Politics › FG Orders Security Agencies To Monitor Social Media Posts Of ‘prominent Nigerian by Simpledude0847(op): 5:19pm On Jan 25, 2018 |
The federal government has directed security agencies to tackle the propagation of hate speech, especially through social media The order was given at a security meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari at the presidential villa in Abuja.
Mansur Dan Ali, minister of defence, had described the trend of hate speech on social media as worrisome.
“Relevant security agencies should as a matter of urgency tackle the propagation of hate speeches through the social media, particularly by some notable Nigerians,” Ali said.
The development comes one year after Lai Mohammed, minister of information, vowed that the current administration would not regulate social media.
“We have said it before and we want to re-state it: the federal government has no immediate or long-term plan to stifle press freedom. Even the social media, with its warts and all, will neither be regulated nor have its operations tampered with,” he had said in January 2017.
Meanwhile, Dan Ali told state house correspondents that top on the agenda of the three hours meeting with Buhari was the stringent conditions imposed by the United States government for the sale of 12 Super Tucano A29 planes and other weapons to Nigeria at the rate of $495 million. He said US has insisted that payment must be made by February 20, 2018, and that the aircraft can only be available in 2020.
Dan Ali also said that the US government had asked Nigeria not to send its personnel to understudy the production process of the aircraft as Nigeria did done in the case of other countries.
“The contract include cost which is $494 million to acquire the Super Tucano A29 plans as well as training, where the facilities will be accommodated and continuous servicing among others,” he said.
“Some of the stringent measures include that we will start having them from 2020, which is two years from now. They are also thinking of not allowing our technicians to be part of the production inspection. But this is what we normally do in all the defence contracts, we send our personnel to go and understudy especially when it comes to specialized aircrafts like in Russia, our personnel are permanently based in where the production is being done for this MI35 helicopters.”
The minister said the council has approved that the officials of his ministry meet with the US ambassador to Nigeria, Stuart Symington, to iron out the contending issues.
In December, the government of Donald Trump agreed to sell the aircraft after the Obama administration halted it, citing poor human right record of the military. https://www.thecable.ng/breaking-fg-orders-security-agencies-monitor-social-media-posts

Crime › Re: Newsroom Exclusive: Fraudsters, Cultists And Drug Users Takeover Orile Iju by Simpledude0847(m): 4:27pm On Jan 25, 2018 |
Dreyxam: For residents of Orile Iju in lfako-Ijaiye local government in Lagos, living with the constant fear of cultists and fraudsters who have made the community their home has become a norm.
https://newsroom.ng/newsroom-exclusive-fraudsters-cultists-drug-users-takeover-lagos-suburb-orile-iju/
Despite being surrounded by Oko Oba and Red House Police Station, the residents have been compelled to accept their fate, as the crime rate in that area increases every day.
Newsroom‘s correspondent who visited the community learnt that it is not out of place for Indian hemp smokers, fraudsters, serial rapists, and cultists, who carry out their activities not only in the midnight but broad daylight.
According to a resident who preferred to remain anonymous, security operatives most especially the policemen, comes into the community every Friday with stern faces and after a few hours of patrolling the area, they depart and everything returns to the abnormal normal. It was gathered that in rare cases that arrests are made, the misfits are soon seen back in the neighbourhood, continuing their reign of terror.
The community youths leader who identified himself as Akeem said, “I really don’t have the right words to describe the nature of criminalism in my area. The area houses all sorts of criminals. Our community is now where fraudsters have turned to a base, those that have been declared wanted outside now lives in our community.”
Akeem also revealed that residents had taken certain steps to stop the menace, but to no avail. “We have written petitions, there are no traces of anything so far. Personally, I went to the task force to submit a petition but it leads to nothing, we have even offered a bribe to some policemen. Yet, nothing has happened. Policemen come every Friday, but they only come to collect money.”
Newsroom further learnt that there is a local woman who provides all manner of illicit drugs in the community. The woman simply identified as ‘Iya Modina‘, is said to have grown up in the area and has been in the sale of marijuana, codeine and other drugs for a long time.
Despite the common knowledge of her trade, Akeem informed us that the woman has never been arrested or questioned by police. Even those that smoke at her place do so comfortably as if it’s normal.”
“It has now even turned to cultists war in my area now. Eiye and Aye cult groups are currently fighting. As a matter of fact, several people have been injured already. They have become so many that we can’t go out in the night again. Our kids can’t go out because of rape. There are many unreported cases of rape,” Akeem added.
The traditional leader of the area, Alhaji Kamoru Adesina Balogun, Baale of Orile Iju told us of steps have been taken by the community leaders, to make it safe.
Balogun said, “I have done several things like writing petitions amongst other things as a community leader. I and some landlords have personally gone to chase these people away, they are just too much and still, they came back.”
Balogun identified one Gani who is also known as Surutu, as the leader of the pickpockets and notorious thieves of the area. Balogun said, “Gani is a very big thief, many people have been robbed and lost their valuables to him and his gang members.”
Addressing the rumour making rounds about bringing a ‘union park’ for tricyclists in the community, Balogun said he knows nothing about it. According to him, if such development is coming into the community there is no way he would not be aware.
Efforts to reach both the police and local government officials proved abortive as they refused to speak to us as soon as we identified ourselves as journalists.

