The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory on Monday, met with the traditional chiefs and representatives of the Kpaduma and Guzape communities over the ongoing road construction project and the concerns raised regarding the evacuation of affected villagers. The meeting which took place at the FCT Minister’s conference room in Lifecamp, Abuja was convened at the instance of the Minister to address the growing tension surrounding the continued presence of residents in areas marked for development, particularly for the major road infrastructure intended to ease traffic and boost connectivity within the FCT. The Minister emphasized the importance of the road project to the overall development plan of the capital city, acknowledging the deep-rooted attachment the communities have to their ancestral lands but appealed for understanding, noting that government’s development efforts must sometimes involve difficult decisions. In a bid to reach an amicable resolution, the Minister assured the chiefs and their people of government’s commitment to ensure justice and fairness. He noted that every affected individual would be duly compensated and that Right of Occupancy (R of Os) for new resettlement areas would be provided without delay, as was the case with the Gishiri community in Katampe district. “We are not here to displace anyone unjustly,” the Minister stated. “This is about building a better Abuja for all. We will ensure your people are properly compensated and given legal documents for their new homes”. he noted. The Minister, however, clarified that compensation would be paid for only the structures along the road corridor and not the entire community. He also directed that the compensation package should be doubled to ensure fairness. “I have told the Director of Resettlement to go and make a valuation. But the rate you people are using is too small. Increase their rate. If they are earning N50, give them N100”, the Minister stressed. Responding, the traditional leaders of Kpaduma and Guzape, led by the Sapeyi of Garki, Alhaji Usman Nga Kupi, expressed their appreciation to the FCT Minister for his transparency and willingness to engage them directly. Acknowledging the development benefits the road project would bring to the area, the traditional leaders unanimously agreed to cooperate with the evacuation and resettlement process. “We are grateful for the Minister’s assurance and the respect shown to our people. We will support this effort in the interest of peace and progress”, the Sapeyi remarked. The meeting ended with both parties committing to ongoing dialogue and collaboration to ensure a smooth and respectful transition for all affected families. Also present during the meeting were, the Chairman, Abuja Municipal Area Council, Christopher Maikalangu, the Executive Secretary, FCDA, Richard Yunana Dauda and other senior officials of the FCT Administration.

Nyesom Wike. “Mr. President alone cannot fix Nigeria. We need to join hands with him, irrespective of party affiliations. Let us put politics aside and support what is good,” Ortom stated during an inspection tour of ongoing projects in Abuja alongside the FCT Minister. Ortom, who served as Minister under President Goodluck Jonathan and has been active in Nigerian politics since 1982, said he has never seen the level of infrastructural development currently taking place in the FCT under Wike’s leadership. “I’ve seen several Ministers of the FCT, but this is the first time I am witnessing monumental development in Abuja,” Ortom said. “I am very proud of what my friend and colleague, Nyesom Wike, is doing.” He commended President Tinubu for putting national interest above politics by appointing Wike, a prominent opposition figure, to head the Ministry of the Federal Capital Territory. “If Mr. President was a partisan leader, he wouldn’t have appointed Wike, who is from the opposition. But he saw capacity, and that’s leadership,” Ortom noted. The former governor expressed admiration for the transformation taking place across Abuja, including major roadworks, the construction of world-class bus terminals, and the introduction of a painted taxi system aimed at reorganizing the city’s transport sector. “I’ve seen Kugbo and Mabushi terminals these are facilities we usually see abroad,” he said. “To now see them in our own capital is something to celebrate.” Ortom revealed that despite being a long-time resident of the FCT, the speed and scale of developments under Wike had left him needing a guide to navigate the city. “I have lived in Abuja since 2008, but with what I see today, I need a guide to move around. That’s how much the city has changed in just one year,” he added.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike, says the performance of President Bola Tinubu in the FCT in the last two years is unprecedented. Wike stated this in Abuja on Thursday, after he inspected some ongoing projects in preparation for inauguration to celebrate Tinubu’s second anniversary. The minister said he was very happy with the achievements recorded by Tinubu, particularly as it concerns the FCT saying “it has never happened before”. He said that Tinubu has done tremendously well, adding that his performance was evident in every part of the country. Wike said that following the visible performance, Nigerians were already advocating that Tinubu should be given another opportunity to serve. “Tinubu’s achievements in FCT are unprecedented, and in the next two and four years, you’ll see what is going to happen in this country. “Yesterday I said the simple truth, all of us who are critics have said before that Abuja was not working but have now confessed that Abuja is now working. “Who has made it to work? It is Mr President,” he said. The minister said he would concentrate and focus on the assignment given to him by Tinubu to transform Abuja to a befitting capital city that Nigerians would be proud of. Speaking on the projects’ inspection, Wike said that the move was to ensure that the contractors deliver the projects as promised. He said he was particularly impressed with the delivery of the Apo to Wassa Junction Road, (the left-wing service lane of the Outer Southern Expressway). Which he said was 100 per cent completed. He said that the Apo – Wassa road would also be fitted with streetlights to improve security in the area, adding that the contractor CGC has already submitted a proposal to that effect. “We also went to N20 Interchange to connect Wole Soyinka Way with the Murtala Mohammed Expressway, popularly known as Kubwa Expressway which would be completed and inaugurated. “We equally inspected the access road from the Obafemi Awolowo Way to the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal in Dakibiyu District, which is also expected to be completed and inaugurated. “Frankly speaking, like I have always said, the residents of Abuja deserve the best and the contractors are doing their best I can assure you that. “For me, I cannot give nothing less,” he said. The minister said that Tinubu had insisted that Nigeria deserved the best “and we will do everything we can to make sure we give them the best. “You can see the infrastructure in terms of roads. It is unimaginable and we will continue to do that.” He, however, called on residents of the FCT to also perform their obligation and support the administration for the interest of Abuja and the entire Nigerians.

