The Rivers State Police Command has said that two suspected kidnappers have confessed that they demanded one AK-47 and 12 general purpose machine guns as ransom for the release of their victim, Mrs. Chinyere Olumma. Olumma was rescued on Friday, May 22. The suspects, according to the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ahmad Mohammad, had given the family of the victim an option of paying N50m as ransom or providing one AK-47 and 12 general purpose machine guns before their victim would be released. Mohammad, who spoke with newsmen on Tuesday, disclosed that the hoodlums had initially collected the sum of N1m from Olumma’s family for the upkeep of their victim. Luck, however, ran out of the two suspects as they were rounded up by the police in Abua as they shared the N1m meant for the victim’s upkeep. They were caught in one of the suspects’ room. “It was sometime around 1am in the morning, they kidnapped one woman by the name Mrs. Chinyere Oluma from Erema in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area. They kidnapped her and then made contact with the family of the victim. “They demanded N50m with an option of providing one AK-47 rifle and 12 RPMG, that is General Purpose Machine Gun. The kidnappers called the family of the victim to give them N1m for the upkeep of the victim and themselves. The N1m you see with them is the money they demanded for the upkeep of the victim and themselves. So, this money you are seeing is the N1m that was given to them. They (kidnappers) did not know we were tracking them after they received the N1m. “So, we tracked and caught them at Abua. When our men got there, they were four and they were with the money before they were arrested. You can see the charms we recovered from them. On their way coming from their hideout, their colleague from behind opened fire on our men. Our men injured one of the hoodlums, who later died in a hospital and then, one of them escaped. The two we have here could not escape and out of the pressure mounted on them, they took our men to where they kept the woman (their victim) inside the bush near Egbeda,” Mohammad said. Apart from the cash sum of N1m recovered from them, a rope used in tying their victim to a tree was also recovered from the suspected kidnappers. However, one of the suspects, identified as Solomon Obigwe, said he never knew that his friend (Christian Enwe) was a kidnapper and that he was unfortunate to be with him (Enwe) and his friends when police struck. Obigwe, who was silent on the confession he made to the police, pleaded for forgiveness and promised to turn a new leaf. “I was there when he (Christian Enwe) came in with his friends with his bag. As he came, he told me as a younger brother that we should go to my house. When we got there, I asked how manage they got such money. They told me they kidnapped somebody and the person paid them this money. “We argued over their action. I have never kidnapped before and I have never had that in mind since I was born. I was arguing about how they got such amount of money when police came and arrested four of us,” Obigwe said. http://www.punchng.com/feature/city-news-feature/kidnappers-demand-ak-47-machine-guns-as-ransom/

The nation may continue to grapple with the effect of the latest fuel crisis until next week as marketers of petroleum products have said the current supply challenge may not end this week. The marketers also confirmed in separate interviews with one of our correspondents on Tuesday that loading of petrol had resumed across board with members of the Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria and Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association driving the exercise. But they told our correspondent that because of the May 29 public holiday, the petrol supply challenge was likely to prevail up until next week. The fuel scarcity in Abuja continued on Tuesday despite the commencement of loading of the product at depots across the country. Hundreds of motorists were seen in few petrol stations that sold the product as they spent quality man-hours in queues. One of the marketers, who spoke to our correspondent in Lagos, confirmed that some of them had resorted to doing overnight loading of the product to further ease the supply. The source said Folawiyo, Capital Oil and Nipco were the marketers leading the overnight loading of petrol at the depots in Apapa, Lagos. The source noted that the impact of the continual loading at the depots would not be felt immediately because of the excess demand that had characterised the market. Another major marketer also told our correspondent that the Pipelines and Product Marketing Company, a subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, had pumped in additional product into the system. But he noted that major marketers had yet to start the importation of petrol. This, therefore, means all the products currently being consumed by Nigerians were sourced from the PPMC. Meanwhile, most filling stations in Lagos, Ogun and Oyo states have refused to revert to the official N87 per litre pump price. Petrol was being sold for prices ranging from N150 to N250 per litre in these states as of Tuesday. Transport fares, which hitherto rose by 300 per cent when the petrol supply situation was tense, had