The Senator representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Ireti Kingibe, has been told to stop being shameless, stop immoral acts and pay attention to the welfare of her legislative aides, many of whom have left as a result of non-payment of their salary and entitlements for as much as six months. Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, in a statement on Tuesday, said the FCT Minister will not be available to be used as a launchpad for Senator Ireti Kingibe's dying political career. Ireti Kingibe had said on a television program that the FCT Minister was out of touch with the needs of the people and that "it’s not just about development, Wike's conduct is fuelling resentment among the FCT people." In his reaction, the FCT Minister's Spokesperson said it was funny that Senator Ireti Kingibe, who treats her personal aides like slaves and has refused to pay them their wages is the one talking about someone treating others with disregard. Olayinka said; "As at today, we know how many of Senator Ireti Kingibe's aides that have resigned owing to non-payment of their salary and immoral acts. "We know one of her aides, who resigned because she allegedly had an immoral relationship with her boyfriend. We also know what strained her relationship with her third husband, Ambassador Gana Kingibe, a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF). But we will keep our gunpowder dry for now. "However, Senator Ireti Kingibe should tell the people of FCT what she did with the an 'envelop of N3 billion' that was awarded her last year and how many contracts for constituency projects she has sold for between 15 and 20 percent of the contract value. "As for the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, he will not be distracted by someone like Senator Ireti Kingibe, who has no other credible identity to present herself with, except the name of someone he is no longer married to. "The Minister will continue to bring infrastructural developments to both the FCT city center and satellite towns. Just last week Friday, commissioning of 16 projects to commemorate the second year of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration was concluded, and by this time next year, more projects would have been commissioned." The immediate past Imo State governor, His Excellency, The Rt Hon Emeka Ihedioha, CON, KSC, has informed his teeming supporters and followers that he had moved to the African Democratic Congress, ADC. Addressing the leaders of his grasstoots - based Rebuild Imo Movement (RIM) structure at his Civil Centre residence today, the former deputy speaker of the House of Representatives, said, "My party, your party, our party is now ADC. That is the way to go. That is the party for all of us". He urged the RIM leaders to go to their chapters, wards, local areas and zones to build ADC as a trully grasstoots and people based political party. According to him, "I urge you, as leaders of our Rebuild Imo Movement (RIM), to go home to your respective chapters, wards, LGAs and zones, and take this gospel to the grasstoots, to the people. We are people oriented. Our strength is the people, the masses. We alreday have representation in all the boots in the 305 wards in the state, and our structure across the 27 LGAs and three geo political zones are strong, viable and functional. Just go home and invigorate our RIM structure which is highly effective and superb". Ihedioha, who earned the Omenkeahuruanya title in view of his hallmark and lauduable achievements during his soujourn in the House of Representatives, thanked the leaders as well as the followers for their support and patience while they waited for a new political platform. "I must thank all of you here and those who are not here, for your steadfastness, support and patience. I commend the DG (director general) of our RIM structure for his administrative ingenuity. I appreciate all the state executive members of our structure, the zonal, LGA and ward leaders. You all have been wonderful. The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Federal Capital Territory (FCT), will any moment from now, call off the three-month primary school teachers’ strike, following the intervention of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike. Chief of Staff to the minister, Mr Chidi Amadi disclosed this in Abuja on Tuesday, after a closed-door meeting with the Area Council Chairmen, leadership of the NUT, and representatives of the FCT Administration. Other participants at the meeting, he said, included representatives of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANs) and the National Assembly. Amadi explained that the meeting was convened by the minister, in addition to previous interventions to find a lasting solution to the prolonged teachers’ strike. According to him, after extensive deliberation, a decision was reached to put the issues to rest. He announced that part of the resolution was to withhold the 10 per cent accrued Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) of the area councils for the past six months. He explained that the funds would be used to settle 70 per cent of the minimum wage owed the teachers. “Although it will not cover 100 per cent of the debt for now, it will cover about 70 per cent. This is a laudable move towards addressing the fracas once and for all. The chief of staff added that the minister had also directed that a Special Committee be constituted, composed of three members of NUT, two