WoundedLamb: We've tried them before and there's a reason we dumped them. Nigerians of today cannot stand a military regime. The same people that scream when someone is arrested for naming his dog Buhari. The same people that scream when Buhari ignores courts orders. The same people that scream EndSars when they feel maltreated? Knowing that all these are nothing compared to what's obtainable under military regime, how do you think these people would react when it's rubbed on thier faces that there's nothing they can do and that they could even be sentenced to death for screaming or protesting?
You're probably saying this cause you weren't there during the military regime and there's a tendency to believe the grass is greener on the other side. But trust me, when the chips are down, the Nigerians of today will always value freedom above infrastructure. A military rule would be a hundred steps backwards.
My opinion. You're missing the fact that the reason why Nigerians did that was cos they were pushed to the wall |

WoundedLamb: Sad, really. But who are Africans and who are the politicians? This would have made more sense if the coup was about kicking some foreigners out of the country. But the case here is that of a group of people kicking out another group so that they'd go and have thier own share. Both the politicians and the coup plotters are from the same herd. And military rule hasn't proven to be any better in Africa. In fact, if coup was an ideal solution, Africa would have been better today given how many of them we've had.
I may not have a solution myself, but I think this is an issue of lack of checks and balances. I know African leaders are very corrupt but we also have corrupt minded politicians in the western world. They just don't have the enabling environment to do whatever they want. I believe what Africa needs is a system. We need to be governed by a system where people are just fillers. There's an obvious lack of well defined institutions.
But who will create this system and subject himself to it? Most infrastructure, development and currency valuations in west african countries today were as a result of military coups. Yeah the military have got theirs but in some instances especially when the citizens are in support of them, they tend to churn out result. Though military coups isn't favourable to the populace, i think it's high time we try them out. |
