what's the correlation between trust and eating together?  you could argue that eating together is actually a display of distrust which stems from a suspicion that someone in the group is out to poison the rest.

First of all, How the heck are ya? Where have you been?

Have you ever collected a bottle of water from a friend, drank from it without wiping the top off? It's very much like that.

The psychology behind it is this. . . one would be hard pressed to do harm to someone he's eat and drank with. Is that always the case? As far as I've experienced. . . yes. So next time a Hausa person asks to eat with him from the same plate, be honored. 

Forgot to add this. . . the gesture is coming from the offerer not the offeree, so you who are the one being invited to eat have nothing to lose, no? Why would he want to poison you and still eat from the same plate?

It's not that complicated, Hausas are simple folks. . . they either trust you or they don't. No corner, corner, wuru wuru, under G moves about them