Cc lalasticlala Mynd44 This particular area is notorious. They have got thieves, fraudsters, Indian hemp sellers and all manners of miscreants. The CDA led by Wahab is useless and the Baale of the community is a member of NURTW. Many innocent people have been duped, some were raped and robbed. You see them smoke weed in broad day light. The police officers who come there from Red House and Area G only come to collect bribe. They come every Friday. Government needs to beam its flashlight to that particular area and rid of criminals. In addition, it is another breeding ground for cultists. Eye boys, Aye boys and Buca boys have fought times without number. The recent clash had over 4 people stabbed. The Baale is clueless as well as the CDA. |

Politics › Special Letter To PMB: Before You Criticize Obasanjo by Simpledude0847(op): 4:22pm On Jan 24, 2018 |
If former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, were to be a boxer, his name would have been mentioned in the realms of the greatest like Joe Louis, Mohammed Ali and Rocky Marciano. He has had his nose bloodied a lot of times, notably losing out in his infamous third term agenda plan and his many failed attempts to win Lagos state for the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) while in power. He can be a petty politician when he wants to but he is still regarded as a gladiator and a force in Nigerian politics.
His special letter to President Buhari yesterday has once again put him in the spotlight, just like the letter he wrote to the then former President, Goodluck Jonathan. In this particular letter, Obasanjo advised his 'brother’ Buhari not to seek a second term in office as he has failed the whole nation. Obasanjo, in his usual element, pointed out 11 key areas Buhari has failed: Poverty, insecurity, nepotism, gross dereliction of duty, lack of progress and hope for the future, lack of national cohesion, poor management of internal politics, widening inequality, general poor performance in government, blood in the land and condonation and encouragement of misdeeds.
There should be a rethink from the camp of the presidency and his self-serving Ministers ( as Obasanjo rightly labels them) after OBJ joined the list of the high profile repentant supporters who have grown tired of the many excuses and buck-passing of Buhari's administration. Dele Momodu, Father Mbaka, Wole Soyinka, Tunde Bakare and now, Olusegun Obasanjo – the list is gradually growing.
Before you criticize him and call him a hypocrite who failed to remove the log in his own eyes but wants to take away the splinter in that of another, you might as well visit the August 27, 1985, speech by Ibrahim Babangida after Buhari and Tunde Idiagbon were ousted from power by a military coup de tat.
Babangida mentioned 'denigration of hope, mismanagement of political leadership, general deterioration in the standard of living, rigidness and uncompromising in his (Buhari) attitudes to issues of national significance, alienation from the people, issue of political detainees (abuse of fundamental human rights) and unemployment’ as the reason for the military intervention.
These were the exact words: "When in December 1983, the former military leadership, headed by Major-General Muhammadu Buhari, assumed the reins of government, its accession was heralded in the history of this country. With the nation at the mercy of political misdirection and on the brink of economic collapse, a new sense of hope was created in the minds of every Nigerian.
Since January 1984, however, we have witnessed a systematic denigration of that hope. It was stated then that mismanagement of political leadership and a general deterioration in the standard of living, which had subjected the common man to intolerable suffering, were the reasons for the intervention.
Nigerians have since then been under a regime that continued with those trends. Events today indicate that most of the reasons which justified the military takeover of government from the civilians still persist.
The initial objectives were betrayed and fundamental changes do not appear on the horizon. Because the present state of uncertainty, suppression and stagnation resulted from the perpetration of a small group, the Nigerian Armed Forces could not as a part of that government be unfairly committed to taking responsibility for failure. Our dedication to the cause of ensuring that our nation remains a united entity worthy of respect and capable of functioning as a viable and credible part of the international community dictated the need to arrest the situation. Let me at this point attempt to make you understand the premise upon which it became necessary to change the leadership. The principles of discussions, consultation and co-operation which should have guided decision-making process of the Supreme Military Council and the Federal Executive Council were disregarded soon after the government settled down in 1984. Where some of us thought it appropriate to give a little more time, anticipating a conducive atmosphere that would develop, in which affairs of state could be attended to with a greater sense of responsibility, it became increasingly clear that such expectations could not be fulfilled.
Regrettably, it turned out that Major-General Muhammadu Buhari was too rigid and uncompromising in his attitudes to issues of national significance. Efforts to make him understand that a diverse polity like Nigeria required recognition and appreciation of differences in both cultural and individual perceptions, only served to aggravate these attitudes.
The last twenty months have not witnessed any significant changes in the national economy. Contrary to expectations, we have so far been subjected to a steady deterioration in the general standard of living; and intolerable suffering by the ordinary Nigerians have risen higher, scarcity of commodities has increased, hospitals still remain mere consulting clinics, while educational institutions are on the brink of decay. Unemployment has stretched to critical dimensions."
This killer punch by the heavyweight politician (Obasanjo) that he is couldn’t have come at a better time than now. The country clearly needs a new direction if we are to survive as a nation and it so clear that the All Progressive Congress (APC) at the Federal level cannot provide the much-needed direction the country urgently needs.

