SportsChelsea Extends Thiago Silva Contract by Sheynex(op): 4:15pm On Jun 04, 2021
Following the Champions League final, Chelsea Football Club has exercised an option to extend Thiago Silva’s contract by one year, taking his time at Stamford Bridge into a second season.

The Brazilian’s first Chelsea campaign could scarcely have gone much better. A composed and classy influence in the heart of our defence from the moment he arrived on a free transfer from PSG, Thiago Silva featured 34 times in all competitions and scored twice.

Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia said: ‘When we brought Thiago Silva in last summer, we knew we were adding a world-class player to the squad. Thiago has duly shown everyone at Chelsea his immense quality throughout this season, and he has had a huge influence on and off the pitch for us.

'We said when he signed that we hoped Thiago would add new trophies to his impressive list of honours, and he has done just that with our success in the Champions League this weekend. We now hope that he carries on in exactly the same fashion in the coming year.’

While injury cut short the Brazilian’s time on the pitch in Porto in the Champions League final, he was still able to celebrate his maiden triumph in the competition at the age of 36, and his professionalism and commitment to the cause throughout his first year at the club has already made him a popular figure with the Blues faithful.

Thiago Silva’s new deal will run until the end of the 2021/22 season, when Chelsea will be looking to defend our European crown as well as challenge for domestic honours. Thiago Silva’s experience will be vital on both fronts.

EducationLAUTECH Bans Final-year Sign Out Celebration by Sheynex(op): 11:07pm On Mar 30, 2021
The management of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso has banned final-year students from engaging in sign out celebrations, popularly referred to as log out by students.

The Public Relations Officer of the university, Lekan Fadeyi, confirmed this to our correspondent on the telephone on Tuesday.

He noted that the decision was taken at a management meeting held Wednesday, March 24, 2021.

He alleged that the programme promotes gross immoralities and indiscipline.

Fadeyi said, “It is true that the management has banned what the students call sign out. The event has always been full of indiscipline activities. That is why the management in its wisdom said rather than have our students misbehave during that activity that is not officially recognised, that we should better put a stop to it officially.

“The management had its meeting on March 24 and the decision was reached.

“It is not to erode the joy that comes with graduating successfully. I think such joy should come with events such as convocation, which is recognised worldwide. When you say you are signing out and use that as a smokescreen to attend gatherings that have not been officially sanctioned, I do not think that there is any joy that you can derive from that.”

SportsUCL: Mount, Jorginho, Abraham, T. Silva To Miss Atletico Madrid Clash (see Why) by Sheynex(op): 6:08pm On Mar 16, 2021
UCL: Tuchel Reveal Why Mason Mount, Jorginho And Two Chelsea Key Player Will Miss Atletico Madrid Clash

Thomas Tuchel has confirmed that injured duo Thiago Silva and Tammy Abraham remained sidelined and will miss tomorrow’s Champions League tie with Atletico Madrid at Stamford Bridge, alongside suspended pair Jorginho and Mason Mount.

Our German head coach revealed that both Thiago and Tammy will sit out our Round of 16 second leg against the La Liga leaders but hopes the duo will return to action after the international break.

Tuchel will have to make do without two midfielders for this clash, which we hold a narrow 1-0 aggregate lead from the first leg in Bucharest, with Jorginho and Mount suspended as Diego Simeone brings his Atleti side to the Bridge.

‘We have no fresh injuries but we are are without two key players for us tomorrow in Mount and Jorginho,’ Tuchel explained at his pre-match press conference.

‘Especially with Mason for his offensive skills and his power to break the lines with strong dribbling and his shots. Atletico are one of the best teams in Europe for not giving shooting chances away, so of course it’s a blow to miss an offensive player for a game such as this one.

‘They are important players for us but we have a strong group and we have to adapt and find solutions to this.

‘We also need to work without Thiago Silva and Tammy Abraham for this game. They are not quite right yet but with an international break now coming, I don’t think there is too much risk in me saying that we expect them to join us again after the international break.

‘So we are missing four key players for this game but that makes the selection a little bit easier, because we can select 23 players in the Champions League.

‘We will use the whole squad. We can make five substitutes during the match, so we have a clear idea of what we can do.’