Imo State, Nigeria — Amidst growing concern over a recent diphtheria outbreak in parts of Imo State, former Governor and statesman, Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha CON, KSC, has issued a heartfelt call to action, urging citizens and stakeholders to rally around science, public health, and collective responsibility to protect the state’s most vulnerable, its children. In a public statement titled “Let’s Save the Children,” Ihedioha expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of young lives to the infectious disease and extended his condolences to the affected families. "May the Almighty God console you all," he said with empathy, acknowledging the grief that has befallen the community. Diphtheria, a preventable bacterial infection that disproportionately affects young children, has been identified as the cause of the outbreak. Ihedioha emphasized the role of childhood immunization in preventing such occurrences, pointing out that the resurgence highlights the existence of “zero-dose” children, those who have either not received the DTP (Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis) vaccine at all or did not complete the required doses. "This outbreak now clearly shows that there are some children in our homes who have never received the DTP vaccine or did not receive the complete three doses of it for full effectiveness," he stated, adding that the painful reality is often linked to parental negligence or lack of awareness. Commending the swift response of government officials, traditional rulers, religious leaders, town union executives, and healthcare professionals, Ihedioha praised their efforts in raising awareness and containing the disease. He reassured the public that diphtheria, while dangerous, is treatable if detected early and addressed with the right therapy. Urging calm and cooperation, Ihedioha called on residents to heed the instructions of health authorities. "Please, do as the professionals instruct: let’s follow science even as we pray to Almighty God for divine protection and healing," he advised, warning against unverified remedies that could worsen the situation. He also emphasized the importance of good hygiene practices and environmental care. “Let’s pay greater attention to personal and environmental hygiene, including proper aeration of homes to avoid overcrowding. The Senate has approved N1.8trillion for the 2025 Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) Statutory Appropriation Bill. This followed the presentation of the report of Committees on FCT on the bill by Chairman of the Committee Sen. Bomai Ibrahim (APC-Yobe) at plenary on Wednesday. Ibrahim, in his report, said the Senate and the House Committee on FCT met with the minister and other relevant officials of the FCT administration to deliberate on the appropriation bill. He said the breakdown of the budget includes personnel cost of N106 billion, overhead of N352 billion, total recurrent was proposed for N502 billion while capital expenditure proposed was N1.3trillion. He said the total personal cost constitutes 8.29 per cent of the budget while the total recurrent of the budget constitute 27.69 per cent while the total capital was 72.31 per cent. He said out of the 72.31 per cent, 85 per cent of the capital was dedicated to ongoing projects, adding that only 50 per cent of the capital was for new projects. According to him, the best practice for budget framework was usually 70 per cent for capital and 30 per cent for recurrent. He, however, said it was commendable that FCT budget has 72.32 per cent for capital and 27.69 overhead. “This shows that the structure of the budget is in conformity with the best practice,” he said. Contributing, Sen. Barau Jibrin (APC-Kano) said the leadership of FCTA has done well in the administration of the FCT. He said Senate should support the laudable efforts of the FCT minister and his team to improve infrastructure development by approving the budget. Today, May 26, 2025, we commenced enforcement on the 4,794 properties revoked for non-payment of Ground Rent, from 10 to 43 years. Properties owned by government institutions, corporate organisations and individuals were affected. This demonstrates the Federal Capital Territory Administration’s commitment to carrying out its functions without fear or favour. However, the President, His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, has intervened. Therefore, by Mr. President’s intervention, holders of the affected properties now have 14 days (TWO WEEKS) to settle the outstanding Ground Rents, with associated penalties. For properties in the Central Area, the sum of N5 million will be paid by the defaulters as penalty, in addition to the Ground Rent owed. Those in Maitama, Asokoro, Wuse II, and Guzape Districts will pay the sum of N3 million as penalty, in addition to the Ground Rent owed. Defaulters in Wuse I, Garki I and Garki II will pay N2 million as penalty in addition to the Ground Rent owed. Also, all those who purchased properties from other people, but are yet to register their interests by obtaining the mandatory Minister’s Consent and registering their Deeds of Assignment now have 14 days (TWO WEEKS) to do so at the FCT Department of Land Administration. Furthermore, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barrister Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, CON, has granted a 14 days (TWO