By: Akinloye Oyeniyi It is no more news that mere filing of an appeal does not act as an automatic order of injunction or stay of execution. Aside filing the appeal, the appellants must also formally apply to the Supreme Court for an order of injunction, demonstrating special or exceptional circumstances which the failure to grant such order would destroy or render the appeal nugatory. When such application is filed, the filing does not translate to an effective order until the court formally hears the application to determine the merits, usually showing exceptional circumstances and grants it. The applicant must file a motion on notice, which is then heard and argued in court where the court will either turn such application down or grant an order restraining any of, or all the successful party/ies from acting on a part or totality of such decision of the Court of Appeal. Without a formal Supreme Court hearing of the application and granting an order of injunction, the successful party can proceed unrestrained until appeal is heard and decided. So, the appeal and application for order of injunction, filed by the Turaki and his group Friday evening, but yet to be heard by the Supreme Court, have no binding restraining force on the Abdulrahman-led NCWC and the PDP National Convention. 1 Like

In a landmark move to strengthen the relationship between the government and indigenous authorities, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has presented land allocation documents to members of the FCT Council of Chiefs. Speaking during a meeting with the traditional rulers in Abuja on Friday, the Minister also announced a total waiver on all statutory fees for the land titles, acting on the direct instructions of the President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Wike emphasized that while the legal framework of the FCT often overlooks original ownership, the Tinubu led administration recognizes the historical presence of indigenous people. Wike added that, "We cannot deny the fact that there are indigenous people who were here before the creation of the FCT. "The President said we must extend a hand of fellowship to you. If those who make peace cannot be appreciated with land, who should be?". The Minister commended the monarchs for their roles in ensuring the "most peaceful" Area Council elections in the territory’s history. To further enhance their capacity to maintain order, Wike promised the provision of utility vehicles for traditional rulers in the FCT. The Minister further listed several key infrastructure projects nearing completion in the satellite towns, scheduled for commissioning this June to include the completion of the Airport-Kuje road dualization, progress on the Bwari-Zuba link road, Apo/Karshi and Basan Jiwa as well as completion of the "Arab Road" network. The highlight of the event was the waiver of land processing fees, which Wike noted that it would be "unfair" to ask traditional rulers to scout for large sums of money to pay for land they have inhabited for generations. The Ona of Abaji, Alhaji (Dr.) Adamu Baba Yunusa, who serves as the Chairman of the Council, expressed gratitude to the President and the Minister, pledging the continued support of the traditional institutions for the administration's policies. 6 Likes

Court orders arrest of Tanimu Turaki For Giving False Information To Police …fixes April 22 for arraignment A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) sitting in Maitama has issued a bench warrant for the arrest of the self-appointed factional National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, (SAN). Justice Peter Kekemeke issued the arrest warrant on Thursday after Turaki failed to attend court for the purpose of his being arraigned on a one count criminal charge brought against him by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) in which he is accused of, among others, giving false information to the police. When the case was called on Thursday, lawyer to the prosecution, Usman Rabiu said the business of the court for the day was for Turaki to enter his plea to the charge. The count in the charge, marked: CR/647/2026 reads: That you Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, (SAN), male, No: 37 T. Y. Danjuma Street, Asokoro, Abuja on or about 5th October, 2022 at Abuja within the jurisdiction of this honourable court you gave false information to the Inspector-General of Police via petition dated 5th October, 2022 and signed by you on your letter head paper against one Saidi Mohammed Mainasara with intent to use the lawful power of Inspector-General of Police to the injury or annoyance of the said Muhammed Mainasara and you thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 140 of the Penal Code Law. Turaki's lawyer, Rabiu noted that the defendant was absent in court despite being served with the charge and also served with a hearing notice by the court, informing him about the day’s proceedings. The lawyer to the prosecution then invoked the provision of Section 396(2) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA), 2015 to urge the court to issue an arrest warrant for the defendant to be produced before the court for the purpose of his arraignment. Rabiu faulted the reference by the defence lawyer, Abdulaziz Ibrahim (SAN) to a motion he filed for the defendant, seeking that the charge be quashed. He argued that the defence could only challenge the validity of the charge only after the plea of the defendant has been taken. Ibrahim argued otherwise and urged the court to give him five more days to file written addresses to convince the court that the defendant’s presence was not required until the motion was determined. Ruling, Justice Kekemeke held that despite being aware of the day’s