RomanceRape Victim Refuses To Testify Against Her Abuser Because He Sexually Satisfied by Sheynex(op): 1:55pm On Nov 10, 2020
Wonders shall never end in Africa!

A Botswanan rape victim pulled a shocker as she refused to testify against a Zimbabwean man who was arrested for raping her.

According to New Zimbabwe, prosecutors in Botswana were left stunned when a rape victim (name not supplied) who was raped by Oscar Chabaya (34) in Botswana refused to testify against him.

The lady is alleged to have instead asked police officers handling the case to give her Chabaya’s contact details as he had sexually satisfied her.

Chabaya was accused of targeting tertiary students under the age of 24 before breaking into their homes at night to rape them. He would tell his victims he was good in bed and they would call him begging for more.

Before raping his victims, the suspect who was always armed with a knife is said to have toyed with the women. He was arrested in April 2017 after police matched his DNA to an earlier robbery case in which he suffered a cut on his hand while escaping.

However, in spite of the lady’s refusal to testify against her abuser, the prosecution proved beyond a reasonable doubt that the sexual intercourse occurred without the victims’ consent.

Ruling on the case, Magistrate Willie said rape cases were on the increase in Botswana and perpetrators like Chabaya deserved stiffer sentences.

Politics#endsars: Oyo Creates Platforms To Report Police Violations by Sheynex(op): 12:35pm On Oct 18, 2020
#EndSARS: Oyo creates platforms to report police violations

...unveils email, links

...to set up judicial panel

The Government of Oyo State has created an email account and a section on the state’s website for residents of the state to report incidences of police violations and brutality.

Residents of the state can report cases of police violations via the email address, reportpolice@mail.oyostate.gov.ng or through the link on the Oyo State website, https://oyostate.gov.ng/reportpolice/, where they can fill out a form.

The state government, in a statement on Sunday, said that plans are already afoot to set up a judicial panel that will look into the various forms of abuses and violations that are reported.

It stated that names of members of the panel would be announced shortly.

According to the statement, the Governor of Oyo, Engineer Seyi Makinde, gave this directive at the weekend in line with his earlier stance that the genuine grievances of the #EndSARS protesters, which bother on police brutality, must be addressed by the government.

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mr. Taiwo Adisa, indicated that the development also followed a directive to governors to set up judicial panels to probe incidences of police brutality in their states.

The statement further disclosed that the platform is domiciled in the Office of the Governor and that it is aimed at demonstrating Governor Makinde’s determination to address the menace of police brutality, rights abuse and extortion, with a bird's-eye view monitoring mechanism.

PoliticsEndsars: Nigerians Hold Candle Light Remembrance For Victims Across States by Sheynex(op): 9:00pm On Oct 16, 2020
Nigerian youths including protesters tonight, have taken to the streets to hold a candle light remembrance service for victims of police brutality in Nigeria.

Recall that for sometime now, the protesters have taken to the streets in various states to agitate for an end to the activities of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), following the incessant deaths caused by them.

Reacting, the Inspector-general of police, Mohammed Adamu on Sunday, announced that he had disolved the unit, and a few days after, announced the establishment of another unit to replace SARS, Special Weapons and Tactics Team.

Nigerians however, kicked against the idea, saying it was only a disguise and calling for an ouright ban ever since.

Today, the protesters chose to remember fallen hereos who were killed by SARS officials, and candle lights are being held accross various states in honour of them.

Some of them have taken to Twitter to share pictures and videos from the night, as well as the names of some of the victims.

EducationCOVID-19: College Of Education Lecturers Not Ready For School Resumption – Union by Sheynex(op): 3:09pm On Sep 09, 2020
The College of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU) has said that its members are not ready to return to school anytime soon except the Federal Government upgrades institutions for conducive learning.

The president of COEASU, Nuhu Ogirima, made this known to PREMIUM TIMES in an interview on Wednesday.

The union’s position comes a day after the Academic Staff of Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) corroborated the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) stance that there are no provisions to meet COVID-19 precautionary guidelines in universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.

Mr Ogirima told our correspondent that the Federal Government is yet to put the necessary facilities in place for resumption to take place.