WEEKS) grace period to all property holders in the FCT to pay up their Right of Occupancy (R-of-O)/Certificate of Occupancy (C-of-O) bills, or risk revocation of those titles. Going forward, the Minister has advised property owners in the FCT to ensure that they pay all necessary bills and charges on their properties as at and when due, so as to enable the government to continue to carry out necessary developmental projects for the benefit of the people. Abuja, May 26, 2025 — In a sweeping enforcement operation, the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has sealed several high-profile properties across Abuja for failing to pay ground rent, some of which have defaulted for decades. Among the affected properties is the Total Petrol Station in Zones 3 and 5, both of which have been sealed and revoked due to non-payment of statutory ground rent. This action is part of a broader effort by the FCTA to recover billions of naira in outstanding debts owed by property owners in the capital city. Also sealed is the Access Bank branch located within Wuse Market, which is reportedly owing 34 years' worth of ground rent. The FCTA enforcement team took action earlier today, shutting down operations at the busy commercial site. In another major development, the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) office in Zone 5 was sealed for defaulting on 25 years of ground rent. This comes as a shock, given the agency’s role in revenue generation and tax compliance nationwide. The crackdown did not spare the hospitality and political sectors. Ibro Hotel, a long-standing establishment in Zone 5, was sealed for owing ground rent for 26 years. Likewise, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) National Secretariat, also in Zone 5, was shut down. FCTA officials disclosed that the property, owned by Senator Samaila Mamman Kurfi, has not paid ground rent in the past 28 years. These actions signal a renewed commitment by the FCTA to enforce urban development regulations and ensure that all property owners fulfill their financial obligations. According to FCTA officials, this exercise will continue in phases until full compliance is achieved. The administration has urged property owners and institutions to verify their ground rent status and settle all outstanding debts promptly to avoid similar enforcement measures.

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) will, from Monday, next week begin to take possession of the 4,794 properties revoked over non-payment of Ground Rent, for between 10 and 43 years. This was made known during a press briefing on Friday, by the FCT Minister’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, Director of Land Administration, Chijioke Nwankwoeze and Director Department of Development Control, Mukhtar Galadima. They said; “ownership of the revoked 4,794 properties in the Central Area, Garki I and II, Wuse I and II, Asokoro, Maitama and Guzape districts, had already reverted to the FCTA, and as from Monday, next week, the government will begin to exercise its rights of ownership on the affected landed properties. “As usual, this will be done without consideration as to ownership of the affected landed properties. It will be purely in line with extant laws and regulations guiding the process.” The Director of Development Control, explained that affected properties will be sealed up and access to them restricted as from Monday. He said the FCTA will decide what to do with the affected properties in due course. On the claim that some people went to court, the Director of Lands stated that there was no court decision on the revocation, and as such, the FCTA is not restricted in the discharge of its lawful functions on the affected properties. Chijioke Nwankwoeze also disclosed that the FCTA was already compiling records of compliance and non-compliance of title holders that were in default of payment of Ground Rent for between one and ten years, who were given a grace of 21 Days to pay up. He said the government will act accordingly as soon as the records are fully complied and analyzed. The address; “Recall that on March 18, 2025, we informed you of the revocation of 4,794 land titles in the Central Area, Garki I and II, Wuse I and II, Asokoro, Maitama and Guzape districts. These 4,794 properties were among the total of 8,375 land titles on which Ground Rent was not paid from one year to 43 years. We did say then that consequent upon the revocation of these titles, ownership of the affected properties have reverted to the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA). As from Monday, May 26, 2025, the FCTA will begin to take possession of the affected properties, using relevant agencies of government. As usual, this will be done without consideration as to ownership of the affected properties. It will be purely in line with extant laws and regulations guiding the process. Recall too that a grace of 21 Days was given to title holders that were in default of payment of Ground Rent for between one and ten years, to pay up or have their land tittles revoked. Relevant agencies of the FCTA are already compiling records of compliance and non-compliance with this directive, with a view to acting accordingly. It is important to state that payment of Ground Rent on landed properties in the FCT is founded on extant legislation. It is clearly stipulated in the terms and conditions of grant of Right of