Prophecies From the Man of God, Pastor Benny Hinn for Nigeria.
God is sending an anointing for authority. God is exalting His name in the nation, Nigeria. God will do it in the next few weeks. God is going to bring change into the political system of Nigeria.
Fast for 3 weeks and when you fast, target the individuals you want to see removed. This time, we must take the kingdom by force. Target the individuals by name and position. No nation is stronger than the anointing of God. No nation is stronger than the spiritual forces in it.
Words are powerful but our words are more powerful. The church is going to affect the economy of Nigeria positively. LoveWorld is going to plough the mentality of the politicians in Abuja. We will pray for prosperity to rest in Nigeria and all power that is not of God will be defeated.
There's going to be wealth transfer from the sinners to the Children of God. There's been six wealth transfers already recorded in the Bible, and we are No. 7 on our way to heaven. Hallelujah!! . He has given us the temporary solution and this is what I expected from the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) but unfortunately, they are too enmeshed in politics. Christians should fast and people will marvel at the outcome. It is so simple |

stephanie11: @POLITICSNGR
Ex-president, Olusegun Obasanjo has in a 13-page Scathing statement called on the president of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari to bury any plans of recontesting in 2019.
Obasanjo, in a special press statement obtained by PoliticsNGR, titled “The Way Out: A Clarion Call for Coalition for Nigeria Movement”, urged President Buhari to "honourably dismount from the Horse" and join the league of the country’s former leaders whose “experience, influence, wisdom, and outreach can be deployed on the sideline for the good of the country.”
Obasanjo disclosed that he feels disappointed with Buhari's performance. OBJ also wrote a similar letter in 2013 against President Goodluck Jonathan, wrote; “Even the horse rider then, with whom I maintain very cordial, happy and social relationship today has come to realise his mistakes and regretted it publicly and I admire his courage and forthrightness in this regard,”.
“He has a role to play on the sideline for the good of Nigeria, Africa, and humanity and I will see him as a partner in playing such a role nationally and internationally, but not as a horse rider in Nigeria again.”
“The lice of poor performance in government – poverty, insecurity, poor economic management, nepotism, gross dereliction of duty, condonation of misdeed – if not outright encouragement of it, lack of progress and hope for the future, lack of national cohesion and poor management of internal political dynamics and widening inequality – are very much with us today,” he wrote.
“With such lice of general and specific poor performance and crying poverty with us, our fingers will not be dry of ‘blood’,” he added.
OBJ thanked Buhari for the way he handled the Boko Haram crisis but pointed out that he failed to be efficient in other areas. He admitted knowing that Buhari was weak in handling the economy, he went ahead and voted for him because at the time “it was a matter of ‘any option but Jonathan’” and because he thought Mr Buhari would appoint qualified Nigerians to help out in that area.
He slammed Mr Buhari for turning a blind eye to corruption within his government saying it amounted to condonation and cover-up saying whoever is “going to justice must be with clean hands.”
He also berated Mr Buhari for allowing the clashes between herdsmen and farmers to go “sour” and messy saying the endorsement of the President by some governors to seek re-election barely 24 hours after 73 people who were killed by herdsmen in Benue State were given mass burial was “a sad symptom of insensitivity and callousness.”
But Mr. Obasanjo reserved his harshest words for what he described as Mr. Buhari’s clannishness, lack of understanding of the dynamics of politics, and his tendencies to pass the buck of his government’s inadequacies to the immediate past administration.
“But there are three other areas where President Buhari has come out more glaringly than most of us thought we knew about him. One is nepotic deployment bordering on clannishness and inability to bring discipline to bear on errant members of his nepotic court. This has grave consequences on performance of his government to the detriment of the nation. It would appear that national interest was being sacrificed on the altar of nepotic interest. What does one make of a case like that of Maina: collusion, condonation, ineptitude, incompetence, dereliction of responsibility or kinship and friendship on the part of those who should have taken visible and deterrent disciplinary action? How many similar cases are buried, ignored or covered up and not yet in the glare of the media and the public?
“The second is his poor understanding of the dynamics of internal politics. This has led to wittingly or unwittingly making the nation more divided and inequality has widened and become more pronounced. It also has effect on general national security.
“The third is passing the buck. For instance, blaming the Governor of the Central Bank for devaluation of the naira by 70% or so and blaming past governments for it, is to say the least, not accepting one’s own responsibility. Let nobody deceive us, economy feeds on politics and because our politics is depressing, our economy is even more depressing today. If things were good, President Buhari would not need to come in. He was voted to fix things that were bad and not engage in the blame game.”
Buhari and the APC not the Solution to Nigeria's Problem
Mr Obasanjo thus argued that neither Mr Buhari nor his party, the All Progressives Congress hold the solution to the country’s problems. He suggested that Mr Buhari was not healthy enough to withstand the rigour associated with running a country like Nigeria neither does his party capable of providing the answer needed to sail the country through its difficulties.
