Professor Sadiq Suleiman Wali was General Sani Abacha’s personal doctor. Professor Wali spoke to the press, revealing the details of Abacha’s sudden death seventeen years after his mysterious demise. Sani Abacha’s sudden death caused lots of rumours An event in 1998 changed the Nigerian history. By June 1998, Sani Abacha had ruled Nigeria for almost five years. Isolated by the West, Abacha had promised democratic elections and a transition to civilian rule by October 1998, but with just months to polls, all the political parties nominated General Abacha as their candidate for president. Professor Sadiq Suleiman Wali was General Sani Abacha’s personal doctor. Professor Wali describes Abacha as “a quiet person, calm person. He could be really firm on some issues, but normally he didn’t talk much”. Professor Wali has served as physician to the three previous Nigerian heads of state after being reluctantly recruited to that role in the early 1980-s. He considered himself politically neutral and lived outside the sprawling heavily guarded presidential complex known as Aso Rock in the capital Abuja. But he was a fixture in the presidential entourage. Professor Wali says Abacha’s health was OK just before his death. “Abacha was generally healthy though he had some health issues, he was treated, he’s responded [to that treatment] very well. He didn’t have any heart-related diseases at that time.” On the 7 of June, 1998 Wali’d been with Abacha, as he hosted the Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat and all seemed well. The next morning General Sani Abacha was due to fly to the OAU summit being held in Burkina-Faso and professor Wali was due to go with him. Professor Wali recounts that “around 6 am I had a phone call from his security officers, and they said, “please come, come to the villa, come urgently!” Before I even could get ready, they came and picked me. I had no idea what it all was about.” The car carrying the doctor sped towards the presidential villa through a special entrance – a shortcut which only the president was allowed to use. The doctor realised something was seriously wrong. “I arrived then I saw chief security there and he said “doctor come in, please, come in!” We all rushed and I just saw the president. There was another doctor who came earlier, resuscitating him. Abacha was in the sitting room. He was on the couch. He was in his normal work clothes. I didn’t panic. I’ve seen a lot of serious problems before in my practice, but to affect him was very tough, definitely. I joined and we did as much as we could to resuscitate him. But I realised that he was dead because he was fuming. We just continued resuscitation and even injected some things, but it didn’t work.” After 40 minutes trying to resuscitate the stricken general, Professor Wali said General Abacha had died. “I said, sorry – there’s nothing we can do”. There was no immediate public announcement, in a country prone to coups, Abacha’s head of security first increased the guard around the presidential complex and then called the heads of the armed forces to gather to decide on his replacement. “Immediately the security officer took over, and he invited all the service chiefs to come to Abuja, by then most of them were based in Lagos.” says doctor Wali. When the service chiefs arrived, some of them asked to see the body to pay their respect to their former leader. “They wanted to make sure, that he is dead. And some of them were crying” – tells Wali. Professor informed the family of what have happened. Obviously, the sudden death of an apparently healthy head of state raised a few questions. Professor Wali was determined that there should be an autopsy to find out what caused the sudden heart attack. After much deliberating, the family declined, preferring the quick burial in line with Islamic tradition. But the doctor was determined to find some clues as to what have happened. “I still try to take some samples of blood and urine and hair and things like that, just thinking for the future chemical tests,” Professor Wali said, adding that “it’s very difficult to say [whether he died of natural causes]. What I can see. The blood test we did, has shown some raised cardiac enzymes [proteins that are released into the blood by dying heart muscles].That why we thought maybe it was cardiac attack.” Every Nigerian has his own theory about what happened to General Abacha. There are rumours that he has been poisoned, or that he spent a night entertaining young ladies. Professor Wali conmented on those rumours that “when I entered [Abacha’s premises], there were no ladies. It might be true but I did not see them. Concerning the poison, as I said no post-mortem has been done, so I couldn’t assure whether he was poisoned or it was a heart attack.” While the generals deliberated on who would take over, plans were made to take Abacha’s body in his hometown of Kano later that day. It was decided to finally tell the public what had happened. But the mystery around Abacha’s death still remains seventeen years after his sudden and unexpected demise. A huge birthday celebration is set to be held in South Africa on Friday 12th June as Prophet TB Joshua turns 52. An announcement posted on Joshua’s official Facebook page revealed that award-winning US Gospel Artist Vashawn Mitchell would be among those performing at the event. The Nigerian cleric’s popularity in Southern Africa has shown no signs of waning, despite the tragic building collapse that claimed the lives of 84 South Africans in his church last year. Indeed, family members of those who lost their lives and survivors of the incident are among those organising the celebration for Joshua, alongside ‘The SCOAN Family in Southern Africa’. Joshua has uncannily not appeared in public since his crusade in Mexico last month. It was announced on his Christian network Emmanuel TV yesterday that the cleric had arrived back in Nigeria over a week ago but was “waiting for God's command on what to do next”. Speculations are rife that Joshua may soon be leaving Nigerian shores on a more permanent basis, fuelled further by the message yesterday which stipulated no birthday celebration would be held within Nigeria.