members from FCTA, one of the area council chairmen and representative of NANs. He added that the committee would revisit all the other outstanding issues and within the next two weeks, submit a report detailing how the other outstanding issues would be permanently addressed. “In addition to addressing the issues of the primary school teachers, Wike had taken a decision to address all outstanding issues of the local government employees. “The minister pledged to personally intervene to ensure that their demands are addressed by the FCTA. “This is to ensure that the area councils resume full operations effectively immediately. Speaking on behalf of the area council chairmen, Mr Abubakar Abdullahi, acknowledged the resolution, saying “although it was not in favour of the area councils, it was necessary to resolve the issues. “Six months of our IGR had been held to settle this issue. Ours at this point is to appeal to NUT to consider our children and call off the strike. “Please NUT, we are calling on you to respect the fact that the minister has taken his time to resolve this matter. “Wike had clearly stated that by law, he has no right to take the 10 per cent IGR of the area councils to clear the outstanding debt of the teachers. “However, the chairmen have all agreed because they also, collectively, want an end to the strike and so we have agreed that the 10 per cent IGR should go to the teachers”. He expressed optimism that the strike would be called off before Friday, so that children would go back to school. Also, the National President of NANs, Olushola Oladoja, lauded the resolutions and expressed hope that the outcome would finally put the matter to rest and the teachers return to class. Oladoja commended the minister for taking the bold step, stressing that any of the council chairmen could take him to court over such a decision. “However, I believe because the council chairmen also want the issue resolved, they have no option but to concede the IGR for six months,” he said. On his part, the NUT Chairman, Mohammed Shafa, acknowledged the deliberation, but said he would get back to the NUT State Executive Council, where the final decision would be taken. The news Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the teachers had embarked on the strike in March over non-implementation of minimum wage Other issues included non-implementation and payment of 25 per cent and 35 per cent salary increase, and non-implementation and payment of 40 per cent peculiar allowance. The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, says the Bola Tinubu International Conference Centre generated N650 million three weeks after inauguration. The centre was renovated by Wike-led FCT administration at N39 billion. Speaking at a media parley in Abuja on Thursday, July 3, 2025, the minister said before the renovation of the conference centre, the FCT received a revenue of N50 million annually. He stated: “Let me tell you how this country works. The man they gave the conference centre to was paying N50 million to the FCT every year. “That place was commissioned on June 10, and the revenue made within three weeks was N650 million. Why? People love good things. “The president hosted the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) heads of state in that international conference centre. Go and see the comments from ambassadors. People are rushing that place now. “In fact, there’s no space. As I speak, it has been booked up to 2027.”

The Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Minister, Nyesom Wike, has chided alleged political detractors for jumping from one political party to another since 1999. Wike while speaking during the commissioning of Ushafa/War College Road in Bwari Area Council of the FCT on Wednesday said "let those who have eyes see" what the FCT administration under his leadership and president Bola Ahmed Tinubu are doing to transform the FCT.. According to the minister, the achievements of the current government remains unprecedented and it's only those with eyes that can see the effort and results of the current government. According to him, " Let people hear. Let those who don't have vision, let those who are politically expired, let those, since 1999 have belonged to over 10 political parties, see what we are doing. "I thank God that today makes it the 5th day that the president had commissioned and thank God that wherever they are and whichever channels they want to watch, they will see Mr President commissioning projects everyday. Today is the 15th day of the entire project commissioning. Friday will make it the 16th day. The FCT Minister said he had never supervised any project the way he supervised the Ushafa/War College Road, commending the contractor for a good job. President Bola Tinubu who was represented by the Vice President Kashim Shettima commended Wike for transforming Abuja satellite towns, stating that the projects have opened the satellite towns to more economic opportunities. According to Shettima, "we are not just building roads, we are building capacity. We are creating jobs." Shettima who said the FCT Minister was dancing and performing urged others in places of authorities to take a cue from the FCT story by building a Nigerian that everyone is connected to. The commissioning was attended by three of the former G-5 governors - Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State, Samuel Ortom of Benue State and Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State.

