Foreign AffairsIn Major Concession, Mccain Gives Up On Michigan by Sisikill(op): 10:57pm On Oct 02, 2008
In major concession, McCain gives up on Michigan

WASHINGTON - Republican presidential candidate John McCain conceded battleground Michigan to the Democrats on Thursday, GOP officials said, a major retreat as he struggles to regain his footing in a campaign increasingly dominated by economic issues.

These officials said McCain was pulling staff and advertising out of the economically distressed Midwestern state. He also canceled a visit slated for next week. Michigan, with 17 electoral votes, voted for Democrat John Kerry in 2004, but Republicans had poured money into an effort to try to place it in their column this year.

The decision marked the first time either McCain or his Democratic rival, Barack Obama, has tacitly conceded a traditional battleground state in a race for the White House with little more than a month remaining.

In a campaign now unfolding across more than a dozen states, the decision allows McCain's resources to be sent to Ohio, Wisconsin, Florida and other more competitive states. But it also means Obama can shift money to other states like Virginia, Colorado and North Carolina where he is trying to eat into traditional Republican territory.

By pulling out of vote-rich Michigan, McCain conceded a large part of the electoral map in the heart of the industrial Midwest.

The move underscored McCain's troubles on the economy, which he has acknowledged is not his strongest subject. It also underscored his struggle to beat an opponent who has the money to compete in many states President Bush won four years ago. Polls show Obama has pulled ahead or tied McCain in many of those states.

Obama rejected public financing so he can spend as much as he can raise; McCain's direct spending is limited to $84 million in taxpayer money. But McCain is getting help from the Republican National Committee, which has plenty to spend to supplement McCain's campaign. The Democratic National Committee has not been as big a help for Obama, but his massive fundraising makes him rely less on the party.

As Nov. 4 approaches, both sides are adjusting their strategies daily to find the best state-by-state path to the 270 electoral votes needed for victory.
Along with giving up Michigan, a McCain aide said the campaign is opening a front in Maine, which Kerry won four years ago and which offers four electoral votes allocated in proportion to the vote. The Arizona senator's campaign checked advertising rates in media markets there this week.

Obama already has abandoned efforts in Alaska, Georgia and North Dakota, but the Democrat has succeeded in making traditional Republican strongholds Indiana, North Carolina and Virginia competitive. Both sides are battling it out in those states, where public polls show Obama ahead or tied.
The two campaigns are squaring off with increasing intensity in Colorado, Ohio, Florida, Iowa, Missouri, New Mexico, which Bush won in 2004, and Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and New Hampshire, which went to Kerry.

Obama also is making a limited effort in the traditional GOP bastion of Montana and McCain is going after Democratic-tilting Minnesota.

McCain had identified Michigan early on as a potential target, particularly in light of Obama's troubles with white working class voters in other Rust Belt primaries although he skipped Michigan because of a Democratic Party fight over its primary date and didn't set up a campaign organization there during the primary.

But Michigan posed other difficulties for McCain. It has a Democratic governor and the nation's highest annual average unemployment rate since 2006. McCain's 90 percent support in the Senate for the unpopular President Bush, a theme hammered by Obama, proved too much for the GOP nominee to overcome.

GOP strategists said those troubles became more acute for McCain in Michigan after the Wall Street collapse, and both public and private polls showed him sliding. On Wednesday night, the campaign decided that the $1 million a week it was spending in Michigan wasn't worth it with polls showing Obama approaching a double-digit lead, according to Republican insiders, who requested anonymity to avoid annoying the McCain campaign.

Word of McCain's pull out came as the vice presidential candidates, Republican Sarah Palin and Democrat Joe Biden, prepared for an evening debate in St. Louis and just before Obama took the stage for a rally at Michigan State University, his third event in the state in five days.

If the Illinois senator knew about McCain's plans, Obama didn't mention it and continued to criticize his rival's economic policies. "My opponents' philosophy isn't just wrongheaded, it reveals out how out of touch he really is," Obama told more than 15,000 gathered on a chilly fall afternoon.
McCain's decision didn't go over well with at least some Michigan Republicans.

"John McCain is our candidate," said Mike Bishop, the top-ranking Republican in the state Legislature. "We want him in Michigan. We want him to hear our issues."