dropped by about 100 per cent as of Tuesday. More vehicular movements were experienced in these states following the improvement in product supply. DAPPMA, however, in a statement on Tuesday, signed by its Executive Secretary, Mr. Olufemi Adewole, reiterated that the association never embarked on any shutdown of members’ depots/ facilities. The statement read in part, “Contrary to the erroneous stories and messages being bandied about, it was the Petroleum Tanker Drivers arm of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas workers and Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners, who normally transport these products from marketers’ depots, that embarked on the strike following their publicised complaints of not being paid their legitimate outstanding transport claims by marketers who participate in the Petroleum Support Fund Scheme as a result of being owed huge reimbursement for petrol imports to date. “We have maintained that we will sell and load all petroleum products available to us even as delays in the payments of our reimbursement have continued to impede and adversely affect our operations. The suspension of loading in the last few days has been due to the strike embarked upon by the PTD-NUPENG and NARTO. These two bodies had refused to load out/ lift petroleum products for distribution from our depots. That is the true position.” Since the unions embarked on this action, DAPMA said it had been engaged in a dialogue with them to seek amicable ways of resolving the problem bearing in mind its debilitating impact on the Nigerian public. http://www.punchng.com/business/business-economy/fuel-queues-will-disappear-next-week-marketers/ |
WORRIED by the incessant fuel crises facing the country, Niger State Governor, Babangida Aliyu, has said that fuel subsidy is the main form of corruption in the country. He said that monies believed to be coming from SURE-P were from the Federation Account. A total removal of subsidy from petroleum products by the Federal Government, he said, remains the only solution needed. Aliyu made this known in Minna at the inauguration of a three-star hotel constructed jointly by the Niger State Development Company Limited and the state SURE-P. He said, “I have been vindicated. When some years back I took a principled position as one of the few governors who said ‘remove fuel subsidy; it is a cartel for corruption.’ “Many people did not understand that time. Some publicist did not agree with me. They said, ‘Don’t remove it; it is the common man that will suffer.’ I said which common man, when at the time you are talking about subsidy the common man goes to buy it three times the price that you call subsidy? He added, “Earlier, we deceived ourselves that there was SURE-P money, but it was the money from our Federation Account that they were giving us as SURE- P fund. But we are happy, at least they have set that aside. You will remember when I said remove fuel subsidy. They burnt my town; people were imported from outside to burn Minna. “There is no government out there; you are the government. Anything that is done is for your welfare. Own it, take it and don’t allow somebody to come and reduce you and make you a pauper. Own up what is yours. Government is not all about the officials alone.” On the need to sustain the subsidy, he said it would not be in the interest of anybody. Aliyu said, “Therefore, I ask everyone – this subsidy is for whom? In the whole of Niger State at that time, even the government’s fuel stations were not selling at the subsidised rate. Yes, they were selling a bit lower than the commercial filling stations, but they were also above the subsidy. “Why were we having problems? It is because those who have been enjoying the subsidy have seen the sign that it may be removed and they are afraid. Subsidy is a cartel for corruption.” He said people needed to know how the resources were being managed. He said, “People must know how their resources are being expended. I kept crying that we could not rely on the oil revenue. Now, the truth has come in our own time. I thought we will leave the scene before the crash, but the crash has come. “The removal of fuel subsidy will also ensure that the activities of ‘mafias’ in the oil business are stopped while also guaranteeing regular supply of the product in all parts of the country. Governor Aliyu added that the only solution to the frequent fuel crisis facing the country would be the total removal of subsidy from petroleum products by the Federal Government.” He said it was believed by many that subsidy removal will affect only the common man, “but those who are enjoying subsidy are now afraid that the fuel subsidy maybe removed.” He however argued that the subsidy on petroleum product was currently being enjoyed by only a section of the society that has the necessary connection to be importers of the commodity. Aliyu asked, “Is it not an irony that we sell crude oil and we end up buying refined petroleum from the international market?” The Director General of the state SURE-P board, Alhaji Hassan Nuhu, in his address, said the 50-bed three-star hotel was constructed at over N620m and had been given to a private firm to manage for five years. http://www.punchng.com/news/fuel-subsidy-breeds-corruption-says-niger-gov/ |
