this thread is really insightful...
thanks to all contributors.

I'm actually in a similar dilemma...
(B.sc Accounting-First class/Best Graduating student , M.sc in view, ICAN in progress, rounding off nysc very soon)

I schooled in a state university however and I'm not an indigene of that state as such I'm wondering how easy/difficult it would be getting in... I applied to start my M.sc there also.. I've always loved teaching people, my only reservation with GA/ lecturing is I really would love to go to the field before coming back to teach others.

for example, I find it amusing that someone who lectures Auditing has never audited any accounts before.. I dont know...

therefore.. would y'all advise a graduate like to work and garner experience or to go straight with my "textbook knowledge"?

actually, it seems you don't know how sarcasm works at all. It is highly dependent on facial expressions and tones. Both of which are not available in this medium. One does not simply make a statement and tag it sarcasm.

Also, I don't think it's "thanks to my A1" at all, rather, the word is "Hence, my A1"

Good morning. cheesy

Oga just shift... you lack words to explain your quick conclusion.. shudda just let that slide

Based on your smart logic, Sarcasm doesn't exist is literature books right? because they're in written form and there's no facial expressions n tone? .. sorry bro, it very well does and my reply "you're very smart" had a tone!, u were just too 'deaf' to hear it. Thats me schooling you on Literature (another course I'm good at ("thanks" to another A1) lol

P.S: I didn't know the topic had changed from 'Math' to 'English'.. bye forever!

Hi, definitely, the current opening is against next year and i don't think you could avoid the English test. If your prospective school doesn't ask for it (which i doubt), it is one of the requirements for the award of the scholarship. Download the guidelines and peruse to learn more.

My advice: carry out a thorough research to know the school(s) that's going to suit your purpose (or purposes) apply and begin preparing to take an English test which could be any of IELTS, Toefl, or Pearson (can't remember if it's limited to any of these now).
Don't be scared of English proficiency tests, with the right preparation and mindset, success is possible. Some people have scaled this hurdle in the past, so why not you, rise up to the challenge. All the best. Cheers.

thanks a lot !!
my reason for avoiding those tests as I said earlier is not necessarily fear as I may have sounded , it's just because I'm involved with a alot of study (ican ) and thats not really an exam you combine with another...
all the same, ild work something out.

he's not, actually.
Solving a mathematical problem means using mathematical methods to arrive at an answer. So, when he solved the puzzle, he provided the answer. And they knew the answer was correct because there was no error in his calculations.

He doesn't know how math works. And it seems, neither do you.

actually I do .. (thanks to my A1 )
but I guess you don't know how Sarcasm works and neither does the dumb one who quoted me also!

I want to apply for the Commonwealth scholarship against next year and they have a list of schools that they partner with. Now ild have to start applying to some of those schools but I need to know the schools amongst the ones listed that will be "easy" (maybe those that aren't too competitive ) to get admitted into, and the location isn't too bad . Secondly I need to ask if there are specific unis that dont require IELTS or toefl and the rest.. Co's I'm trying hard to avoid all those things too..
plus I intend to study (M.sc accounting and finance)

please I need ur input here
I wrote the aptitude tests on 13th June, did my documentation (online cos I'm not in Lagos) and waited for an invite for AC but instead got a msg yesterday that they had met their quota for TRPS and that my application would be kept "in view" of future openings..
can anything be done about that? should I keep waiting or just move on? can one change preferred unit? ...
just need to know, cos I'm aware one can only apply once to KPMG.
thanks.

Education / Re: Reasons Why First Class Students Never Become First Class People In Life by Shinelle(f): 9:55pm On Jul 27, 2015
I've read through the post and realise that every single point raised therein relates to every student within any class of degree... it affects everyone alike; so why are the first class students ridiculed with such faulty generalizations always on NL?

and then to the responding posts.. wow! Brings me to my next question :

Why is there so much hate on the phrase 'First Class' in this country?..
Inferiority complex, Self-consolation or just plain stupidity?

I mean,is it free? Were you offered? If it were free, would you accept?
If yes, then why the hate? If no, then why are you still uncomfortable with your choice?

"Examination is not the true test of knowledge" are you just knowing ? why did you buy jamb form to start with?

Has any first class graduate come to you to beg for food? Have they ever approached you to "exchange" results? Why cry more than the 'bereaved' then?

First class is an end in itself, not a means to an end please...they studied hard, read, memorised, stayed up kate to do the group work you all dodged, sat exams, aced them... and they've gotten the reward! Just like yall..whatever your own class may be.