President Bola Tinubu says the leadership quality of the Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, is taking governance closer to the residents of the territory. Tinubu stated this in Abuja on Monday while inaugurating the newly-constructed access roads in Giri district, executed by the Wike-led FCT Administration. The project was the13th so far inaugurated, out of the 17 outlined for inauguration to celebrate Tinubu’s second year in office. Represented by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, the president said that Wike’s work speaks for itself in every corner of the FCT. “From the vast-spaced districts of Maitama, Jahi, Katampe, Wuye, Mabushi and the likes, to the towns of Gwagwalada, Kwali, Bwari and Abaji, and the growing communities of Kabusa, Ketti and now Giri district, your leadership has brought progress closer to the people. “You have not only embraced the visions of my administration’s “Renewed Hope Agenda”, you have localised it, made it meaningful and made it real. “Your actions have brought quality and excellence to the dual states of communities long laid in the shadows. “Honourable minister, on behalf of myself, my administration and the good people of the FCT, I say thank you for reminding us that good governance is not about fanfare, but about footsteps,” he said. Tinubu said that the newly-constructed access roads were not just infrastructural achievements, but a statement of intention to open up Giri district and the FCT. To the residents of Giri, Tinubu said: “May these roads lead you to greater opportunities; may they carry your children to school, farmers to markets, families to healthcare and dreams to reality.” In his remarks, Wike said that the district houses University of Abuja, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Academy and other institutions. He said that EFCC would be the first beneficiary of the access road, as it would encourage it to commence construction of its academy. “Most of the problem we’re having here is that sometimes, when you allocate land, there are no facilities, no infrastructure, and people are not encouraged to develop the allocated land. “So, we will do everything we can to see that basic infrastructure is provided in Giri to become an important district that will attract so many investors,” he said. The minister further stated that efforts had begun to construct the critical road network in the district. He said that he had already asked the acting Executive Secretary of Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), Mr Richard Dauda, and other experts to begin working on the details. Wike added that the road network would help to stop land grabbing by University of Abuja, adding that the university had grabbed 11,000 hectares without authorisation. “So, I have told the director of lands and other relevant agencies to carve out 4,000 hectares and give it to the university. “The other ones would be reallocated because we are going to provide the roads here, and that is the true situation,” he said. On her part, the FCT Minister of State, Dr Mariya Mahmoud, described the project as yet another shining example of the Tinubu-led administration’s commitment to infrastructure development, connectivity and inclusive growth. According to Mahmoud, the Giri road is part of a broader initiative to open up under-served communities and stimulate economic activities within the area councils. Earlier, Dauda said that the project was awarded in November 2024 to provide access roads to the district, planned to be an institutional area. He stated that the proposed main sewage treatment plant for the city at Giri was also located within the district.

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Planet Project Ltd, Mr Biodun Otunola, says the Kugbo and Mabushi Bus and Taxi Terminals are designed with the capacity to process more than 10,000 passengers each, daily. Otunola disclosed this in Abuja on Thursday, on the sideline of the inauguration of the Kugbo Bus and Taxi Terminal by President Bola Tinubu to celebrate his second year in office. He added that the terminals were also designed to accommodate 120 buses and taxis each daily for both inter-city and intra-city travels. He, however, said that the one under construction in the Central Business District (CBD)was different, adding that it was essentially designed for intra-city operations. “We can take over 120 buses here and we've designed this place such that it can handle up to 10,000 passengers every day. “It's the same thing with the one in Mabushi as well. The same concept but the one at CBD, which is the third one, is a bit different. “The one at CBD is essentially for the city operation within Abuja, while Mabushi and Kugbo are designed to run intracity and intercity operations,” he said. On job opportunities, Otunola said that each of the three terminals would employ at least 100 persons. He explained that people would be in the security department, some in the ticketing department, others in facility management, control room, electrical department, mechanical department, maintenance department, and bus control. “It's very huge. It's like running a mini airport,” he said. The MD pointed out that Abuja before now has always been about car and road transportation, noting that for the first time, the government had invested in public transport to ensure comfort and security. He described the facility as a “transportation hub for the masses”, built in tandem with similar facilities found anywhere in the world. “So, if you come here and you are travelling to any part of Nigeria, including within Abuja as well, you will have the lift, the escalator, and you will have security. “This place provides you with safety, comfort and convenience for you to travel, and you can also shop while you are travelling. This is what we have all over the world. “We have all the modern facilities - fully air-conditioned, you have a loading bay area for passengers, you can eat here, you can have public convenience and cinema. “We also have escalators, we have lifts and we have a ticketing area. So, the area of stressing yourself because you are traveling is over. “Now you can travel with convenience, you can travel with ease, with safety and peace of mind and that's exactly what we have here,” he said. He added that with this development, people would be able to travel with confidence and without any fear, in a very safe, secure and serene environment. He commended Tinubu and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike for giving Planet Project, a local contractor the opportunity to showcase its capacity to execute world standard bust terminals for the residents of the territory. “I feel very very happy and elated that indeed the Nigerian government is beginning to trust its own people to do the right thing and to execute this kind of project. “Although this is not the first, we have executed, but to have pioneered this in the FCT is no doubt a very, very major achievement for us. “We are grateful to President Tinubu for giving us this opportunity and also the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike because if they don't believe in us, they will not try us and they wouldn’t have achieved this result,” he said. Otunola commended Wike for the decision to handover the facilities to the private sector to manage to ensure efficiency and quality service delivery. He, however, said that based on needs assessment, the FCT would need at least 12 bus and taxi terminals to cover significant parts of the territory. “We will need one in Gwagwalada, one in Kuje in Gwarinpa, Lugbe including the city centre in places like Area 1, Area 3 in Garki, Wuse and other strategic locations,” he said. Earlier, Tinubu, who was represented by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, said that the terminals would equally boost trade, bring orderliness, safety and comfort to commuters. In his remarks, Wike thanked Tinubu for supporting the ongoing transformation in the FCT, including public transportation through the construction of bus and taxi terminals. He said that with the bus terminals, residents do not need to be waiting on the road side for vehicles, exposing them to once chance criminal operators.