proceedings having been served with hearing notice and the charge, it was wrong for Turaki to fail to attend court without providing any reason. The judge noted that the defence lawyer did not deny that his client was served with hearing notice of Thursday’s proceedings, but failed to provide any reason why the defendant was not in court. Justice Kekemeke held that by the provision of Section 396(2) ACJA 2015 where a defendant, who is aware that a charge is pending against him in court but chose to stay away, the proper order to be made is for bench warrant to ensure the production of the defendant to answer to the charge. The judge held that the motion filed by the defendant seeking the quashing of the charge was not ripe for hearing, adding that such a motion could only be heard after the defendant’s plea had been taken. He proceeded to issue a bench warrant for Turaki’s arrest to compel the defendant to attend court to answer to the pending charge and adjourned till April 22 for his arraignment.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has described President Bola Tinubu’s support and commitment to timely project delivery as responsible for the massive infrastructural development being recorded in the territory. Wike said this on Wednesday in Abuja after inspecting ongoing projects across the FCT, noting that Tinubu closely monitored project implementation due to his overwhelming commitment to the wellbeing of FCT residents and quality service delivery. “Mr President is not just giving us support, but making sure that the jobs are done on time and expected quality. When the head gives you support, you have no reason for failure. “So I think our commitment or momentum is because we have a President who believes in providing basic infrastructure. Without his support, it would have been difficult to achieve this pace of development,” Wike added. The Minister explained that routine inspections allowed the government to monitor contractors’ progress in terms of speed and quality, ensuring that projects met standards and were delivered on schedule. At Arterial Road S1, from Ring Road II to the FCT Fire Service Station in Kaura District, Wike commended the pace and quality of work, expressing optimism the project would be completed and handed over within the next five months. Wike also inspected the extension of Obafemi Awolowo Way (N5) linking Gwarimpa, Life Camp, and Dape District with Karmo, which he said was 100 per cent complete and ready for inauguration to mark Tinubu’s third year in office. At the Nigerian Law School, Bwari, the minister inspected the construction of 10 bungalow housing units for teachers and staff, confirming that they had been completed, furnished, and ready for occupation. He also visited the construction of two hostels for students, one male and one female, expressing satisfaction with the female hostel, which was expected to be completed by November. “I think the contractor for the female hostel is doing well, and we need to encourage him to continue the pace. “Again, we are here, which is the male hostel. I am not impressed with the job. It looks like a quality job, but I am not impressed with the level of work done so far. “I thought the male hostel would be at the same level as the female hostel because they were awarded and mobilised simultaneously. Notwithstanding, the contractor has assured delivery by October or November,” Wike said. Wike also mentioned the award of a contract for the construction of auditorium at the school, saying the contractor will soon commence work.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has expressed the administration’s commitment to deeper a stronger collaboration with the Japanese government for its sustained investment in Nigeria’s development to fast-track the transformation of Abuja in line with its master plan. The Minister gave the assurance in Abuja, Nigeria's Capital during the courtesy visit of the Japanese Ambassador to Nigeria, Suzuki Hideo, alongside officials of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The minister specifically lauded Japan’s role in the development and review of the Abuja Master Plan, describing it as critical to the city’s long-term growth. “I want to sincerely commend you for having confidence in the government of Nigeria and in particular the Federal Capital Territory. “You have contributed to education, health, nutrition and other critical sectors that impact directly on our people. “You have been working closely with the FCDA on the Abuja Master Plan. That is very key for us. We will continue to cooperate with you to ensure that this is actualised,” Wike stated. The Minister also acknowledged Japan’s interventions in Nigeria’s education sector, including training programmes for teachers and support for quality learning infrastructure. According to him, "we have seen the support in education, including training of our teachers in Tokyo. This is very important to improving our education sector." Wike identified agriculture and urban development as priority areas for future collaboration, assuring the Japanese delegation of the FCT Administration’s readiness to provide an enabling environment for sustained partnership. He added that, "We will partner with you, particularly in agriculture and city development, to ensure that the Renewed Hope Agenda of Mr President becomes a reality". On his part, Ambassador Suzuki Hideo reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to Nigeria’s development, noting that Abuja remains central to the country’s progress as its political and administrative capital. “The development of Abuja is crucial for driving Nigeria’s progress. Japan and JICA have been implementing various projects in infrastructure, healthcare, and economic development,” he