Occupancy, and it is due for payment on the first day of January, each year, without demand. In March, this year, list of land titles in default of payment of Ground Rent was compiled in the ten oldest districts of Phase 1 of the Federal Capital City (FCC), namely; Central Area District (Cadastral Zone A00), Garki I (Cadastral Zone A01), Wuse I (Cadastral Zone A02), Garki II (Cadastral Zone A03), Asokoro (Cadastral Zone A04), Maitama (Cadastral Zone A05), Maitama (Cadastral Zone A06), Wuse II (Cadastral Zone A07), Wuse II (Cadastral Zone A08) and Guzape (Cadastral Zone A09). In the listed districts, a total of 4,794 land titles were in default of Ground rent payment for 10 years and above. As at then, a total of N6,967,980,119 was being owed as Ground Rent by 8,375 property owners. This contravenes the terms and conditions of grant of the Rights of Occupancy, in line with the provisions of Section 28, Subsections 5(a) and (b) of the Land Use Act. Consequently, the titles of the properties in default were revoked in March 2025. Therefore, from Monday, May 26, 2025, the FCTA will begin to exercise its lawful rights of taking possession of these revoked properties. |

Tinubu Regime’s Shameful Legacy: Fueling Bigotry in Nigeria’s Fractured History By Oke Umurhohwo Since Bola Tinubu took office on May 29, 2023, Nigeria has spiraled into a cesspool of bigotry, be it ethnic, religious or regional hatred that very much now threatens to unravel the nation’s fragile unity. This regimes’s policies, silence and blatant favoritism have deepened divisions and also betrayed Nigeria’s long struggle to overcome its historical fault lines. From election violence to nepotistic appointments, Tinubu’s regime has emboldened prejudice, making bigotry a defining feature of his tenure. Nigeria’s history is scarred by division. The 1914 amalgamation forcibly merged diverse ethnic groups, sowing seeds of mistrust that persist today. The 1966 coups, fueled by ethnic rivalries, led to the pogroms against Igbos in the North, culminating in the Biafran War (1967–1970), which killed millions. Post-war policies like the “no victor, no vanquished” mantra aimed to heal wounds, but marginalization of Igbos persisted, evident in limited federal appointments and infrastructure neglect in the Southeast. Religious tensions also simmered, with riots like the 1987 Kafanchan crisis pitting Muslims against Christians. The Fourth Republic (1999–present) saw progress, with power-sharing norms like Christian-Muslim ticket balancing, but flare-ups such as the 2011 post-election violence killing over 800 people showed bigotry’s resilience. Under previous administrations, bigotry was often managed, if imperfectly. Obasanjo’s government (1999–2007) pushed national conferences to address ethnic grievances, while Jonathan’s tenure (2010–2015) faced criticism for favoring South-South interests but avoided overt tribalism. Buhari’s regime (2015–2023) was accused of Northern favoritism, yet it maintained religious ticket balance. Tinubu’s presidency, however, marks a reckless departure, amplifying divisions through actions that echo the worst of Nigeria’s past while introducing new wounds. Tinubu’s regime has not just failed to curb bigotry, it has actively fueled it. The 2023 elections were a low point, reminiscent of the ethnic purges of the 1960s. In Lagos, Igbo voters faced violent intimidation, with thugs allegedly tied to Tinubu’s political machine attacking polling units and shouting slurs like “go back to Onitsha.” Videos on various social media platforms showed voters fleeing for safety, evoking memories of pre-Biafra pogroms. Tinubu’s silence as a candidate and later president signaled tacit approval, undermining democratic trust and reviving Igbo marginalization fears. This wasn’t just electoral malpractice; it was a tribal assault on Nigeria’s pluralism. Tinubu’s Muslim-Muslim ticket with Kashim Shettima shattered Nigeria’s unwritten rule of religious balance, a norm upheld since 1999 to manage Christian-Muslim tensions. Historically, such balance prevented crises like the 1980s Sharia riots. By prioritizing political expediency, Tinubu alienated Christians, who make up nearly half the population, fueling fears of religious domination. His flippant defense of “competence over faith” ignored the symbolic weight of representation, deepening distrust in a way not seen since the 1993 Abiola annulment crisis, which sparked religious unrest. Furthermore, Tinubu’s appointments are a masterclass in ethnic favoritism, rivaling the Northern hegemony under Buhari. Key roles in finance, economy, security and aviation overwhelmingly favour Yoruba allies. Under this regime, it appears and feels like bigotry is baked into state policy. The Southeast, historically shortchanged since Biafra, is again sidelined, with none of their person represented in top security posts as of 2025. This mirrors the post-civil war era, where Igbos were excluded from power, fostering resentment. Tinubu’s nepotism isn’t just unfair, it’s a recipe for regional rebellion. Tinubu’s economic reforms, like fuel subsidy removal, have hit harder in poorer regions like the Northeast and Southeast, where infrastructure is weakest. This reflects “anti-Igbo and anti-North bias,” as Lagos-centric policies flourish while other zones languish. Historically, regional economic disparities fueled the 1966 coups. By prioritizing urban Southwest