Post graduate life is just like every other race, it requires fresh hardwork to also come 'first' in it.

Please let's avoid discouraging the young aspiring students...aim for the best always..
Like people always say "money isn't the key to Happiness" but it's more comforting to cry in a Bentley than under the scorching sun in a keke..lol

The sky is big enough for all to fly people! ; Live and let live....

Whenever some people see 'first class '... it's like pepper has been rubbed on their entire body...
First class graduates cram... bla bla
examination isnt 'true' test of knowledge...lol what is?
most 2.1 perform better if given opportunity. .
was your 4-5 years not enough "opportunity"?

Hate it or take it... There will always be strata and 1 will continually come before 2 in numerals..

This has only shown your level of ignorance, if you go up north you'll know how irrelevant ICAN is to them there, they give more relevance to ANAN

Well, not entirely true.. up north, ican isnt preferred to anan (esp public sector), theyre treated equally.. unlike d south where ican is always preferred.

By the way, ANAN has finally clinched the accountant general position... trust me theyve longed for it!

If youre in the north, or pubic sector generally in Nigeria, you have plenty money 300-500k for exams, u dont like very strenous and challenging study, probably just for promotion in civil service, ANAN it is.

If youre a young aspiring professional with hopes to fit into private and public sector,in Nigeria and maybe abroad, ready for real study ,and challenging exams and syllabi.. ICAN .

Education / Re: How To Wake A Dead CGPA In School by Shinelle(f): 8:50pm On Jul 06, 2015

getting good CGPA is a process and knowing how CGPA is calculated, helps u to follow the procedure. If u read day and night without knowing d impact of continuous assessment, class work, attendance, buying text book/handout etc on ur CGPA, u may end up not getting the desire score. I across all levels while i was in school and i did see a good number of students working but fail at the end until they realised they cant catch something they do not know its operations.

Please refer back to the title of the thread , only then will you understand why I said "knowing how to calculate cgpa" isnt an issue "TO ME" . Resurrecting the dead cgpa by studying is.

get the good scores first, how to calculate cgpa can be learnt in 30 mins.. excel/spreadsheet can help u with that too...

Jobs/Vacancies / Re: Why Do I Keep Failing Job Tests? by Shinelle(f): 10:30pm On Jul 05, 2015
The problem with our 'good grades' is that they tend to give a sense of entitlement and this is wrong. .

That you had a 2.1 or 1 doesnt mean you will remember that sum of angles in a triangle =180, or the formula for volume of cylinder . These are easy examples that ofcourse couldn't have been taught at degree level.. therefore such aptitude test duly test 'aptitude ' . For the brainy ppl, minimal study will get them to pass, but for some of us, we many have to go back and study and practice. Note that such study is better done under no pressure, not wen the test is in two days , then you come on NL and drop emails... it will be difficult to cover.

My advice therefore is, take time out and study these test formats, time urself and pray against confusion in the hall... May God grant you success !

guy you try but let me add these, without which all effort may end in doing the old things all over:
LEARN AND UNDERSTAND HOW THE CGPA IS BEING CALCULATED: this is the first step for everyone who really want to consciously succeed in building a good CGPA. you cant consciously succeed in something you do not know about but u may succeed accidentally. many student read tirelessly yet fail at the end, reason being that they don't understand the working and operation of CGPA.

How to calculate cgpa isnt the issue to me..
study hard irrespective of credit units and all (e.g a student who makes all As will have a 5.00, all Bs 4.00) , make your As and Bs... cgpa will calculate itself..and u will smile home
calculator usually comes out once the Cs, Ds and es get in the way, worst still, carry over...
May it not be your portions though (undergraduates)

The number one secret to a good CGPA is to start hardwork early , ie from your first test in uni...reason being, no one likes to drop.. even if u have no reason to continue, the thought of you loosing ur title as 'guru' will make you maintain and sustain ur progress..
however, at any point you decide to start, put in your very best still and pray for God's intervention.

Again, my advice is always aim for the highest in anything you find yourself. Aim for first class, if you miss it, a 2.1 wont be a bad compensation or at worst 2.2. If school is not for you, quit and find your drive and aim to be the best in it!

You cant be in university and be making excuses of poor grades using dangote and bill gates as back up...
drop out and go and be the 'bill gate ' of your time in ur chosen path. whether in football, fashion, modelling, whatever...

Ok bye