Mr Obasanjo said Buhari should step down at the end of his first term with honour and dignity and attend to his health and should not listen to the his “self-serving so-called adviserswho would claim that they love him more than God loves him and that without him, there would be no Nigeria say.”
“President Buhari needs a dignified and honourable dismount from the horse. He needs to have time to reflect, refurbish physically and recoup and after appropriate rest, once again, join the stock of Nigerian leaders whose experience, influence, wisdom and outreach can be deployed on the side line for the good of the country. His place in history is already assured. Without impaired health and strain of age, running the affairs of Nigeria is a 25/7 affair, not 24/7.
“I only appeal to brother Buhari to consider a deserved rest at this point in time and at this age. I continue to wish him robust health to enjoy his retirement from active public service. President Buhari does not necessarily need to heed my advice. But whether or not he heeds it, Nigeria needs to move on and move forward,” he said.
“I have had occasion in the past to say that the two main political parties – APC and PDP – were wobbling. I must reiterate that nothing has happened to convince me otherwise. If anything, I am reinforced in my conviction. The recent show of PDP must give grave and great concern to lovers of Nigeria.
“To claim, as has been credited to the chief kingmaker of PDP, that for procuring the Supreme Court judgement for his faction of the Party, he must dictate the tune all the way and this is indeed fraught with danger.
“If neither APC nor PDP is a worthy horse to ride to lead Nigeria at this crucial and critical time, what then do we do? Remember Farooq Kperogi, an Associate Professor at the Kennesaw State University, Georgia, United States, calls it “a cruel Hobson’s choice; it’s like a choice between six and half a dozen, between evil and evil. Any selection or deflection would be a distinction without a difference.” We cannot just sit down lamenting and wringing our hands desperately and hopelessly.
Coalition of Nigerians
Having ruled out the PDP and the ruling APC of possessing the panacea to the malaise that ails the country, Mr Obasanjo therefore called for a movement he termed Coalition of Nigeria, which he offered to be a part of, to wrest power from the present ruling class and lead the country into the path of rebirth.
“We can collectively save ourselves from the position we find ourselves. It will not come through self-pity, fruitless complaint or protest but through constructive and positive engagement and collective action for the good of our nation and ourselves and our children and their children. We need moral re-armament and engaging togetherness of people of like-mind and goodwill to come solidly together to lift Nigeria up. This is no time for trading blames or embarking on futile argument and neither should we accept untenable excuses for non-performance.
“Let us accept that the present administration has done what it can do to the limit of its ability, aptitude and understanding. Let the administration and its political party platform agree with the rest of us that what they have done and what they are capable of doing is not good enough for us. They have given as best as they have and as best as they can give. Nigeria deserves and urgently needs better than what they have given or what we know they are capable of giving. To ask them to give more will be unrealistic and will only sentence Nigeria to a prison term of four years if not destroy it beyond the possibility of an early recovery and substantial growth.
“The development and modernization of our country and society must be anchored and sustained on dynamic Nigerian culture, enduring values and an enchanting Nigerian dream. We must have abiding faith in our country and its role and place within the comity of nations. Today, Nigeria needs all hands on deck. All hands of men and women of goodwill must be on deck. We need all hands to move our country forward.
“We need a Coalition for Nigeria, CN. Such a Movement at this juncture needs not be a political party but one to which all well-meaning Nigerians can belong. That Movement must be a coalition for democracy, good governance, social and economic well-being and progress. Coalition to salvage and redeem our country. You can count me with such a Movement. Last time, we asked, prayed and worked for change and God granted our request. This time, we must ask, pray and work for change with unity, security and progress. And God will again grant us. Of course, nothing should stop such a Movement from satisfying conditions for fielding candidates for elections. But if at any stage the Movement wishes to metamorphose into candidate-sponsoring Movement for elections, I will bow out of the Movement because I will continue to maintain my non-partisan position. Coalition for Nigeria must have its headquarters in Abuja.
“This Coalition for Nigeria will be a Movement that will drive Nigeria up and forward. It must have a pride of place for all Nigerians, particularly for our youth and our women. It is a coalition of hope for all Nigerians for speedy, quality and equal development, security, unity, prosperity and progress. It is a coalition to banish poverty, insecurity and despair. Our country must not be oblivious to concomitant danger around, outside and ahead. Coalition for Nigeria must be a Movement to break new ground in building a united country, a socially-cohesive and moderately prosperous society with equity, equality of opportunity, justice and a dynamic and progressive economy that is self-reliant and takes active part in global division of labour and international decision-making.
“The Movement must work out the path of development and the trajectory of development in speed, quality and equality in the short- medium- and long-term for Nigeria on the basis of sustainability, stability, predictability, credibility, security, cooperation and prosperity with diminishing inequality. What is called for is love, commitment and interest in our country, not in self, friends and kinship alone but particularly love, compassion and interest in the poor, underprivileged and downtrodden.