interests, Tinubu risks alienating entire regions, breeding resentment that could ignite violence. The regime’s crackdown on journalists, with 12 detained in 2024 for “inciting unrest,” mirrors the censorship of the 1980s military era. Outlets critical of Tinubu, especially those owned by non-Yoruba, face harassment. This selective targeting fuels narratives of ethnic bias. Tinubu’s media war is a Yoruba power grab. Suppressing free speech while allowing pro-government propaganda deepens polarization, undermining the press as a unifying force. Tinubu’s claim of being “no bigot” is laughable when his actions scream otherwise. Tinubu’s presidency doesn’t just echo historical failures, it amplifies them. Unlike past leaders who at least paid lip service to unity, Tinubu’s regime seems to thrive on division. His nepotism surpasses Buhari’s, his religious insensitivity outstrips military era decrees, and his inaction on violence rivals the chaos of the Second Republic’s collapse. Economically, his policies widen gaps that historically fueled unrest, while his repression of dissent revives authoritarian ghosts. The social media outcry a warning of a nation on the brink, as seen in the prelude to Biafra. The implications are dire. Ethnic distrust undermines institutions. Religious tensions threaten to revive sectarian violence, while economic disparities could spark class-based revolts with ethnic undertones. Tinubu’s failure to act decisively unlike Obasanjo’s 2000 peace accords or Yar’Adua’s amnesty programs shows a leader either clueless or complicit. The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has expressed deep concern over the increasing cases of motorists driving against traffic and violating traffic lights in Abuja. In a stern warning issued on Thursday, the FCT Administration vowed to prosecute offenders before a Mobile Court and impose penalties as stipulated by law. The FCTA, through its Transportation Secretariat, also declared that vehicles of offenders would be impounded in addition to the fines. In a statement by the Director of the Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS), Abdulateef Bello, the Administration emphasised that driving against traffic and beating Red Lights are serious offences under the FCT Road Transport Regulations 2023 (Regulation 18, No. 172-173) and attract fines. The statement read in part, “The FCT Transportation Secretariat has observed with concern the rate at which motorists drive against traffic and commit red light violations in the Federal Capital City and Territory. “The motoring public is hereby warned that henceforth, anyone caught in violation of these traffic offences will have their vehicles impounded and be arraigned before a Mobile Court for prosecution and penalty administration.” He stated that the crackdown aimed to restore order and ensure compliance with traffic laws in the nation’s capital city. |

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike, has earmarked part of the N1.78 trillion proposed 2025 FCT statutory budget for the completion of 14 ongoing roads projects across the territory. Wike disclosed this in Abuja on Wednesday, when he appeared before the Senate and House of Representative Committees on FCT, to defend the 2025 FCT proposed budget. He explained that out of the N1.78 trillion, N1.28 trillion was earmarked for capital projects, representing 72.3 per cent, while N494.1 billion was set aside as recurrent expenditure, representing 27.7 per cent. He explained that road projects, sited both in the city centre and satellite towns would be handled by the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) and the Satellite Towns Development Department (STDD). The minister explained a total of N801.5 billion was allocated to the FCDA while N137 billion was allocated to the STDD for execution of capital projects. He identified some of the projects as the completion of roads B6 and B12 and full scope development of Arterial Road N20 from Northern Parkway to Outer Northern Expressway (ONEX). Also pencilled for competition is the provision of engineering infrastructure to Guzape Districts, provision of engineering infrastructure to Wuye District and provision of engineering infrastructure to Maitama II District. “Others are the extension of Inner Southern Expressway (ISEX) from Southern Parkway (S8/S9) to Ring Road II, and full scope development of FCT Highway 105 (Kuje Road) from Airport Expressway to Outer Southern Expressway OSEX with Spur at Kyami District. “Also for completion are the construction of Northern Parkway from Ring Road II to Ring Road III (6.2Km), full scope development of Arterial Road N20 from Arterial Road N5, and Rehabilitation of Old Keffi Road. “The full scope development of Arterial Road N1 from Wuye District to Ring Road II, and the provision of access road to Bus Terminals in FCT would also be completed. “Other ongoing road projects include the dualisation and upgrading of Ushafa War College/Army Check Point Road and other Ancillary Roads, and construction of Pai to Gomani Road in Kwali Area Council and dualization of Kuje to Gwagwalada Road,” he said. The minister explained that the 14 ongoing projects would be sped up and completed before the end of 2025 fiscal year. According to him the expansion and rehabilitation of the roads would eventually reduce the travel time and traffic gridlock on roads within and outside the capital city.

