increasingly popular stage presence and all-round ability. Arise O’ Compatriots and Love Songs When Wurld came to Nigeria, it took a while to settle in. But by the time he held a listening party for Love Is Contagious at Landmark Event Centre, it was certain that he had people’s attention. Before Wurld met Shizzi and made ‘Show You Off’, he was making music for his debut album. Speaking on coming back to Nigeria, Wurld says, “‘Show You Off’ brought me back to Nigeria, bro. I was in the Hip-Hop world. I felt I had a calling… The love was too much from ‘Show You Off.’ People were sharing it, sending me hundreds of messages everyday. “I was working with B.o.B‘s label No Genre at the time. I created about 15 songs with B.o.B and ‘I Know’ is just one of them. I met B.o.B through Scotty ATL and I was doing hooks for No Genre. I also had about three songs with Scotty and Trinidad James. I made ‘Show You Off’ in 2016 and it was my first time making anything Afrobeats. At the time, I was working on my album that’s still not been released (laughs).” Wurld couldn’t tell me the title of the album he was working on prior to ‘Show You Off,’ but I found out that a significant part of it could be part of his upcoming album. Nigeria’s Call Obey In Trobul When Wurld got to Nigeria, he was working hard on a number of projects and getting media love. Love Is Contagious spurned other amazing songs like ‘Wishes and Butterflies,’ ‘Contagious’ and more. However, Wurld felt underwhelmed and frustrated by Love Is Contagious. He says, “It fell under… The marketing fell under as well. The feasibility also fell under and a lot of people doubted me – even people I was working with. They didn’t just believe in me anymore – I was down for a time and I responded with ‘I Like Girls Wit Trobul.'” Before that EP with Sarz, Wurld found a pocket. He wrote and had recorded two songs with his collaborator, Shizzi. He was in the process of finding a feature for one of them when a Nigerian superstar came along and got those songs for his album. That artist was Davido and the songs became ‘Blow My Mind‘ featuring Chris Brown and ‘Sweet In The Middle.’ Wurld narrates, “I created ‘Blow My Mind’ in 2017. I sent the song to Mr. Eazi and Wande Coal to do a second verse. Runtown also had a verse. In 2019, Shizzi then told me that Davido wanted the record. I was promoting Love Is Contagious at the time and after we went back and forth a bit, we agreed. I mean, he had Chris Brown on it (laughs).” Somewhere in the middle of this, he met Sarz and they started making music together on the day they met. That led to the well-received EP, I Like Girls With Trobul. It documents trouble in love. Coronavirus: Foreign Affairs Minister Explains Why Returning Nigerians Have To Pay The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, has said the Federal Government has no resources to foot the bill of returning Nigerians. Onyeama said this on Friday, May 15, 2020, at the media briefing by the Presidential task Force on COVID-19. The minister while addressing complaints about the directives that returning Nigerians from abroad have to pay N290,000 for their isolation and feeding ahead of their evacuation, said the government would have evacuated all Nigerians that desire to return home if it had the resources. According to The Punch, Onyeama explained that the returnees could not be housed at the NYSC camps or school dormitories because each of them had to be kept in a room. He maintained that the only option was to keep them in hotels, adding that the best room rate in Abuja was N15,000. He said, “This is not by any stretch of imagination something the government is happy to do. As I mentioned, if the resources were there, we would evacuate everybody.” It would be recalled that the Federal Government on Thursday, May 14, 2020, directed all its embassies not to airlift any Nigerian who did not pay for his quarantine and feeding ahead of the evacuation. https://mynewspage.com.ng/2020/05/16/coronavirus-foreign-affairs-minister-explains-why-returning-nigerians-have-to-pay/

Football Is Back!!!! Bundesliga Is Back!!!! Yay! Weekend Boredom Will Reduce But The Biggest Question Here is CAN BORUSIA DORTMUND CATCH BAYERN at the top of the Table? Remember, So Many Injury Player Will Be Back AFP Sport takes a look at what is at stake on the field when the German top flight ends a two-month shutdown to play out its final nine matchdays. Some things stay the same… Teams have undergone testing and been forced into quarantine training camps because of the virus, and all matches will be played behind closed doors in the league with the highest attendances in world football. So this will not be the Bundesliga as we know it, but something else may be just as before — Bayern, the country’s most successful club, are on track to win another title, which would be their eighth in a row. They had put a patchy start to the season under Niko Kovac behind them before the shutdown, with Hansi Flick coming in as coach and Bayern winning 10 and drawing one of their last 11 league games. The Bavarians are four points clear of Dortmund at the top and have been busy since their last game, with Flick signing a new contract until 2023. Key players Thomas Mueller and Alphonso Davies followed suit by penning extensions of their own, while former striker Miroslav Klose has joined as assistant coach. With Robert Lewandowski scoring 25 goals in 23 games, Bayern are formidable. They still have to visit Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen, although it remains to be seen how much home advantage will matter without fans. Let's Discuss Here;- https://mynewspage.com.ng/2020/05/13/the-bundesliga-is-back-so-can-dortmund-catch-bayern/ |