said. He disclosed that Japan is also advancing projects in waste management and industrial development, including a plastics value chain initiative in collaboration with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), with a pilot facility set for handover. The envoy further highlighted ongoing efforts to upgrade the Abuja Master Plan through JICA, aimed at improving residents’ quality of life and supporting sustainable urban growth. Also speaking, the Chief Representative of JICA Nigeria Office, Ishigame Keiji, outlined the agency’s wide-ranging interventions across water, power, health, agriculture, and education sectors in the FCT. He revealed that JICA is supporting the review of Abuja’s 1979 Master Plan to align with the city’s development needs up to 2050, focusing on infrastructure expansion, economic growth, and climate resilience. According to him, the agency is also ready to move into priority infrastructure development once the updated plan is completed, backed by its global experience in executing large-scale projects. Keiji recalled the longstanding diplomatic and development ties between Nigeria and Japan, with both sides expressing commitment to strengthening cooperation for sustainable growth in the Federal Capital Territory.

ADDRESS BY THE CHAIRMAN NATIONAL CARETAKER WORKING COMMITTEE (NCWC) OF THE PEOPLES DEMOCRATIC PARTY (PDP) AT THE 107TH NATIONAL EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE (NEC) MEETING HELD ON MONDAY, 23RD MARCH 2026 Distinguished leaders of our great Party, Members of the National Executive Committee, Esteemed elders and stakeholders, Gentlemen of the press, Ladies and gentlemen, It is with a deep sense of responsibility and gratitude that I welcome you all to this important meeting of the 107th National Executive Committee of our great Party, the Peoples Democratic Party. This NEC meeting comes at a defining moment in the life of our Party. In the past weeks, we have successfully conducted our State and Zonal Congresses across the country. I am pleased to note, with considerable satisfaction, that these exercises were largely peaceful, orderly, and reflective of the democratic ideals which our Party continues to uphold. On behalf of the National Working Committee, I commend all Party leaders, electoral officers, aspirants, and members who contributed to the success of these congresses. In this regard, I wish to commend the Chairman and members of the National Convention Planning Committee for the diligence, commitment, and strategic clarity they have brought to bear in organizing this all-important event. Your ability to drive the process with purpose and coordination is commendable, and I urge you to sustain this momentum to ensure a seamless and successful convention. We also salute the Chairman of the Convention Committee, His Excellency, Ambassador Okezie Ikpeazu, and indeed all our leaders across the country, for their steadfastness, cooperation, and unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of our Party. The level of collaboration we have witnessed in recent times is both encouraging and reassuring. Permit me, at this juncture, to pay special tribute to our respected National Leader, His Excellency Ezewo Nyesome Wike CON, whose doggedness, uncommon sacrifices, and courage have continued to inspire confidence and stability within our Party. The Minister of the Federal Capital TerritoryThe Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has said the judgment of the Court of Appeal affirming the nullification of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national convention held in Ibadan provides an opportunity for the party to rebuild and restore unity among its members. Wike, who spoke with journalists in Abuja on Monday, maintained that the ruling confirmed that the convention conducted by the PDP in November 2025 could not stand because the party failed to comply with statutory provisions guiding such exercises. According to him, the court’s decision reaffirmed the need for political parties to strictly adhere to the provisions of the 1999 Constitution, the Electoral Act 2022, as well as their internal rules and guidelines. “When you do not comply with what the law says, it cannot stand. It does not matter who is chairman or who is not chairman. What matters is compliance with the law,” Wike said. The minister explained that the court established that necessary procedures, including the conduct of valid congresses in some states and proper notice to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), were not followed before the convention was held. He added that once such legal requirements are ignored, the matter goes beyond internal party affairs and becomes an issue of compliance with the law. While reacting to the judgment, Wike described the development as a significant moment for the party, saying it reaffirmed the supremacy of due process and the rule of law. “Today is one of my happiest days because, as a party that claims to uphold democratic principles, we must not condone impunity. We must follow due process and allow the rule of law to prevail,” he said. Wike recalled that he had earlier warned that steps taken in violation of the law would eventually be set aside by the courts. “You cannot rely on money or power and assume that because you are a governor or a powerful figure you can do anything. I thank God that the law has spoken,” he added. The FCT minister urged members of the PDP to use the judgment as an opportunity to rebuild unity within the party rather than prolong internal disputes through legal battles. “For me, it is an opportunity for the party to come back together. We have fought enough. It is time to drop personal interests and see how we can move the party forward,” he said. Wike