The Cross River Government says it is awaiting results of blood samples of a patient who died at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) with symptoms of what appeared viral hemorrhagic fever.
Sunday Omini, Director of Public Health in the state Ministry of Health, said this on Thursday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Calabar.
Mr. Omini was reacting to media reports that a suspected Ebola patient died in UCTH on Wednesday.
“We are aware of the situation and we have got preliminary reports from the hospital, and we are all awaiting the result of the blood samples.
“But judging from the information I have received so far, I am 90 per cent sure that it is not Ebola.
“However, we are on top of the situation, there is no cause for alarm,” he said.
Meanwhile, the management of UCTH said it had informed all relevant agencies about the development, including the National Centre for Disease Control, Federal Ministry of Health and Cross River government.
This is contained in a statement issued by Dr Queenet Kalu, Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee (CMAG), on behalf of the Medical Director of the hospital.
The statement said the public would be informed adequately as soon as results of the blood samples were released, adding that the hospital management had quarantined identified contacts.
“Further information will be made available as soon as we receive the results of the samples sent for analysis,’’ it said.

The Accident and Emergency ward of the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, UCTH has been shut down following an Ebola Virus scare which resulted from the death of a patient at about 2pm on Wednesday, 7th October.

The unidentified patient who was brought in from Akpabuyo Local Government Area of Cross River State on Tuesday showed significant symptoms of the deadly Ebola Virus before he died.

He had high body temperature while he was vomiting, stooling and bleeding from nose at the same time.

A source said that the patient died shortly after body samples were taken from him for investigation adding that after the death, the accident and emergency ward was quarantined in order to curtail suspicion.

His statement:

A patient was brought in on Tuesday vomiting, stooling and bleeding from the nose and mouth. He had a high temperature. It was suspected that he had Haemorrhagic fever but it has not been confirmed. He died around 2pm and his body has been quarantined while the ward was shut down.

But another source who begged anonymity mentioned that the said patient was suspected to have died of Haemorrhagic fever. He, however said the state Ebola Emergency team was invited at about 6pm to take the sample of the dead suspect for further investigation.

When the Chairman of Medical Advisory Committee, who also doubles as the Deputy Chief Medical Director of UCTH, Dr. Queenet Kalu, was contacted, she confirmed the scare saying:

Yes, we had a patient that was suspected to have died of Haemorrhagic fever but it does not call for panic as everything is under control. There is no need for the public to be scared of EVD as it is not confirmed.

Kiesha Jenkins, 22, was ambushed by a group of men moments after she exited a car around 2.30 am, on Tuesday, October 6.
The men began to beat her and then shot her twice in the back, police said. Jenkins was rushed to the hospital where she later died.
Police are still on the hunt for the suspects, although they say it’s too soon to determine whether or not the incident was a hate crime or possible robbery.
“Kiesha was shot in the back around 2:30 am in North Philadelphia,” a spokeswoman for the Philadelphia Police Department confirmed. “She was known to the LGBTQ community as a transgender individual,” the spokeswoman said.
Police are treating the case as a homicide – not a hate crime – though that could change as the investigation continues, she added.
According to Huffington Post, at least 18 other transgender women have reportedly been killed in the US this year — and at least 16 of those victims, including Jenkins, were women of colour.