Wike to upgrade IBB Golf Club to international standard By Philip Yatai The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike, says the IBB International Golf and Country Club will be renovated and upgraded to international standard. Wike disclosed this when he visited the club in Abuja on Saturday, to assess the facilities. He said that the renovation would begin with the Club House, where golfers wine, dine and unwind stress, under emergency intervention. The minister added that the other sections of the club would be renovated and upgraded in phases. He said that the renovation would be handled by Julius Berger construction company, which built the facilities in 1991. He said that the club would remained closed until the renovation was concluded, in order to prevent it from degenerating. “It is better we put the place in order quickly, so that when people come in, they will have where they can relax, have their drinks and rest. According to him, making the club a tourist centre will attract investments. “However, I want to advise the Board of Trustees (BOT) to initiate some innovative ideas for revenue generation to maintain the club instead of depending wholly on the government,” he said. The minister explained that the BoT and the Interim Management Committee (IMC) were constituted to manage the club as government property. He said that the step became necessary because government is not a good manager of facilities. He urged the BoT and the IMC members to work as a team towards uplifting the standard of the club to international standard. “That’s why we will not allow anybody to take what belongs to us. We will not allow that. “Any move to sabotage what we are doing will not be tolerated,” he said. Earlier, the BoT Chairperson, Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem, appealed to Wike to renovate the club and upgrade its standard to be at par with the rehabilitated Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre. Dongban-Mensem, who is the President of the Court of Appeal, recalled that the club was built by the Federal Government and opened to the public in 1991. She added that the club, which began with 29 members, has, at the moment, 5,000 members using same facilities. She pointed out that the facilities at the club has worn-out due to excessive use over the years. According to her, if upgraded, the facility will become a tourist attraction site and in the long run, boost the economy of the country.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike, has promised to provide critical infrastructure in Wassa District to facilitate the relocation of Apo Mechanics traders and dealers. Wike disclosed this in Abuja on Friday, while inaugurating a committee to facilitate the relocation of the traders and dealers to their permanent site in Wassa District. The minister, who would chair the committee, has the Coordinator of Abuja Metropolitan Management Council, Director of Development Control, Director of Land, Director of Urban and Regional Planning as members. Other members are the Director of Survey and Director of Resettlement and Compensation. Wike noted that several administrations had promised to evacuate the traders and dealers occupying a section of the Outer Southern Expressway corridor to their permanent site in Wassa but failed. He added that the President Bola Tinubu administration had promised to relocate the traders and dealers, adding that the administration had begun processes to fulfil the promise. “It’s been promise on promise since 2011 without fulfilment, but Tinubu has promised, and the process has begun. “As part of the process, on June 27, together with the leaders of Apo Mechanics, we will all visit Wassa, to see the permanent site for the relocation. “This will enable us to decide on the needed critical infrastructure to be put in place to facilitate your relocation. “This collective effort is to ensure that Tinubu’s promise is fulfilled,” he said. The minister advised the traders and the dealers against fighting among themselves, stressing that they would achieve more if they work together. He pointed out that one of the businesses of the government was to make people happy, adding that the FCT Administration would do everything possible to make the Apo traders and dealers happy.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike, says big men (rich people) residing in Abuja remain FCT’s biggest problem in voluntary tax compliance for development. Wike stated this during the inauguration of the newly constructed Collector Road CN2 (Zakari A. Kyari Street), in Abuja on Thursday, by President Bola Tinubu to celebrate his second year in office. The road, from Arterial Road N11 (Ahmadu Bello Way) in Mabushi to Judges Quarters in Katampe District, and other roads were constructed by the FCT Administration. The minister said that the big men living in the FCT do not like paying taxes. He, however, expressed dismay that the same big men pay their taxes and ground rent voluntarily in London, the United States of America and other foreign countries. He said that the CN2 road and other connecting roads in Katampe District were executed with taxes and ground rents paid by responsible residents. “For those who said we sealed their houses for not paying a ground rent, see the value; see the product of paying a ground rent. “If you don’t pay, nobody will provide this infrastructure because the only thing the city has is just to collect taxes. “People say Abuja is rich. How rich is it?” he asked. He explained that what Abuja collects from the Federation Account was one per cent of what was due to the Federal Government every month. “So, assuming that the federal government gets N800 billion every month. One percent of N800 billion is N8 billion Naira and N8 billion is not enough to pay salaries. “Our salary today is not less than N13 billion because of the minimum wage increase. “So, if we only depend on one per cent of what the federal government gets every month, it means that we can only pay salaries, not to talk about carrying out infrastructure. “That’s why we’re very aggressive in saying you cannot enjoy infrastructure free of charge. You have to pay. “It has nothing to do with ‘I belong to party A; I belong to party B, I belong to party C’,” he said. He urged Tinubu, who was represented by the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr Mr Benjamin Kalu, to talk to FCT residents on the need to pay their taxes. This, he said, would enable the FCT Administration to deliver more infrastructure in the territory for the good of all. He reminded FCT residents, particularly big men, that whoever has land in the territory and has not paid ground rent should pay or their names would be published as defaulters in newspapers. He particularly pointed out that no poor man has the financial resources to build a house in Katampe and Mabushi, adding that those building houses in the areas were rich men. “Mr Deputy Speaker, see what we are talking about. If you know you have land here and you have not paid, I will publish your name that you have not paid. “It has nothing to do that I want to embarrass you, no. We need money to do the work that we are doing. “No poor man can do these houses. No poor man. These houses are being built by rich men. So, you have to pay so we can carry out the job of delivering critical infrastructure. “We need people to pay their taxes so that we will carry out development in the interest of our people,” he added. Earlier, Mr Richard Dauda, acting Executive Secretary, Federal Capital Development Authority, said that the project was executed by CGC and was flagged off in October, 2024. Dauda said that the CN2 road was a dual carriageway of two lanes each while the other roads were single carriageway. He added that road projects were executed to provide infrastructure and open up the Katampe District for development.