Emmanuel Adebayor has launched another verbal attack on his family on Facebook, claiming that his brother Kola held a knife to his throat in an attempt to gain money from the Togolese striker. The Tottenham Hotspur player has lifted the lid on his turbulent early life, giving his side of a tale of greed in candid, successive posts on Facebook. Among the accusations in his first 877-word diatribe were that his mother was obsessed with money and brother Rotimi stole 21 mobile phones from a football academy Adebayor had helped him get into. The second 1,041-word post included allegations that Rotimi stole football shirts that Adebayor been given by the great Zinedine Zidane and the late Marc- Vivien Foé, the Cameroon international who died of a cardiac arrest during a match. Emmanuel Adebayor (right) pictured with his brother Rotimi The rants on Facebook have alarmed Spurs, who fear they compromise manager Mauricio Pochettino's chances of getting the 31-year-old's £100,000-a-week salary off the wage bill this summer. Adebayor claims that he his brothers Kola and Peter visited him while he was playing for Monaco and wanted money. "I was very tired and decided to go take a nap" Adebayor writes. "I woke up and a knife was held to my throat. As I opened my eyes, both of my brothers were there. They were shouting and they claimed that I was wasting their time. Peter was going mad and Kola was supporting. "I asked them: 'Is this the only way to solve thisissue? If yes, then kill me and take the money.' Adebayor also reveals how much the family problems have weighed down on him. "Many times I wanted to give up," he writes. "Ask my sister Iyabo Adebayor how many times I have called and was ready to commit suicide." Emmanuel Adebayor and his mother Here is Adebayor's Facebook post in all its 1600-word glory: SEA, if I decide to bring out the Part 3 today, it is because my brother @Kola Adebayor and my other siblings have decided to talk about our family issues on social medias, through letters to my club, radios…I could write an autobiography and sell it but I decided to share with you here. 25 years ago, my big older brother Kola went to Germany and he became the hope of our family. We all thought he could change the way we were living. Years after he left Togo, we still had no electricity and no phones. If he wanted to talk to us, he would call the Atlantic Hotel that was very close to our house. We would then run to the hotel reception and talk to him. When I got the opportunity to go play football in France for the first time, we needed money to for the flight tickets and other expenses. My brother was nowhere to be found. Only God knows what he was doing in Germany. When I arrived in France, I did all the paperwork with my team and they allowed me to stay in the academy. A few months later, my brother wanted to come visit me. I was running out of money and I was living at the academy. Therefore, I had to borrow money so I could pay for his hotel. At that time, my teammate Sega N’diaye from Cameroon was kind enough to lend me some money. I also had to borrow some more money because I had to give my brother some money for his trip back toGermany. Keep in mind he is my older brother. A couple years later, things started to get better. Thank God, I signed a contract with Metz. Since then, my brother would contact me whenever it was time to pay his bills. Sometimes, he would say his son is sick… I had to get used to all this. Again, I was lucky enough to get an offer from Monaco and I signed for the football club. One day, Kola and the late Peter Adebayor came to visit me in Monaco. My two brothers did not let me know they were coming. Someone said “blood is thicker than water” so I took them in. They arrived early in the morning and I was on my way to training. When I came back home, we had a discussion and they wanted to start a car business. Obviously, it involves a lot of money. I told them that I could help them out as soon as I get paid next. At that time, Thierry Mangwa was staying in my apartment because he was struggling with some personal issues and needed a place to stay. One day, I came back from training and he was crying. He never told me why. My brothers could also not explain. Another day, one of my friends Padjoe came to visit me and as he was leaving the house, I believe I offered him about €500. My brother Kola noticed that and was very upset. He was trying to understand why I gave my friend some money right away but not him. My reason was very simple; the money he (Kola) needed was a huge amount of money that I did not carry in my house. We went on and had an argument about it. Another day, after training…I was very tired and decided to go take a nap. I woke up and a knife was held to my throat. As I opened my eyes, both of my brothers were there. They were shouting and they claimed that I was wasting their time. Peter was going mad and Kola was supporting. I asked them: “Is this the only way to solve this issue? I yes, then kill me and take the money”. It’s only at that moment that he put the knife down. After all this, I found a way out of my own apartment and I called my parents. My mom suggested that I call the police. That was the only way for me to get back into my house safely… I had training the next day, by the way. So I did what my mom said. Police came and they settled down. Again, “blood is thicker than water”, so I let it go. A