stressed the need for the PDP to remain strong as a credible opposition party in the country. “The PDP remains the only strong opposition party we have. What we should be doing now is to put our house in order so that the party can continue to play its role effectively,” he said. He further explained that with the court affirming the invalidity of the Ibadan convention, the leadership structure that emerged from the exercise could no longer be recognised. According to him, the party had already constituted a caretaker arrangement to manage its affairs pending the conduct of a valid national convention. He disclosed that the PDP leadership is working towards organising a fresh national convention scheduled for March 29 and 30, 2026, where new national officers would be elected in accordance with the law and the party’s constitution. Wike said the convention would be held at the Velodrome of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, adding that arrangements had already been concluded for the exercise. “We have already established the National Caretaker Committee. When the tenure of the National Working Committee expired, we said the law does not allow for a vacuum. The caretaker committee was recognised by the Federal High Court to run the party until new officers are elected,” he said. The Court of Appeal had earlier upheld the judgment of the Federal High Court restraining INEC from recognising the outcome of the PDP national convention held in Ibadan, ruling that the party failed to comply with legal requirements before conducting the exercise. |

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has said he will only support whoever supports President Bola Tinubu’s reelection, irrespective of political party in the FCT Area Councils’ election, scheduled for February 21. Wike stated this in Abuja on Saturday, during Senator Sandy Onor’s 60th birthday, a celebration of six decades of scholarship, leadership, service and meaningful impact. The Minister, who said he owed no one an apology for supporting Tinubu, promised to support any candidate that supports the President irrespective of party affiliation. “We have the FCT Area Council election coming up on February 21 and I have a duty to support any candidate that supports President Tinubu to win. “It is also my duty to ensure that any candidate that is not supporting Tinubu does not win in the election, and I owe no apology on my stand,” Wike said. Speaking on the celebrant, the Minister described him as a credible ally, a trustworthy friend and good brother. According to him, Onor is not just a friendly but a reliable friend, even in times of trouble and that is when you know who is a friend. “I will continue to be with you and work with you, because I know even if I am not alive today, you will not abandon my family,” Wike said. Reading the citation of the celebrant, Prof. Anthony Eyang said, Onor, born on February 14, 1966 in Ikom, Cross River State, was raised in an environment deeply rooted in community values, discipline and faith. Eyang said that the journey of Onor, a Professor of History began from the lecture halls of the University of Calabar to the floor of the Nigerian Senate, and onward to Cross River State politics. “This reflects a life devoted to learning, leadership, and the advancement of society,” he said. Earlier, Chairman planning committee, Senator Philip Aduda, said that the event was a thanksgiving of God's faithfulness on Onor’s life both as an academic and a politician. On his part, Mr Samuel Otom, former governor of Benue, described Onor as an “icon”, a great Nigerian, and a man who had prepared himself and fit for leadership. Otom, who stood in for the Chairman of the Occasion, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu, former governor of Abia State and Ambassador designate, equally described Onor as a “good man.” Former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Chief Kanu Agabi (SAN) described the celebrant as a courageous and intelligent man, saying; "I love Senator Sandy Onor because he is not one of those who stigmatize the constitution as a product of the military. He is a courageous and intelligent man." Prof. Dave Imbua, while presenting a Festchrift, a book written by scholars in honour of the celebrant, said Onor has remained a notable historian among academics. Ikpeazu unveiled the book on behalf of Wike and his friends, with N50 million. In his remarks, the celebrant said he had realised in his 60th year of life that it was good to be a man of excellence and a man of character, adding that hard work pays. Onor, however, said that “everything becomes insignificant if the finger of God is absent”. He thanked his family, friends and well-wishers for the show of love, adding that their support would be taken for granted. The Minister of the Nigerian Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike, has dismissed claims that ongoing judicial infrastructure projects in Abuja could compromise the independence of the judiciary. Wike spoke on Thursday after inspecting several judicial projects in the nation’s capital, Abuja. The projects inspected include the Court of Appeal complex Judges Quarters and heads of courts of Appeal. The projects which he said are presidential interventions to the third arm of government to ensure its independence is being executed by the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) through the supervision of Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA). Minister Wike insisted that the intervention is solely aimed at improving welfare, security and efficiency within the third arm of government. He added that, “There is nothing you would do that critics will not criticise. Before now, people complained that judges had nowhere to stay