The University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) has conferred an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science (DSc Honoris Causa) on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike. The Vice-Chancellor of university, Prof. Owunari Georgewill, disclosed during the presentation of the conferment letter to Wike, at his residence in Abuja on Wednesday. Georgewill added that the official decoration and presentation of the certificate would be on July 26, as part of activities to celebrate the university’s 50th anniversary. He explained that the Act of the university empowered it to award honorary doctorate degrees to distinguished Nigerians who have contributed immensely to the growth of the nation. PDP EMINENT STAKEHOLDERS AND CONCERNED LEADERS MEETING. COMMUNIQUE OF 9TH JUNE, 2025 1. At a meeting of the aforementioned group on the 9th day of June, 2025, in Abuja, the state of affairs of the party; the need to reinforce internal democracy, equity and justice within the ranks of the Party were discussed and carefully reviewed. The Eminent Stakeholders and Concerned Leaders drawn from the various States of the Federation, took a deep and strong view of the situation in our party and came to following conclusions: (i) The seemingly untractable crisis in the party is as a result of inexplicable refusal of a few to adhere to the Party’s Constitution, with particular reference to Section 36(1)(a)(b) and (c), Sections 47(3)(5) and 48(1)(i) and the definite Supreme Court Judgment regarding the position of the office of the National Secretary of the Party. (ii) The Eminent Stakeholders and Concerned Leaders are alarmed that the Party is in inevitable part to self-annihilation, if urgent steps are not taken to rein in the desperate, divisive and selfish tendencies that brought the party to its knees in the lead up to the 2023 elections. (iii) These divisive tendencies, unfortunately, have found expression in the conduct of certain interest within the ranks of our party both at NEC, NWC and Board of Trustees levels. 2. Consequently, the PDP Eminent Stakeholders and Concerned Leaders resolve as follows: (i) That to finally arrest the inexorable drift towards extinction in our party, the party must, without further delay, respect the judgement of the Supreme Court. We therefore, unequivocally reaffirm Senator Sam Anyanwu as the duly elected and substantive National Secretary of our great party. (ii) In the spirit of fairness, including, federal character principles and respect fof our Party Constitution, the party must make an unequivocal pronouncement Zoning its Presidential Candidate to the South in the 2027 elections after the unbroken years of Northern Presidency under President Muhammadu Buhari. (iii) In line with the provisions of our party Constitution, only the National Secretary, Senator Sam Anyanwu, can issue notices of meeting of the National Convention, National Executive Committee, National Caucus and the National Working Committee, and to this end, all notices not issued by him and actions founded on them, including correspondences to INEC are null and void, and of no effect whatsoever. (iv) Furthermore, it is clear from the Constitution that only the National Convention, properly and duly constituted can remove Senator Sam Anyanwu, the National Secretary, arising from his status as a member of the National Executive Committee of the party. (v) We, therefore, demand that the Acting National Chairman and the National Secretary jointly issue a notice to INEC with an attached agenda for the National Executive Committee meeting of the Party being the only pathway to abide by extant laws. 3. The Senate has approved N1.8trillion for the 2025 Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) Statutory Appropriation Bill. This followed the presentation of the report of Committees on FCT on the bill by Chairman of the Committee Sen. Bomai Ibrahim (APC-Yobe) at plenary on Wednesday. Ibrahim, in his report, said the Senate and the House Committee on FCT met with the minister and other relevant officials of the FCT administration to deliberate on the appropriation bill. He said the breakdown of the budget includes personnel cost of N106 billion, overhead of N352 billion, total recurrent was proposed for N502 billion while capital expenditure proposed was N1.3trillion. He said the total personal cost constitutes 