TV/MoviesRe: Nollywood - Enough Already! Stop Embarrassing Us by Sisikill(op): 5:47pm On Oct 02, 2008
vescucci:
Plenty talk! Nollywood movies are 97% terrible. 2% are okay and only 1% are truly worth it. I was watching a local programme where this woman rates naija movies and she had a guest who made a movie named Rivals. The name sounds stupid like many a nigerian movie but once a small clip was played from the film and the guest (the producer and actress) gave a more detailed synopsis, I was impressed not only because it got an award at a film festival somewhere (I think Cannes and I think it won best foreign film or best african film) but because the idea was brilliant and the film-making was poetic. No use of big and flashy cars to denote wealth (it has always amazed me where they get people's homes to rent for their bollocks). The dialogue wasn't too bad. There, of course, were a fair share of flaws but I find flaws in almost every movie, including my personal favorites.

So this is the bottom line. I do not mince words.

The naija movies featured in IMDB are supposedly our 'best' if they aren't they're our top 5%. They do not compare to the worst movies, not only from the U. S. but from all over the globe. The chic trying to defend the industry writes well enough (no pun intended, I meant it like I said it) so I can assume you're very intelligent (no pun intended now either) so stop the feud with Sisi and admit naija movies are crap and we need to do something about it. My outlook has changed. If I have my way I'll do something about it with the help of a few of my friends. First when I finish my book I'll see about an adaptation. Seun, don't come here o. My book ain't worth 25 large. Drop your hatchet and call a spade a spade.
Vesc, quit the jokes! Those movies are supposed to be our best? That's why they are on IMDB? Oh my God!! Where can I get a brown paperbag to cover my head in shame!  embarassed embarassed

Scrapping "Nollywood" (I really hate that name but I have no other option) is not the solution. More serious minded professionals should get involved and tilt the balance. That way the gatecrashers and meddlesome interlopers will be relegated to the background where they rightly belong. Sure the ''pure water'' film makers will continue to make their 7 day movies but Nigerians are not dumb, it will be very easy to ignore the crappy movies and embrace the reasonable movies. Naija people sabi better things even though they love to get them through awufu  grin grin I watch Nigerian films but I go to Naijarules for recommendations. So far I haven't seen one that will make my brain explode. . .  grin

There are lots of good Nigerian movies out there (And I mean LOTS. . . plenty. . . Nyafu nyafu) but unfortunately, they get swallowed and overwhelmed by the numerous atrocious 3 day movies with the most horrendous production. I believe Kingsley Ogoro, Tade Ogidan, Izu Ojukwu are some of the few credible pros in the business. . . Tunde Kelani is up there too. I haven't seen his work but considering the magnitude of accolades he receives , I am convinced he's a 'top dog'.
You know why you don't see their work littered all over the place like dog poop? Because they take their time, they don't wake up one morning with an idea and start shooting by noon and done in time for dinner.

Good Grief! I don’t know if I should laugh or laugh some more at what I’m reading.

Let’s see if I get this straight. . .

Critiquing  Nollywood movies = Hating Nigeria
Critiquing Nollywood = Tribalism
Critiquing Nollywood = Jealousy
Critiquing Nollywood = Joblessness

Okay, laughing it is! Heaven help me! Can you get any more irrational? I don’t think so! No wonder it is all going to hell in a handbasket. Nollywood movie makers and their excuse makers need to wake up from the mediocrity slumber, grow a pair and stop whining like cry babies when people tell them the crappy movies the make are crappy.

Hollywood have their critics
Bollywood have their critics
Chinese Movie Industry have their critics
French Movie Industry have their critics
Croatian Movie Industry. . . albeit a small one because they don’t churn out movies every 30 seconds like a certain movie industry we are not allowed to critique, have their critics.

ALL are very successful production-wise unlike a certain crybaby movie industry we must not mention for fear we will be deafened with the noise of their cries. Instead of taking a page out of the other SUCCESFUL, LESS EMBARRASING Movie industries, they cuddle themselves, wiping their noses with their dirty hands, whining about hate, jealousy and tribalism.

As long as a certain apology of a movie industry continues to churn out nonsensical, incoherent, shoddy, bottom of the barrel, a 10 years old with a camera can do better than this, movies. There will always be critics. . .  deal with it!