to do their work effectively. Now that government is providing accommodation, they say it is an attempt to buy them. How many people can you buy?. He stressed that no democracy can function without a strong and independent judiciary, noting that providing decent accommodation and a secure environment for judges does not in any way undermine their constitutional independence. “You can’t talk about democracy without talking about the judiciary. You also can’t expect them to perform efficiently when they don’t have befitting places to stay. Even when funds are released to the judiciary, it is still the executive that provides those funds,” Wike stated. The minister explained that the projects followed a clear directive by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu shortly after his inauguration in May 2023, mandating the Administration to reduce the accommodation burden on judges and improve their welfare. According to him, one of the key projects a Court of Appeal division with a separate administrative headquarters is already between 85 and 90 per cent completed. “We were there this morning and saw that the work is almost finished. That directive was very clear, and we are glad that it is being faithfully implemented,” he said. He disclosed that the FCT Administration is also constructing 40 residential houses for judges, 20 for the FCT High Court, 10 for the Court of Appeal and 10 for the Federal High Court with plans underway to commence similar housing for the National Industrial Court. Wike further revealed that official residences, referred to as “Houses of Courts,” are being built for heads of courts, including the President of the Court of Appeal, the President of the National Industrial Court, the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court and the Chief Judge of the FCT High Court. “We believe that by June or July, with the speed of work we are seeing, these projects will be handed over for Mr. President to formally present to the judiciary,” he said. The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has revealed that he has just signed January salaries of the FCT Administration workers amounting to over N12bn immediately after the Court ruling, suspending the strike embarked on by the workers. The Minister stated this while addressing journalists in his office after the court ruling. Wike insisted that the government has largely met workers’ legitimate demands despite the ongoing strike. He added that the strike had been hijacked by political interests, forcing the administration to seek legal intervention to prevent a breakdown of order. “I just signed January salaries amounting to over ₦12 billion,” the minister said. “Yet the FCT is entitled to only one per cent of federal revenue. If the Federal Government earns ₦1 trillion, the FCT gets about ₦10 billion. That allocation alone cannot even cover salaries, not to talk of running the administration.” He explained that the government initially chose dialogue and engagement when the strike began, noting that it did not rush to court. “When the strike started, we believed in dialogue. We felt the issues could be resolved through discussion. But when it became clear that politicians have hijacked the strike, we had no choice but to go to court and allow the law to decide,” Wike stated. The minister acknowledged workers’ rights in a democracy but insisted that strike action should always be a last resort. “This is a democracy. Everyone has the right to protest. But if workers made 14 demands and government addressed like 10, there should be room for understanding and patience,” he said. Drawing from his experience as a former governor and local government chairman, Wike said he understood labour struggles but warned against unrealistic demands. “When demands are legitimate, government should acknowledge them. But it is not always possible to implement everything at once. Government does not deny legitimate entitlements, especially wages,” he added. Wike also dismissed claims that he was chased out of office during the strike, describing such reports as false and politically motivated. “I was in my office, went to the airport to see Mr President, travelled to Turkey, and returned. These stories are deliberate misinformation,” he said. On revenue challenges, the minister disclosed that the administration has significantly improved Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), increasing it from about ₦9 billion when he assumed office to ₦30 billion. “When we take steps to improve IGR, people complain. But that progress is what sustains salaries, reforms, and development,” he said. He highlighted key reforms under the current administration, including the creation of the FCT Civil Service Commission, appointment of permanent secretaries, and establishment of the Office of the Head of Service. “Before now, workers retired at director level, but they can now rise to Permanent Secretary. This was made possible by the Government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. "You cannot expect government to spend all available revenue on wages alone while neglecting massive infrastructure development,” Wike noted. Following the court order suspending the strike, the minister issued a stern warning to workers. “Disobeying the law has consequences. From tomorrow, any worker who refuses to resume work will face disciplinary action. Anyone who attempts to block government facilities will face the full weight of the law,” he said. Wike rejected claims that dialogue had broken down, insisting that engagement with unions has always been ongoing with his approval. “No amount of blackmail or political games will intimidate this administration. We will obey the court, and everyone else must do the same,” he declared.