few days after, Peter went to visit one of Kola’s friends in Paris. That means I was left in the house with Kola; for my own safety, I found a way to get him the money as soon as I could. Only God knows how much I gave him that day.A few months after all this, I went back to Togo and I was surprised when my mom started to ask me why I called the police on my brothers, she continued and said I am the bad person in the family. That is another story I will leave for later…Every time I went back home, everyone kept asking me why my brother never visited after all these years. Immediately, I organized a flight for him and he came back to visit the family, at my own expenses. On April 22nd 2005, we received some bad news. I received a call and they announced that my father passed away. I was devastated. I called my big brother and told him that we all have to be there. Again I made sure there was a flight ticket ready for him. We all went back home and I took care of everything. A long time before my dad died, he was in the hospital one day and he asked me to make sure his funeral is not a moment of sadness. He wanted us to celebrate his life. I leave it to God to decide if the funeral I organized for my dad was what he wanted. The man who calls himself the “big man” in the family did not contribute to anything. But he still has the boldness to say I do not take care of this family. In 2006, I had another big opportunity to go play for Arsenal. Since then, my brother has started to come up with series of false accusations against me. On July 22nd, 2013 sad news hit us in the family. My brother Peter Adebayor passed away. His death was sad and I was affected by it. One thing I find difficult to swallow today is that Kola was accusing me of Peter’s death. He is saying that the shop I opened for Peter was not good enough. He kept texting saying that my career would be destroyed. I did everything for Peter when he was alive, I brought him to Metz, and Monaco with me. What can Kola say that he has done for Peter? Nothing. The man did not even show up at the funeral even after all the money I sent for the trip back home. He is saying that I also made my mom suffer, but he forgot that when he was in Germany, at some point I was the one always by my mom’s side. As soon as I started to make a living with football, I did everything you could imagine for our mom. That is normal. But my brother is never satisfied. He said I bought a shitty car for my mom. Why can’t he buy a better one? All I want from him is to take his responsibilities. Since I am not doing it right, he should show the example as a big brother. He has been in Germany for more than 20 years, but he never brought our mother there to visit. Even to go back home for a visit is another struggle. All he keeps saying is that my father said I should build a house for each one of them. I don’t think my father said that. Does that even make sense for him or anyone? As a big brother, he is supposed to be doing all that I am doing for the family. He should stop hiding and take his responsibilities. When he came to Europe, he was young enough to become a football player too. Anyways, some people are drivers here but they are able to take care of their families. They even bring their parents and other family members. Why has he not done anything like that but he keeps talking? As a matter fact, he should at least bring Rotimi, Bidemi or his own son Aziz here before talking about “taking care of the family”. Actions are louder than speeches. A lot of people are saying that I never went to school, but they forget that it is because we could not afford it. I never blamed my parents for that. But thank God, today I am able to speak more than 3 languages and I can send my daughter to school. I am proud of that. People can accuse me for not going to school, but in the end it is all about who you become and what you teach yourself. It is also about what life teaches you and what you learn from it. Many times I wanted to give up. Ask my sister Iyabo Adebayor how many times I have called and was ready to commit suicide? I kept these stories for years… But If I die, no one would know my story, no one would learn from it… Some people say I should keep these stories private, but someone has to sacrifice himself; someone has to talk about it. I know people would relate to my story and others would learn from it. For every one who knows me, I’d do anything for my country and my people. Final message from the younger brother to the older brother: Quit Smoking and Quit Drinking. That was my story. My brother, you have contested the Presidential elections 3 times in this country and in all these times, you have never asked me or my people at Shagari village to support your bid. It is very obvious why you can't do that. You don't have the courage after what you did to me. You truncated democracy with a dastardly coup and took away power from me.You humiliated me and made me to suffer, and you took away my opportunity to RULE Nigeria. You said you do not want democracy in Nigeria.. The same democracy you truncated, you are fighting hard to get with desperation and diabolical power. You have entered into unholy alliance with some known elements of disunity in the south but let me warn you. You will suffer hard in the hands of Tinubu and his political merchants who will use and dump you as they did to Nuhu. In 2011, you cried publicly when you lost election, and you made provocative and inciting statements that plunged this country into untoward unrest. You provoked our hot-blooded youths with war cries which erupted into post election violence, that brought Boko Haram into existence, over 500 innocent Nigerians died instantly, most of them youth corpers deployed from one of the unifying agencies of this country. Personally,I