In music, some people argue debut albums are the easiest to make. Be that as it may, we are not here for philosophical arguments. Debut albums are still albums and albums are hard to make. In 2010, I was watching a documentary of St. Louis rapper, Nelly. While speaking about his diamond-selling debut album, Country Grammar, he said something along the lines of, ‘You have your whole life to make your debut album, that’s why sophomore albums make artists nervous.’ Whatever the case might be, quality debut albums need appreciation – especially in Nigerian Hip-Hop. Here are our choices of the 10 best debut albums in Nigerian Hip-Hop since 1999. 10) Album: Pirated Copy Artist : 2Shotz Year of release: 2004 Tracks/Duration: 20 songs, 01:18:14 Hits: 1 – Carry Am Go Label: Trybes Records Features: 2 – Big Lo, Del Producers: eLDee High point: Everything. Sounds like: The story of your life. Thoughts: This is a socio-politically charged body of work with the soul of classic Hip-Hop. It might not be 2Shotz ‘s best album, but it’s good enough. 9) Album: African American Artist : Sinzu (Sauce Kid) Year of release: 2010 Tracks/Duration: 20 songs, 01:18:14 Hits: 1 – ‘Under G’ Label: Ostrakon Records Features: 8 – 9ice, Don Jazzy, Lynnx, Meaku, Banky W, Iceberg Slim, Ghetto P Producers: Don Jazzy, Sossick, eLDee, Knighthouse, IKON High point: ‘Airplane Mode’ Sounds like: IJGB that likes lamba Thoughts: Coming off ‘Money Long,’ Nigerian Hip-Hop heads were not convinced by Sauce Kid. In fact, a lot of Hip-Hop heads will still argue that African American was an average album – it was not. The first half of the album is made up of pop records and the second half is made up of grimy Hip-Hop beats that the Nigerian Hip-Hop community could not relate with. Nonetheless, it gave Sinzu the confidence to be Nigeria’s best rapper in 2011 and parts of 2012. 8.) Album: Everybody Loves Ice Prince Artist : Ice Prince Year of release: 2011 Tracks/Duration: 20 songs, 01:16:03 Hits: 2 – ‘Oleku’ featuring Brymo, ‘Superstar’ Label: Chocolate City Features: 8 – Yung L, J-Milla, Wizkid, 2Baba, Brymo, Wizboyy, Sean Tero and Samklef Producers: Jesse Jagz, Samklef, MI Abaga, Chopstix, E Kelly and Wizboyy. High point: ‘Oleku’ featuring Brymo Sounds like: Chocolate City wanted to make money Thoughts: In 2012, this album was named Best Rap Album at the Headies. But guys, when it dropped Ice Prince got a bloodbath from Hip- Hop head son Twitter NG. They hated his rap technique and delivery. They failed to understand that there are different ways to make rap music. These Hip-Hop heads particularly hated the commercial drive of Everybody Loves Ice Prince. In the Nigerian music industry, Terri’s case is as peculiar as he is articulate and confident. His ability to adequately express himself portrays an underlying intelligence. For a 20-year-old, he provides surprisingly concise answers to even the most difficult questions. Speaking with him was as interesting as it was eye-opening – not for any reason other than a view into his mind and story. He is also open and introspective. For example, he says that he dislikes being ungathered and loves being composed. With gusto, he goes, “You might go crazy, but all that craze should end in your space. The optics matter and people will say things. Sometimes, that might not mean anything because people will talk regardless, but not caring is how people get a bad reputation and gather things that will haunt them.” He then continues with realism, “You might plan, but things dey happen wey fit make all your plans rest. But as much as you can, you have to stay in control.” Not being carefree in life led to how Terri refused to go see some of his uncles who came to visit him in the thick of COVID-19. Terri jokes that, “Bro, I love them – they’re my family but I can’t be careless, so I refused to go see them and they understood. I have been indoors for too long (laughs).” That was the start of our conversation and it continues with a jump… TERRI JOINS ‘STARBOY’ In February 2018, the Lagos-born and bred Edo State indigene, Akinre Terry – the first of four children – signed to the Wizkid-owned label, Starboy Music. This was after he got a message from and had a meeting with Mut4y – one-half of Legendury Beatz and Head of Music at Starboy. The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has said that 950 children in Nigeria could die daily from preventable causes over the next six months as the coronavirus pandemic threatens to weaken the health system. UNICEF added that Nigeria could record about 6,800 more maternal deaths in just six months. In a statement, UNICEF said, “the estimate is based on an analysis by researchers from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, newly published in The Lancet Global Health journal.” “In a commentary to the Lancet report, UNICEF warns these disruptions could result in potentially devastating increases in maternal and child deaths.’’ It added that the analysis gives three scenarios of the potential impact of COVID-19 in 118 low- and middle-income countries, including Nigeria. “In the worst-case scenario, the estimate is that an additional nearly 173,000 under-five deaths could occur in just six months, due to reductions in routine health service coverage levels – including routine vaccinations – and an increase in child wasting.” The possible child death figures from UNICEF would be added to the 475,200 children who already die before their fifth birthday every six months in Nigeria. This may wipe out all the progress made in ending preventable under-five child mortality in Nigeria. UNICEF Executive Director, Henrietta Fore said “about 6,800 more Nigerian maternal deaths could also occur in just six months. Under a worst-case scenario, the global number of children dying before their fifth birthdays could increase for the first time in decades. We must not let mothers and children become collateral damage in the fight against the virus.” Reacting to this, UNICEF Nigeria’s Country Representative, Peter Hawkins, said: “We have made steady progress in reducing preventable child and maternal deaths in Nigeria over the last 20 years – and it would be devastating if that progress is lost or reversed – devastating for Nigerian families, communities and the country as a whole.” “The under-five mortality rate has declined gradually over the last two decades in Nigeria – from 213 deaths per thousand in 1990 to 120 today. This is likely due to improved access and coverage of key life-saving interventions at primary health care and community levels and improved immunization rates.” “But in countries with still overall weak health systems, like Nigeria, COVID-19 is causing disruptions in medical supply chains and straining financial and human resources. Visits to health care centres are declining due to lockdowns, curfews, and transport disruptions, and as communities remain fearful of infection.” “The estimates in this new study show that if for whatever reason, routine health care is disrupted, the rise in child and maternal deaths will be devastating.” Read https://mynewspage.com.ng/2020/05/14/unicef-predicts-over-900-children-may-die-daily-in-nigeria/