The Abuja Metropolitan Management Council of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has given its Development Control Department 48 hours to demolish more than 10 duplexes built on a green area. The Coordinator, Mr Felix Obuah, gave the order in Abuja on Thursday, during a joint inspection of illegal construction of illegal structures across the city. Obuah explained that the duplexes were built on a green area in Wumba District, close to Apo in Abuja, with no authorisation. He said that officials of development control had earlier asked the developer to stop work, including marking the structures. He, however, said that the developer ignored the order and even covered the stopped order written on the building and continued the construction project. The coordinator said that the developer had given the council no option but to demolish all the illegal buildings. “When we invited the developer to provide legal documents for the activities he’s carrying out, we all discovered that there is no paper, no approval, no allocation. “I asked him to stop working, but you can see that the work is still going on. “So, all these properties that you are seeing here are all going down,” he added. He said the FCT Administration would not tolerate any development that contravened the provision of the Abuja Master Plan. The Director of Development Control, Mr Mukhtar Galadima, also said that the developer has no approval from any authority. “We didn’t give the developer any approval, and when you look around, you would see the evidence that we had marked these structures at different stages of development. “Unfortunately, people don’t like to respect constituted authority and as I told my colleagues, the only language Nigerians understand is the language of bulldozers that will bring the structures down. “We are looking at more than 10 structures, some are roofed, and some are not yet roofed. “So, the development control will come with its bulldozers and in less than 48 hours everything here will go down,” he said. Also, the Director Parks and Recreation, FCTA, Mr Chidemelu Echee, said that Abuja city was designed in neighbourhoods to ensure unison between nature and construction of structures. Echee said: “It is very unfortunate that people will come into a place like this and start a random destruction of the natural ecosystem without any authorisation. “This is a disaster waiting to happen because when we talk about global warming of the entire system, this is part of it.” On his part, the Director, Abuja Environmental Protection Board, Mr Osilama Braimah, said that the illegal structures, if allowed to stand, the people would suffer the consequences living without trees and vegetation. Speaking on the impact on the environment, Braimah explained that the proliferation of concrete buildings retains and radiates heat, making the environment hotter. According to him, it is essential to have designated green spaces to maintain a conducive ambient temperature. “When concrete covers everything, it prevents percolation, leading to increased flooding downstream. “To mitigate this, we must preserve green areas to facilitate percolation, groundwater recharge, and maintain healthy boreholes and wells.”

President of ARD-FCTA, Dr George Ebong, confirmed the development to DAILY POST on Wednesday. According to him, the decision to suspend the industrial action followed an emergency virtual recess meeting held by members of the association. He commended the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, and his team for their intervention. “We called off the warning strike after some of our demands were met. The Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) has announced the commencement of a major infrastructure project along the Inner Southern Expressway (ISEX), aimed at constructing a new interchange bridge to improve traffic flow within Abuja’s Central Business District. The construction, which began today, has prompted a traffic diversion affecting a key segment of the expressway. According to the FCDA, the diversion will span from Herbert Macauley Way, just after the Abuja International Conference Centre (AICC), and extend to the intersection before the National Defence College, also involving the junction at Herbert Macauley Way and Moshood Abiola Road. To accommodate the ongoing works, motorists will now be rerouted via Zakaria Maimalari Street, which runs past the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) office in the CBD. Landmarks along this temporary route include Chelsea Hotel and Access Bank PLC. The diversion then reconnects with Moshood Abiola Road, terminating near the Herbert Macauley T-junction by the AICC. The United Nations has commended the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) for its multisectoral approach to ending all forms of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV). Dr Najat M’jid, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General on Violence against Children, gave the commendation in Abuja on Tuesday, when she visited the Awyetu Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC). The SARC, located at Bwari General Hospital was established in 2020 by the British Council on behalf of the European Union under its Rule of Law and Anticorruption (ROLAC) Programme. The centre was established to provide comprehensive medical, psychological, and legal support to survivors of sexual violence, with a special focus on children and vulnerable populations. M’jid expressed excitement with the synergy among the different sectors working together to eliminate all forms of SGBV in the FCT. “I am happy today because of what I have seen – many ministries are onboard supporting the fight against SGBV. “This is because the problem is not only the problem of FCT Women Affairs; the issues are also in health, in Justice, and in communities,” she said. She said that she was in the country to understand what was being done to address SGBV, “and how together, we can move forward”. She added that Nigeria was one of the paths finding countries on ending violence against children. She also said that the country was very involved and very committed to end all forms of violence against children and had made pledges. “Visit to Nigeria is to see how we can move ahead, how we can support and how we can achieve set targets from the many commitments the country has made. “We want to see how we can translate those commitments into concrete services that will prevent and address all forms of violence against children,” she said. The special representative, however, stressed the need to address the drivers of SGBV, detect and respond to reported cases and ensure that it was not happening again. She further said: “It is really important to make sure that the victims can be heard, be considered and be seen as victims and make the perpetrators accountable. “There is also the need to stop justifying violence against children and women through poverty and through social norms”. Earlier, the Mandate Secretary, FCT Women Affairs Secretariat, Mrs Adebayo Benjamins-Laniyi, pointed out that a multisectoral problem required a multisectoral approach to tackle it. Benjamins-Laniyi said that a stronger synergy was required among critical stakeholders to deliver critical intervention from the local to the state level, in line with global best practices. She described M’jid visit as a “positive disruption” that sparked a desire to strengthen partnership and collaboration among the different stakeholders to do more for women and children in the FCT. The mandate secretary said that the FCT Administration had rolled out plans to reposition the SARC centre to provide quality integrated services to SGBV survivors. Also, the Mandate Secretary, Health Services and Environment Secretariat, Dr Adedolapo Fasawe, said that M’jid’s visit reaffirmed the global resolve to protect children from violence. Fasawe, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary in the secretariat, Dr Baba-Gana Adam, added that the visit was very encouraging. She added that the visit also reinforced the role of sexual assault centre in ensuring access to care, justice, and dignity for survivors of sexual and gender-based violence. She disclosed that the hospital had continued to sustain the provision of services at the centre when the ROLAC support ended, but amidst numerous challenges. The mandate secretary, identified some of the challenges as funding for essential drugs and kits, staff training and incentives, inconsistent collaboration with law enforcements, and absence of prevention and community awareness programmes.