do not have a problem with your ambition. It is your arrogance that bothers me. If you cannot summon the courage to ask me and my family to vote for you because you know we would not,why do you think Nigerians would look kindly on your past record of destroying a progressing democratic institutions painfully put in place by some respected fathers of this nations like Awolowo and Azikiwe. No my brother. It is time to wake up from your delusion and do the needful if you still have some conscience. I am not writing this to you with vengeance intention. I am a practicing Muslim and we leave matters of vengeance to Allah. I write to you as a Nigerian, your brother and a statesman who is deeply concerned.Quit the presidential race now and save this country from the dangling sword of Damocles being menacingly wield by the crooks who surround you. This elections is not about you or President Goodluck Jonathan. It is about the unity of Nigeria which can only be assured by being fair. By this I mean, being fair to the people of Niger Delta. We can only do this by either re-electing Goodluck or substitute him with any of his kinsmen from the South- south as that can only count fair for a people who are entitled to 8 years in the office of the President. For the elders council in the north, we have come to the conclusion to work towards realizing that fairness. 4 years more is not eternity. It is not too much of a concession for us to make to move Nigeria forward as one indivisible and united country under one God. May Allah open your mind to see reason. God bless Nigeria. When safety and Africa are mentioned in the same sentence, it always appears like two ends of the rope. For a long time, the media has always portrayed Africa as a not-so-safe place. Frequent muggings, carjacking, robberies, petty theft, pick pockets and much more seem to rule the airwaves. Well, matter of fact is that the continent is safe. Being in one of the safest countries in Africa is the wish and dream of every single living African, while there are several places in Africa that can be classified as unsafe, there are also so many countries that would be regarded as safe where people move about freely conducting their businesses 10. Gambia Although it is not talked about so much, Gambia is actually ranked as one the safest countries not only in West Africa, but also in Africa. The people are generally friendly and quite hospitable, the systems work in the country, and you can walk in the late of the night feeling safe and secure. 9. Rwanda Rwanda came into the spotlight following the genocide that took place several years. This marked one of the darkest moments not only in Africa’s history, but also the whole world. Slowly, the country continues to heal and move on. Some of the glad tidings that have come from the new Rwanda are peace, improved security and safety. 8. Morocco Morocco is the only country from northern part of Africa to make it to the list of safest countries in the continent. Besides being surrounded by countries well known for rebellions, Morocco has continued to remain peaceful and safe for many years. This is achieved as a result of good governance, well established policies and also effective community policing. 7. Ethiopia Ethiopia will always hold a special place in history. Many people came to know of the country due to extreme famine, drought, and poverty. This led to the whole world joining hands to assist the country. Well, three decades later, the country is not only among the top 10 food secure countries in Africa, but also one of the safest. 6. Malawi Malawi hasn’t always been considered amongst the safe countries in Africa. In fact, more than a decade ago, it was experiencing some social, political as well as economic instability. This was pegged on the failing economy, political wrangles and much more. Fortunately, the economic turnaround improved the countries prospects further making the country quite safe. 5. Tanzania Tanzania is the only country from the East African region to make it to the list of the top 10 safest countries in Africa. The large country attributes its safeness to the “ujamaa” mentality that is rife in the country. The Swahili term “ujamaa” simply means communism. It is all about caring and showing concern for your neighbor. 4. Cote D’Ivoire When Cote Divoire also known as Ivory Coast is mentioned, one thing comes to mind, Cocoa. Besides priding itself in being the largest producer of cocoa beans globally, Ivory Coast boasts of being one of the safest countries in Africa. This always comes as a shock to many people considering it is surrounded by countries that are constantly experiencing instability. 3. Seychelles For a long time, Seychelles has always enjoyed peace. Rarely will bad stories be written about the country. There are several reasons that make the African state safe and peaceful. These include; well organized judicial system, strong adherence to human rights and freedom, cordial relationship between the citizens and the government and more. 2. Namibia It seems the safety wave is concentrated in the Southern part considering that Namibia neighbors Botswana. The country has indeed come a long way when it comes to matters of safety. A few decades ago, the country was nowhere near the top ten list. However, political will and good governance turned this around thus making it a haven of peace. 1. Botswana Botswana is undoubtedly one of the countries perceived to be most safe in the continent. This country located in the southern part of Africa has consistently enjoyed good publicity. Positive aspects of the country include a good infrastructure, political stability, stable currency, and much more. In addition, its strong judicial system always makes certain that rights and freedoms are fully protected. |