“There are lots of things to be put in place. Many colleges of education do not even have enough chairs for social distancing. We’ve been in a crisis because of the neglect of the education sector by the government.”

“We had issues in 2018 calling for proper upgrade of infrastructure in our schools, this is 2020 and nothing has been done. Most colleges of education lack enough seats. When examinations are drawing nearer, students move chairs from one place to another.”

He wondered how social distancing would be achieved in schools where facilities are not in order during Coronavirus pandemic.

“Schools are not ready for resumption. Governments are just window dressing. They are not engaging academic staffs. Private institutions are not critical players, the public institutions are the critical players. You can’t just fumigate schools and believe that’s all, how do you determine those who have contacted the virus from their homes? What kind of hostels exist in our schools? These have been the cry of the Union and the pandemic now vindicate us.”

“Our hostels are as congested as lecture halls. If tertiary institutions are asked to resume, then the figures NCDC gives us daily are not correct. With those figures, schools will be in a mess if asked to resume”, he said. “The country has not even tested up to 2% of its population. What about those asymptomatic? The country may be sitting on time bomb except there is befitting isolation centres and facilities upgrade, else, we are not ready to resume”, he said.

On Tuesday, President of ASUP, Anderson Ezeibe told this newspaper that the federal government’s plan on resumption is a threat to students and lecturers.

Earlier, ASUU president, Biodun Ogunyemi, said that schools should only be opened when considered safe for lives of students, parents and teachers.

Already, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) said about 78 private universities insisted that they were ready to resume academic activities in their various institutions.

EducationCOVID-19: Polytechnic Lecturers Back ASUU; Warn Against Resumption Of Schools by Sheynex(op): 10:26pm On Sep 08, 2020
Nigeria’s polytechnic lecturers under the aegis of the Academic Staff of Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) have warned the federal government against reopening tertiary institutions.

The union corroborated the position of its sister union, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), that there are no provisions to meet COVID-19 precautionary guidelines in universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.

The president of ASUP, Anderson Ezeibe, made the position of the union known to PREMIUM TIMES in an interview on Tuesday.

According to Mr Ezeibe, the federal government’s plan on resumption is a threat to students and lecturers.

“The truth of the matter is that we need not to be emotional about the resumption. Institutions were closed down for COVID-19 pandemic. The spread is well known and the closure of institutions was precautionary to mitigate it. The question now is what steps have the government taken in tertiary institutions between March and now,” he said.

“If schools resume now then we don’t have any need to have shut in the first place. The agitation of students and parents are only emotional and the position of private institutions owners are mainly for personal gain.”

Mr Ezeibe, however, said the polytechnic lecturers are not ready to expose themselves to risks.

“The truth is polytechnics are not ready. There are lots of practical preparations to be done. Many institutions have up to 10,000 students. We are expecting that before resumption, there should be stakeholders forum where reality steps should be discussed. Before now, polytechnic lecturers and cleaners are outsourced for nearly 10 years. What it means is that institutions rely on contractors to clean. We don’t have good healthcare facilities and many more.

“Are there isolation spaces in tertiary institutions. What about hostels capacities? How will all these be managed? The government simply wants to turn students and lecturers into Guinea pigs. Let there be stakeholders’ meetings for conclusion on resumption. This is the best solution,” he said.

Earlier, ASUU president, Biodun Ogunyemi, had told PREMIUM TIMES that schools should only be opened when considered safe for students and lecturers.

“They have brought out guidelines and conditions for school resumption, they must now supervise and ensure that those conditions are met. Beyond formulating a policy, they must see to its implementation. So, we are saying it is not just a matter of putting things on papers but implementation from primary schools to tertiary institutions,” he said then.

On August 24, Nigerian government said it was optimistic that tertiary institutions would be resuming soon. The Minister of State for Education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, said the Federal Ministry of Education was working with stakeholders for the safe reopening of schools.

Moreover, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that about 78 private universities insisted that they were ready for the resumption of their institutions.

Erica said “The lesson I have learnt from staying in the house is that I should be fine with being alone. “I noticed I didn’t like to be alone which is not meant to be.”

Recall Erica was disqualified from the show after she got a third strike from Biggie for bullying and violating the house rules.