Defining Journalism: Why Chief Dele Momodu May Not Fit the Professional Standard of Being Called a Journalist. By: 'Biodun Ogundiran. In every profession, the thin line between expertise and quackery is drawn by standards—standards that define not only who belongs but also what qualifies a person to bear the title of a professional. Medicine has its regulatory councils. Law has its bar. Engineering and architecture are not exempt. Journalism, too, is a profession—complete with standards, codes of conduct, and professional bodies that regulate entry and practice. Unfortunately, in Nigeria, the sanctity of journalism is increasingly under threat as the space becomes cluttered with individuals whose only claim to the title “journalist” is visibility. This has created a confusing climate where content creators, bloggers, public commentators, and even social media influencers are casually labelled “journalists”. The situation in Nigeria today, especially with the explosion of digital media, highlights this challenge even more acutely. The Nigerian Union of Journalists' definition provides a necessary framework in a landscape where the lines have become increasingly blurred. According to the Nigerian Union of Journalists, for any person to be recognized as a journalist in Nigeria, one must hold a degree or Higher National Diploma (HND) in Journalism, Mass Communication, or a related discipline from a recognized institution. In addition, the individual must have at least one year of working experience in a registered media organization. Alternatively, persons with postgraduate qualifications in journalism or those who have consistently practiced journalism under recognized platforms for a set number of years can also be inducted—emphasis on recognized institutions and verifiable practice. Dele Momodu is undeniably a media personality and a respected publisher. His work, through Ovation International, has gained continental and global recognition. However, prestige or media involvement alone does not equate to being a journalist. The question we must ask is simple: Does Dele Momodu meet the professional threshold as defined by the NUJ? Let's first of all take a look at my own personal career. I worked in the bank for almost twenty years but was never a banker. I was a Human Resource Management practitioner and I practiced my profession in the Banking environment and many other sectors for many years. I belong to my own professional body and got professionally certificated not minding the sector where I ply my trade. Or does working at the Records Office of a Hospital qualifies one to be called a Medical Practitioner? -time spent in an environment doesn't automatically confer professional status on anybody. Now, premised upon the earlier stated definition of a 'journalist' according to the Nigerian Union of Journalists, Let's delve into articulating a defense for the statement made by Mr. Lere Olayinka the other day on Arise Television, that Chief Dele Momodu is not a journalist. Does he hold a degree or HND in Journalism or Mass Communication? If not, then by NUJ’s definition, he does not meet the foundational academic requirement to be recognized as a journalist. Working in a media house does not automatically confer the title of "journalist," just as working in a bank does not make one a banker or working in a University Canteen for 50 years qualifies you to be labelled as Academic. It was like NUJ saw today from many years ago when they put an emphatic definition on whom to be called a journalist in their professional handout and code of conduct. Kudos to the authors who thought of those stringent requirements. Look at our media spaces today and see if professionalism is being upheld. You see a television host shouting and fighting his guests like Rufai Oseni will always do on Arise, or you see a Dr. Reuben Abati, fighting his colleagues on live broadcast for not addressing him with his title. The authors of NUJ Professional Guidelines assumed that if anybody had passed through training in Mass Communication, or obtained any other training or certification in Journalism, such an individual would have learnt certain decorum of the job. Journalism, like law or medicine, is a profession with regulatory oversight. The NUJ exists to uphold ethics, standards, and professionalism. If Momodu has never been certified by the NUJ or any recognized journalism body, then Lere Olayinka was right. Dele Momodu being called a journalist because of his experience in Concord Newspaper or for his Photo Album production (according to Lere Olayinka) is merely informal—not professional. In like manner, the media space today is flooded with individuals who, despite their influence, lack formal journalism training. This has led to a decline in ethical reporting, sensationalism, and misinformation. Just because someone writes columns, hosts a show, or runs a blog does not make them a journalist. True journalism requires training in media law, ethics, fact-checking, and responsible reporting—skills acquired through structured education and professional certification. Experience alone does not equal qualification. Momodu’s media experience is commendable, but experience without formal training is like a self-taught surgeon operating on patients. Would we accept that in medicine? Why then should journalism, a profession that shapes public opinion and holds power accountable, be any less stringent? We must be bold to say this at least to check all these Rufai's in our media spaces . Unfortunately, it is only in Nigeria that we accept and celebrate quacks. In advanced societies, crossing into a regulated profession without certification is nearly impossible. A teacher with 20 years experience in Nigeria cannot walk into a British classroom without proper credentials, nor can a foreign doctor practice in the U.S. without passing licensing exams. Why should journalism be different? The NUJ’s stance is not elitism—it is about maintaining professionalism and that is what Lere Olayinka, a member of that profession, expressed on Arise Television and some people are asking for his head. I was more disturbed when I saw the calibre of people that came online to condemn Lere Olayinka's submission. What a pity? For me, the NUJ’s definition, as emphasised by Mr. Lere Olayinka, is not