If there is one state that the President knows he can go home and sleep with his two eyes closed, it is Rivers State,” he said. Wike, who was addressing both supporters of the All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party during his “thank you” visit to Port Harcourt City Local Government Area of the state on Saturday, recalled how the people of Rivers State stood by him and elected Tinubu in 2023 against all odds. He added that now that the benefits were rolling in, he would not allow anyone to rush in the last minutes and take the glory. “In 2023, we led the struggle here. We were members of the Renewed Hope Agenda from the very beginning and that was when we took the decision to support Tinubu. “Now, those who were not there then, who went and supported Atiku Abubakar and failed to give him even 10 per cent votes are now coming that they want to lead the Renewed Hope Agenda. Earlier, Mayor of Port Harcourt, Sir Allwell Ihunda, commended Tinubu for ensuring democratically elected council chairmen exist in the state. Ihunda added that as governor of the state for eight years, Wike had done wonders by executing numerous life-impacting projects to make life better for the people. “We are ready for your directives on what to do in 2027. As soon as the directive comes, we will step into action,” he said. In the recorded conversation, the suspects allegedly discussed a plot to bring in Israeli nationals to carry out the assassination of the FCT Minister. The discussion reportedly ended with an alleged plan to approach Governor Fubara for funding to execute the operation. “The content of the call was considered a grave national security threat,” a senior security source said. “That was what triggered the immediate action by the IRT.” Following the intelligence report, operatives of the IRT, led by Commissioner of Police Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, moved in and arrested Dr. Gbeneol. He has reportedly been in detention for about two weeks. Security sources further disclosed that efforts are ongoing to arrest Danagogo, who is alleged to have gone underground since the matter came to light. The Nigeria Police, however confirmed the arrest of the suspect saying the individual is currently in custody while an investigation is ongoing. "He is in our custody. Investigation is ongoing," Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin said on Monday. Although the police declined to disclose further details about the suspect’s identity or the nature of the alleged offence, sources familiar with the matter said detectives are working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the case and possible accomplices.

The Rivers Ijaw People’s Congress has announced its decision to abandon Governor Siminilayi Fubara of Rivers State, and pledged allegiance to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike. Chairman of the congress, Senator George Sekibo, announced the group’s decision during Wike's “thank you” visit to Okrika Local Government Area of the state on Saturday. Sekibo described the feud between Fubara and Wike as “very unfortunate”, stressing however that the Ijaw people were not ungrateful people. He recalled how Wike supported the emergence of Fubara, an Ijaw son, as governor of Rivers State and was widely supported by the people across the state. “Please don't look at him and think we are all ungrateful people. Ijaw people are very grateful people. “That is why we abandoned him (Fubara) and said we will follow you. You have done so much for Ijaw people in Rivers. Whatever you say we should do, is what we will do,” he said. He accused the group of disregarding two valid Federal High Court judgments, only to seek refuge in a State High Court through an ex-parte order. “You went to a State High Court to sue INEC, asking that the convention must take place, and you got an ex-parte order to override judgments of the Federal High Court. How do you disobey two final judgments and still claim leadership?” Wike queried. Africa woke up again to the unsettling news of another military seizure of power, this time in Guinea-Bissau. The justification offered by the junta was a familiar one: a disputed election. That explanation, however, only scratches the surface of a wider crisis that continues to undermine stability across the continent. Elections in many African countries have become dangerously unpredictable events, not because citizens lack the will to choose their leaders, but because the institutions tasked with managing those choices are often compromised long before a single vote is cast. The reality, uncomfortable as it may be, is that election management bodies, security agencies, and even some election monitors and observers frequently become actors in the manipulation of results. These institutions, which should serve as the guardrails of democracy, instead tilt the playing field in favor of powerful political interests. When electoral processes are deliberately distorted and outcomes are engineered rather