US President Donald Trump will formally launch his re-election campaign later, after threatening to unleash a wave of mass deportations next week.

He tweeted that authorities will start "removing the millions of illegal aliens who have illicitly found their way into the United States".

The Republican president will make his case for a second term in office at an evening rally in Florida.

Early polls place Mr Trump behind some potential Democratic challengers.

"Going to be wild - See you later!" tweeted the president on Tuesday, hours before he was due to take to the stage in Orlando.

What did Trump say about deportations?
Mr Trump tweeted on Monday night that undocumented migrants in the US would be "removed as fast as they come in".

US Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) typically does not announce raids, and the agency's officials told US media they had been unaware the president would tweet about the plans.

Earlier this month, acting ICE Director Mark Morgan said authorities would target migrants who have received final orders of deportation, including families.

In his Monday night tweets, Mr Trump also contrasted Mexico's "strong immigration laws" - the product of a new agreement to avert US tariffs - with US Democratic border policies.

As a part of the deal, Mexico is deploying 6,000 National Guard personnel to its borders to crack down on Central American migration.

A senior Mexican official told the Associated Press news agency the number of migrants arriving at the US border had already dropped from 4,200 to 2,600 per day

CultureThe Underwater Indian Village That Emerges Once A Year by Skiddoamat(op): 9:25am On Jun 09, 2019
A village in the western Indian state of Goa is only visible for one month in a year - for the remaining 11 months, it disappears under water. And when the water recedes, its original residents, now settled elsewhere, come together to celebrate their home, reports Supriya Vohra.

The village of Curdi was nestled between two hills in the Western Ghats with the Salaulim river - a tributary of one of the major rivers in Goa - running through it.

It was once a thriving village in south-eastern Goa.

In 1986, the village as its residents knew it ceased to exist. The state's first dam was constructed and, as a consequence, the village was completely submerged.

But every year in May, the water recedes to reveal what is left of it.

Cracked earth, stumps of trees, eroded remnants of houses and religious structures, broken remains of household items, water canals in ruins, and miles of barren ground criss-crossing with water bodies.

The land used to be fertile and most of the village, whose population was around 3,000, lived off of it - they tilled paddy fields surrounded by coconut, cashew, mango and jackfruit trees.

Hindus, Muslims and Christians lived together. There was a main temple, several smaller temples, a chapel and a Muslim shrine. It was also the birthplace of the renowned classical vocalist Mogubai Kurdikar.

But things drastically changed after Goa was liberated from the Portuguese in 1961.

The first chief minister, Dayanand Bandodkar, visited the village with news about the construction of the state's first dam. He gathered all the residents and told them that it would benefit all of southern Goa.

"He said it will drown our village, but our sacrifice will be for the greater good," 75-year-old Gajanan Kurdikar, who has vivid memories of the meeting, says.

Mr Kurdikar and other residents, comprising more than 600 families, were forced to relocate to nearby villages but were given land and compensation.

The project was ambitious. Built on the banks of the Salaulim river, it was called the Salaulim Irrigation Project. It proposed to provide water for drinking, irrigation and industrial purposes to most of southern Goa. And it was meant to provide some 400 million litres of water per day to citizens.

"When we came to the new village we had absolutely nothing," recalls Inacio Rodrigues. His was amongst the first few families to shift in 1982. They had to stay in makeshift homes until they could build their own home from scratch. For some that took almost five years.

Gurucharan Kurdikar was 10 years old when his family moved to a new village in 1986.

"I faintly remember my parents hurriedly putting everything in a pick-up truck. I was also packed up in the truck, along with my brother and grandmother. My parents followed us on their moped," the 42 year-old recalls.

His mother, Mamta Kurdikar, remembers the day more clearly. "I think we were the last few families left. It rained heavily the night before, and the water from the fields started entering our house. We had to leave immediately. I couldn't even take my flour mill with me," she says.

But the water from the dam never reached the villages where the former inhabitants of Curdi moved.

"The tap system did not come through to all villages of south Goa as promised," Gajanan Kurdikar says. "So we do not get our drinking water from the dam."

In Vaddem, where Mr Kurdikar now lives, there are two large wells. But in April and May, the wells begin to dry up. They're then forced to depend on government tankers for their drinking water.

When the water recedes in May, Curdi's original inhabitants visit their lost homeland.

The Christian community gather for an annual Chapel feast and the Hindus host a temple feast during that month.

"Today it's very easy for us to pack up our bags and move," says Venisha Fernandes, a Goa-based sociologist.

"But for the people of Curdi, their identity was based on their land. They were closely and directly connected with it. That is perhaps why they remember it keenly, and keep coming back to it."

US President Donald Trump will join the Queen in Portsmouth to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings, on the final day of his UK state visit.

Theresa May will host 15 world leaders to honour the largest combined land, air and naval operation in history.

Figures from every country that fought alongside the UK will be attending.

Those countries have agreed a joint statement to mark the event, pledging to ensure the "unimaginable horror" of the Second World War is not repeated.

TV/MoviesMeet The Actor Behind Hollywood's Monsters by Skiddoamat(op): 5:39am On Jun 02, 2019
On first glance, you probably wouldn't recognise Javier Botet.

Though not a household name, the Spaniard has a portfolio that many in the movie business would kill for.

Over the last few years, the 6ft 6in actor has starred in some of Hollywood's biggest horror and fantasy productions.

From It to Mama to Slender Man - with a Game of Thrones cameo along the way - Javier has forged a reputation as one of the best creature actors in the industry.

Spending his childhood in a small city north of Madrid, Javier developed a love of science fiction and the supernatural.

He grew up drawing monsters and eventually moved to the capital to pursue art. While there, he started getting interested in cinema and producing short films.

At one point, he went along to a special effects workshop. Both he and the tutor suggested his frame would be perfect to try out monster make-up on.

"I didn't realise but I was born to perform," Javier says.

"I have a disease called Marfan syndrome. It makes people skinnier, taller, and very flexible."

"So I was all my life very flexible, all my life doing weird tricks and things to enjoy with my friends [using] very creepy movement."

His condition means his limbs and fingers are longer than average and are able to move in unusual ways.
CultureA Man Buried After 17 Good Years by Skiddoamat(op): 4:26am On Jun 02, 2019
The former leader of Angola's Unita rebel group, Jonas Savimbi, is being reburied 17 years after his death.

Thousands of former Unita fighters wearing white T-shirts emblazoned with images of Savimbi attended the ceremony in his home village of Lopitanga.

His 2002 death brought an end to one of Africa's longest civil wars.

His remains were finally handed over to his family on Friday following confusion earlier in the week.

Unita says the funeral ceremony will be an important step towards national reconciliation in the oil-rich nation.

However, no government representatives were present at the ceremony, reports the AFP news agency.

His coffin was draped in Unita's green and red flag.

Angola was a Cold War battleground, with the US and apartheid South Africa backing Unita, while the governing MPLA received support from the former Soviet Union and Cuba.

At least 500,000 people died in the 27-year conflict