to exclude but to protect the profession from charlatans. If Chief Dele Momodu lacks the academic and professional credentials, then calling him a "journalist" is a stretch—no matter his popularity and experience. The same applies to many media personalities today who operate without adherence to journalistic standards. If we want credible, ethical, and responsible journalism, we must insist on qualifications. Otherwise, we risk celebrating mediocrity and eroding public trust in the media. Lere Olayinka and the NUJ are right—journalism is a profession, not a hobby. It is not a job that because somebody with a Degree in Animal Anatomy could not get a job in the Veterinary Hospital and resorted to being a TV host. Let’s stop conflating influence with professionalism. A writer is not always a journalist. A media personality is not always a journalist. True journalism has standards—and those standards matter. The Minister, who apologized to the First Lady and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on behalf of the people of Rivers State, said "insult on anyone representing the First Lady of Nigeria in an event is a direct insult on the office of the President and Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and as a leader in Rivers State, I apologize." Some women, led by some sacked Local Government Vice Chairmen had staged a walkout during the Renewed Hope Initiative empowerment programme organised by the office of the First Lady of Nigeria, held at the EUI Event Centre in GRA, Port Harcourt, yesterday. The programme was meant to benefit 500 women in the state with various empowerment items. According to a statement on Saturday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, the FCT Minister, who is in China for official engagements, described the incident as "very disturbing and embarrassing," cautioning supporters of the suspended governor to desist from ridiculing the State. The Minister counselled the suspended governor to demonstrate honesty by being bold enough to tell President Tinubu, what exactly he wanted, rather than saying something today, and doing another thing tomorrow. He said; "It is not enough to be visiting people to plead for peace, those who genuinely want peace work and act for it. "These are the same people pleading for peace, but at the same time doing things that are contrary to what they are pleading for. "How can you say you want peace and at the same time, you are sponsoring people to insult everyone, including the President and his wife? "All those shenanigans won't bring peace, and I am sure they know that, because they are not sincere with their up and down pleadings for peace. "As for me and those who subscribe to my leadership, we condemn in totality that yesterday's show of shame and we apologize to our First Lady for the embarrassing conduct of those few women who do not represent the characters and ideals of the people of Rivers State." Wike Reaffirms Commitment to Workers’ Welfare at 2025 Labour Day Celebration in Abuja Abuja – May 1, 2025 The Honourable Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barrister Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the welfare, rights, and career advancement of workers within the FCT. The Minister’s remarks were delivered on his behalf by the FCT Head of Service, Dr. Grace Adayilo, during the 2025 International Labour Day celebration held in Abuja. Speaking at the colourful event, Wike acknowledged the indispensable role of workers in national development, describing them as the “backbone of effective public service delivery.” He welcomed workers from across Nigeria and saluted their dedication, resilience, and patriotism. The theme of this year’s celebration, “Reclaiming the Civic Space in the Midst of Economic Hardship,” was described by the Minister as timely and resonant, particularly in the face of prevailing economic challenges. He emphasized the need to safeguard democratic participation and uphold workers' rights in times of hardship, rather than allowing civic space to shrink. Since assuming office in 2023, Wike said he has prioritized the creation of a conducive working environment across the FCTA. He highlighted several ongoing initiatives aimed at boosting staff welfare and performance, including: - Prompt Payment of Salaries and Pensions: Wike reported full implementation of the new salary structure and payment of all arrears, noting that financial security is crucial for productivity. - Staff Training and Capacity Development: With emphasis on technological and administrative advancements, over sixty medical doctors have been recruited for residency training across eight specialties. - Upgrading of Workspaces: Various secretariats and agencies have undergone infrastructural renovations to improve work conditions. - Promotion and Career Progression: Measures have been instituted to support professional growth, including the ongoing staff regularisation and upcoming promotion exercises. Wike also addressed the ongoing strike by Area Council employees over non-payment of the new minimum wage. He disclosed that over ₦4.1 billion had been disbursed to the six Area Councils and urged them to fulfill their obligations to workers. In the education sector, the Minister disclosed that the FCTA has commenced major upgrades in public schools across the Area Councils, focusing on improved infrastructure, learning materials, and better working conditions for teachers. He concluded his speech with a call for continued partnership between government and organized labour, stressing that open civic engagement must thrive even during economic difficulties. “Every worker, from the lowest rank to the highest, contributes immensely to the progress and development of the Federal Capital Territory,” Wike stated. Addressing a mammoth crowd that thronged the Town Square meeting of the Ukanafun/Oruk Anam federal constituency on Tuesday at the QIC Central School, Ikot Akpankuk, headquarters of Ukanafun local government area, the governor disclosed that he might join the fray soon as the crucial 2027 election year inches closer. “If you wanted to travel with Ibom Airline, and on the verge of taking off, it developed a fault that won’t enable it to fly, won’t you board the next available plane to take you to your destination?” Eno queried.