8.29 per cent of the budget while the total recurrent of the budget constitute 27.69 per cent while the total capital was 72.31 per cent. He said out of the 72.31 per cent, 85 per cent of the capital was dedicated to ongoing projects, adding that only 50 per cent of the capital was for new projects. According to him, the best practice for budget framework was usually 70 per cent for capital and 30 per cent for recurrent. He, however, said it was commendable that FCT budget has 72.32 per cent for capital and 27.69 overhead. “This shows that the structure of the budget is in conformity with the best practice,” he said. Contributing, Sen. Barau Jibrin (APC-Kano) said the leadership of FCTA has done well in the administration of the FCT. He said Senate should support the laudable efforts of the FCT minister and his team to improve infrastructure development by approving the budget. Today, May 26, 2025, we commenced enforcement on the 4,794 properties revoked for non-payment of Ground Rent, from 10 to 43 years. Properties owned by government institutions, corporate organisations and individuals were affected. This demonstrates the Federal Capital Territory Administration’s commitment to carrying out its functions without fear or favour. However, the President, His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, has intervened. Therefore, by Mr. President’s intervention, holders of the affected properties now have 14 days (TWO WEEKS) to settle the outstanding Ground Rents, with associated penalties. For properties in the Central Area, the sum of N5 million will be paid by the defaulters as penalty, in addition to the Ground Rent owed. Those in Maitama, Asokoro, Wuse II, and Guzape Districts will pay the sum of N3 million as penalty, in addition to the Ground Rent owed. Defaulters in Wuse I, Garki I and Garki II will pay N2 million as penalty in addition to the Ground Rent owed. Also, all those who purchased properties from other people, but are yet to register their interests by obtaining the mandatory Minister’s Consent and registering their Deeds of Assignment now have 14 days (TWO WEEKS) to do so at the FCT Department of Land Administration. Furthermore, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barrister Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, CON, has granted a 14 days (TWO WEEKS) grace period to all property holders in the FCT to pay up their Right of Occupancy (R-of-O)/Certificate of Occupancy (C-of-O) bills, or risk revocation of those titles. Abuja, May 26, 2025 — In a sweeping enforcement operation, the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has sealed several high-profile properties across Abuja for failing to pay ground rent, some of which have defaulted for decades. Among the affected properties is the Total Petrol Station in Zones 3 and 5, both of which have been sealed and revoked due to non-payment of statutory ground rent. This action is part of a broader effort by the FCTA to recover billions of naira in outstanding debts owed by property owners in the capital city. Also sealed is the Access Bank branch located within Wuse Market, which is reportedly owing 34 years' worth of ground rent. The FCTA enforcement team took action earlier today, shutting down operations at the busy commercial site. In another major development, the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) office in Zone 5 was sealed for defaulting on 25 years of ground rent. This comes as a shock, given the agency’s role in revenue generation and tax compliance nationwide. The crackdown did not spare the hospitality and political sectors. Ibro Hotel, a long-standing establishment in Zone 5, was sealed for owing ground rent for 26 years. Likewise, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) National Secretariat, also in Zone 5, was shut down. FCTA officials disclosed that the property, owned by Senator Samaila Mamman Kurfi, has not paid ground rent in the past 28 years. These actions signal a renewed commitment by the FCTA to enforce urban development regulations and ensure that all property owners fulfill their financial obligations. According to FCTA officials, this exercise will continue in phases until full compliance is achieved. The administration has urged property owners and institutions to verify their ground rent status and settle all outstanding debts promptly to avoid similar enforcement measures.