IT’S TOO EARLY TO DISMISS CLEANER LAGOS INITIATIVE AS FAILURE - CIVIL SOCIETY GROUP …Says Call For Termination Of Visionscape’s Contract Hasty, Irresponsible
A civil society group, Greater Lagos Youths (GLY), on Tuesday faulted the call for the termination of a contract signed by the Lagos State Government with an environmental utility group, Visionscape Sanitation Solutions, saying it was too early in the day to dismiss the Cleaner Lagos Initiative (CLI) as a failure.
GLY, which is an amalgamation of over 60 youths’ groups drawn from across the 57 Local Government and Local Council Development Areas of Lagos State, said the call was not only misguided but hasty and irresponsible.
A group, Environmental Rights Action/Friends of the Earth Nigeria (ERA/FoEN), had asked the State Government to terminate the contract with Visionscape, alleging unsatisfactory handling of waste in the State.
But GLY, in a statement by its National President, Kayode Gbadamosi, condemned the position of the group, stating that it was pretending to serve the interest of the larger society, while in reality it was doing the hatchet job for it's paymasters to service interests which were at variance with the health and sanity of Lagos State.
According to GLY, “Let it be placed on record that we are not fooled by the call from this group which is akin to the voice of Jacob but the hand of Esau because the breeze has blown and we have seen the rump of the fowl. Also, it is not unlikely that the resurgence of heaps of waste across the State is the handiwork of saboteurs who have now being complemented by the irrational call for its termination.
“For our information and education, Visionscape Sanitation Solutions is a tested and trusted environmental concern which has proved its mettle in its area of competence in over 13 countries across the globe, so what is this group talking about?”, GLY queried.
The group said the CLI was introduced to address the challenges in the environmental sector with the focus of aligning the State with top cities in the world having effective and efficient waste management system.
“It is a known fact that the former waste management system in Lagos was fraught with a lot of drawbacks that is not in sync with the status of the state as a mega city by the deployment of outdated and faulty compactors which were always breaking down; the short supply of personnel, etc. All these hindered efficient waste management system and constituted environmental hazards across the state.
“However, with the coming on board of Visionscape Sanitation Solutions, we are beginning to witness a breath of fresh air in the waste management system through the transformation of waste transfer loading stations across the state, beginning with the Tapa Transfer Loading Station while the one in Oshodi is nearing completion. The Ogudu Waste Depot has been completed and the company is currently working on the Epe Landfill, which will be the first Engineered Sanitary Landfill in West Africa, among others.
“Under the CLI, there are provisions to collect, recycle and re-engineer waste in line with global best practices. Visionscape is deploying brand new compactors, waste bins and employing thousands of people in the waste management value-chain.
“Therefore, it is hasty, mischievous and irresponsible for any group to call for the cancellation of Visionscape Sanitation Solutions interventions in waste management system when it's a fact that the challenges of the waste system on ground is not unusual in a transition period of change as promoters and beneficiaries of the old order will be resistant to change and will employ any means necessary to maintain the status quo,” GLY said.