than earned, the inevitable result is public distrust. This distrust quickly escalates into protests, violence, destruction of property, and in some cases, the kind of national instability that creates a vacuum for military intervention. In moments when the political class pushes a nation to the brink, the Armed Forces become the last institution still capable of preventing total collapse. To stand idly by while politicians drive their countries toward crisis would itself be a dereliction of duty. The military, whether people appreciate it or not, remains the final guarantor of the state. When all civilian institutions fail, when violence spreads unchecked, and when politicians flee abroad with their families, it is the military that remains to restore order and prevent the complete disintegration of the nation. Sudan offers a sobering example. In a country where politicians created rival militias for factional advantage, the national army became the only barrier preventing irreversible national fragmentation once those militias turned their guns on the state. This reality does not glorify military rule. It simply exposes a painful truth: military coups in Africa are not the disease; they are symptoms of a deeper democratic malfunction. As long as the continent continues to operate democracies that are hollow in form and corrupted in practice, the cycle of coups will remain unbroken. The fundamentals of democracy must be strengthened if Africa is to move beyond the era of military intervention. Electoral bodies must be independent, credible, and shielded from political influence. Security agencies must act as protectors of voters, not tools of intimidation. Institutions must be stronger than individuals, with a judiciary capable of delivering justice that citizens can trust. Political systems must become inclusive enough to ensure that losing an election does not equate to political extinction. And above all, the rule of law must be upheld without fear or favor. Until these foundations are rebuilt, elections will continue to generate crises rather than resolve them, and the continent will remain vulnerable to military interventions that are triggered not by ambition, but by the collapse of democratic order. The uncomfortable conclusion, therefore, is that military takeovers—however undesirable—will continue to occur whenever political leaders undermine the very democratic structures they claim to defend. If Africa genuinely wants to end its cycle of coups, then it must first end the behaviors that provoke them. As long as elections remain compromised, institutions remain weak, and governance is treated as a private enterprise rather than a public trust, the military will continue to be called upon as the emergency brake preventing nations from spiraling into chaos. Africa does not need more coups; it needs democracy that works. But until democracy becomes real, military takeovers will remain, in the eyes of many citizens, the last resort when everything else has failed. Capt. Bishop C. Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barr. Nyesom Wike, has expressed dissatisfaction with the pace of work at the ongoing Judges quarter and Court of Appeal complex at Daki Biyu jabi Abuja, warning that the contractor is unlikely to meet the revised December completion deadline. Wike spoke on Wednesday during an inspection tour of the project, where he noted that although significant progress had been made, the finishing phase was dragging beyond acceptable timelines. “Initially, the contractors agreed to complete this project by September, but they wrote to request an extension to December due to some setbacks,” Wike said. “However, from what I have seen here today, I do not believe this project will be completed by December. It may even be difficult in January. That is not what we expected at all.” The Minister acknowledged that some sections visited showed satisfactory progress but insisted that the overall pace remained below the standard required for a project of such national importance. Speaking on the significance of the project to Nigeria’s justice system, Wike emphasised that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration is committed to strengthening the judiciary through improved welfare and infrastructure. “You cannot talk about confidence in the judiciary without talking about investment in infrastructure and judicial welfare,” the Minister said. “These are the things that give judicial officers the confidence to discharge their duties.” Wike added that creating a conducive environment for judges is essential for sustaining public trust in the justice system. “If you don’t have confidence in the judiciary, you cannot be sure of the future of our democracy. What we are doing here is creating the right environment for them to put in their best and maintain public trust in their work,” he stated. The inspection tour continues as the FCT Administration intensifies oversight to ensure timely delivery of major projects across the territory.