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) will, from Monday, next week begin to take possession of the 4,794 properties revoked over non-payment of Ground Rent, for between 10 and 43 years. This was made known during a press briefing on Friday, by the FCT Minister’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, Director of Land Administration, Chijioke Nwankwoeze and Director Department of Development Control, Mukhtar Galadima. They said; “ownership of the revoked 4,794 properties in the Central Area, Garki I and II, Wuse I and II, Asokoro, Maitama and Guzape districts, had already reverted to the FCTA, and as from Monday, next week, the government will begin to exercise its rights of ownership on the affected landed properties. “As usual, this will be done without consideration as to ownership of the affected landed properties. It will be purely in line with extant laws and regulations guiding the process.” The Director of Development Control, explained that affected properties will be sealed up and access to them restricted as from Monday. He said the FCTA will decide what to do with the affected properties in due course. On the claim that some people went to court, the Director of Lands stated that there was no court decision on the revocation, and as such, the FCTA is not restricted in the discharge of its lawful functions on the affected properties. Chijioke Nwankwoeze also disclosed that the FCTA was already compiling records of compliance and non-compliance of title holders that were in default of payment of Ground Rent for between one and ten years, who were given a grace of 21 Days to pay up. He said the government will act accordingly as soon as the records are fully complied and analyzed. The address; “Recall that on March 18, 2025, we informed you of the revocation of 4,794 land titles in the Central Area, Garki I and II, Wuse I and II, Asokoro, Maitama and Guzape districts. These 4,794 properties were among the total of 8,375 land titles on which Ground Rent was not paid from one year to 43 years. We did say then that consequent upon the revocation of these titles, ownership of the affected properties have reverted to the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA). As from Monday, May 26, 2025, the FCTA will begin to take possession of the affected properties, using relevant agencies of government. As usual, this will be done without consideration as to ownership of the affected properties. It will be purely in line with extant laws and regulations guiding the process. Recall too that a grace of 21 Days was given to title holders that were in default of payment of Ground Rent for between one and ten years, to pay up or have their land tittles revoked. Relevant agencies of the FCTA are already compiling records of compliance and non-compliance with this directive, with a view to acting accordingly. It is important to state that payment of Ground Rent on landed properties in the FCT is founded on extant legislation. It is clearly stipulated in the terms and conditions of grant of Right of Occupancy, and it is due for payment on the first day of January, each year, without demand. In March, this year, list of land titles in default of payment of Ground Rent was compiled in the ten oldest districts of Phase 1 of the Federal Capital City (FCC), namely; Central Area District (Cadastral Zone A00), Garki I (Cadastral Zone A01), Wuse I (Cadastral Zone A02), Garki II (Cadastral Zone A03), Asokoro (Cadastral Zone A04), Maitama (Cadastral Zone A05), Maitama (Cadastral Zone A06), Wuse II (Cadastral Zone A07), Wuse II (Cadastral Zone A08) and Guzape (Cadastral Zone A09). In the listed districts, a total of 4,794 land titles were in default of Ground rent payment for 10 years and above. As at then, a total of N6,967,980,119 was being owed as Ground Rent by 8,375 property owners. This contravenes the terms and conditions of grant of the Rights of Occupancy, in line with the provisions of Section 28, Subsections 5(a) and (b) of the Land Use Act. Consequently, the titles of the properties in default were revoked in March 2025. Therefore, from Monday, May 26, 2025, the FCTA will begin to exercise its lawful rights of taking possession of these revoked properties. |

Tinubu Regime’s Shameful Legacy: Fueling Bigotry in Nigeria’s Fractured History By Oke Umurhohwo Since Bola Tinubu took office on May 29, 2023, Nigeria has spiraled into a cesspool of bigotry, be it ethnic, religious or regional hatred that very much now threatens to unravel the nation’s fragile unity. This regimes’s policies, silence and blatant favoritism have deepened divisions and also betrayed Nigeria’s long struggle to overcome its historical fault lines. From election violence to nepotistic appointments, Tinubu’s regime has emboldened prejudice, making bigotry a defining feature of his tenure. Nigeria’s history is scarred by division. The 1914 amalgamation forcibly merged diverse ethnic groups, sowing seeds of mistrust that persist today. The 1966 coups, fueled by ethnic rivalries, led to the pogroms against Igbos in the North, culminating in the Biafran War (1967–1970), which killed millions. Post-war policies like the “no victor, no vanquished” mantra aimed to heal wounds, but marginalization of Igbos persisted, evident in limited federal appointments and infrastructure neglect in the Southeast. Religious tensions also simmered, with riots like the 1987 Kafanchan crisis pitting Muslims against Christians. The Fourth Republic (1999–present) saw progress, with power-sharing norms like Christian-Muslim ticket balancing, but flare-ups such as the 2011 post-election violence killing over 800 people showed bigotry’s resilience. Under previous administrations, bigotry was often managed, if imperfectly. Obasanjo’s government (1999–2007) pushed national conferences to address ethnic grievances, while Jonathan’s tenure (2010–2015) faced criticism for favoring South-South interests