Recall that in the beginning of the year, the former Minister declared she will be campaigning against APC and PDP for the 2019 election. She believes that it is time for fresh politicians to be given the chance to rule instead of the recycled old politicians.
The green card movement championed by President Buhari's loyalists is geared towards ensuring that Nigerians keep President Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo in office in 2019.

This trend is gradually on the rise and it has raised certain questions that must be addressed. One, do people really date who they can't get married to? What do these folks discuss while dating? Is it just to knack, flex and all that? I see no reason why get serious and lead someone you cant get married to on in a relationship. This does not excuse any gender though. In addition to that, most guys are really scared of responsibility. How many guys really want to settle down with all the baggage that comes with it? Since the guys are not taking the initiative, the ladies have decided to take the bull by the horn, albeit in a wrong manner. When dating, there is need to be absolutely sure that both parties are on the same page on issues of marriage. I have heard girls say that they can't get married to the guys they are dating and vice versa. One of my friends proposed last year to a lady, she accepted and two days later, she returned the ring saying she wasn't really ready. I don't blame her though, my friend wasn't even ready either. Some are saying why would the guy accept because he isn't ready to foot the bill. It still bears down to responsibility. When wont we get to foot bills? It is high time men understood this fact - We are meant to be the head and we should strive to be that... |

Sometimes, we just need to be human. That is commendable but petty on the side of Seyi Law. Also, Kemi Olunloyo deserved that pettiness. Maybe others like her would learn as the tides could turn anytime |

This is an eyesore. It is indeed unbelievable as the lady said in the video. Lagos is dirty! But is the government folding its hands? No! I am sure Akinwunmi Ambode won't be happy with this. Since the video is online, I want to also believe those concerned would act fast. As the people, we also have roles to play. They have either got Iya Loja / Baba Loja in that market. They should have brought this to the attention of those concerned. How do they mover around that place sef? The stench go dey killing |

Commercial banks operating in the country have been accused of deliberately flooding the market with dirty Naira notes, which have become an eyesore to citizens.
This is mainly seen in the N100 notes.
At several Automated Teller Machines (ATM) spread across the country, customers are given mutilated notes, a thing that has become a source of worry to many.
Acting Director of Corporate Communications at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr Isaac Okoroafor, while commenting on the issue, also accused the banks of hoarding new notes.
He said commercial banks in the country receive enough new notes and wondered why they are not being circulated.
The CBN spokesman absolved the apex bank from the debacle, pushing it to the commercial banks. He said the banks were supposed to employ people to do the sorting for them, but they refused in order to avoid the cost of employing personnel for this.
“Instead of bringing them to us sorted, the banks bring them unsorted. Then we started charging them N12,000 per box. A box of N1000 notes contains N10 million worth. So, a box of N500 notes is N5 million in that order. So, in a bid to avoid cost, they preferred to re-circulate old and mutilated notes,” Mr Okoroafor said.
On why so many mutilated Naira notes are still in circulation, CBN image maker claimed that people handle these notes badly, making them unable to get to their lifespan anymore.
He said for the lower denomination notes, they have a higher velocity of circulation.
“What that means is that you use it more often and as you use it in exchange, it gets worn out and gets torn more frequently. So, that also creates another problem.”
https://www.businesspost.ng/2018/01/10/banks-deliberately-flood-market-dirty-naira-notes-cbn/ If CBN cannot talk to them is it we Nigerians they will listen to? The same banks that have refused to stop the outrageous monthly deductions from accounts despite the apex bank's directive. |