Oh you are right about one thing. . . I am Jobless!! Do you know what that means?

I gots lots of tiiiiiime https://forum.surfthechannel.com/style_emoticons/default/spinchair.gif

Yeeeep! Time on my hands to do whatever. . . Like spend the day critiquing crappy, not much thought put into it movies made by so called movie makers who know nothing about the art of movie making and are only in it for money!

How do you like them apples cool

everyone discouraged her and told her not to marry him but she didn't listen to anyone

Her mother-in-law maltreats her

Her husband got so angry and told her to leave the house without her baby.

she later had a miscarriage

he refused to see my counsin(his wife)

My counsin forgave him and stayed in her father's house

when she went to his house to apologise he refused bluntly

she hasn't seen her baby ever since the husband told her not to return .
Patience is the KEY, yes he sounds like a heartless person but who knows what he is going through, maybe he is having problems at work or his business is not going well and he is lashing out. Often times, it's people we love who bear the brunt of our anger. Don't be surprised if he sends for her as soon as he gets everything under control.

We need to discard our western mentality, in Africa the father is the owner of the child and most of the time when things like this happen the children stay with the dads.

I'm sorry. . . get pleasure in other people's pain? You are Kidding right, take a look at the thread again and see who is getting pleasure from pain. One would have to be a Masochist to want to remain in a relationship where 1) She is has been told she is not good enough 2) She has been told she is not wanted 3) Her husband does not have an iota of respect for her 4) Her husband does not want to be seen with her 4) She works herself to the bone to keep a roof over her family's head yet gets insulted for it 5) Told her in every which way that he does not love 6) Her husband has no qualms flaunting the other woman in her  face. . . yet she says she wants to know what she can do.

People. . . even the Naija men I sometimes make fun of for their Lord of the manor attitude, have told her get it together, have some respect herself, be good to herself and what does she say. . . she can't coz she loves him.

Someone is getting pleasure from pain alright but it's not me. . . thank you very much!

E ya ni o je, ki ni jaye
Ewo gele yaya lo ri aya ti ko ni opolo

I'll even teach her how to dance the sugomu dance sef. . . not that I know what it is but I figure it won't be that hard, I mean all you have to do is pretend you don't have a brain and then try to dance.

Chei! I never thot the day will come where I will be telling someone to say this outside the context of a joke. Life is indeed full of surprises.

If you are not sure of what you stand for, you will perceive anything and anyone as a threat.

Question to Tribalist - Why does Pilgrim's testimony affect you like this? Is she making you doubt yourself? You know it's okay to have doubts, right? So instead of lashing out at the one who has shaken the foundation of your belief, why not ask her to help you sort yourself out. I'm sure she'll be more than happy to help out.

kiwi992:
Hey Tara,

Here's what to do.

Invite her to your marital home.  Cook a nice meal for all of you.  Your husband and child must be present too.  Once you've all finished eating, send your kid upstairs to his or her bedroom and to stay there.

After this, just go naked right in front of her (I mean complete starkers).  Whilst pointing to your boobs, say that those were what you used to feed the child with whom she had just shared a meal.  Ask her as to whether she would like her own child to be without a dad.  Make a big scene of it.  After this, you then order her to leave your husband alone, or the gods would descend on her.

As a Yoruba woman, she would know the significance of it and quickly leave your husband alone.  Trust me it works because Nigerian women do it.

His parents would be very upset with him to hear that you got naked in front of the mistress because they know what it means.  Even he would be shocked.

Good luck.

Excuse me but what is this you are saying? She should UnCloth in front of the woman? Are you kidding me? What purpose will that serve. . . no one is interested in her naked body, especially her husband. What she should do is BEG the other woman to get naked so she can see what her husband is enjoying. . . who knows, she might get lucky,  see something she can copy from the other woman. I hear minor surgeries don't require spending the night at the hospital, so she can go in the morning and have it done before lunch, by dinner she is perfect for her husband.

I'll even go as far as saying while she's got the woman in her home, she ask them to have sex in front of her so she can take notes. . . some pointers on how to please her husband. It's the least the refugee girlfriend can do now, after all she just eat dinner and knowing how nice Tara, she probably won't let refugee girl do the dishes like they make them do in the camp.