but avoided overt tribalism. Buhari’s regime (2015–2023) was accused of Northern favoritism, yet it maintained religious ticket balance. Tinubu’s presidency, however, marks a reckless departure, amplifying divisions through actions that echo the worst of Nigeria’s past while introducing new wounds. Tinubu’s regime has not just failed to curb bigotry, it has actively fueled it. The 2023 elections were a low point, reminiscent of the ethnic purges of the 1960s. In Lagos, Igbo voters faced violent intimidation, with thugs allegedly tied to Tinubu’s political machine attacking polling units and shouting slurs like “go back to Onitsha.” Videos on various social media platforms showed voters fleeing for safety, evoking memories of pre-Biafra pogroms. Tinubu’s silence as a candidate and later president signaled tacit approval, undermining democratic trust and reviving Igbo marginalization fears. This wasn’t just electoral malpractice; it was a tribal assault on Nigeria’s pluralism. Tinubu’s Muslim-Muslim ticket with Kashim Shettima shattered Nigeria’s unwritten rule of religious balance, a norm upheld since 1999 to manage Christian-Muslim tensions. Historically, such balance prevented crises like the 1980s Sharia riots. By prioritizing political expediency, Tinubu alienated Christians, who make up nearly half the population, fueling fears of religious domination. His flippant defense of “competence over faith” ignored the symbolic weight of representation, deepening distrust in a way not seen since the 1993 Abiola annulment crisis, which sparked religious unrest. Furthermore, Tinubu’s appointments are a masterclass in ethnic favoritism, rivaling the Northern hegemony under Buhari. Key roles in finance, economy, security and aviation overwhelmingly favour Yoruba allies. Under this regime, it appears and feels like bigotry is baked into state policy. The Southeast, historically shortchanged since Biafra, is again sidelined, with none of their person represented in top security posts as of 2025. This mirrors the post-civil war era, where Igbos were excluded from power, fostering resentment. Tinubu’s nepotism isn’t just unfair, it’s a recipe for regional rebellion. Tinubu’s economic reforms, like fuel subsidy removal, have hit harder in poorer regions like the Northeast and Southeast, where infrastructure is weakest. This reflects “anti-Igbo and anti-North bias,” as Lagos-centric policies flourish while other zones languish. Historically, regional economic disparities fueled the 1966 coups. By prioritizing urban Southwest interests, Tinubu risks alienating entire regions, breeding resentment that could ignite violence. The regime’s crackdown on journalists, with 12 detained in 2024 for “inciting unrest,” mirrors the censorship of the 1980s military era. Outlets critical of Tinubu, especially those owned by non-Yoruba, face harassment. This selective targeting fuels narratives of ethnic bias. Tinubu’s media war is a Yoruba power grab. Suppressing free speech while allowing pro-government propaganda deepens polarization, undermining the press as a unifying force. Tinubu’s claim of being “no bigot” is laughable when his actions scream otherwise. Tinubu’s presidency doesn’t just echo historical failures, it amplifies them. Unlike past leaders who at least paid lip service to unity, Tinubu’s regime seems to thrive on division. His nepotism surpasses Buhari’s, his religious insensitivity outstrips military era decrees, and his inaction on violence rivals the chaos of the Second Republic’s collapse. Economically, his policies widen gaps that historically fueled unrest, while his repression of dissent revives authoritarian ghosts. The social media outcry a warning of a nation on the brink, as seen in the prelude to Biafra. The implications are dire. Ethnic distrust undermines institutions. Religious tensions threaten to revive sectarian violence, while economic disparities could spark class-based revolts with ethnic undertones. Tinubu’s failure to act decisively unlike Obasanjo’s 2000 peace accords or Yar’Adua’s amnesty programs shows a leader either clueless or complicit. His Southwest base may cheer, but the rest of Nigeria seethes and history teaches us that such imbalances end in chaos. Tinubu’s regime has turned bigotry into a national crisis, betraying Nigeria’s dream of unity. His policies, silence and favoritism have revived wounds that past generations bled to heal. Nigerians deserve a leader who bridges divides, not one who digs trenches for political gain. The blood in Plateau, the slurs in Lagos, the despair of citizens are Tinubu’s legacy. The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has expressed deep concern over the increasing cases of motorists driving against traffic and violating traffic lights in Abuja. In a stern warning issued on Thursday, the FCT Administration vowed to prosecute offenders before a Mobile Court and impose penalties as stipulated by law. The FCTA, through its Transportation Secretariat, also declared that vehicles of offenders would be impounded in addition to the fines. In a statement by the Director of the Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS), Abdulateef Bello, the Administration emphasised that driving against traffic and beating Red Lights are serious offences under the FCT Road Transport Regulations 2023 (Regulation 18, No. 172-173) and attract fines. The statement read in part, “The FCT Transportation Secretariat has observed with concern the rate at which motorists drive against traffic and commit red light violations in the Federal Capital City and Territory. “The motoring public is hereby warned that henceforth, anyone caught in violation of these traffic offences will have their vehicles impounded and be arraigned before a Mobile Court for prosecution and penalty administration.” He stated that the crackdown aimed to restore order and ensure compliance with traffic laws in the nation’s capital city. |
